What difficulties did you encounter in your work?
To make the Fort-17 pistol, a special graphite electrode was required. It was needed to burn out molds with the help of which composite frames would be made by casting. The designers did not have this electrode. It was also not possible to find an alternative option, since pistol plastic frames are made exclusively using molds. Since Ukrainian gunsmiths did not have this electrode, they first had to work hard on its production, using complex tools and CNC machines.
Operating countries[edit]
- Ukraine: in service with Group “A” of the Special Operations Center of the Security Service of Ukraine;
- is a reward weapon;
- On November 12, 2010, the state savings bank PJSC Oschadbank purchased 121 Fort-17 pistols for security and collection units;
- On July 8, 2011, 100 Fort-17-05 pistols were purchased for the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine;
- On April 12, 2012, 118 Fort-17 pistols were purchased for departmental security employees of PJSC Ukrhydroenergo;
- On October 3, 2014, the head of the central missile and artillery department of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel Vitaly Otamanyuk, announced that the Fort-17 pistol is expected to be adopted by the Ukrainian army.
Debut
In 2000, design work on the Fort-17 pistol was completed. Ukrainian gunsmiths managed to make a mold for the further production of frames from reinforced plastic in the shortest possible time. By May 2004, the first sample of “Fort-17” was already ready. The place where the new Ukrainian pistol was shown was the exhibition “Arms and Security 2004”, which took place at the end of October. The use of polymer materials had a positive effect on the weight of weapons, manufacturability and production costs.
Interesting facts[edit]
Fort-17R with the inscription “So!” in honor of the Orange Revolution.
- The Fort-17 pistol with number 0001 was presented by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine as a reward weapon to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Yu. V. Lutsenko (on March 20, 2007, this pistol was seized during a search in his apartment), Fort-17 pistols with numbers from 0002 to 0006 were awarded as award weapons to other participants in the Orange Revolution.
- After the “Orange Revolution”, on the initiative of the Governor of the Vinnytsia region, Alexander Dombrovsky, NPO “Fort” produced a batch of 1000 gold-plated gift traumatic pistols based on the Fort-17R design with the inscription “So!” (Russian Yes!) and “Viryu!” I know! We can!” (Russian: I believe! I know! We can!) as souvenirs for the ideological inspirers and heroes of the revolution on the Maidan. Pistols costing about 5,000 hryvnia were assembled by hand by the best specialists, which led to a four to fivefold increase in cost compared to standard production samples.
Description of the shooting model
Unlike its counterpart, Fort-17 is equipped with a plastic frame. Composite polyamide is used for its manufacture. Its reinforcement is carried out using fiberglass. Judging by numerous reviews, “Fort-17” is very pleasant to the touch and easy to use. The shooter can adjust the pistol to the dimensions of his palm, thus increasing the quality of aiming and shooting accuracy. This became possible thanks to the presence of a removable butt plate in the handle. Ukrainian gunsmiths have created three sizes of butt plates. The front part of the pistol frame is equipped with special guides, through which the weapon can be equipped with a tactical flashlight or laser designator.
About the device
Ukrainian developers also managed to improve the design characteristics of the Fort-17 pistol. The frame of the model is equipped with a chrome-plated steel frame. The bolt delay lever has undergone some changes: its rear part is reinforced with a spring-loaded locking pin.
The spring, which in the Forte-12 was located between the axis of the bolt stop and its lever, was removed by the gunsmiths from the new model of the pistol. All parts in the trigger mechanism are made by forging. This prevents the appearance of various voids and microcracks in them.

The operation of the pistol is based on the principle of a free shutter with a reliable locking system and the ability to lock the trigger both on the action and on the back action, as in the Fort-12 pistol. Suspended action trigger mechanism (SA/DA), trigger type.
Lightweight, monoblock, non-detachable frame, made of high-acid polymer, allows you to save the fire of the gun at low weight. At the lower front part of the frame there is a Picatin rail, on which you can install a laser target gun and a tactical light carrier (LT-6-A). For the variable handle pads, you can choose the shape and size of the handle to match the anatomical features of the shooter’s hand.
The magazine is container type, noble, with a capacity of 15 (16 for 9×17 mm Kurz) magazines. The magazines are interchangeable with the Fort-12 pistol. The procedure for disassembling the pistol is similar to Fort-12.
The Fort-17 pistol also has an additional modification for use with the left hand.

About modifications
On the basis of “Forta-17”, Ukrainian weapons designers created the following shooting models:
- Award pistol. It differs from the standard “Forta-17” by the presence of engraving and gilding.
- The 17th model, adapted for left-handed use.
- Pistol for sport shooting. By installing a muzzle brake-compensator on the weapon, the designers lengthened the barrel to 107.5 mm. In addition, an adjustable sight was developed for the model. The pistol was called “Cobra” and was first presented in the fall of 2005 at the International Conference on Practical Shooting. Like the Makarov pistol, the modified Fort-17 fires 9 x 18 mm cartridges.
- "Cordon". It is a sports training pistol. Shooting is carried out with 22 LR cartridges. The magazine holds 10 rounds of ammunition.
- "Fort-17 Kurz". Shoots ACP 380 cartridges.
- "Fort-17T". It is a traumatic pistol using R.A. cartridges. 9 mm. The magazine holds 13 rounds of ammunition. The barrel of the pistol is equipped with special protrusions that completely prevent the firing of live ammunition. Special elastic bullets have been developed for “trauma”. In 2007, in Russia this model was considered a civilian weapon. Deliveries of “traumas” to the Russian Federation were carried out. In 2011, supplies of pistols to Russia were stopped due to changed legislation.
- "Fort-17R". It is a traumatic pistol using R.A. cartridges. 9 mm. The store, as in the previous version, is designed for 13 rounds of ammunition. The rifle model is used by certain categories of employees of the SMVChM of Ukraine (special motorized military police units).
About Russian analogues
From parts supplied to Russia, local gunsmiths assembled the following shooting variations of the Fort-17 pistol:
- "Jorge." The pistol was manufactured at the Klimovsky Specialized Cartridge Plant in 2006.
- "Jorge-1". The gun represents “trauma.” Shooting is carried out with R.A. cartridges. 9 mm. The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has certified the model as a civilian weapon for self-defense. The barrel channel is equipped with special protrusions-limiters. For small arms products manufactured before 2007, cartridges are provided whose kinetic energy does not exceed 50 J. Pistols produced after 2007 can be equipped with ammunition with a power of up to 80 J.
- "Jorge-1C". The product is a traumatic pistol. The weapon uses R.A. cartridges. 9 mm. The barrel channel is not equipped with partitions. Russian designers equipped the pistol magazine with a special limiter, as a result of which the Jorge-1C is loaded with only 10 rounds. The pistol grip is equipped with a hidden swivel, to which the shooter can attach a safety strap.
- "Thunderstorm-04". The traumatic pistol is produced at the Russian enterprise Tekhnoarms.
