Air rifle MP-515 Barracuda (wood, 4.5 mm, Baikal)

Description of pneumatic Baikal MP 515 Barracuda 4 5 mm

This air rifle was released for the civilian market, although in essence it is the same hunting air rifle MP 513m of 4.5 mm caliber, but only with a weaker coil spring installed, allowing it to produce a speed of about 170 m/s, so you can buy it without any licenses from 18 years old.

Although you can buy an MP 515 rifle without a license, many customers do not immediately understand why it costs more than the standard MP 512. If you delve into the essence of this issue in more detail, you can understand that the components and mechanisms of this model are made with greater power in mind , based on the MP 513M, which on its powerful spring produced as much as 25 J or 320 m/s .

Let's look at the main differences between the MP 515 Barracuda and the usual Murka:

  • Retractor-free cocking system with ratchet, i.e. if you partially cock the barrel, it will not bounce back, since a step-by-step mechanism is installed inside the stock, which allows you to more safely cock an air rifle, which will be very important with a reinforced spring. However, this method of cocking also has a disadvantage - additional noise, which is not very necessary for hunting, to put it mildly.
  • The safety is made in the form of a trigger, which must be manually cocked before each shot after charging the rifle, only then will the shot occur.
  • the barrel is made monolithic from a single piece of steel with a wall thickness of about 5-6 mm, which, of course, will have a positive effect on the survivability of the model in field conditions.

This list of differences reflected only external differences, because We prefer not to get into the design, but the quality of workmanship is immediately visible and it is much higher than that of the MP-512.

The stock in the MP 515 model is made from a single piece of wood, namely birch according to the Baikal plant. It is well processed and varnished to ensure durability during use.

Surprisingly, the rifle lies extremely comfortably in the hands, despite the fact that the grip is meant to be for the right hand, but it also fits well in the left hand.

The front and rear sights are used as sighting devices; they are adjustable and allow targeted shooting with a powerful spring at a distance of up to 80 m, but it is still better to shoot at such a significant distance with an optical sight installed. To install optics, there is an 11 mm Dovetail strip on the top of the MP 515; you can put rings on it, and on the rings, in turn, you can put any optics on it.

The barrel length in this model is 475 mm , which is sufficient when paired with a rifled barrel for targeted shooting from the MP 515 at a distance of up to 100 m; for comparison, the AK-12 has a barrel length of 425 mm. At the same time, the total length of 1090 mm provides a fairly comfortable hold in the hands with a not particularly large weight of 3.3 kg.

Attention. As of 01.07.21, amendments to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Articles 222 and 223) came into force regarding pneumatic weapons with muzzle energy over 7.5 J. If previously liability, and only administrative responsibility, was provided for carrying, transporting and shooting at borders of populated areas, then from now on criminal prosecution with quite serious sanctions is provided for the sale, as well as illegal production, alteration or repair of such samples (see No matter how tight the string is, or New “anti-pneumatic” laws). So, when reading articles written in a completely different era :)), keep in mind the newly discovered circumstances...

The appearance of the MP-515 "Barracuda" rifle in the production line of Izhevsk gunsmiths was quite predictable.

Almost fifteen years ago, IzhMech released a unique model, the MP-513M. This is a purely hunting weapon in 4.5 and 5.5 mm calibers, available exclusively under license (up to 25 joules). As usual, licensed pneumatics are practically not in demand in Russia. Still, these are examples of extremely limited use (see “List of guns...”), and the vast majority of normal hunters do not see the point in spending the same time and money on organizational measures as on the purchase and design of a classic firearm. Well, it is quite possible to poach with air rifles purchased in regular stores without licenses.

In general, the question on the agenda was how to promote this really good development to the broad masses of Russian airgunners. Without further ado, one single change was made to the design of the MP-513M - the powerful spring was replaced with a weaker one, and the “Barracuda” was born, delivering a legal 7.5 J. Actually, this is exactly how the German ones supplied to Russia are brought to legal requirements. Diana" and Turkish "Hatsans".

Just keep in mind that the free sale of even such weakened 5.5 mm rifles is prohibited in Russia, therefore, unlike its progenitor, the MP-515 is available to us only in 177 caliber/4.5 mm. By the way, just the other day, a Russian armory released a license-free (!) spring-piston 5.5-mm Maestro rifle (see “New models of air weapons”).

2022 addition.

MP-515S caliber, which does not have any restrictions at all . Here she is, a beauty, in the photo:

The price of the new product is 15,700 rubles, almost one and a half thousand cheaper than the standard version.

