The starting pistol was previously used only for sporting events. There was no talk of any other use of this type of weapon. Its purpose was determined by the name itself - starting, that is, to give a signal in swimming, athletics, horse racing, greyhound racing and other competitions.
Moreover, to start the stopwatches, the stewards relied not on the sound of the shot, but on the smoke or flash from it. This was due to the fact that the sound, due to the slow speed of transmission, could give some error in time.
In order for all athletes to be in equal conditions and, if possible, to simultaneously hear the sound of a shot, since the 70s of the last century, loudspeakers (speakers) began to be used to transmit it.
The attitude towards starting pistols was ambiguous. In 2009, a petition was submitted to the Olympic Committee on behalf of the State of Washington to abolish the use of starting pistols at the Olympic Games. This request was justified by the fact that a shot from a weapon, even if not a combat weapon, insults the memory of black athletes. Their ancestors lived in slavery under the threat of execution and often fled from armed men. The request was rejected.
In the process of developing automatic timing, attempts were made to abandon firearms and completely replace them with an electronic device that simulates both the sound of a shot and the flash itself. For the first time, such analogues of starting pistols were tested at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. At the next Olympics, the starting firearm returned again. But e-guns were used at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Apparently, the future belongs to these electronic devices.

Hello! In this article I would like to touch upon the rather paradoxical situation that has developed on the civilian weapons market.
On the one hand, the possession of weapons by citizens is strictly regulated, an entire Federal Law “On Weapons” has been adopted, which quite clearly states: what weapons a person can own, at what age, what certificates need to be collected, what training to undergo and how to store these weapons.
But there is one sample that, by all indications, falls under the category of firearms, but to acquire it you don’t need anything other than money, I’m talking about a “rocket launcher”.
So, what is a “rocket launcher”...
In fact, the “rocket launcher” is a single-shot, smooth-bore, fourth-caliber pistol, or in other words 26 mm caliber, the official name is “Signal Pistol.”
Can you imagine a sawed-off single-barreled shotgun?! This is about the same thing, only the caliber is larger! As the name suggests, the pistol is designed to provide light and smoke signals depending on the type of ammunition, of which quite a large number have been developed.
An ordinary signal cartridge is not much different from a cartridge for a hunting rifle, the only difference being that instead of a bullet or shot charge, a lighting or other composition is charged, which ignites when fired and continues to burn during flight.

In general, the range of 4th caliber ammunition is quite wide; in addition to signal and smoke cartridges, there are shotgun and traumatic 4th caliber cartridges, as well as gas cartridges equipped with a small gas grenade with tear gas “Cheryomukha-4”.
True, this ammunition was developed for the KS-23 Drozd carbine, which is used by special forces, and is not intended for use in a signal pistol, but it is not difficult to fire them from a rocket launcher.
A completely exotic ammunition for a rocket launcher is a silent cartridge developed by Yugoslav gunsmiths.
The 26 mm caliber cartridge was developed by the Austrian company EBW and was commissioned by the Yugoslav Navy.
The signal cartridge has a charge weight of about 30 grams. and the charge lifting height is up to 120m. And when such a charge hits a person, the latter’s chances of survival tend to zero, that is, in fact, we have a lethal firearm,
Types of pistols
Starting pistols can be divided into the following groups: electronic, which appeared more than twenty years ago, and the usual “mechanical” models.
Mechanical models are not as reliable as their modern counterparts. Any pistol can misfire, store-bought models are especially prone to this. Drum pistols are more often used: even if it misfires, you can quickly fire the next shot.
An electronic starting pistol bears little resemblance to a military weapon. It gives off a bright flash of light. The rapid propagation of light waves allows all athletes to see the signal simultaneously.
