Self-loading smoothbore shotguns can hardly be called a novelty - the first representative of the class, the legendary “Browning Auto-5” appeared back in 1903. However, the distribution of such shotguns was initially limited, and in the Soviet Union, until its last years, the established image of a hunter was firmly associated with a double-barreled shotgun.
In the post-perestroika years, the situation began to change - factories, hoping to attract new buyers, began to expand their production program. And one of the first domestic semi-automatic devices that became truly widespread and “popular” was the Izhevsk MP-153 shotgun.
About the MP-155 gun
The MP-155 is a gun that replaced the outdated model MP-153, which was manufactured in 2000. Over the course of 10 years, global competitors appeared that were better than the MP-153 in many respects:
- Product weight.
- Lack of space for installing optics.
- It is not possible to adjust the butt retraction along the length, horizontal, or vertical.
- Comfortable when holding a weapon.
Already in 2010, a decision was made to manufacture a new model of the MP-155 shotgun. The main task in the creation process was to preserve the advantages of previous weapons, which include:
- Reliability.
- Work with different ammunition.
- Installation of a folding stock or pistol grip.
- Possibility to increase the magazine stock by installing an extension cord.
The improved gun relied on weight reduction, ergonomics and balance improvements. To reduce weight, it was decided to review the materials used to create the weapon. The receiver body was made of aluminum.
Unlike the MP-153 shotgun, the MP-155 had the gas pressure adjustment unit moved from the rack to the piston, which made it possible to significantly reduce the weight of the barrel.
Installing a new trigger mechanism on the product reduced the weight of the weapon and increased its reliability due to the use of fewer parts. The USM base is made of high-strength polyamide.
For the sake of convenience, we decided to make the fuse and holder buttons large.
An arched sighting bar was installed on the MP-155 gun, which made this weapon more aesthetically pleasing and also managed to reduce the weight of the product. The new design strap was attached to the barrel using a new soldering technology using silver-containing solder. In order to prevent marks from appearing on the barrel bore when exposed to high soldering temperatures, honing technology was introduced, which made it possible to improve the bore geometry.
Thus, it was possible to create a new product MP-155, which included all the advantages of the previous MP-153 gun. The new model has become more ergonomic, lighter and the length of the receiver chambered for the 12/76 cartridge has become shorter, which also affects the weight of the product.
MP-155 acquired the following properties:
- Possibility of installing optical and collimator sights.
- A cut-off magazine has been introduced, which allows you to quickly change the type of cartridge used, blocking the feed from the main magazine.
- The gun has become more convenient to use for left-handed people.
Advantages of MP-153
- The main advantage of the gun is its inexpensive price; in terms of price-quality ratio, the gun has no equal, neither among domestic guns, nor even more so foreign ones.
- The gun is omnivorous, the gun fires cartridges with almost any weight of shot and gunpowder, ranging from 24 to 66 grams. You can also use cartridges with an 89 mm sleeve. The adjustable gas piston, if necessary, can be adjusted to the appropriate type of ammunition. Gun jams are extremely rare and are most often associated with either low-quality cartridges or insufficient care of the gun.
- The gun's rate of fire is its great advantage over classic double-barreled shotguns, especially when hunting waterfowl.
- The reliability of the gun, the gun continues to work in any weather conditions, regardless of water, dirt, or low temperature. In terms of reliability, it can be compared with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. The gun forgives the owner even careless use.
- The gun has quite comfortable recoil, thanks to its heavy weight and its gas-operated operating principle.
- The MP-153 shotgun can be easily tuned and repaired; any spare parts and tuning elements can be easily found on sale (stocks, magazine extensions, barrel extensions, etc.). The shotgun can be repaired in any gunsmith workshop or even a gun store.
- The warranty life of the MP-153 shotgun is 3000 shots. As practice shows, a gun can withstand 4000-5000 rounds, only after that problems and the need for repairs appear. Although, of course, a lot depends on the owner of the gun and how he operated and maintained it. In any case, the MP-153 is the most reliable of the domestic semi-automatic shotguns.
