Review of the Kalashnikov assault rifle AK-107, AK-108 and AK-109

Kalashnikov assault rifles series 107 and 108, 109 were created in 2011. The basis is the modernized Kalashnikov 74 and version 101 as an additional base. Users note that the resulting carbines are distinguished by the balance of automation and accuracy of fire when the shooter is in an unstable position.

The Alexandrov-Kalashnikov assault rifles AK-107 (5.45x39 mm), AK-108 (5.56x45 mm NATO) were developed at the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant based on the AK74M and AK101 assault rifles, respectively. They are distinguished by the presence of balanced automation, also used in the AL-7 and AEK-971 models. Balanced automation significantly improves the accuracy of firing bursts from unstable positions, in comparison with the AK74M - by 15-20%.

Modifications

The AK 107 assault rifle, the characteristics of which are discussed above, as well as its analogues numbered 108 and 109, differ from each other only in the type of cartridge used. Special automation works using the stroke of a gas engine with increased movement of the element and balancer, which is equipped with an individual gas piston moving in the opposite direction from the main element. The balancer is synchronized with the shutter frame through a gear, which is in vertical aggregation with it. The rebound of the moving parts of the gun is ensured by a special part. The barrel canal is closed according to the principle of identical constipation to the AK-74 modification.

The AK-107 and AK-108 assault rifles were developed at the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant (IZHMASH) based on earlier models created to participate in the Abakan competition program. The main creators of the new machine guns are Yu. K. Alexandrov and V. N. Paranin, and the design of these machines was based on the experimental Izhevsk machine guns AL-4 (developed in the late 1960s) and AL-7 (later developed). Both of these machines were distinguished by the so-called “balanced” automation, similar in concept to that used in the AEK-971 machine gun of the Kovrov Mechanical Plant. Such automation can significantly improve the characteristics of weapons when firing bursts of any length, compared to traditional Kalashnikov assault rifles, on the basis of which both the AL-4 and AL-7, and the AK-107/108 were developed.

In fact, the main difference between the AK-107 5.45mm caliber and AK-108 5.56mm NATO assault rifles from the Kalashnikov AK-74M and AK-101 assault rifles, respectively, is the modified design of the automation, which received a second gas piston with a counterweight mounted on its rod, and a synchronizing a device located between the bolt frame and the balancer. There are a number of other differences, in particular, a modified design for fastening the receiver cover, but they are less significant. The main idea of balanced automation is that the recoil of a weapon when firing is made up of a number of impulses. Of these, the first in time is the impulse from the shot itself, received by the weapon while the bolt is still locked. This is followed by an additional impulse when the bolt group hits the moment it comes to the rear position, and finally - an oppositely directed impulse when the bolt group comes to the extreme forward position after completing the reloading cycle.

And if the recoil from the shot itself can be somewhat reduced with the help of an effective muzzle brake, then quite significant impulses from the collision of the bolt group with the receiver in the rear and front positions are more difficult to extinguish, and they introduce quite strong disturbances into the position of the weapon when firing, worsening the accuracy of fire. To eliminate these impulses, an additional “balancer” was introduced into the design of the weapon, moving in the direction opposite to the movement of the bolt group. In this case, the mass of the balancer is equal to the mass of the bolt group, and the speed of movement due to the presence in the design of a synchronizer in the form of an ordinary gear wheel (gear) is equal in magnitude and opposite in value, so that the pulses of the bolt group and the balancer are equal in magnitude and opposite in sign, then there is a total impulse equal to zero. In the extreme positions of the moving group, its elements collide not with the stationary elements of the weapon, but with each other, mutually canceling the impulses that in conventional weapons are transmitted to its body and to the shooter in the form of additional recoil components.

The result of using this design is that when firing in bursts, the weapon as a whole and the shooter are actually affected only by the recoil impulse caused by the shot itself (the total impulse of the bullet and powder gases), moreover, it is effectively reduced by the muzzle brake, which significantly improves the accuracy of fire in automatic mode. According to various sources, the effect of using such a scheme makes it possible to improve accuracy during burst fire by 1.5 - 2 times compared to AK-74M assault rifles. At the same time, the design of the weapon becomes only slightly more complicated, especially in comparison with weapons in which a gun-mounted automatic circuit is adopted to improve the accuracy of fire (for example, the Nikonov AN-94 assault rifle). The characteristic appearance of a weapon with balanced automatics, which has a gas piston tube greatly elongated forward, is precisely determined by the need to hide in it a balancer moving back and forth opposite the bolt group.

