Heckler-Koch triumph: why is the German HK416 rifle better than the American M16?

Semi-automatic carbine of modular design. Produced since 2007.

It has modifications with different barrel lengths (12, 16, 18... inches).

The magazines are designed specifically for this model and are made of transparent plastic. They can be 10 or 20 chargers.

The buttstock is telescopic, with fixed positions, and has a rigid fixation for accurate shooting.

The original design of the carbine, based on the M16 configuration, but with a short-stroke gas outlet (gas piston - a gas block of the original design that prevents sticking or clogging of the adjustment mechanism with soot), is very reliable.

a similar system is installed on the MP308, the photograph is shown to visualize the Gazpiston design.

The carbine has proven itself in all respects. Firing accuracy is at the level of bolt-on sniper carbines, reliability with high-quality cartridges is impeccable. Shot accuracy is ensured by a high-quality cold forged barrel, and even in the shortest version it produces less than 1MOA.

The carbine is equipped with a large number of Picatinny rails. The top rail, thanks to the powerful upper, is rigid and precise, it goes into the fore-end bar absolutely precisely, the consistency of the details of the entire carbine is respectable. General play is minimal, but this does not affect reliability. The only limitation is that you cannot use cartridges with bimetallic shells.

Weapons IMXO. Part 3: Review and tuning of H&K MRЗ08

HK MRZ08 The coalition army, bogged down in quasi-police operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, unexpectedly faced a situation where the standard 5.56 caliber became very scarce definitely neither in range nor in power. The collision distances have shifted to 400 - 600 meters. It was then, at the beginning of the new century, that the US Army and their allies began to massively purchase optical and collimator sights, such as ACOG and Aimpoint CompM2, which significantly increased o accuracy and range of shooting from standard weapons. However, even the presence of snipers often did not solve the problem of influencing the enemy, especially considering the significant difference in the tactical methods of using them compared to actions of motorized rifle units.

War, or rather the enemy, are the best teachers, and the lessons suggested the need for a new type of fighter - marksman, high-precision shooter at medium distances (or infantry sniper according to the concept of the BC CCCP model of the end 50s!). Their task was to increase the firing range of the squad, at distances exceeding the distance of the standard weapons of the unit's shooters. Unlike a sniper, a Marksman operates as part of a unit, moreover, there may be several such shooters in a platoon. The saturation of optics did not solve all the problems, and due to the lack of options, the military took old but powerful M14s from warehouses and, having modernized them to the level of the MZ9 EMR, threw them into battle. The Americans would not be Americans if they had not been able to quickly establish mass production of dozens of variants of Marxman weapons, DMR - semi-automatic, magazine rifle with an extended match barrel and variable optics. Now, let's look at the SVD - a rifle adopted for armament in the early 60s, according to that strategy of the CCCP army it was intended to increase the range of effective fire. rifle squad beyond the capabilities of standard AKs, up to distances of 700 meters….

Why not DMR? And this is in the middle of the 20th century... The US Army, apparently completely stunned by the terrible insurgents with AK and SVD, ordered large quantities of both assault rifles in Z08 caliber and DMR in x basis, and here the gloomy Teutonic genius woke up - Heckler und Koch ..., successfully landed SOCOM (US Special Operations Command) first HK416, then HK417, and of course DMR - HK G28. In 2012, the G28 high-precision rifle became the official weapon of the Bundeswehr infantry sniper. It is also worth noting that the weapon has been adopted for armament in many other countries, thanks to the fact that, according to the decision of the Federal Criminal Department, a rifle is not “military model”, which allowed XiK to trade it with all his might, including to military units according to a decentralized supply scheme.

HK416

So, in the wake of the success of the HK416, and also taking advantage of the military’s demand for an increase in caliber and the use of 7.62×51 in assault rifles, the Germans, without hesitation, proposed the HK4 17. The military liked it... It must be said that the initial delight of owning assault rifles in such a powerful caliber has subsided and units increasingly began to use 417 as DMR propellers ku, while it, naturally, did not reach this title, since it was created as an assault weapon. Despite the fact that “theoretically” the shortened HK417 in automatic mode is more reliable than the same 416 to clear the premises of smoked and intoxicated perfumes of various drugs , among the same Bundes a picture gradually emerged that there was a need for a high-precision rifle chambered for a rifle cartridge, equipped with an optical sight and allowing Conducting targeted fire at a significant range (from 300 to 800 m) is the first priority.

By that time, the civilian version of the HK417 - MRZ08 was in full swing on the civilian market, which pleased its owners with exceptional shooting accuracy thanks to the heavy forged match barrel unencumbered with chrome. Naturally, having listened to the requirements of the military in terms of accuracy and firing range, as well as reliability and indestructibility, even after a direct hit from a “nuclear baton”, the designers barked “Yavo eh,” we got down to business, namely, we improved the civilian MRZ08, primarily in terms of survivability and reliability of operation in unfavorable conditions. In particular, the aluminum receiver was replaced with a steel one. Due to these measures, the specific requirements of the military were met, such as ensuring the strength of weapons in abnormal conditions: for example, destruction of the op was not allowed snakes in the event of ejector failure, when the bullet of the next cartridge impinges on a cartridge that has not been removed from the chamber. Having been satisfied with the results, the rifle was presented to the military, where they looked at everything and, pleased with the accuracy, before leaving they demanded that the “black” barrel be chromed, because it was Deutschezold aten, like any other soldaten - hand-opened, accordingly, the barrel will ruin... After crying a little, the designers decided, that whoever pays gets to dance, they blocked the match barrel and, after selling the G28 to the Bundeswehr, they probably got drunk on schnapps from the premium ones….

