Air pistol Ataman M1: strengthening with an upgrade, characteristics, repair, disassembly, video

Ataman M1 is an air pistol with impressive capabilities and performance. The market is replete with models that are analogues of firearms, but Ataman’s lack of prototypes almost undermines his dignity.

The online store rezon.by has prepared for website buyers and resource visitors a test review of the M1 air pistol, as a result of which it was possible to establish the initial flight speed of the weapon’s bullet, determine the service life and draw certain conclusions on operation.

The procedure for self-disassembling a pneumatic pistol model “ATAMAN-M1” to replace the combat valve gasket.

Before starting work, you must remove the magazine, completely bleed off any unspent gas (see paragraph 5.5 in the product data sheet) and set the safety to the firing mode.

1. Carefully knock out and remove the pin with a diameter of 3 mm (in the passport for the pistol, part 1.14), connecting the handle to the pneumatic block body

2. Disconnect the pneumatic block body from the handle

3. Press the barrel stop (detail 2.8) and fix the barrel

4. Unscrew the plug screw from the pneumatic block body (part 2.9)

5. Carefully remove in sequence: the combat valve spring (part 2.16) and the combat valve (part 2.7) from the pneumatic block body

6. Carefully (without damaging the walls) remove the combat valve gasket (part 2.11) from the cavity of the pneumatic block body with a hook or other suitable tool.

7. From the rem we sent. kit, get a new gasket for the combat valve and put it on the valve.

8. Place this assembly and the combat valve spring into the pneumatic block body

9. Tighten the cover screw.

10. Install the pneumatic block housing onto the handle.

11. Install a pin with a diameter of 3 mm (part 1.14) and carefully drive it into the handle.

Where is the Ataman-M1 air pistol used?

As stated in the technical data sheet, this model is recommended for training and target practice. Hardball players also managed to appreciate it. And fans of plinking (recreational shooting at bottles and cans) will be happy to use this pistol. But it is not suitable for self-defense - it is too light.

Created by the designer of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, the Yarygin air pistol was the result of developments to improve the Makarov pistol. Design and diagram of the pistol, video review and characteristics. A brief review of the Gamo Killer Blowback air pistol at this link. Characteristics, features and video review of the pistol.

Main characteristics

The body of the pistol is made of durable black plastic, and all internal parts are metal. Without cans, the device weighs only 0.48 kg, and when fully equipped it weighs 0.56 kg. Thanks to the long, smooth barrel (17.8 cm), good shooting accuracy is achieved. There is an open rear sight and front sight. The Weaver rail allows you to install a laser target or a flashlight under the barrel.

The cylindrical detachable magazine has 8 compartments holding 15 bullets each. Total - 120 copper-plated steel balls of the appropriate caliber. The shot is fired after the barrel rolls onto the valve. This moving barrel system gives the charge good speed. The manufacturer claims 125-130 meters per second, but in practice it is higher (130-147 meters per second). Two cans are enough for 120 shots, and refilling with compressed air is enough for 35 shots. Muzzle energy is within acceptable limits - up to 3 joules.

Video review of the Ataman-M1 air pistol:

The trigger, which operates only in self-cocking mode, is distinguished by a light and soft trigger that works evenly. The fuse is non-automatic. The Ataman-M1 pistol can be purchased both on the manufacturer’s website and in one of the online stores. It costs from 3150 rubles.

Features of Ataman

This device is unique in the world of pneumatics, combining PCP and CO2 types. Above the gun barrel there is a capacious steel tank with a volume of 60 cubic centimeters, which can be filled with any safe gas. The easiest way is to insert two standard twelve-gram CO2 cartridges - their contents are enough to shoot a full magazine. In addition, it is possible to refill using a fire extinguisher, compressed air cylinder, compressor or pump.

Another specific feature: the charging system for the cans is designed in such a way that there are no gaskets in the places where they are attached. No gaskets - no wear and no need to replace them.

Thanks to this, the gun does not release gas when loaded. According to the manufacturer, it can be stored charged for up to six months.

