Set of 5.45x18 mm (PSM) bullet with decapsulated case

If you are well versed in small arms or have at least studied this issue closely, you must understand one important thing. All cartridge calibers existing today did not take their overall dimensions out of thin air - their parameters were carefully thought out for maximum efficiency and applicability in specific conditions.

The kit chambered for 5.45x18 is no exception: it was created specifically to equip weapons designed for convenient concealed carry. We will tell you in more detail about how it appeared and why it is needed.

What is remarkable about the PSM cartridge?

What is remarkable about the PSM cartridge? Its main feature is that it was developed for a specific weapon model - namely a small-sized self-loading pistol. This pistol was necessary to arm the highest ranks of the KGB and other internal structures of the USSR that were of great importance.

One of the main requirements for the design of this weapon was the overall dimensions. The width of the weapon, according to the technical specifications, should not exceed the width of a matchbox - and in order to fulfill this requirement, creating the most compact pistol in the history of the USSR arms industry, a 5.45x18 mm cartridge was required.

Currently, this ammunition is the smallest in the entire line of domestic calibers, and it has practically no competitors among foreign types of ammunition. Buying cartridges for PSM means purchasing technically sophisticated products that fully meet their intended purpose.

The 5.45 mm small-caliber pistol cartridge of central ignition (5.45 × 18 mm MPC) was developed in 1969 at TsNIITOCHMASH by Antonina Dmitrievna Denisova for the PSM small-sized pistol.

In the mid-1960s. The development of a small-sized pistol, convenient for concealed carry, began. At the same time, it was necessary to create the appropriate ammunition.

The world-famous 6.35 and 7.65 mm Browning cartridges did not satisfy the customer due to their weak energy. The idea of creating such a weapon in 5.45 mm caliber arose under the influence of the successful completion of testing of an automatic cartridge of the same caliber (5.45X39).

The new pistol was intended for the senior command staff of the USSR Armed Forces, but soon became interested in the operational services of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the KGB of the USSR.

The 5.45x18 cartridge has a brass case and a bullet with a steel, tombac-coated shell, fixed in the case with three punching points. Sealant varnish - red color is applied to the bullet-case junction and along the perimeter of the primer. Cartridge weight - 10-10.2 g.

The cartridge case is bottle-type with a slight taper. The bullet is jacketed, has a steel and lead core (bullet weight - 2.4 / 2.6 g). The head of the bullet is pointed with a blunt nose (to reduce the possibility of ricochets).

Due to the small diameter and sharpness of the bullet, when it hits a soft (Kevlar) body armor, it does not tear the threads of the armor fabric, but pushes them apart. As a result, it pierces the body armor that holds the bullet of more powerful cartridges (9x17 mm and 9x18 mm). The initial bullet speed is 325 m/s. Muzzle energy – 119, 129 J.

Research conducted by Denisova A.D. showed that with a relatively long and limitedly stabilized bullet, a stopping effect close to 9 mm bullets of a standard pistol can be obtained.

With an appropriate core, the penetration of solid barriers with such a bullet will be higher. On the tested version of the 5.45x18 MPTs cartridge (small-caliber center-fire pistol) with a bottle sleeve (after adoption it received the index 7N7), these characteristics were fully confirmed. A variant of the 7N7 cartridge is the 5.45x18 mm PSO sports cartridge with a 2.7 g bullet with a lead core.

In the mid-1990s, the OTs-23 Dartik pistol was developed in Russia for the 5.45x18 cartridge.

Why do you need a disassembled 5.45x18 mm cartridge?

Why might an ordinary person need a disassembled 5.45x18 mm cartridge? The set of parts for this ammunition offered in our store includes a primed cartridge case with its original bullet. Of course, this product cannot be used to make a real cartridge: despite the fact that the kit contains original components, the legislation of the Russian Federation (in particular, Article 223 of the Criminal Code) excludes this possibility.

However, buying 5.45x18 cartridges in such disassembled form is a completely legal operation. You can use such components to create full-fledged weight and size models of cartridges of this type, the design of which does not require the presence of gunpowder. As a result, you get a fully disassembled training cartridge, the parts of which can be combined using a set of reloading tools.

This ammunition was developed by Antonina Dmitrievna Denisova in 1975 for the PSM small-sized pistol. The idea of creating such a weapon in 5.45 mm caliber arose under the influence of the successful completion of testing of an automatic cartridge of the same caliber. The initiative to create both of these cartridges belongs mainly to the director of TsNIITochMash V.M. Sabelnikov.

Research conducted by Denisova showed that with a relatively long and limitedly stabilized bullet, a stopping effect close to 9 mm bullets of a standard PM pistol can be obtained.

5.45x18

5.45x18 MPC – 5.45 mm pistol cartridge mod. 1970 (index 7 N7) for shooting from the PSM pistol (MPS - small-caliber pistol central ignition) was designed in the late 1960s by engineers of TsNIITM A.I. Bochin, A.D. Denisova, L.S. Nikolaeva and G.P. Shamina.

Research conducted by Denisova showed that with a relatively long and limitedly stabilized bullet, a stopping effect close to the 9-mm bullets of a standard PM pistol can be obtained. With an appropriate core, the penetration of solid barriers by such a bullet turned out to be even higher.

The 5.45 mm MPTs pistol cartridge consists of a cartridge case, a primer, a powder charge and a bullet. The cartridge is fixed when it is loaded into the chamber by focusing the sleeve barrel slope into the chamber slope. The Pst bullet is a shell bullet, 5.62 mm in diameter, ogival with a truncated apex, without a rear cone or belt. The bullet consists of a bimetallic shell and a steel core pressed into it with a lead jacket. The bullet core is composite: steel head and lead main. The head of the bullet is pointed with a blunt nose (to reduce the possibility of ricochets).

Due to the small diameter and sharpness of the bullet, when it hits a soft (Kevlar) body armor, it does not tear the threads of the armor fabric, but pushes them apart. As a result, it pierces the body armor that blocks the bullet of more powerful cartridges (9 x17 and 9 x18). In the commercial version, the MPC cartridge bullet has a lead core rather than a steel one. The bullet is secured in the case with a three-sided punch.

The brass cartridge case has a bottle shape with a non-protruding rim (flange). Red sealant varnish is applied to the bullet-case junction and around the perimeter of the primer. The propellant charge is smokeless varnish powder of the spheroid shape SF MPC, since 1977 - SF040, since 1991 - PSN 850/4.37.

MPC pistol cartridges are sealed in standard wooden cartridge boxes of 4032 pieces each. Each box contains two rolled-up iron or sealed galvanized boxes, in which 2016 rounds of cartridges are placed in cardboard packs, 36 rounds per pack.

A variant of the 7 N7 cartridge is the 5.45 x18 mm PSO sports cartridge with a 2.7 g bullet with a lead core.

MPC cartridges were produced only in Russia: until 1990 by the Yuryuzan Mechanical Plant, and since 1990 by the Tula Cartridge Plant.