Description of the gun IZH-27 (MR-27)
IZH-27 shotguns are commercially produced in 12, 16, 20 and 28 calibers. The weight of the guns ranges from 3 to 3.6 kg and depends on the caliber of the gun and the length of the barrels.
A gun can have both permanent and replaceable choke constrictions, permanent choke constrictions: as a rule, a choke in the upper barrel and a choke in the lower. Replaceable choke tubes are preferable as they give the gun greater versatility.
The barrels have a ventilated rib, the bores and chambers are chrome-plated, and the outer surfaces of the gun are anodized or oxidized.
The connection of the barrels with the block is carried out due to the under-barrel hooks and the hinge axis. The barrels are connected to the block by means of under-barrel hooks and a hinge.
Locking occurs using a locking bar that fits into the groove of the rear grenade hook. The barrels are locked by a movable locking bar on the rear hook of the barrel coupling.
When the barrels are opened, the hammers are cocked. The hammers are cocked when the barrels are opened.
The trigger mechanism allows for a smooth release of the hammers from cocking when closing the barrels. The trigger mechanism smoothly releases the triggers when the receiver is closed.
The cartridges are removed from the chamber using an extractor. Technical characteristics of IZH-27E: it is distinguished by the fact that it is equipped with a spent cartridge ejector and is switchable. In the gun, the cartridges are pulled out by a common extractor, and in the IZH-27E model, an ejector mechanism is introduced, which can be turned off by the owner in a simple way, without the use of any special tool (only a screwdriver is required).
USM
The trigger mechanism of the gun has internal triggers, mounted partly in the gun box, partly on a separate lower base. The mechanism of the gun has interceptors that intercept the triggers in the event of an accidental fall of the gun; this feature makes the IZH-27 safer compared to other guns. The mainsprings are twisted cylindrical. The gun also has an inertial disconnector in the design of its mechanism, which eliminates the possibility of a double shot, which also makes using the gun safer.
Since 1972, the gun has been produced with two triggers; in 1977, a mechanism with one trigger was developed, which has the ability to switch the shot order. Initially, the trigger mechanism of the IZH-27-1S (IZH-27E-1S) shotgun with one trigger was developed for the IZH-25 sporting shotgun; it is also used in the IZH-39 shotgun. After loading the gun, the order of shots is standard: lower-upper barrel; to switch the order, you need to pull the trigger forward; after the next reloading, the previous order of shots will be restored. The gun's firing pins are made separate from the hammers, have a fairly large output (up to 2.2 mm), and have return springs. In general, the IZH-27 USM is very reliable and, as a rule, does not raise any questions among hunters.
Butt
The stock on IZH-27 guns can be made of either walnut or beech; on serial guns the butt has a pistol-type neck; on piece guns and guns made to order it can be of any shape. The forend is detachable; when using the gun, especially when assembling and disassembling, you need to be careful and careful to avoid cracks on it.
Comparisons and differences
For a more detailed comparison of types, you should carefully read the characteristics of each gun:
Characteristics | MP-155 | MP-156 |
Shooting mode | Semi-automatic | Semi-automatic |
Barrel length (mm) | 610, 660, 710 and 750 | 710 |
Caliber | 12/76 and 20/76 | 12/76 |
Store capacity | 4 | 4 |
Availability of mounting space for optics | Available | Available |
Aim | Mechanical | Mechanical |
Butt plate type | Rubber | Rubber |
Weapon weight (kg) | 3,1 | 3,1 |
Automation type | Gas outlet | Inertial |
Butt and fore-end material | Plastic/walnut | nut |
Having clearly seen the characteristics, the main difference between the two types of guns is that the MP-155 is a weapon equipped with gas-operated automatics, and the MP-156 is an inertial-type automatic.
The inertial-type automation engine of the MP-156 sample is located in place of the MP-155 gas engine. A weight was installed to replace the piston, which compresses the working spring under the influence of inertial forces. The gun works with all hunting cartridges weighing over 32 grams.
