MP-94 carbines (guns) are a very controversial hunting weapon, which the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant began producing in the mid-1990s. These weapons can be called both rifles and shotguns. A special feature is that the MP-94 is a combined weapon designed to fire both shot cartridges and ammunition for rifled weapons.
Each MP-94 shotgun has two barrels, one of which is smooth and the other is rifled. Moreover, these trunks can be of various modifications.
Combined shotguns IZH-94, IZH-94 “Taiga”, IZH-94R
Despite the fact that the guns in the IZH-94 line are represented by three models, two of them can be combined into one, since they have very minor differences.
These combination guns are weapons with a hidden trigger and a vertical barrel arrangement, where the upper barrel is smooth, chambered for 12/70 or 12/76 cartridges, and the lower is rifled, and can be designed for a wide variety of ammunition. 9.3x74, 7x65, 7.62x54, 7.62x51, 7.62x39, 5.6x50 - this is not a list of all cartridges that can be used in a lower rifled barrel. At the same time, replacing barrels does not require much effort or any special skills from the weapon owner and can be done in just a few minutes. Thus, we can say with confidence that the IZH-94 is a weapon that fully realizes its versatility, although the price of such versatility seems somewhat high, but nevertheless the fact remains a fact. In addition to the fact that the weapon can be equipped with a smooth and rifled barrel together, its design does not exclude the use of two smooth barrels or two rifled ones, and in the latter case they can be designed for different ammunition, but there is no real use of such sets of barrels, really, why? purchase a combined weapon and use it either as a rifled weapon or as a smooth-bore weapon, when you can purchase full-fledged models, but this is rather a question of the quality of the IZH-94. a model of the IZH-94 weapon was created based on the IZH-27 gun, developed by A. Matveev and V. Votyakov, but with its own changes. The most interesting part of the weapon is the solution to the problem of removing spent cartridges from the chamber of a rifled barrel, which do not have a rim. On the extractor, which removes both cartridges when opening the weapon, there is a rod on the side of the rifled barrel that enters the groove and guides the cartridge along with it. The gun barrels are secured to each other by soldering or couplings that allow the barrels to be adjusted relative to each other; this innovation is patented and, according to the gunsmiths themselves, ensures ideal behavior of the barrels during a shot. The barrels themselves are blued to increase their resistance to the environment; the smooth barrel is chrome-plated from the inside. The receiver differs from the progenitor of the IZH-27 in that it is more strongly hardened, which is explained by the fact that the rifled barrel can be designed for ammunition of sufficiently high power. In addition, in the “differences from IZH-27” column, one can also include the fact that the lower firing pin is reduced in size. In the breech coupling of the barrels there is an under-barrel hook, which locks the barrels when engaged with the locking bar. In order to increase the reliability of the locking unit, as well as extend its service life, a hardened steel liner is installed in the receiver, on which the under-barrel hook rests, this is necessary in order to reduce the impact on the locking unit when firing, as well as to prevent unlocking bore channels when firing. The trigger mechanism does not differ in any innovations: the triggers are hidden, and after hitting the firing pin, they are put on safety cock. The cocking of the hammers occurs when the barrels of the weapon are unlocked. In addition, to prevent the possibility of an accidental shot, for example during a fall, when the trigger may involuntarily break, there are interceptors that will intercept the trigger if the trigger is not pressed. The weapon's safety is automatically activated when the hammers are cocked when the gun is broken, and the weapon's sears are rigidly locked. All this together allows us to say that this model of a combination gun is quite well protected from involuntary and accidental shots, which is important for civilian weapons. The IZH-94 sights are open and can be adjusted with subsequent centering, but the possibility of installing a wide variety of optical sights cannot be ruled out. Despite the fact that the rear sight of the gun is pierced, height adjustment can be done by screwing in and out the front sight, but for some reason many people prefer to work with a file. Horizontal adjustment is made by moving the rear sight to the sides. The weight of the weapon without an optical sight is 3.5 kilograms. We should also talk about connecting trunks using couplings. In 1996, the designer Popovichev developed an original design of barrel blocks, in which the barrels are connected to each other using couplings and at the same time it is possible to adjust the barrels relative to each other. This design makes the weapon more convenient for the manufacturer, since the tolerances during production become much larger than in