The AK-107 and AK-108 assault rifles differ from each other only in the cartridges used. The automation is built according to a gas exhaust system with a long stroke of the gas piston and an additional balancer, which has its own second gas piston moving in the opposite direction to the main direction. Synchronization of the bolt frame and balancer is carried out using a gear located vertically between them. In addition, an original part has been introduced into the design to prevent the moving parts from rebounding when they reach the extreme position corresponding to the forward position of the bolt frame (at the end of the reloading cycle). The barrel is locked using a rotating bolt, similar in design to the bolt of the Kalashnikov AK-74 assault rifle.

The design provides two return springs - one is located in the usual place between the rear wall of the receiver and the bolt frame, and the second is between the bolt frame and the balancer, and is compressed between them when the bolt is opened. The trigger mechanism is generally similar to that on the Kalashnikov AK-74 assault rifles, but an additional firing mode has been introduced with a burst cut-off of 3 shots. The safety-translator of fire modes is also traditionally “Kalashnikovsky”, but has not 3, but 4 positions: safety - automatic fire ("A") - burst of 3 rounds ("3") - single shots ("1"). Black plastic fittings, a folding stock and open sights are borrowed from the AK-74M assault rifle.

In 2011, the IZHMASH concern demonstrated an improved AK-107 assault rifle, presumably as a potential replacement for the AK-74M assault rifles. The new version of the AK-107 assault rifle features a new receiver cover with an integral Picatinny rail for quick and convenient installation of optical sights. An adjustable diopter sight is installed in the rear of the receiver, replacing the traditional open rear sight with a U-shaped slot for Kalashnikov assault rifles. Currently (2016) work on the 107 series assault rifles is not being carried out, but on their basis the Saiga-107 civilian sports carbine has been created.

Refusal to adopt

On June 22, 2014, automatic weapons from two manufacturers were tested for the “Ratnik” equipment: AK-12 from the Kalashnikov concern and A-545 from the Degtyarev Kovrov plant, said Oleg Bochkarev, deputy chairman of the Military-Industrial Commission under the Government of the Russian Federation:

“Usually we come up with one sample. During the preliminary tests, we were convinced that both the machines turned out well. Now is an important moment for manufacturers and for the military - to choose the single type of weapon that will be in Russia,” explained a representative of the Military-Industrial Commission to the Russian News Service.

Thus, among the assault rifles with balanced automatics, it was not the modernized AK-107 that passed the state tests of the Russian Federation, but the A-545 assault rifle, the successor to the AEK-971 assault rifle from the Degtyarev Kovrov plant.

According to chief designer Vladimir Zlobin, the AK-12 managed to achieve the same accuracy of fire as the AK-107, while balanced automatics were abandoned due to decreased reliability and high cost of production. This became the determining factor in the final competition, the results of which became known in February 2015 - the new AK-12 became the main machine gun for military equipment of “Ratnik” military personnel.

I still don’t understand why they chose the AK-12 and not the AK-107.

A few reasons.
The Ak-12 is a more widespread assault rifle, easier to manufacture, cheaper, half a kg lighter, more reliable (due to its simpler design), and of course there is a difference in the accuracy of fire, but not so critical. In general, the AK-12 is a relatively simple mass-produced machine gun to arm everyone, while the AK-107 is still a more highly specialized weapon, difficult to operate, expensive, etc. And by the way, instead of the 107th, along with the AK-12, they adopted the A-545 (a development of the AEK-971), also an assault rifle with balanced automatics, which is not inferior to the 107th in terms of accuracy, is a little lighter and has some other advantages. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote 0 Alfred 02/21/2017 17:40 Volkov Most likely you are right, but the 107 is much more accurate and there is almost no recoil. I can’t say anything about its reliability and have never seen it disassembled for cleaning, but I liked it better than the AK -12.

In principle, I am interested in how widespread it is in the USA and how “in demand” it is.