Reviews and analogues of MP-153
As for reviews from real owners of the MP-153, the situation here is ambiguous. Those hunters who have modified their semi-automatic machine speak extremely positively about it. Those who don’t want to bother with modifications often complain about bad Izhevsk assemblers. If the future owner is not ready to bother with modifications, it is better for him to refuse to purchase this semi-automatic machine.
As analogues, we can recommend more expensive and high-quality foreign models of guns of a similar class or a new model from the Izhevsk plant - MP-155. The new model has become much lighter and is also available in 20 gauge.
At first glance, the MP-153 semi-automatic shotgun makes a favorable impression. The gun has a good grip and has a sharp action. If you initially eliminate factory defects and monitor the state of operation of the automation, the gun will please its owner for many years. The problem is that not every hunter is ready to take such care of his weapon.
Modifications
Over the 12 years of production of the gun, it had a large number of modifications for different conditions of use:
- Hunting modifications - the largest number of design options: can be with a chamber of 76 or 89 mm, the butt can be made of wood or plastic, the barrel length can be: 610, 660, 710, 750 mm, choke constrictions can be either replaceable or permanent .
- MP-153S is a service model, produced in 2005-2006 and intended for use in private security companies. The MP-153S has a shortened barrel with a length of 510 mm, a constant muzzle constriction, like a cylinder. Chambered for 12/76 cartridge. The buttstock of this model is folding, the frame has a shoulder rest, the buttstock is removable. The model has a pistol grip made of black plastic. A special feature of this model is the ability to fire with the stock removed.
- Remington Spartan 453 - the MP-153 shotgun under this brand was produced at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant in 2006-2008 for export to the USA. MP-153 for practical shooting is a modification of the MP-153 shotgun, manufactured in accordance with IPSC rules and intended for sports use. It has a magazine for 9 rounds of 12/70, the receiver has a Picatinny rail for mounting a sight, large safety and interceptor buttons, the butt and fore-end are made of impact-resistant plastic.
- 18.5 KS-P modification of the MP-153, which has been in service with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation since 2006. Part of SSK-18.5 - Special Rifle Complex of 18.5 mm caliber. The carbine has a 6-round magazine, a folding stock, a plastic fore-end and a pistol grip. The receiver has a Picatinny rail designed for mounting various types of sights. The carbine allows you to fire both different types of bullets (lead, armor-piercing, rubber) and special grenades (flash-noise, tear gas). Not intended for free sale.
Main problems and their solutions
Having brought a new weapon home, you should immediately (before the first hunt) carry out a number of preventive operations on it to prevent damage during shooting. Thus, the wooden stock of the MP-153 can crack after the first shots. Therefore, you should remove it and, using a narrow chisel, slightly deepen the groove in the front end, which at the moment of rollback enters the shank of the bolt frame. Its overhang is about 6 mm, so it is better to cut the groove with a small margin - to a depth of 8 mm. At the same time, you can lightly cut off the tree hanging over the receiver (primarily in its upper part). You can also customize the geometry of the pistol grip. Shorten or lengthen the stock by processing the front end or using a self-made gasket. Treated areas must be wiped with a rag soaked in linseed oil. If the MP-153 shotgun you purchased has a folding stock, then the procedures described above do not need to be carried out.
Also, if desired, you can take care of the metal even before the first shooting. For example, remove burrs and sharp edges in the receiver and other parts, grind and polish the frame, bolt, and gas outlet parts. And also make a radial notch on the front of the tray for feeding cartridges, in order to eliminate the “biting” of the finger when filling the magazine. When carrying out all these operations, we should not forget that all work must be performed without fanaticism, adhering to the principle: “think a hundred times and change your mind once.”
Competitors
To understand what prospects the MP-155 shotgun, the characteristics of which we reviewed today, has, it is worth comparing it with its main competitors. Italian shotguns have excellent ergonomics, excellent technical and combat characteristics and the highest level of finishing. It is precisely in terms of the level of finishing that, first of all, Izhevsk weapons are distinguished. But as for the performance characteristics, included options and reliability, the MP-155 shotgun looks very decent, even in comparison with Italian models
It is also important to note here that guns made in Italy can cost 50 and 100 thousand rubles, while Russian weapons are several times cheaper
Things are more complicated if we compare Izhevsk guns with Turkish ones. Here the price is already quite comparable. Turkish models are famous for their high level of finishing, which is growing every year. Meanwhile, Russian guns stay afloat thanks to their reliability and durability. Time will tell how successful the MP-155 model will be. Izhevsk produces good weapons, and it is already obvious that the gun has every chance of achieving the same popularity as the MP-153. Now let's find out how real users respond to this weapon.