What is included

The cardboard box with camouflage design contains the pistol itself, as well as:

  • Technical certificate;
  • double-sided nut for puncturing cylinders;
  • sealing ring type KU 016-019-19;
  • bonus – device for threaded cartridges “Hunter’s Signal”.

Note that two modifications of Ataman-M1 are currently being produced, the difference in price between them is about 500 rubles. The cheaper option does not have fittings for alternative refilling and allows the use of only gas cans. The version with fittings can be distinguished by the inscription on the box: Ataman-M1U. In this case, we have two more parts included:

Disassembling and assembling the pistol

Raise the fuse. To remove the air block from the pistol frame, you need to knock out the pin and apply a little force (this is perhaps the most difficult moment). Next, we disassemble this block, for which we unscrew the barrel, holding the weighting agent in a vice. The spring and other parts along with the barrel will simply fall out. The main thing here is not to lose anything.

We use pliers to pull out the metal plate directed towards the handle. In this case, we act perpendicular to the axis of the pneumatic block. If the valve cannot be removed, then you need to pull the plastic sleeve towards the muzzle (it receives the balls). We do not unscrew the self-tapping screw at the back of the pneumatic block. Then we disassemble the valve - there should be no difficulties with this. Assembly is in reverse order. After several disassemblies, the parts are ground in, and this will become quite simple.

The video shows the disassembly and modification of the Ataman-M1 pistol:

Important: when assembling the valve, pay special attention to the placement of the rubber seal that seals the front part of the valve. It is located in front of the plastic sleeve.

Scheme of operation of the Ataman pistol

The gun is simple and easy to use. Now we will make sure of this. Before you start shooting, you need to raise the safety. When you press the trigger, the sear presses on the weighting material and the spring is compressed. It moves the barrel, as a result of which it captures the ball located in the receiving sleeve, cutting it off from the rest of the charge.

And only when the barrel is put on the rod tube, the valve opens. Thus, gas leakage is absolutely excluded. The barrel is removed from the sear. The spring hits the valve, which releases a portion of gas, which accelerates the metal ball.

Tips for repairs and upgrades

After firing several thousand shots or more, accuracy may decrease. This defect occurs because the plastic wears out and the gap between the gun body and the barrel becomes too large. The “fix” is simple: you need to take a fifteen-ruble plug for the RG6 cable. It comes with a crimping cylinder.

We cut this cylinder with scissors, spread it a little larger than the trunk and straighten the edges bent inward. Using a round file, lightly grind the inside of the cylinder (so that the speed of the shot does not drop). Then we put our product on the barrel with the cut up. After this, not only accuracy increases, but also the service life of the pistol.

As for the upgrade: to increase power, owners install stiffer springs, bore the valve and expansion chamber. And one more thing: the owners of those models that are not equipped with fittings have come up with a way to do without them. To do this, you need to drill a hole in the center of the plug into which the valve from the car wheel is inserted.

Pros and cons of this model

Air pistol Ataman-M1, magazine and bullets

Reviews about the pistol are mostly positive. Owners note the following advantages of Ataman-M1:

  1. Good accuracy, lightness;
  2. Soft trigger and self-cocking;
  3. Large magazine capacity;
  4. Possibility of refueling in several ways;
  5. A type of seal that allows you to keep gas in the tank for a long time.
  1. If you pierce the cans with an insufficiently sharp movement, then one of them may remain intact. Therefore, you need to have a hard surface on hand to pierce them.
  2. You cannot use refillable cans - the design does not allow this.
  3. When refilling the magazine compartment, you must keep the slider down at all times, otherwise the balls will fly apart.
  4. The gun is quite capricious regarding the quality of the balls, which can cause the mechanism to jam. Therefore, you need to use only high-quality charges.

Air pistols under the Ataman brand are serious and dangerous weapons

There are four models of the Ataman pistol, produced in Tula by A+A LLC:

  • Ataman with an integral magazine, 2004;
  • Model M with detachable magazine 2006;
  • M-1 2014;
  • M-2 2022.