If you mean the principle of balanced recoil, then in the USA they simply don’t exist yet. Izhmash is under sanctions and Saiga 107 is not available. My opinion is that with a good DTK (only really good one) and a light frame with a titanium piston, you can achieve that the AK7.62 will have a recoil of 223 , but 5.45 is like a small thing and there is no need to fence this complex and heavy garden.

His training with special forces is #1 in popularity on his channel. Yes, he himself will pay to get into the bins of Russian weapons. By the way, it is very popular in the USA. Look at the sanctions on Izhmash and how sad they are for Saiga

0 November 02/21/2017 17:56 Any American can go to the store and buy an AK. And what about any Russian...???!!! Thanks to our government and gay laws. Which one of you knows how to shoot? What if there is a war? But the Americans can do everything and have a Kalash gun in every house. But here we are not people, but slaves. But slaves are not allowed weapons. What can I say in Russia, you can get 3 years in prison for a fucking knife. Although you can safely walk down the street with an ax wrapped in newspaper. Damn people, think about it, how fucking crazy are they to pass such laws? It's time to allow guns. Naturally, any prisoners and drug addicts should not sell it. Then there will actually be fewer attacks. Go over there in Texas and rob a store. Yes, the seller himself will fuck you there, and it’s not him, but any buyer will give you a gun and shoot you in the head.

About authorship

Disassembling and assembling a Kalashnikov assault rifle is very simple; partial implementation does not require any tools. There are still no analogues in the weapons world, but there are vague hints of borrowing the design and even the whole idea in the press. The main reason for the opinion that the history of the creation of an outstanding model of weapons is allegedly dishonest in patent terms is, as a rule, a certain external similarity of the Soviet machine gun (and especially its horn magazine) with the same “Schmeisser” and the poor awareness of fans of “fried” facts in the field of the design of various weapon systems. It would be useful for such experts to first try to disassemble a German assault rifle, clean and lubricate it, and after that talk about whether M. T. Kalashnikov stole his brainchild or created it himself.

Design

  • Self-loading carbine with folding stock. The trigger mechanism is driven by powder gases discharged from the barrel bore through a gas outlet pipe.
  • The design is completely identical to the AK-104 combat assault rifle, the only thing that makes the Saiga MK version 03 different from it is the absence of an automatic fire sear. Provision is made for blocking the trigger when the stock is folded.
  • The pistol grip, butt, fore-end and gas tube cover in the basic version are made of black impact-resistant plastic.
  • Sights are a traditional AK rear sight-ruler with a slider and a high closed front sight, both made of metal.

Balanced automatic

The AK 107 assault rifle, thanks to the system in question, is capable of absorbing some of the impulses during the recoil of the gun. This factor includes a complex of several influences. Among them:

  • An impulse after a shot is fired, issued while the shutter is closed.
  • Then the bolt assembly is pulled back and rests against the rear of the barrel box, which provokes another impulse.
  • The final action is carried out due to the application of an oppositely directed pulse when the shutter is moved to the extreme right position during the final recharge cycle.

The recoil of shots from AK 107/108/109 assault rifles is reduced due to the use of an effective muzzle compensator with a brake. The remaining pulse feeds have a more complex damping configuration. For this purpose, an automatic balancer with an additional analogue is used, which is moved simultaneously with the bolt mechanism in the opposite direction. The weight of the balancing device and the bolt group is the same, as is the speed, which is provided by the synchronizer, which is responsible for the opposite direction of the nodes in relation to each other.

Peculiarities

Supposedly, the only possible semi-automatic mode for this civilian carbine prevents the weapon from jumping out of the hands of an inexperienced shooter. The MK-107 copy is equipped with a telescopic butt, an ergonomic pistol-type grip, and a set of Picatinny rails, which make it possible to use various additional attachments. These include:

  • optical sights;
  • collimators;
  • handles of a different type;
  • night-vision devices.

All weapon equipment is oriented to NATO standards. Even the caliber of the cartridge corresponds to the common indicator used in the northern alliance. It is obvious that the carbine will be produced primarily for export; accordingly, it is guaranteed success not only in the domestic space. This is especially true for countries where Kalashnikov weapons have enjoyed unquestioned authority for many years.