Description of MP-153
Smoothbore semiautomatic with adjustable gas piston. The magazine is under-barrel, tubular, with the possibility of extension. The stock is semi-pistol, can be made of solid wood or plastic.
Hunting with MP-153 is shown in this video:
Advantages and disadvantages
- Extremely unpretentious to operating conditions. Uses all types of ammunition, including those with extended (89 mm) cartridges. The adjustable piston of the gas engine allows you to shoot with both minimum and maximum powder loads.
- The under-barrel magazine does not allow the use of ammunition with a pointed bullet, as this risks puncturing the primer and causing an explosion.
- There is no mechanism for intercepting cartridges in the magazine; it will not be possible to quickly change the type of cartridge equipment.
- The safety button is located in the rear branch of the trigger guard. It is small and not very convenient to use, especially in winter.
- There are no recesses on the receiver cover for installing optics mounts. But the front sight is made of fiber optics, which makes aiming easier.
- The weight of the weapon exceeds that of similar foreign-made models, although this is a consequence of an excessive safety margin.
- The manufacturing quality of the gun is low and varies from batch to batch. This fact is reflected even in the operating instructions, which require shooting one hundred rounds of cartridges with a maximum load to grind in the mechanisms.
- The barrels have a threaded end for installing replaceable choke constrictions. They are placed inside the trunk, which is not considered the best option by all hunters.
- The bolt handle is held very weakly in the stem, cases of loss are not uncommon, so it is better to have an emergency supply. During disassembly, the magazine plug may spontaneously fly out, resulting in the loss of the cartridge feeder spring.
It lends itself well to modernization; buttstocks of a different design can be installed without problems. There are a lot of spare parts, there are no problems with weapon repair.

Purpose
The gun is used for feather hunting, this is its main purpose. Medium-sized ungulates can be caught. Models with high-quality barrels can be used for bench shooting. It is also used as a weapon of self-defense.
Varieties
The MP-153 is produced in twelve gauge, with chambers of 76 and 89 mm.
- Hunting models have a semi-pistol stock made of wood or plastic and barrels with lengths of 610, 660, 710 and 750 mm. They are optionally adapted for shooting not only lead, but also steel shot. There are barrels with a constant taper, while others are threaded for installing replaceable nozzles. Based on their design, the models are divided into regular ones, with a blued receiver, and “Prestige”, the receiver of which is decorated with a pattern made by photo-etching.
- The MP-153C service model is equipped with a short barrel 510 mm long with a permanent cylinder-type drill. The stock is folding. This is a triangular frame with a shoulder rest. It can be removed. The pistol grip is made of black plastic and is placed at an angle of 80 degrees to the receiver and has a faint corrugation on the front edge. There is no provision for locking the trigger mechanism when the stock is folded.
Advantages and disadvantages
The main advantage of the MP-153 was the trouble-free operation of its automation. It didn’t matter what cartridge or what equipment was used – you could simply “load and shoot” without making any additional adjustments. And the very ability to use ammunition of varying power is a significant advantage.
The disadvantages of a gun are usually the low quality of finish.
This was even indirectly acknowledged by the operating instructions, which advised that the first shots should be fired specifically to break in the mechanisms. But a shotgun was initially considered an inexpensive, “budget” hunting weapon, and most hunters did not place high demands on it - as long as it functioned reliably. And in this, the MP-153 completely justified itself.
And more demanding shooters, having certain skills, were able to “bring” the gun to the state they needed on their own. The ease of caring for the weapon was also rated well - a clear plus.
Sometimes the receiver was criticized - supposedly, despite the heavy weight, which should provide a significant margin of safety, its materials were not strong enough. And the decision to use the same box on all models was subsequently assessed as unsuccessful by the designers themselves.
