Review of the VPO 208 smoothbore carbine - many possibilities at an affordable price!
The VPO 208 smoothbore carbine is a modification of the 1945 Simonov self-loading carbine, which has a 14-centimeter rifling. Powerful, reliable and durable, it perfectly combines the advantages of a rifled weapon without the need to obtain a corresponding license. It differs from the classic Simonov carbine in its equipment: an internal Paradox attachment, the presence of six right-hand rifling, which has a great effect on the firing range and accuracy of hits.
Perfect for hunting large animals from a distance of 150 meters, it has soft recoil and is suitable for firing 7.62, 366 TKM cartridges. The price of cartridges for this specimen is quite reasonable - from 40-50 rubles per piece. The carbine has a non-removable magazine with a capacity of 10 rounds. The VPO-208 uses gas-operated automatics, which have a short stroke of the existing gas piston, which is located directly above the barrel. It has a steel receiver; the process of locking the barrel bore is realized by skewing the bolt, being in a vertical plane.

The carbine has a wooden stock, with a semi-pistol neck. The VPO 208 shotgun weighs 3.4 kg and does not have a powerful recoil. The ergonomics of each of the structural parts of the carbine successfully allows you to accompany the entire process of its operation with sufficient convenience and comfort. Such unique aiming is ensured by the perfectly flat shape of the receiver; even attaching an optical sight, front sight and forend to it will not reduce the shooting performance due to the use of both a particularly strong steel alloy in the manufacture of the barrel and the form of attachment of attachments that does not change the flight path of the fired bullet . Modern design, excellent design with natural wood inserts can attract the attention of buyers to the carbine; the price worthy of high quality is quite reasonable.

On the manufacturer’s Internet portal the price is 40 thousand rubles. Within this amount, the estimated cost was indicated at the beginning of the year.
The hunting rifle weighs 4.3 kg and looks very stylish, with a walnut stock. There are no excesses that distract the shooter’s attention.
Weapons for hunting appeared on the basis of the Vepr-Pioneer carbine SOK-97R and SOK-94R. VPO-212 is chambered in .366 TKM. The kit includes a 5-round magazine.

Design
As already mentioned, the VPO-209 carbine is designed on the basis of the AKM (modernized Kalashnikov assault rifle), therefore it inherited from it the main design elements and principle of operation.
The VPO-209 barrel is made using cold forging technology and has an oxide coating to prevent corrosion. The barrel has a Paradox rifling with six rifling 125-135 mm long, located in the muzzle of the barrel.
The trigger mechanism is non-removable, hammer-type, and allows only single shots. The safety lock of the VPO-209 carbine ensures maximum safety of using the carbine.
All materials from which the main parts of the carbine are made, including the barrel, receiver and butt, are of high quality. When the carbine is used in fairly harsh conditions, the VPO-209 carbine retains its attractive appearance, despite mechanical stress, temperature changes, and exposure to high humidity.
The carbine magazine holds 10 rounds. The carbine is equipped with open sights: rear sight and front sight; if desired, the owner of the carbine can equip it with an optical or collimator sight.
Tuning vpo 208
It is possible to change the classic look of the Simonov carbine using various devices, adding to it the necessary exclusivity in appearance; tuning vpo 208 includes:
- ATI “Strikeforce” stock;
- butts;
- forend;
- orthopedic beds;
- weapon racks;
- telescopic cane supports.
Operating principle
The operating principle of the automatic rifle VPO-209 is based on the use of the energy of powder gases.
When the trigger is pressed, the trigger disengages from the sear, and under the action of the mainspring, it strikes the firing pin vigorously, which pierces the igniter, and a shot occurs.
When fired, powder gases are diverted from the barrel bore into the gas chamber, pushing the gas piston, which in turn pushes back the bolt frame with the bolt. The cartridge case is removed from the chamber and ejected from the receiver. The mainspring is cocked and the trigger engages with the sear.
Under the action of the return spring, a cartridge from the magazine is fed into the chamber, the bolt rotates and locks onto two lugs. The carbine is ready for the next shot.
When you press the trigger again, everything repeats.
Thanks to the gas exhaust principle of operation, VPO-209 has relatively low recoil.
Unlike the AKM assault rifle, the VPO-209 carbine cannot fire in bursts.
Disassembly
The owner of the VPO-209 carbine periodically needs to disassemble the carbine for cleaning and maintenance.
In order to disassemble VPO-209, perform the following steps:
- Separate the store
- Remove cartridges from the magazine and chamber
- Remove the receiver cover, remove the return spring
- Pull the bolt carrier back and remove it from the receiver.
- Separate the shutter
- Separate the gas tube
VPO-209, like any other firearm, requires compliance with safety measures when handling it. Observe the following precautions when handling it:
- Always treat the rifle as if it were loaded.
- Never point the rifle at people or animals
- Before firing, make sure that the shot is in a safe direction and remember the range of the bullet.
- As soon as you pick up the rifle, make sure there are no cartridges in the magazine or chamber.
- Before loading the rifle, make sure that there are no foreign objects in the chamber and bore.
- If the shot misfires, do not open the shutter for 10-15 seconds, due to the danger of a prolonged shot.
- Always unload your gun when approaching a populated area, when getting into a car or boat, or before overcoming obstacles.
- Store the rifle separately from cartridges, out of the reach of children and strangers.
- Always use only commercially manufactured cartridges that have not expired.
Follow these simple safety rules and the VPO-209 carbine will serve you faithfully for many years.
Pros of VPO-136
- Possibility of using military magazines (of course, after installing a capacity limiter in them).
Without any questions, I attached a mock-up (with sawed-off jaws) of a RPK magazine to the VPO-136. If this magazine were in working order, there would be no problems with its use (except for an illegal container). It should be noted here that the Law on Weapons of the Russian Federation regulates the maximum magazine capacity (no more than 10 rounds), and not the number of cartridges in the magazine. That is, if the owner of a carbine is caught with a 30-magazine clipped on, containing 10 or less rounds of ammunition, the joint venture will have every reason to draw up a report and punish such an owner. - A loose muzzle tube (compensator or thread protection nut). This allows you to completely legally install a variety of flash suppressors and DTK on the carbine. Just in case, let me remind you that installing devices to reduce the sound of a shot is prohibited. But if you have a mock-up silencer that does not impede the passage of a bullet, but also does not reduce the sound of a shot, then you can easily screw on such a mock-up for purely decorative purposes.
- Absolutely complete mount for a bayonet knife. I did not find any prohibitions in the law on attaching a knife to a weapon. And for example, souvenir versions of the NS-AK bayonet are sold freely, and nothing prevents its installation on the VPO-136.
- The carbines (except for the wrong batch, see below) are equipped with military-grade 30-place aluminum “landing” magazines (with a wire stopper).
- All original marks are preserved, the carbine number is the number of the donor machine.
- There is no pin in the barrel, the barrel is not weakened by through drilling, and nothing scratches the bullet.
- There is no hole in the chamber, the chrome in the chamber is intact, and after firing the cartridge case is completely intact.
Tuning
VPO-209 allows tuning at the request of its owner. Most often, the VPO-209 is improved by installing an optical or collimator sight on it, as well as replacing the butt with one more suitable for its owner.
Owner reviews