All pistols have the same gas supply design, which consists of a large cylindrical cylinder located above the barrel of the weapon. The cylinder can be pre-inflated with air or it can be filled with two standard carbon dioxide canisters.

The Ataman pistol with a detachable magazine has a charge of 133 bullets. Ataman-M with a removable magazine has a clip of 60 balls. These two pistols have already been discontinued. They have an interesting feature: the pistols do not have self-cocking. To fire, you need to press the trigger twice. The first time there is a platoon, and the second time there is a shot itself. In versions M1 and M2 this issue has been corrected.

Ataman-M1 has a magazine for 120 bullets. All these pistols are smoothbore. Steel balls are used for shooting. The Ataman-M2 has a rifled barrel and a clip capacity of 10 bullets. It fires round lead bullets.

In 2016, Demyan LLC began production of its Ataman AR16 air pistol, which is similar in design to the rifle of the same name from the same manufacturer. This is a purely sporting serious pistol with an ergonomic handle, designed for professional athletes.

Pneumatics with pre-inflation using a gear circuit. The cylinder charge is enough to fire 20-120 shots. There are two possible calibers 4.5mm and 5.5mm. Muzzle energy 3 J, 7.5 J, 14 J and 20 J for 5.5 mm caliber. There are six types of pistols in total. Without a license, you can purchase two models with a caliber of 4.5 mm with a muzzle energy of 3 J and 7.5 J.

The pistol fires lead aerodynamic bullets, which are housed in a six-round drum. The price of a pistol in the basic configuration is 50 thousand rubles, and in the professional configuration it reaches 65 thousand rubles.

Functional

Now let's move on to the most interesting part. Let's find out how this pistol differs from its other relatives, and try to find out what kind of grass the designers smoked.

Moving barrel

Let's start with the less surprising things. The principle of operation is a moving barrel with an impact on the valve. This is used in Anix and many other foreign barrels, hence the increased power.

USM

And now for something more interesting. To fire, you need to pull the trigger twice. The first is for platooning, the second is for shooting. A double-action trigger mechanism, an external hammer, a moving bolt and blowbacks are not provided here, so such manipulations are necessary. In total, the first press puts in effort, and the second provides us with a well-aimed shot without moving the barrel.

The owners write that this is quite enough for shooting, but for hard games, I think it takes a long time to get used to and get used to it. Again, the manufacturer promised to release a version with a double-action trigger, maybe it was already on the shelves (already released, read at the end).

Trunk

It’s worth saying about the barrel that the first versions were produced in a rifled version, but currently they are smooth. By the way, the barrel is still 4.5 mm; for some reason the inventors did not risk encroaching on the standards. This miracle shoots exclusively with selected steel and is biased towards lead.

Fuse

It seems that with the proposed method of cocking and firing, the safety was not needed at all. But the standards oblige the pistol to have it. That is why the designers in the first version made... an ordinary screw that interferes with the movement of the trigger))) And I warned you that interesting things were yet to come.

The fuse is a screw on the bracket - there is a risk of losing it

As for me, this is quite an interesting domestic solution. But under the influence of criticism from somewhere, the plant later equipped the Ataman-M air pistol with a standard fuse on the RIGHT panel. As a result, it’s difficult to shoot, and you can’t reach the safety with one hand. A small message to the readers, I am not criticizing the gun, I really like it for its originality.

New fuse - in place of the thumb

Where's the trunk?

The originality of the barrel simply goes through the roof. So, the functional nodes:

The magazine (more about it later) is non-standard, but in its position, the trigger has already been worked on (read above), so they also decided not to touch it externally. There is a Picatinny rail for all sorts of laser lasers and flashlights (more on that later). In place of the shutter there is a long reservoir (you will understand a little later how and why). In place of the standard barrel there is a twist valve with an 8 mm outer hole diameter, a kind of combat barrel.

Where does the bullet come from?! The real barrel is located in the place of the guide for the return spring - below the twist. For some reason they weren’t particularly surprised here. Our Junker-1 already had a similar solution, where the “Cornet” was used as the base, and the barrel was a ramrod.