You can find an excellent technical overview of the MP-515 in “Useful Links”. We will limit ourselves to the purely user aspect. So, what exactly is this rifle, what is its scope of use and is it worth buying?

At its core, this is a typical budget “supermagnum”, something like a domestic version of the Turkish “Hatsan 135”, although in ideology it is much closer to the famous German “Diana-350”. The MP-515 has in common the central hook of the piston (and therefore the impossibility of installing a gas spring) and the mechanics of locking the barrel through a ball. The compressor is slightly different from the classic – 28x125 mm, instead of the standard 29x120 for “supers”. In principle, this is what it turns out to be: the maximum energy is about 29 J (like Diana), the speed of the bullet with the F-spring (weakened to 7.5 J) is 170 m/s, with the original one (from the MP-513M ) – about 300 m/s with “heavy” bullets.

Especially for people who are keen and sometimes even a little gullible: All pneumatic manufacturers achieve beautiful marketing figures for supermagnum speeds (380 m/s) by using a very light (less than 0.3 gram) projectile made of an unknown alloy, which is strictly prohibited from being fired from powerful pneumatics – it turns out to be almost an analogue of a destructive “blank” shot (see “Bullets for pneumatics”).

The weight of the Barracuda is only 3.3 kg, which is much less than that of the Hatsan 135 and even the Plas, with similar dimensions. This is facilitated by the widespread use of aviation alloy B95, including for the compressor. The barrel, which is very thin for such a rifle – 13 mm – also contributes. And it looks somehow undignified, and gives rise to some, albeit unfounded, doubts about reliability. True, the manufacturer promises to switch to 16 mm barrels.

By the way, about the manufacturer. By and large, “Barracuda”, although it is produced by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant (like the legendary “Murka” MP-512), the very idea and implementation of the project is rather the merit of what was created a quarter of a century ago. They are also engaged in the sale of various kinds of non-standard products of the plant, like the same “Barracuda” or greatly modified, in comparison with the serial ones, MR-512-44 and MR-512-45 “Moray eel” (pictured).

And the 512 series really has a lot to improve. Read more about it in the article “Spring-piston nostalgia“.

In addition, the Izhevsk Guns team can be credited with the appearance on the market under the Rusich brand of the famous MP-27 over-and-under and selectively assembled semi-automatic MP-155.

As for the Barracuda, here, too, increased attention to production quality is clearly not out of place, since its design is very different from the classic MP-512, including in the direction of complexity. Unlike most spring-air rifles, there is a real hammer-type firing mechanism. This was done to unload it and significantly reduce the force on the trigger, which now does not depend on the force of the mainspring. And in general there are a lot of differences, including assembly and disassembly. Well, in general, all these technical details can be found in the above-mentioned review. Another feature of the model is the impossibility of installing “gas springs” due to the central hook of the piston (like the Diana-350) .

In general, the rifle looks sturdy, “iron”, especially considering the fact that Izhevsk metal is much more serious than, say, “Khatsan” metal. The design, although complex, is very well thought out. The feeling of the shot itself and the accuracy indicators, according to reviews from a few users so far, are comparable to the Diana-350, which in itself is a very serious result. A birch stock, of course, does not look as solid as one made from more valuable types of wood, but it does not cast doubt on its usability. Which also significantly affects shooting accuracy. By the way, there are also versions in a walnut stock (pictured).

The price of such rifles, of course, is much higher, but in modern times it does not even reach the “Hatsan mod 135”. And this is really pleasing. Import substitution, however...

According to some information, Izhevsk Guns LLC is beginning or has already begun assembling the MP-515 on its premises in order to quickly make changes to the design, in particular, replacing some factory components with more advanced ones from other manufacturers. This applies to both the not-so-successful mainsprings, weakened to comply with legal requirements (not reinforced - from the MP-513M), and unsightly open sights. The steel rail for the optical sight (pictured) is also distinguished by its traditional military quality.

However, as you can see, there is neither a stopper nor even a hole for it, which is highly desirable for rifles of such potential power. Again, according to some reports, it is planned to replace it with a modern Weaver rail.

The scope of application of the MP-515, in my opinion, is not much different from that of its progenitor. That is, this is, first of all, hunting - in countries where it is allowed with any unlicensed pneumatic gun (and with a reinforced spring, of course). Well, amateur sports, including the so-called. “plinking”, that is, shooting not at targets, but at empty beer cans, pieces of refined sugar and other funny objects. In principle, a standard 7.5 joule mainspring is quite sufficient for these purposes. In addition, through some manipulations on this particular rifle, you can adjust the working stroke of the piston and achieve a completely reasonable energy-accuracy ratio.