the case of a design where the barrels are connected by soldering, however, for the consumer, an apparent benefit in the form of the ability to regulate everything and everyone can result in the burning of a huge number of nerve cells, before than the weapon will be brought to normal levels of shooting accuracy. Horizontal adjustment is carried out at the factory and after that the barrels are fixed, but the ability to adjust the average point of impact vertically was left to the consumer. Making a small digression, it should be said that barrels are often adjusted horizontally at the factory very poorly, which buyers have repeatedly complained about, but this cannot be taken as a rule, since there are also often guns that are adjusted perfectly, on which it depends , from the employee’s mood or from some other reasons, it was never possible to establish for the entire production period of IZH-94. Vertical adjustment is carried out using replaceable cylinders installed between the barrels, a set of which is included in the weapon kit. However, the set turned out to be insufficient to satisfy all customer requirements, so the cylinders are often supplemented with homemade liners, but the design is quite reliable and the barrels are fixed quite rigidly. In order to prevent the second from being deformed during intensive shooting from one barrel, the front coupling is firmly seated only on the upper smooth barrel, while the rifled barrel has a slight gap with the coupling. This solution to the first problem entailed a new one - vibration of the rifled barrel when fired, which nullifies all the efforts of the designers to make an accurate weapon. The owners of the IZH-94 combination gun cope with this problem on their own; someone, realizing the absurdity of the situation of heating one of the barrels to a temperature at which deformation can occur due to the internal resistance of the metal, provided that reloading occurs when the gun is broken, simply grabs the lower a rifled barrel is welded to the front coupling located at the muzzle, someone makes and installs an intermediate coupling in the center of the barrels, by the way, the latter option is the most effective. In the IZH-94 model with welded barrels, those who like to shoot at speed from one barrel note the bending of the barrels up or down relative to each other, although imagining a situation when it would be necessary to fire continuously from the IZH-94, and from one barrel is quite difficult, is usually for those who rate of fire is more important than accuracy; they prefer completely different weapons. A similar connection system, when the coupling at the muzzle is not rigidly connected to both barrels, was used previously and not only in domestic weapons. Tikka and Savage companies “like” to put such a design on their products, but the generally accepted connection between the barrels is still a solder, and this tradition is followed by all leading European companies.
Domestic combination shotguns
They have long gained well-deserved popularity in all parts of our vast Motherland. Basically, this universal weapon is produced at the Izhevsk plant:
- IZH-94;
- IZH-94 “Taiga”;
- IZH-94 “North”;
- IZH-94MR;
- MP-251;
- MC105.
However, the Tula Armory also produces its own range of combined weapons:
- TOZ-28;
- TOZ-91;
- TOZ-205;
- TOZ-112.
Let's look at some of these models in more detail.
IZH-94 "North"
A wonderful weapon for a hunter, essentially a modification of the IZH-27. According to reviews from experienced hunters, the “North” is an ideal weapon for forest running hunting of small animals and other upland game.
"North" is mainly produced in the 20/70 + 5.6X39 format.
Specifications:
- Lower trunk – 20/70 and 20/76; muzzle constriction 0.5 or replaceable;
- Upper barrel - .22LR, .22WMR, 5.6X39;
- The length of both trunks is 60 cm;
- Weight – 3.0-3.4 kg.
Advantages:
Reliability . The shutter that Sever inherited from the IZH-94 is much more reliable than necessary.- Short gun and barrels. During walking hunting, the trunk does not cling to branches or protrude above your head. The center of gravity of this gun is shifted to the butt, i.e. back. This makes “North” very posadistic.
- Good accuracy of the IZH-94, especially on a rifled barrel (bullet dispersion at 25m is no more than 35 mm).
- The quiet sound of a gunshot.
- Easy to replace the IZH-94 barrel; even a beginner without special skills can handle it. In general, it is even possible to replace the barrels with two smooth or two rifled ones, but such “extravagant” solutions are rare. And really, why buy a combination gun and turn it into something else?
- “Omnivorous” weapon: a rifled barrel can easily “digest” 9.3x74, 7x65, 7.62x54, 7.62x51, 7.62x39, 5.6x50 and a bunch of other cartridges of various calibers and types, and a smooth barrel allows you to experiment with powder loads and ammunition equipment.
Flaws:
Like all domestic guns, the Sever requires serious “finishing with a file.” The gun is rough, but if you want and have free time, you can customize it “to suit you.”- Very tight descent. It is treated, again, by polishing and sharpening the platoons of the whisper, which will require precision and accuracy from the hunter.