History of the creation of MP 153
The MP-153 shotgun was developed and put into production at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant in 1999. The predecessor of the gun was the IZH-81 gun, which was a pump-action shotgun with a longitudinally sliding fore-end.
Initially, IZH-81 was developed for special forces, its production was carried out from 1993 to the 2000s. The shotgun was distinguished by its simplicity of design, reliability and was popular in the 90s.
On its basis, a sample of a self-loading gun was created, which received the designation MP-151. The main disadvantage of the MP-151 was the inability to use it with cartridges with a case length greater than 70 mm.
At that time, the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant had big plans to enter the American weapons market, so it was decided to develop and put into production a weapon model that could fire any type of cartridge, from 12/70 to 12/89. This is how the MP-153 gun appeared in 1999.
Similarities and differences between MP-153 and IZH-81
Although IZH-81 and MR-153 are similar in appearance, they have much more differences than similarities. Similar parameters of the two models are:
- The principle of locking the barrels on the two models is absolutely similar;
- The MP-153 under-barrel magazine is exactly the same as on the IZH-81 model;
- A folding stock is available on modifications of both models. The ability of the butt to fold is good for weapons that are used for security or self-defense, but for hunting it is better to choose the classic modification.
A much longer list will be obtained if you start listing the differences between the MP-153 and IZH-81:
- The IZH-153 receiver is significantly different from the IZH-81 receiver. Its length increased by 10 mm. At the same time, the width and height of the new receiver are smaller;
- The design of the rod that transmits movement from the piston to the bolt has been changed. As for the description of the new MP-153 thrust, it is a U-shaped part;
- The handguard on the MP-153 also took on a different shape. It became longer and thinner, which gave the MP-153 a certain elegance;
- The MP-153 shutter has become lighter, which has significantly simplified the operation of the automation. The MP-153 locking latch has also been lightened;
- The cartridge feeding mechanism has been changed. The new mechanism received one cartridge interceptor instead of two that were in the IZH-81 design;
- The design of the feed tray has also been changed.
In addition, many minor improvements were made to the design as a whole.

MP-153 smoothbore shotgun with Picatinny rails
MP-153 is a Russian self-loading smoothbore shotgun, popularly called “Murka”, which is used for various types of hunting, sport shooting, law enforcement and self-defense.
MP-153 shotguns use gas-operated automatics with an annular gas piston located around the magazine tube. The design of the gas outlet unit includes an automatic gas regulator (located around the magazine tube), which discharges excess powder gases into the atmosphere.
The barrel is locked by a swinging cylinder (wedge) located in the bolt and in the firing position entering a groove in the barrel shank; the bolt's engagement directly with the barrel ensures the strength and durability of the locking, as well as unloading the receiver at the moment of firing. The receiver of the gun is made of aluminum alloy, the fittings (forend, stock) are made of wood or plastic. The barrels are equipped with replaceable chokes.
The gun is equipped with an automatic bolt stop: after firing the last cartridge, the bolt stops in the rearmost position, which simplifies and speeds up subsequent reloading and signals the shooter that the ammunition has been used up.
The hammer-type trigger mechanism is made in the form of a detachable unit and is equipped with a safety system:
- from a shot when the bolt is not completely locked;
- non-automatic safety blocking the trigger.
Tubular under-barrel magazine with a capacity of 4 rounds. The magazine capacity can be increased by installing an extension up to 8 rounds.
Modifications
MP-153 shotguns are available in several different versions:
- with replaceable choke tubes for firing lead and steel shot.
- without an aiming bar, with a front sight, without interchangeable choke tubes.
- with various options for the butt and forend: made of walnut or beech, with a rubber shock absorber;
- made of plastic, with a rubber shock absorber;
- with folding stock and pistol grip.

Service
The IZH-43 (MR-43) shotgun, like any other, needs careful care, regular cleaning and lubrication, only then will it serve you for decades, delighting you with well-aimed shots and hunting trophies.
The basis of careful gun care is regular cleaning of the gun from powder deposits, residues of polyethylene wads and lead, as well as lubricating the gun with gun oil.