SO WHAT IS THE G28?

“The length of the rifle with the butt fully extended is 1074 mm, weight without cartridges is 7.9 kg. Free-floating barrel 421 mm long, made by cold forging, chrome-plated to increase survivability. The telescopic stock can be extended by 110 mm and has five fixation points. For mounting sights and tactical accessories, use the STANAG 4694 NATO mounting rail, compatible with the MIL-STD-1913 standard bus. The new Schmidt&Bender PMII Z-20×50/DMR optical sight with a Mildot sighting reticle is used as the main sight for ranges up to 800 m. It is equipped with a backlight and a laser filter DIN-EN-207-L4. For ranges up to 600 m, use the Schmidt&Bender PMII 1-8×24/DMR sight with a similar device, but with an additional red dot collimator. Together with a special 7.62x51 DMR cartridge, the sights provide a dispersion of 1.5 minutes of arc (MOA), which corresponds to 45 mm at 100 m. Such accuracy is guaranteed for any rifle G28. It is also possible to use night optics, such as QIOPTIQ Merlin-LR or LZ-Insight CNVD-TZ. These sights are made in the form of attachments mounted in front of the daytime optics. Thanks to this, to install night devices, there is no need to remove the main sight and the shooter can use the usual reticle of the day sight at night. As a backup sighting device, there is an Aimpoint Micro T1 collimator sight on top of the optics, which is used if necessary at close ranges. Additionally, the rifle is equipped with the so-called laser light module Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics LLM-225, which combines the functions of a flashlight, laser laser and device for infrared target illumination for the target. number of points.

Since the rifle has a significant weight, H&K also offers a kit that allows you to convert the G28 into a shortened version, lighter by 1.6 kg, for use by patrols. Well, being an AK adherent, I always looked at CBD with respect. Then, for me there was no difference between a sniper and a Marksman, there was only an understanding that the AKM pierces the rail, and the SVD does this at a greater distance))) The acquisition of the HK MRZ08 was More spontaneously, I thoroughly enjoyed owning the HK MR22Z, and now Once I went out into the field, I shot from it for the first time at 500 meters. I must say that I really liked it, and since I had the idea of coming to a high point for a long time, I naturally decided to consider the options: semi-automatic or bolt. Having rightly decided that it was necessary to get to the bolt gradually, I decided to take PA. There weren’t that many options, and on my next visit to my friends in the store I asked them if they could bring the MRZ08 with a 20″ barrel? They brought it... It’s been almost three years since I’ve been the happy owner of a carbine, and the idea of purchasing it arose exactly at the moment when I read the article about the G28. I’ll say right away, besides the fact that absolutely everything, starting from the carbine itself, optics and other improvements, is expensive, cartridges, cartridges are also very expensive, especially since I love Norma Diamondline. One good thing is that their consumption compared to 223 is much less, but it’s still expensive. The maximum distances at which shooting from the HK MRZ08 was carried out was 1000 meters along a metal gong of 30 cm. I’m extremely pleased with the carbine, moreover, despite the generally accepted bad manners in using tactical rifles on a whim, the emerka went to the marmot, where the farthest effective height the shoot was at 470 meters, and three, and everything was on target... The results of the six-hour vodka genocide were recognized as a “virgin genocide”, which the owner of the peasant farm was happy about, which resulted in the subsequent six-hour vodka genocide...

Do you need a beast-caliber self-loading carbine?

PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK
Why do you need a beast-caliber self-loading carbine?

After all, many believe that the philosophy of hunting for large animals is based on the postulate “one shot - one hunted animal.”

Moreover, there are many hunters in the world who prefer kiplaufs for game hunting, which are very expensive in themselves, and even custom-made for a specific person, single-barreled breaks, taking into account anthropometric characteristics and taste preferences in external design.

The only kiplouf we produce is the IZH-18, which now exists in all calibers: from the veteran security officer 9x18 PM to the 30-06 SPR, an old soldier turned hunter. We don’t take him into account, he’s the only one in the world.

Philosophy is philosophy, and a self-loading carbine allows you to fire a quick second and, if necessary, a third shot when a fallen bear suddenly jumps up and begins to quickly leave or a wild boar on a driven hunt “asks for more.”

Read the material : “Kiplauf or carbine - a problem of choice”

Many people go hunting only occasionally, a couple of times a year, and therefore their hunting skills leave much to be desired. And a self-loading carbine is a reason to concentrate on hunting, not try to shoot, forgetting about the need to jerk the bolt.

The finishing of the weapon is at a very high level. PHOTO: MANUFACTURER

A reason to correct your own mistakes, not guessing with distance or with anticipation. Find a wounded animal on the spot within sight, and not search for days based on a barely visible blood trail.