- The barrels are not shot at all. Thanks to this, “North” costs much less than it could, but such entertainment (if desired) falls on the shoulders of the hunter. Many people solve this problem on old IZH-94s by cutting off part of the smooth barrel, making a bevel to the right until the aiming points more or less converge. On new modifications of the IZH-94, a coupling was added (for horizontal aiming) and replaceable cylinders for vertical aiming (inserted between the barrels), with which you can adjust this. At the same time, only horizontal aiming is regulated at the factory, but vertical aiming, as mentioned above, is left to the consumer for the sake of economy.
- Disgusting open sight. The shield is too big, because of which you can’t see anything, and besides, it’s located too close, everything blurs, your eyes quickly get tired and watery. It can be treated by throwing out the rear sight and replacing it with a ring sight. It’s much more convenient to shoot this way, and, if desired, the Sever ring sight can be used for shooting with a shot charge.
IZH-94MR
A sample of the combined IZH-94MR is a new interpretation of the concept of a light and inexpensive weapon, a more modern variation of the IZH-56 “Belka” released half a century ago. The model is distinguished by a compact bolt box and the use of a ribless barrel block system. The combination of these parameters makes it possible to achieve a light weight weapon, convenient even for long hikes. Thanks to the combination of calibers and the presence of 410 caliber bullet cartridges, the IZH-94MR allows you to hunt a fairly wide and varied range of game: from birds and small fur-bearing animals to medium-sized ungulates.
This model is equipped with a striker mechanism with automatic cocking, one trigger and hammer. The IZH-94MR trigger mechanism is equipped with a barrel selection selector. A push-button non-automatic trigger safety is located in the rear area of the safety guard. The open sight is equipped with a rear sight that can be adjusted horizontally, as well as a vertically adjustable front sight. It is also possible to install an optical sight on the IZH-94MR.
IZH-94 "Express"
The hunting double-barreled shotgun IZH-94 “Express” with a vertical barrel arrangement was developed on the basis of the IZH-27M model. This model is distinguished by a reinforced locking unit, which is specially designed for Magnums. These design features of the Express make it possible to fire powerful bullet ammunition. The stable accuracy of the Express model, even during intense shooting, is ensured by the strapless connection of the barrel block with a free-fitting lower one. This is also facilitated by the mechanism that regulates the convergence of the average point of impact of the barrels.
IZH-94 Express shotguns are safe to use thanks to the following design elements:
- An automatic safety that locks the sear only when the hammers are cocked. Thanks to this, the possibility of firing from uncovered barrels is eliminated.
- Trigger interceptors act as an additional safety device. They make it possible to eliminate the possibility of a shot in the event of a careless release of the triggers without pressing the triggers.
The forend and butt of the IZH-94 “Express” model are made of high-quality walnut or beech wood.
TOZ-112
Currently, the Tula Arms Plant produces the latest unique model of the TOZ-112 double-barreled combined hunting rifle. This sample weighs 3 kg and has a barrel length of 635 mm. The upper rifled barrel TOZ-112 is self-loading, equipped with a replaceable magazine chambered for 5.6 mm rimfire cartridges. The lower smooth barrel is suitable for 20 gauge cartridges with a case length of 70 mm.
TOZ-112 is an incredibly convenient and, most importantly, necessary combination of barrels for hunters. And given the presence of a self-loading mechanism for reloading a rifled barrel, we can safely say that no foreign-made model has such parameters.
Both barrels of the TOZ-112 model are combined into a single block. This is very convenient for transporting weapons, since with the forend removed, the receiver can be separated from this block and transported separately.
Thanks to the vertical arrangement of the barrels, the accuracy of the bullet shot increases. This is achieved by placing the channels of both barrels along the axis of symmetry of the gun. The chrome-plated lower smooth barrel of the TOZ-112 is especially convenient for long-term or commercial hunting, since this coating protects the weapon from corrosion even when you are not able to provide the gun with proper care.
Izh-94, combined sideflint - for those with straight arms
A combined weapon - having a smooth and rifled barrel - provides the hunter with more opportunities to catch prey. Having it in service, you can hunt equally effectively, shooting with a shotgun, or using a rifle bullet to take out game that is hard to wound (like capercaillie) and does not allow you to get within range of a confident shot from a smoothbore gun. One of the representatives of such “combinations” is the IZH-94 sideflint, the model range of which is united under the Baikal brand.
