Automatic (assault rifle) Zastava M64 / M70 / M77 / M92

Zastava M70 carbine or Mauser for 50 thousand

When purchasing a rifled carbine, a pertinent question arises as to what is the best choice. Of course, we are talking about the standard version of the popular hunting caliber 308Win and 30-06 with a plastic stock. To find the exact answer and make the right decision, you need to see Mauser, which is produced in Serbia and Slovakia. The Zastava M70 is produced with a fuse of its own design, but the bolt is an original Mauser design.

Zastava LK M70 PS is a standard version (without optics) of a carbine with a plastic stock, caliber - 308Win (7.62x51) or 30-06 (7.62x63). The sample in question has a barrel whose length is 600 mm, as well as a muzzle cut of 14 mm (outer diameter). The sight devices are mechanical and adjustable in two planes. The rear sight has a semicircular slot, a front sight with a ball located on the top, with a protection ring. If necessary, transportation or carrying on a belt, the rear sight folds up. The sight line has a length of 420 mm, and is optimal for accurately aiming at an average hunting shooting distance.

Chrome vanadium steel is used to make the cold forged barrel. The channel in the barrel remains unchromed. On the receiver there are threaded holes for a sight bracket: optical or collimator (the holes are plugged if there is no sight). On the left is the shutter stop button. When the two-position fuse is turned on, the shutter is blocked. The right side of the safety bracket has a fixed magazine release release.

You can read about the pros and cons of a non-removable magazine in the article “Magazine in hunting weapons”.

This creates ease of use. The store's equipment does not create difficulties for the user, even if he is wearing gloves made of thin material. Possibility of loading cartridges through a window located in the upper part of the receiver. Unloading is done through the magazine lid that opens downwards.

The bolt has an original Mauser design and features a safety lock.

The carbine bolt consists of two front and one rear lugs. You can lock the receiver lug by turning the bolt handle to the right, then sharply all the way down. Mauser-type bolts have another undeniable advantage - the reliable operation of the ejector, which powerfully throws spent cartridges out of the chamber. Reliability is demonstrated by controlled cartridge feeding. At the same time, it is delivered from the store without any bumps or distortions.

The M70 PS is equipped with a trigger mechanism that reduces the effort required to pull the trigger. In this case, in order to cock the inertial trigger, you have to press the trigger forward. The main descent is carried out as usual. When there is a need to cancel the shot, the switched-on safety switch turns off the trigger. Taking into account the characteristics of the carbine, it is necessary to pay attention to the shooter’s preparation for working with the inertial trigger. This is an undoubted advantage of this modification, and subsequently it gives good results in hunting.

The carbine has a black plastic stock with special places that make it easier to grip and apply. The stock has a pistol-shaped "boar's back" handle.

The shooting accuracy of the Zastava M70 PS carbine at a distance of 100m with an optical sight is quite acceptable, with a regular gross cartridge, an average shooter “puts” a group of 5 rounds into 1-1.5 MOA.

In conclusion, we can say that the Zastava M70 PS hunting carbine creates a very real alternative to domestic models, both in terms of workmanship and at a very reasonable price. You can check the availability of carbines, modifications and prices in the supplier catalog.

M64A

In the 1960s, in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, under license, the production of an exact copy of the Soviet 7.62-mm Kalashnikov assault rifle, adopted by the Yugoslav army under the designation M64, was launched.

However, the designers of the famous weapons manufacturer Zavody Crvena Zastava (Kragujevac, Serbia) proposed a slightly modernized version of the machine gun.

The new model of the machine gun, designated “M64 A” (unlike the Soviet AK), received new sights, an orthopedic pistol fire control handle with recesses for the fingers, a wider fixed buttstock with a changed angle of inclination and a forend with 3 slots instead of 2. x y AK.

M64B

The most important improvement was related to the ability of the Zastava M64 A assault rifle to fire rifle grenades using a blank shot. For this purpose, a mechanism was installed on the gas outlet of the Yugoslav machine gun that blocked the access of gases to the piston, the lever of which was also a sight for firing rifle grenades. Instead of a removable compensator, a special attachment for shooting grenades was installed. Rifle grenades were fired from an attachment mounted on the barrel using a special blank cartridge.

In addition to the “M64 A” assault rifle, the “M64 B” variant was also proposed, differing only in the metal butt folding down and forward.

However, the Zastava M64 A and M64 B assault rifles were not adopted by the Yugoslav army, but served as the basis for the creation of new modifications of the M70 series.

In 1970, the "M70" (fixed stock) and "M70 A" (folding stock) models were offered, differing from the M64 series with a new plastic pistol grip, sights similar to those used on the Soviet AK, and minor internal changes.

M70 AB2
After a number of design improvements with models of the M70 series, assault rifles with the designation “M70 B1” (with a fixed stock) and “M70 AB2” (with a folding stock) of 7.62x39 mm caliber were adopted by the Yugoslav Army.

In the new assault rifles, the receiver, unlike previous versions, was made by stamping, the possibility of shooting rifle grenades from the attachment was left, and the installation of optical and night sights was also provided for mounting on the left side of the receiver.

M70 AB2 with optical sight installed

The Zastava M70 model was created specifically for the civilian weapons market without the ability to fire automatically.

In 1977, on the basis of the Zastava M70 assault rifle, the “M77 B1” (with a fixed butt) and “M77 AB1” (with a folding butt) models were developed for export sale, but chambered for the 7.62x51 mm NATO caliber cartridge and differing from the basic versions in an elongated barrel, modified magazine and compensator.

M92
In addition, in the early 1990s, based on the Yugoslav assault rifle of the Zastava M70 family and the Soviet AKS-74U, a shortened Zastava M92 assault rifle of 7.62x39 mm caliber with a folding down-forward butt was created.

By design, from the point of view of all mechanisms, the Zastava family assault rifles are an exact copy of the Kalashnikov assault rifle with a gas automatic engine, magazine feed and air-cooled barrel, with the ability to conduct single and automatic types of fire.

The Zastava M70 family of assault rifles was used by the armed forces of Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia.

Review of the Zastava M85 carbine

The Zastava M85 multi-purpose carbine is an excellent automatic Yugoslav weapon produced at one time, being a shortened version of the Zastava M90 assault rifle, a direct descendant in the series that followed the Zastava M70. External data is taken from the famous Soviet assault rifles AKMSU and AKS74U, it is adapted for cartridges used in NATO countries, caliber 5.56 × 45.00 mm.

As of today, serial production has been suspended. However, the engineers and gunsmiths of the Serbian enterprise Crvena Zastava from the city of Kragujevac and the creation of the M 85 assault rifle were quite successful in their desire to conquer the markets of Western Europe thanks to the basic AKM model.

An overview of the Zastava M85 carbine is shown in the video below:

Advantages and disadvantages

Zastava M85 DAT hunting rifles are adapted to the original Mauser locking system, which has become a legend due to its unique indicators of reliability, quality, durability and reliability in operation. The use of a steel alloy with chromium-vanadium additives and the manufacture of the barrel by cold forging allows us to guarantee high accuracy, accuracy and percentage of hits. A natural material – stained walnut – was perfect for the bed.

Experts note a certain rigidity of the action, the need to apply a certain force when cocking the mechanism into a painful position. In field conditions, the magazine can be seen to wobble and the possibility of dirt getting into the barrel.