But these are beastly calibers. The Merkel SR1 is available in a wide range of calibers: .223Rem, .270 Win, .308 Win, .30-06 Spr, 7×64, 8x57JS, 9.3×62, .300 WinMag, 7 RemMag. At least three of the listed line are produced in our country. Three more are more or less common and known, while the .270 Win and 7x64 are rare.

In other countries, NATO calibers are .223 Rem and .308 Win. are prohibited for civil circulation, but rare ones are common there. It turns out that the same model is in demand due only to the variety of calibers.

The carbine, although semi-automatic, remains a classic hunting rifle. PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK

The carbine is quite short and swings (1070 mm) - the longest in the .300 Win Mag caliber, shorter in others. Barrels in all calibers are 500/510mm, which, taking into account the use of modern gunpowders, is quite enough for their complete combustion.

And at the same time, they provide fairly high accuracy and easily portable, comfortable recoil. Weight, regardless of caliber, does not exceed 3.3 kg. The descent is distinct, with a short free stroke and a pronounced step.

There are four Merkel SR1 models: Standard, Basic, Basic Suppressor, Keiler Golg. Not all of them are represented in our country.

Read the material : “Hunting self-loading carbines TsKIB SOO”

Basic and Standard are easy to distinguish externally: Basic has a receiver with pronounced edges and flat surfaces, while Standard has a receiver with a characteristic round shape. Receiver color is matte black.

Options include a walnut forend and stock or more practical plastic. Carbines can be equipped with the usual front and rear sight pairs with red and green light-accumulating elements. Another option is the Battue bar. What kind of bar is this, what is it for, what are its features?

Such careful fitting of parts is not typical for semi-automatic machines. PHOTO: MANUFACTURER

Battue means "raid" in French. Accordingly, the rail was designed for simplicity and, most importantly, speed of short-range shooting, when there is no time to assemble the front and rear sights together.

Therefore, Battue is a combination of a rifle rail with a longitudinal slot with the usual rear sight. He raised it, aimed it, fired - with minimal skill it’s faster than looking for a red dot on the collimator glass and then catching a target with it.

The Basic Suppressor model does not have open sights, but has a 15x1 thread on the muzzle and is equipped with an original Merkel suppressor. And it has the minimum power caliber .308. The model is not presented in Russia.

The fiber optic front sight allows you to shoot equally comfortably both on a sunny day and at dusk. PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK

The Keiler Gold model takes its name from the boar whose image is engraved on the receiver and inlaid with gold. According to the manufacturer, this model is completely handmade. You are also unlikely to find this model on the Russian arms market, and its price will not be affordable for everyone.

It is impossible not to mention here that the Merkel company has been a supporter of manual production almost since its founding in 1898. Even despite today's technology, the company still remains true to tradition and produces weapons exclusively from high-quality metal, without the use of industrially produced parts.

Read the material : “Izhevsk rifled menagerie: bear and tiger”

However, this does not mean that the company completely rejects high production technologies and does not use all kinds of modern machines for processing wood or milling duralumin elements.

Also, high technologies are used at the modeling stage. Merkel manufactures all major components of its weapons. All key stages of production and ballistic testing of the weapon take place at the factory under strict control. Zeroing is carried out both with an open sight at 50 meters and with an optical sight at 100 m with cartridges from various manufacturers.

It must be this harmony of the tradition of artisan gunsmiths and modern technologies that allows the company to produce both multi-thousand serial production units (Merkel Engineered Manufacturing), appreciated all over the world, and custom-made weapons up to the one-of-a-kind so-called Meisterstück, which translates as masterpiece.

The weapons produced by Merkel, despite the wide range of models and modifications, are still “not for everyone.” This emphasized elitism attracts the attention of collectors all over the world. Indeed, despite dozens of available and fairly simple in design models, Merkel is more than a weapon, it is a work of art.

Although the SR1 is a mass-produced model, the company also has models that have left their mark on history, such as the Merkel shotgun, which was ordered by General Franco in 1937 and presented as a gift to Hermann Goering, and after the end of World War II was captured as trophy and given to Dwight Eisenhower, and subsequently sent as an exhibit to the National Rifle Association Museum in the small town of Fairfax, Virginia.

Sights can be front and rear sights or a Battue rail, the latter makes it easier to shoot offhand. PHOTO: MANUFACTURER

After World War II, the Merkel plant, located in Suhl in Thuringia, became part of the GDR industry and resumed production of hunting weapons only in 1952.

However, even after the reunification of Germany, the company could not return to production and sales of its products to the level it had after the First World War, when the company exported its weapons to at least 28 countries.

The situation was corrected only by the modernization of production with the subsequent sale of the company to the Emirati Caracal International.

There is also a version that before coming under the wing of Caracal International from the Emirates, in 2003 the Merkel company was sold to other Germans - Heckler & Koch, and the SR1 model owes its appearance to the developers of the HK SLB 2000.

But be that as it may, the Merkel SR1 was created for connoisseurs of German quality and reliability and for those who love beauty and luxury, even if not always accessible to everyone.