Types of combined hunting weapons
- " Doubles ". As the name implies, one barrel of the gun is rifled, the second is smooth-bore. Such guns are also called choke guns.
- Three-barreled shotguns (“tees”). By analogy with “doubles”, three-barreled shotguns are produced in a combination of 2 rifled barrels + 1 smoothbore or 2 smoothbore + 1 rifled.
- Four-barreled shotgun . A rather exotic category of guns, in which there are 2 barrels of different types (rifled and smoothbore). Basically, they are not used by Russian hunters.
The most common combination guns in Russian gun stores are “doubles”.
Description of the Izh-94 carbine
Hunting weapon with vertically positioned barrels (side-flint).
- One of them is smooth, the other is rifled. Its design is based on the smooth-bore “vertical” IZH-27M - a very common and popular weapon among hunters.
- The receiver was taken from its predecessor (its front wall, the forehead, was reinforced) with a trigger mechanism and a butt.
- The distance between the firing pins is preserved, only the lower one, used to pierce the primer of a rifle cartridge, is made thinner, so it is possible to change the barrel block and return to a conventional smoothbore sideflint.
- The barrels are connected by a coupling (this is a technology patented by Izhevsk gunsmiths), it is possible to adjust the firing point of the barrels, for which the coupling, installed in the middle, behind the forend, is equipped with an eccentric rotating mechanism.
- The set of sights has been changed. Instead of a ventilated bar with a front sight, there is a horizontally adjustable rear sight and a front sight, the height of which can also be changed. There is also a dovetail rail mounted on the breech of the upper barrel.
An overview of the IZH-94 North is shown in the video below:
Advantages and disadvantages
The combination of a smooth and rifled barrel allows you to expand the shooter’s capabilities and increase the hunting yield.
- The trigger mechanism is equipped with spiral mainsprings, which are more reliable than the figured plate springs used in TOZ. There are trigger interceptors that do not allow you to fire a shot if the barrel block is not completely closed, falls, or hits.
- The smooth bore chamber has a wide countersink, allowing the use of wide or narrow flange cartridges. It is long, the gun can be loaded with either star-rolled cartridges (paper or plastic cartridges) or rolled cartridges (brass cartridges).
- The ejector, activated when the barrel is broken, easily pulls out any swollen cartridge case.
- It is possible to replace the block of barrels by installing both smooth ones or a rifled one of a different caliber.
- The weapon has a two-stage locking scheme - with a spring-loaded latch connecting the barrel block, and with a forend that locks the fracture hinge. For smooth-bore weapons this is quite enough. However, there are doubts that it is reliable enough when used with Magnum caliber rifle cartridges. An additional latch, like the TOZ BM, would definitely not hurt.
- The cartridge ejector is designed to a greater extent for removing cartridges with a flanged bottom edge; when using wafer-free cartridges, there may be some inconveniences. Especially in winter or wet weather.
- The stock is designed for shooting from smooth barrels. Firstly, in terms of strength. Beech or ash is used to make it, and in some cases even birch is possible. The ideal would be to use walnut. Secondly, its ridge is too low for building an aiming line through a pair of rear sights and front sights, and even more so for using an optical sight on a high bracket.
- The dovetail bracket used does not hold the optics very securely. In addition, it is not universal, like a Weaver or Picatinny rail, which has the same distance between the grooves along the entire length and is suitable for mounting any optics.
Combination shotguns of the MP (IZH)-94 series - an unusual combination in one design
General characteristics of combination shotguns
The appearance of the MP-94 combination shotguns is associated with an interesting branch of the development of weapons manufacturing. In order to adapt the hunting rifle for universal use on any hunt, it was necessary to create a special double-barreled shotgun. One of its barrels is smooth, and the other is rifled. Combination shotguns come in more than just double-barrels. In Europe, three-barrel and even four-barrel guns of this type are sometimes found.
It would seem, why have two guns, if a combined weapon makes it possible to hunt a wide variety of game, especially since a rifled barrel is capable of shooting at long distances?
As practice has shown, most often combined guns are purchased by amateur hunters who have just received a license to purchase rifled weapons. It is they who believe that purchasing a combined product will provide them with a universal weapon. However, the main problem with combination shotguns is their single-shot nature. It is for this reason that hunting a large animal with a combination gun is very dangerous, since it is very difficult to hit it outright with one shot.
