Walther P38, Umarex, PPK/S – German air pistol Walther

History of the brand

The story of the Walters began with a great secret: they began to develop this weapon back in 1926, almost a hundred years ago, in top secret conditions.

The official version of the reason for the creation of the new weapon was police weapons, and only a few knew that in fact it was a military weapon for the army.

The famous nine-millimeter Parabellum cartridges required a redesign of the Walther - a pistol from the Second World War (war) - so the weapon was increased in size and became a copy of its previous version, the Walter PP.

A short open bolt, chamber sensor, double trigger and hidden hammer mechanism are the main characteristics of the resulting pistol.

Interestingly, the pioneers of this and other newly created models were not the Germans themselves, but the Swedes. Sweden purchased a small test batch of weapons first and was very pleased with the results. This is how the Walters entered service with the First World Army.

A lot of time has passed since the introduction of innovations of that time into Walter firearms, in particular the 1941 pistol, and most of the well-known models acquired pneumatic copies.

We will talk about them further. Also see the material about the Beretta 92 air pistol.

Design

The Umarex Walther P38 pneumatic has good power and accuracy, but it is not suitable for athletes, only for low-level competitions. But with this pistol you can have great fun outdoors when shooting at bottles. Connoisseurs of historical replicas will be able to confidently choose this model for their collection.

Umarex Walter P38 is as similar as possible to its combat counterpart. Both in appearance and in the performance of all mechanisms and components, there are no non-working elements among them. The barrel box stopper flag, the bolt delay, the safety lever are functioning, and the magazine release button is in the place where it should be - at the bottom of the handle. The handle has an eyelet for a carabiner with a strap. The cheeks on the handle are made of plastic, it imitates wood, they have grooved linings.

The replica pistol fires 4.5 mm copper-plated balls. The barrel is made of metal and has no rifling. The principle of operation is a CO2 gas cartridge, simulating the return of the bolt. A 12 g cylinder is installed, the clamping screw is located under the cheek of the handle. This compartment can be accessed from the left side. The overlay is removed by “tearing off” at the bottom.

All elements of the pistol are made of aluminum alloy. The outer coating is black paint, which imitates bluing. The standard sights are a rear sight and a front sight; they are not adjustable.

The release mechanism is single. The first manipulation is the usual jerking of the shutter. Subsequently, shots are fired by self-cocking. The trigger is on the outside, precisely positioned as in a combat pistol. Manual safety. Its lever is on the left side. We must not forget that in the “stop” mode it is in a lowered, not raised state.

The pistol magazine is released by pressing the latch, which is located at the bottom of the handle. The clip is charged with 20 copper-plated balls through the top of the round hole (first, the tongue of the pusher must be pressed down and snapped into place). Then remove the decorative cheek of the handle from the left side, catching it in the recess from below. A CO2 cylinder is placed in the compartment and secured with a screw. There is no need to tighten the clamping bolt too much, otherwise you can jam the bolt.

To fire the first shot, you must either pull the bolt or cock the hammer. Then the shooting is carried out by self-cocking until the cylinder or bullets in the magazine run out. When the last cartridge leaves the clip, the shutter is delayed. The bolt frame is released using a lever located on the left side, above the trigger guard.

When the safety is active (the lever points down), the trigger hook is completely jammed - the safety latch holds the trigger sear lever and does not allow the bolt to move. Do not apply force to the trigger and bolt without making sure that the safety is not set to the “Fire” position, otherwise you may break the trigger mechanism.

When the shutter is pulled, it catches the rammer, it slides freely along the bypass tube of the expansion chamber, and pulls it behind it. The bullet from the magazine is fed into the rammer hole. After the bolt returns to its original position, the rammer enters the plastic coupling on the barrel and connects to it. So, the cartridge is in the breech. The Walter mechanism allows you to pull the bolt one more time and place a second steel ammunition in the barrel.

Before shooting, the safety flag must be positioned all the way up. The trigger press is transmitted by a rod (located on the right side, under the lower part of the body) to the trigger sear rod, and this allows the latter to break away from the firing position. The trigger hits the firing pin, which passes through the blowback piston, and with a sharp short-term movement it presses the bypass valve. A certain volume of gas supplied from the cylinder affects both the bullet in the barrel and the blowback system.

Device and circuit

Walter P38 pistol diagram

The design of this weapon has been brought to such practical perfection that even in modern drawings relative to those made about a hundred years ago, corrections remain insignificant.

The weapon consists of exactly 39 parts - an interesting fact. The safety on the bolt is located on the left side, but the bolt is not blocked and the weapon is ready to reload even when the safety is on.

The trigger is designed as a trigger, and the sleeve itself acts as a piston, since piston gases press on it. Read about which air gun to choose here.

Disassembly and cleaning

The pistol is disassembled after the safety is engaged. After safety, the pistol is unloaded. The trigger guard must be pulled down. The bolt must be pulled back as far as possible, lifted and released forward, removing it from the barrel. The weapon is assembled in reverse order. Watch the video:

The air gun must be cleaned regularly and very carefully. To do this, purchase the necessary tools - such as a cleaning rod and lubricant.

As for brass brushes, it is better to buy several, because during use they very quickly lose their “fluffy” appearance and require replacement.

Immediately after purchase, it is recommended to remove the preservative lubricant from the weapon, wipe it dry, and then lubricate it again with fresh weapon oil.

Repairs to a Walter air pistol are rarely required, but in this case, if the warranty period has not expired, you just need to contact the company where you received the weapon.

Walter P38 equipment

Umarex Walter P38 is packaged in a beautiful cardboard package, with a model of the pistol and the torso of a German soldier drawn directly on it. In addition to the pistol with a magazine, the package contains an instruction manual, but it is not in Russian. However, this is compensated by the many large pictures, taking into account which everything is clear even without it.