Of course, we can hardly talk about professional high-precision shooting, as is the case with most “supermagnums”, and indeed mass-produced rifles in general. This is the prerogative of weapons of a much higher level and a completely different price category. For the “initial shooting training” implied in the certification documents, the “Barracuda” is also not very suitable - despite its light weight, it is too large for children and teenagers; the usual “Murka” MP-512 or the MP-60/61 line is quite enough.

But in general, the MP-515 “Barracuda” is a very worthy alternative to both expensive German “supermagnums” and relatively cheap “Hatsans”.

Current insert! Finally, an image of the first and only Russian supermagnum MP-515 in an updated version has appeared on the website of Izhevsk Guns LLC (pictured). Until now, potential buyers, despite the very interesting design and good performance characteristics, were clearly put off by the boring appearance of the product.

PS Quite recently, Izhevsk Guns brought to the market a new model that fills the gap between the rather weak MP-512-44 and MP-515 - the magnum class rifle IR-615 "Katran".

2022 addition. And now the Izhevsk people have released two more new items to the mountain - the IR-614 and IR-615 rifles, the first is, in principle, a kind of analogue of the MP-512, that is, weaker than the Katran, the second (pictured) - on the contrary, is noticeably more powerful than it, in terms of its characteristics corresponding to the famous “black series” of the Spanish Gamo or the new Crossman line “NP Elite“.

In addition, Izhevsk Guns certified their next new product - their first PCP rifle IR-715 Afalina:

Attention: if handled carelessly, even a 4.5 mm air rifle can pose a threat to the life and health of others (for details, see the article “Bow, crossbow, pneumatics: fakes, injuries, crime...”). Be careful.

ATTENTION! This first paragraph in my topic was added three years later (December 2008). During this time, I became a sophisticated and knowledgeable person in pneumatics, not like then... . I would now rewrite many points and streamline the topic, but most likely I won’t find time for this... Therefore, now there are only a few main points: 1. For its price, it’s a completely normal rifle. The rifle worked for me for its 100 bucks, more pleasing than disappointing, IMHO. Whenever you have the opportunity, buy the MP 513 in 5.5 caliber. It has more than enough power for heavy bullets. 2. I repeat, do not take up the power of the rifle, no APs are needed in this sense. There was an idea to generally “adjust” the spring, keeping it charged for 6-8 hours, so that it would shoot more accurately. 3. 50 meters for her - I think that’s already a lot: https://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/96/126453-9.html. But it’s quite possible that I just switched to PCP too quickly... 4. Install only the appropriate sight (I was quite happy with the VOMZ 4x32 - cheap and reliable), and only on a monoblock... No rings!!! The rifle kicks violently. I stood there - no complaints: https://airgun.org.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5361 5. No bipods at IFR! (excluding Diana-54). 6. The best bullets - Barracuda Match 10.6g. (https://airgun.org.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6189). You can also use CP 10.5g. Others are not needed: https://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/3/127097.html You can safely take 4.51, or better yet 4.52. 7. Install the mod that is not integrated and not heavy. I didn’t like the inertia with which the barrel with a heavy mod at the end slammed shut, so I started closing the rifle by raising the stock, not the barrel (also an option). the mod was like this: https://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/25/143038.html. 8. I disassembled the Vitalik rifle (gnom), not mine, I note: https://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/96/258498.html. Mine has remained So far Never Disassembled. 9. The chamfer must be made. Subjectvino - began to hit more accurately: https://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/24/162696.html
That's all for now. My Murka is not a competitor to my Matador, therefore it is lubricated, preserved and sold (officially, under license: https://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/25/223632.html)

The appearance of the rifle, unlike the following photos) became like this (only the mod, the monoblock and the sight have already been sold, the swivels, I won’t unscrew it...):

Interesting articles about what you need: https://www.airguns.ru/articles.phtml, but here’s everything, the main thing is to know what you want: https://pnevma.boom.ru/index.htm

Below is information from December 2005 onwards:

I decided to create a separate topic dedicated to the MP 513M rifle, because although there is a lot of information about it, it is not systematized and scattered, often outdated (according to the 2001-2002 model), and the screw cutter, in general, is promising. I purchased it in November 2005, under license. It’s clear that it’s not in Moscow, even though I live there (twice as expensive as in the region). I bought it because, firstly, it’s my first rifle (not counting the smoothbore and practical professional activities (champion in the team competition in shooting from a 9mm pistol. Secondly, it’s ours, domestic (not so expensive, as they say - ' not pathetic'), thirdly, it is quite serious in terms of power (there is, by and large, no need to bother with 'overclocking' and upgrading). I had my doubts for a long time because of the fractured barrel, I wanted a fixed one, for accuracy and a guaranteed absence of backlash (side- or underlevel), then I read that Diana’s manufacturers will prefer the “break” in the designs of their new powerful rifles, supposedly more reliable than the relatively thin levers of the side and under-barrel cocking, there are no additional mechanisms, they say, the simpler the better. The first impression is good - butted (tinted birch), not very heavy.Compared to the Gamo CF-X (used at the time of purchase), according to this criterion, the 513 is clearly superior (original stock, Russian .