What kind of animal is this - a combined hunting weapon?
In short, a combination gun differs from a regular gun only in the combination of a rifled and smoothbore barrel in one gun! It happens that there are several rifled and/or smooth barrels, which allows the use of different types of ammunition, and of different calibers.
As mentioned above, such guns are a godsend for a hunter. With their help, you can catch various game in one approach and not experience the agony of choice in the spirit of “oh, if only I had taken a rifled gun with me/other cartridges, etc.” So, in one trip you can catch not only some small animal, but also, for example, an elk. However, if you hunt a strictly specific type of game, and you already have a smoothbore weapon that suits you, then there is little point in purchasing combination guns.
However, many hunters consider combined models to be the most rational in the middle zone and for hunting a variety of animals. And if you also have an insert for rimfire cartridges, then the range of use of combination shotguns will expand even more. With the help of such inserts, you can successfully shoot small game, including fur-bearing animals and birds, and damage to the prey will be minimal. Often such inserts are already included with the weapon, in other cases they can be purchased additionally.
Features of combination shotguns
The main feature of combination shotguns is the presence of different types of barrels. Each of them can have completely different calibers and ballistic features. For example, MP-94 shotguns have many modifications that differ from each other in the combination of different calibers.
Another feature of combination shotguns is the presence of sights for each barrel. As a rule, sighting strips and front sights are used for smooth barrels, and ring and optical sights or rear sights are used for rifled barrels. That is why it is unlikely that you will be able to successfully shoot from two barrels at once, since the scope will be aimed only at a specific barrel. Although there are models that have sights that combine the aiming point for two types of barrels.
In addition to the undoubted disadvantage that combination shotguns do not have magazines, they are also very heavy compared to conventional double-barreled shotguns. It is better not to take them with you on walking hunts.
Based on the above, we can conclude that a combination gun is an ideal choice for a hunter who has permission to purchase a rifle, but does not want to have more than one gun.
Three-barrel guns (tees)
Currently, tees have become widespread only in German-speaking countries, where they are quite popular. The main advantage of any tee is its versatility, however, this quality is also fraught with certain disadvantages.
The heyday of traditional tees was at the beginning of the 20th century. These models are also called shot tees. They were equipped with two side smooth barrels, as well as one rifled one, located under the first two or between them.
The popularity of trebles is due to the fact that they are suitable for year-round hunting, and with their help you can catch game of almost any size. Tees equipped with mechanical or collimator sights, as well as with a low-magnification optical sight, are often used for driven hunting.
Advantages and disadvantages of MP-94 “North”
The combined shotgun MP-94 “North” (previously called IZH-94 “North”) is a weapon based on the famous double-barreled shotgun IZH-27. If you look at the reviews of the owners of the MP-94 “North”, you can understand that this gun is suitable for hunting only after self-tuning. Most of the guns of this model were produced in caliber 20/70 smooth barrel and 5.6x39 mm - rifled.
The advantages of the MP-94 “North” are as follows:
- The reliability of the weapon is very high. This parameter was inherited from the famous MP-27 double-barreled shotgun, which is famous for its “indestructibility”;
- Small dimensions of the weapon;
- The accuracy of the MP-94 “Sever” rifled barrel is quite high;
- Quiet sound of a shot;
- Ease of replacing barrels on the MP-94 Sever. There is even the opportunity to install two rifled or two smooth barrels, but few people take advantage of this opportunity.
In addition to its advantages, the MP-94 “North” has a number of disadvantages:
- Terrible build quality of the MP-94 Sever. Like most domestic shotguns (especially those made in Izhevsk), the MP-94 “North” combined weapon needs to be “brought to mind” for a long time and painstakingly on your own. For the price this gun is asking for, the build could be much better;
- Incredibly tight trigger, which can only be cured by completely disassembling the gun and subsequent sharpening and polishing of the sear cocks, which is very painstaking work;
- Often the smooth barrel is completely unshot. Many hunters shoot only shot from a smooth barrel, so this problem is not critical for them. For those who often shoot smooth bore bullets, this can pose quite a problem. This is treated by cutting off part of the smooth trunk, and you need to make a bevel, constantly checking the results of the work with a shot. Newer modifications of the MP-94 “North” received a special coupling and replaceable cylinders, which can be manipulated to achieve adjustment without using a file;
- The MP-94 Sever open sight is no good. The rear sight shield is located too close to the eyes, so they quickly get tired and begin to water. This problem can be solved by replacing the rear sight with a ring-type sight.