The gun must be cleaned no later than one day after firing the gun. To clean the gun, all you need is a cleaning rod, a clean rag and gun oil.
Before cleaning, you need to partially disassemble the gun, to do this, separate the forend, and then the barrels from the receiver. It is necessary to clean not only the inner surface of the barrels, but also all parts and mechanisms that are exposed to powder gases.
You need to store the IZH-43 (MR-43) gun in a safe; it is a prerequisite that the safe is in a dry room. When storing a gun for a long time, it is advisable to coat all metal parts of the gun with a thin layer of thick gun lubricant. When storing a gun, the triggers of the gun must be lowered so that the mainsprings of the gun do not sag.
Storage and care of the IZH-27 (MR-27) gun
The gun must be stored in a dry place, the gun must be stored in a disassembled state, and when storing the gun, the hammers must be released to avoid wear on the mainsprings.
All parts of the gun, during storage, should be lubricated with gun oil to prevent rust. If you are not going to use the gun for a long time, for example in the off-season, it is better to coat all metal parts of the gun with thick grease.
After each shooting, the gun must be thoroughly cleaned and lubricated. The bluing of barrels and chrome plating are not of high quality, and if you do not regularly clean and lubricate the gun, consequences in the form of rust and damage to the chrome plating will occur very soon.
If lead appears in the bores of the barrels, you need to remove it using a soft copper brush, or using special products for removing lead, which can be purchased at gun stores.
The appearance of a loose barrel may indicate that the clamping screw of the gun has become loose. To fix this problem, you need to unscrew two screws from the butt plate and tighten the clamping screw.
You cannot click the triggers of a gun empty, without cartridges in the barrels; this has a bad effect on the firing pins and their mounting sockets. If you want to pull triggers without cartridges in the barrels, for example, if you are training at home with a gun, insert spent cartridges into the barrels, or even better, buy special dummy cartridges at a gun store and train for your health, without any damage to the gun.
When opening the gun, do it smoothly without jerking or sudden movements, with both hands, in order to prevent the gun from wobbling. In order to extend the service life of your gun, do not shoot old cartridges with an unknown expiration date, and also do not shoot self-loading cartridges that have significantly exceeded the charge rate. Such cartridges can easily damage the barrel of a gun.
Other modifications
Even at the time when the Izhevsk plant was actively producing the MP-153 model, designers thought about creating a gun for 20x76 caliber on its basis. This idea was quickly forgotten, since in order to create such a gun with acceptable weight and dimensions, a fundamental modernization of the basic version would have to be carried out.
The prospect of creating a modification of the MP-155 model, the caliber of which would be equal to 20 mm, was stipulated in the technical specifications for the gun. Currently, work on debugging the 20x76 caliber gun is in its final stages. The weight of this modification will be 2.9 kg.
In addition, the MP-155 self-loading hunting rifle became the basis for the MP-135 pump-action shotgun. The main difference between the MP-135 model and the MP-133 was its unification with the gun in question. The weight of the pump-action model is about 2.9 kg in wooden version. The MP-135 model has the same varieties as the basic version. In addition, it has options with barrel lengths of 510 and 540 mm.
The MP-133 model was equipped with a bolt stop, that is, after the ammunition was used up, the bolt and forend were locked in the rear position. To unlock them, you had to press the interceptor button. Since some potential customers expressed a desire to purchase a pump-action shotgun without a bolt stop, such a version was also made for the MP-135 model.
Weapon Selection
This gun is a reliable weapon that has a long service life. Thus, athletes involved in practical shooting often have more than 30 thousand rounds of “Murok” guns. However, rarely do any hunters complain about problems with the MP-153: they take it out of the package and hunt a lot and successfully, without even thinking about fine-tuning the gun. In any case, in order to minimize the likelihood of purchasing a defective weapon, you need to pay close attention to the product you choose while still in the store. The main thing is that you shouldn’t be shy; you need to demand that the seller present all the copies in stock. They receive a salary for such inconveniences, and weapons, like a wife, must be chosen very carefully so as not to regret their choice for many years.