When purchasing, I checked it with a shot on the street (fortunately the store is not in Moscow) into a tree (a wide, hard knot had been sawed off; I barely scratched it with a key). The bullet entered 1.5 cm from 15 meters. The sound of a shot (or maybe the slap of a bullet on a hard twig?!), like from a small gun, and smoke from the barrel, diesel, respectively. As you know, the barrel is externally directed slightly downward, taking into account the wear of the metal in the future. So far I have fired 15 shots (scraped 10 meters diagonally across the room + corridor), sitting with emphasis on the back of a chair. He shot lead balls as the heaviest bullets. They were inserted tightly, but, to be honest, I couldn’t see any traces of the rifling; the balls were too deformed after the shots. It turned out to be a pile, see photo. I didn’t use optics - it’s a pity, the screw cutter in my hands really shakes a lot with a very noticeable recoil, I’ll ruin my VOMZ in a moment (I’ll save it for the small one, fortunately there are six months left. I hung it up for an estimate, then took it off. IS THIS REALLY THE VOMZ EMBLEM? Otherwise I got it without instructions, and something is illegible

I tried with expansive hunting bullets, with a hemispherical head and a funnel in it, so that it would open when hit, that is (see photo). For some reason, deeper into the 7cm thick volume of Lenin’s works was a bullet, not a ball. A little more than half was broken (taking into account the thick 4mm hardcover). There’s no way I’m going out of town to calmly shoot. Then I’ll definitely tell you.

I see that knowledgeable people communicate here (I surfed the forum for a couple of months before writing anything), and therefore I want to ask your current advice and opinion on some points on “fine-tuning” the specified screw cutter: 1. I plan to assemble the rifle bull-up stock. The experts said that, in principle, it is possible, despite the significant effort during cocking (15-17 kg). The advantages of carrying, transportation, and external impression are obvious. And the butt plate is a bit hard, like something like ebonite. Plus there will be a spare (I read a lot of horror stories about bursting stocks, it seems to be true, I wrote about shudders when firing). I honestly don’t know how the bull-up option will affect accuracy and shooting in general. It should look something like this: (photo borrowed from the site https://www.orugeynik.ru/): By the way, HOW RELIABLE IS THE INFORMATION ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF BENDING A FRACTURAL BARREL OVER TIME during operation (cocking)?

2. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE USE OF A BID ON A FRACTURED TRUNK? They probably ring and hang out. And you can’t shoot while standing; balance is a problem. And the price is “appropriate” - the simplest table-top ones are 1650 rubles, the same as half a rifle (and this is in the region!?). If anyone has practiced this kind of thing, please tell me and advise whether it’s worth doing. 3. As far as I got the idea, a muzzle on the 513 is a necessary thing, especially since there are threads on the barrel. The rifle will wobble less when fired, and it will look more impressive (like the Gamo 1250). Can a muzzle ibn weighting agent be at the same time the so-called sound moderator? (since I already mentioned the sound of the shot of the screw cutter in question). And how to select its weight for this model? Or maybe someone already has one? I would be grateful for the information. I read about the 'musket' bell at the end, but I still didn't understand its purpose; along the way, it was something from physics. I'm not going to saw it off. And I guess I was lucky with the chamfer. I checked it with a cotton swab - no burrs, piles from the cutter or thread. True, there is no chock either . The rifling comes out of the barrel at the same time, I looked at it with a magnifying glass. True, the surface of the bell is as if a mechanic stopped while boring a glass... By the way, the plastic nut at the end of the barrel is made in such a way that the air, rapidly flowing out when firing a bullet behind (or in front of it?) from the barrel along the bell, hits the curved edges this very nut, which is hollow inside, and, accordingly, dissipates to some extent. Mini-glushak? 4. Previously, I had a chance to shoot from a small rifle with a diopter sight. Quite! I want to try to install it on the 513th. After all, collimators, like optics, don’t last long on PPPs either?, especially on powerful ones: So I would be very grateful for information about the types and locations of diopters. That's all for now, if anything happens, don't blame me, it's the first material. Thanks in advance for your responses and advice. I will certainly share my observations and results.