It turns out that when purchasing an MP-94 “North”, a hunter receives a kind of designer kit, which he needs to work on for a long time and painstakingly, turning it into a full-fledged hunting weapon.
Technical characteristics of MP-94 "North"
Although the MP-94 “Sever” suffers greatly from disgusting factory assembly, the tactical and technical characteristics that were incorporated into this weapon by the manufacturer allow it to achieve good results in hunting. This gun can be successfully used even by women, since the MP-94 “North” has low recoil.
The main technical characteristics of the MP-94 “North” are as follows:
- The total length is 1000 mm. Of this, the barrel accounts for 525 mm;
- The barrels are cold forged and have an oxide coating;
- The top smooth barrel comes in 20 or 12 gauge, with 20 gauge being more common;
- The caliber of a rifled barrel is most often 5.6x39, although upon request you can get a rifled barrel of any caliber approved for use in Russia;
- Weight is about 3.5 kg.
Interestingly, the weight of the MP-94 “Sever” combination shotgun can vary from 3.2 to 3.5 kg. It depends on the caliber of the installed barrels.
Design features of the MP-94 "North"
Since the design of the MP-94 “North” is completely copied from the MP-27, any serious problems rarely arise when operating this gun. In order to shoot accurately, you need to press the trigger smoothly, which is quite a difficult task on an unfinished gun, since the trigger is very tight.
The simplicity of connecting the gun body and its barrel provides the MP-94 “North” with ease of disassembly, which has to be done to change barrels if necessary. The barrel locking unit is as reliable as that of the MP-27, which provides the MP-94 “North” gun with the possibility of many years of operation without the appearance of shatters.
Design
The simple design of the gun means there are no difficulties in its operation. The smoothness of the pistol-type trigger allows you to gently pull the trigger, making the most accurate shots. The model in question consists of a body block and a receiver. Their simple connection ensures ease of disassembly and subsequent assembly, which may be required when repairing, cleaning and improving this gun.
The locking assembly of these two parts is regulated by a locking bar; the forend is secured with a latch on the side surface of the barrel. Both barrels are located in a separate receiver, with the smooth barrel on top and the rifled barrel on the bottom.

IZH-94MR and its features
The IZH-94MR is a combination shotgun that was released to replace the IZH-56 Belka. It confidently occupied the niche of a combined small-caliber rifle for commercial hunting. The combination of a small receiver and the use of a receiver block without a strap made it possible to achieve a low weight of the weapon, which is an important parameter for commercial hunting.
The combination of 410 smooth caliber and rifled 22 caliber allowed professional trappers to kill fur-bearing animals both at close and long distances. Judging by the reviews of hunters, they hunt with this gun not only fur-bearing animals and upland birds, but also small ungulates.
This model has a striking mechanism equipped with automatic cocking, and the IZH-94MR has only one trigger. Thanks to the barrel selection selector, the switching process occurs without any problems, the main thing is to get used to the algorithm of its operation. The IZH-94MR has a simple non-automatic type safety that only locks the trigger.
Open sights consist of a horizontally adjustable rear sight and a front sight that is vertically adjustable. IZH-94MR can be equipped with an optical sight.
MP-94 “Express” and features of this model
Model MP-94 “Express” is an original double-barreled rifle with two rifled barrels. Despite the initial availability of a barrel block with two rifled barrels, it is possible to purchase combined barrel blocks, as well as a barrel block with two smooth barrels.
The MP-94 “Express” model is distinguished by the presence of a reinforced locking unit. This was done so that reinforced Magnum cartridges could be used. The receiver block of the MP-94 "Express" has a strapless connection type, which made it possible to achieve high accuracy when shooting. In addition, this type of connection made it possible to reduce the overall weight of the weapon.
Since the MP-94 “Express” is designed to use powerful ammunition, the designers used the following systems to ensure safety:
- An automatic safety that completely eliminates the possibility of a shot when the barrels are open. This is due to the fact that the safety locks the sear only when the hammers are cocked;
- Thanks to trigger interceptors, if the triggers are accidentally released without pressing the triggers, the shot will not occur.
Since the MP-94 “Express” is a weapon of a higher class than other models of the MP-94 family, the forend and stock of the MP-94 “Express” are made only of walnut or beech.
MP-94 "Taiga" and MP-94R
MP-94 "Taiga" is another modification of the MP-94 combined hunting rifle. Judging by the reviews of hunters, the MP-94 “Taiga” model has a better build quality than the MP-94 “North”. Later Taiga models have an adjustment mechanism that allows you to zero each barrel separately.
The heaviest modification in the MP-94 line of combined shotguns is the MP-94R model. The weight of this model reaches 3.8 kg. Its main feature is the presence of a smooth barrel of 12/70 or 12/76 mm caliber. The lower barrel can be of different calibers.
The MP-94 model range represents original domestically produced models. This gun can be recommended to a hunter who has not decided who exactly he will hunt. It is better for professionals to purchase a multi-shot bolt gun and a classic smooth-bore double-barreled shotgun.
Equipment
- The basic kit includes the gun itself of the selected caliber, a certificate guaranteeing quality, as well as detailed instructions for use.
- The gun is in a polymer film, which prevents the negative impact of external factors on it, and in a cardboard package, which has the necessary information on the name of the product and its manufacturer.
- The box, if available (guns can be sold without a cardboard box) is located in a suitcase, which will make the presentation of such a gun an unforgettable gift for any celebration for every firearms lover.
A comparison of the MP-94 Sever and IZH-94 carbines is given in this video:
Shotgun MP-94 "Taiga" 7.62x54 and 12/76, walnut, D/N, 600mm
Izh 94 is a combined hammerless bullet-shotgun based on MP 27 designed by A. Matveev and V. Votyakov with two barrels paired in a vertical plane:
- upper barrel smooth 12-gauge (12/70 or 12/76), payload or choke, or choke tubes
- lower - rifled, manufactured for various cartridges of 13 main calibers (5.6x50R; 7.62x39; 7.62x51 (.308 Win); 7.62x54R; 9.3x74R; 5.6x50R Mag; 7x65R, etc.).
This allows you to choose a gun that best meets the hunter's requirements.
Peculiarities:
- The design provides for the possibility of manufacturing interchangeable barrels, including both smooth and both rifled.
- Rifled barrels for cartridges with a non-protruding rim have a spring-loaded rod on the extractor, which fits into the groove of the sleeve. Produced since 1992.
- The butt is walnut or beech, the stock is with a pistol neck. Weight without optical sight no more than 3.5 kg.
- Overall dimensions 1020x55x200 mm.
Basically, reviews about the Izh 94 gun are only good. Some examples have the same drawback as MP 27 - a weak blow from the lower striker.
The quality of shotgun fire from a smooth barrel will apparently be somewhat inferior to shotguns with standard-length barrels (711-725 mm), but this should be compensated by the ability to have a powerful shot at medium and large game from a rifled barrel
The forend and stock are made of high quality walnut or beech.
Device :
The MP-94 “NORTH” combined hunting shotgun consists of the following main components:
- barrels with a coupling and a forend cover;
- boxes assembled with a trigger mechanism;
- butt and detachable forend.
Principle of operation:
- The barrel block is locked in the box using a locking bar. The locking mechanism is controlled using the locking lever located at the top of the box. When the barrels are open, the locking bar and locking lever are held in place by a locking bar delay, which automatically releases the locking bar when the barrels are closed.
- When connecting barrels with couplings without interbarrel strips, the lower barrel in the muzzle coupling is installed with a guaranteed gap, which prevents the midpoint of impact (MPO) from shifting due to uneven heating of the barrels during intensive shooting from one of them.
- To increase corrosion resistance, the bore and chamber of the smooth barrel are chrome-plated.
- On the ridge of the breech coupling there is a dovetail-type seat for attaching the optical sight bracket.
- The cartridges are pushed out of the chambers by the ejector when the barrels are opened.
- The gun has a safety located behind the locking lever on the tang of the box. The safety is automatic and is activated every time the locking lever is turned. Shutdown. The fuse is activated by moving the fuse button forward. When the safety is turned on by moving the button back with the triggers pulled, the sears do not lock. When the triggers are subsequently cocked, the safety automatically locks the sear.
- Impact mechanism with strikers made separately from the triggers. The firing mechanism (Trigger Mechanism) has additional safety devices (interceptors or hammer interceptors) to prevent a shot when the hammers are accidentally released from the cocking action without pressing the triggers, for example, when the gun is dropped. The hammers are cocked by cockers when the barrels are opened.
- The right (front) trigger is used to fire a shot from the lower (smooth) barrel, the left (rear) trigger is used to fire a shot from the top (rifled) barrel.
- The gun has the ability to smoothly (stress-free) trigger release. To do this, with the barrels open, move the safety button to the forward position, press both triggers and smoothly close the barrels
Imported combination shotgun
The trend setters for universal weapons at the moment are shotguns from Merkel, Sauer, Ceska Zbrojovka (CZ) and other foreign manufacturers. These large gun companies produce not only double-barreled and triple-barrel (called tee) models, but also four-barrel variants.
CZ 584
Combination shotgun from the Czech company Ceska Zbrojovka. At the moment, it is completely unclear what state the manufacturer and the company as a whole are in, so ordering and purchasing the CZ 584 can be fraught with serious problems.
Happy owners who managed to purchase a Czech universal weapon note a good fight, the amazing lightness of the gun, as well as a very neat (a stone for Izhmash’s garden) front and rear sights, which are convenient to use, which means there is no need to pick up a file and finish something yourself . The folding mechanism of the CZ 584 is extremely reliable, and even over time it will not slack. True, barrel inserts tend to suddenly disappear when transported to Russia. Then the inserts, naturally, pop up, but illegally. So it is recommended to buy combined or rifled CZ weapons if the plant does come back to life.
Merkel shotgun
Today in our country you can find several models of combined weapons of this brand with vertical barrels on sale. We are talking about Merkel SLII and SLIII. These models are created on the same base, both of them are distinguished by a relieved receiver block made of light alloy. The insert, which engages with the grooves of the breech of the barrel block, locks the barrels. Thanks to this design, the required weight and strength characteristics of the pad are achieved. In addition, the safety of using this weapon increases, since with the insert removed, it becomes impossible to lock the barrel and fire a shot. Thus, you just need to hide the insert in the safe, after which the weapon can be safely hung on the wall, decorating the interior and giving it a true hunting style. Without the insert, the gun will no longer fire, which means that for the time being it can safely play the role of a decorative item.
Merkel BBF B-3
The Merkel carbine, like many foreign-made shotguns, is extremely reliable and easy to use. The barrel block has a coupling that does not allow the barrels to “play” by compressing and unclenching, and for a rifled barrel the attachment to the coupling is not so rigid, and it can “float” a little during thermal expansion. Given the unsoldered nature of the blocks, the aiming point does not jump, regardless of how many shots were fired.
The barrels are not adjusted, as on domestic analogues, by inserts, but by two screws with locks, which, again, is much more convenient. This allows you to save a lot of nerves when aligning the average aiming points at a certain distance, which on Izhmash products results in real torture. After correct adjustment and tightening of the screws, further adjustment is not required, unlike TOZs. The locking system is also excellent. This system is rightfully called one of the most reliable and durable, moreover, it is quite easy to remove for cleaning and lubrication. The weapon is cocked only before firing, and before that, regardless of whether a cartridge is inserted or not, the Merkel is absolutely safe.
Characteristics:
- Smooth barrel: 12/76, 20/76;
- Rifled: .223 Rem., .308 Win., 6.5x57R, 7x57R, 7x65R;
- Barrel length 60 cm;
- Weight – 3.1 kg.
In general, for maximum versatility, you can choose a 20/76 smooth barrel (since the 12 gauge is overpowered for bird hunting, especially at close range, while a rifled barrel is more than adequate for large game hunting) and a .308 rifled barrel. Win.
The finish, even in the standard configuration, is not inferior to the Turkish luxury class (and everyone knows how our Middle Eastern neighbors love to decorate their weapons).
Further work with the weapon depends on the tasks assigned to it. If this is shooting from a rifled barrel with a jacketed bullet at hazel grouse, and with a semi-jacketed bullet at large game, then it is recommended to select ammunition with a minimum spread of ballistic characteristics at a distance of up to 300 meters (otherwise you will have to carry a notebook with you about how and when the difference in shooting begins, after all, it’s difficult to retain this information in your head, especially when you see prey).
A cartridge with a large shot or a light bullet of 18-22 grams is selected for a smooth barrel, so that the gun can show itself in all its glory as a double-barreled driven gun, no matter what barrel the fire is fired from - rifled or smooth.
For accurate shooting with a rifled barrel, you should “pump up” the sights: you can install a sight with a magnification of 1 to 6 to achieve the most convenient aiming.