Junker-1 device - a long thin false floor is a barrel

By the appearance of the pistol you can determine some of its conditions. So in the cocked position the barrel extends beyond the body.

The barrel sticks out in the cocked position

Also, depending on the gas pressure, the level of valve protrusion changes.

Valve position depending on pressure

Bringing the gun to life

Now let’s try to figure out how the concepts of CO2 and PCP pneumatics coexist in one housing. To equip the cylinder with two CO2 cartridges, you need to unscrew the charging valve. A large hole appears in its place:

This is where the cylinders go

Two cylinders and a needle are pushed into this hole in a special order:

  • cylinder back to back
  • double ended needle
  • cylinder back to the entrance

Above is the correct order of cylinders in the “gate”

Next, the valve is screwed in until it stops, and piercing occurs by pressing the protruding part of the “barrel” against something hard and useless. As a result, the valve cover, under the influence of the pressure formed inside, will begin to bulge tightly, thereby ensuring the tightness of the tank (there is an O-ring on the same cover). By the way, the second cylinder may already be used up and be used purely to puncture the first one. For those who find it difficult to do this in words, it is recommended that you watch the video at the end.

It is clear that the volume of the tank will be greatly reduced due to two cylinders, so someone will want to push clean gas inside. To do this, use a special adapter (which comes included) for external filling systems, for example, OU-3 and OU-5 fire extinguishers.

Fire extinguisher attachment

Unscrewing the charging valve with pressurized cylinders can be problematic. To do this, you need to release the pressure by pressing on the barrel, or by pressing on a special screw inside the valve.

Shop

And this is something from the “Hello UFO” category. As was written at the very beginning, there are versions with a fixed magazine, and with a removable one. Whatever it is, the essence is the same - it is organized according to the principle of a round rod, in which there are several rows of standard stores. By rotating the rod around its axis, we feed the magazine we need into the barrel.

Fixed rotating magazine

The non-removable version holds 133 balls - 9 rows of 15 bullets each (one has less). Detachable magazines have either 8 rows of 15 bullets, or 4 rows of 15 bullets. In any case, the equipment of such a store can be a test of the brain, because... bullets constantly want to fly out, and technologists have not yet come up with safety latches. It’s better to become familiar with the equipment of a specific type of store in practice; I don’t see much point in it here, because the brain is probably already impressed by everything it hears. But that's not all!

Detachable magazine

LCC

We have already noted the presence of a strap for attaching a laser target and a tactical flashlight. But Ataman went even further. There was a version of the laser pointer, which was screwed into the charging valve - in a visual location of the barrel. And this entire unit was disguised as a muffler. Here is an original solution for a false silencer.

LCC-false silencer

Barrel grenade launcher

In one of the configurations, the pistol comes with several attachments for firing at the percussion igniter primer - signal and gas cartridges. Hardball players at this moment begin to activate their brains...

History of weapons at A+A LLC

The Ataman air pistol was invented by Alenin, Akimushkin and Bulavintsev. The patent application was filed on December 17, 2001. The patent was published on July 27, 2003 under RF number 2209384. Production of the Ataman model began in 2004.

The shooters noted that loading the magazine was very difficult. Therefore, in 2006, Ataman M was released, which had a removable magazine. The pistol was equipped with two magazines of 60 rounds each. The following user reviews concerned the strange double trigger device in the M1 product.

This flaw was corrected in 2014. The pistol received self-cocking and an increased magazine capacity of 120 bullets. After the release of M1, production of Ataman and Ataman M was discontinued. Ataman M2 appeared in 2022, as a response to the release of Ataman AR16. This pistol is distinguished from previous models by a rifled barrel and a ten-round magazine with lead bullets. The characteristics of the two Atamans M2 and AR16 are very similar, as is their design. The AP16 is distinguished externally by the location of the gas cylinder below the barrel.

Design

Now let's touch on such an interesting topic as the design of the Ataman pistol. Since the engineers of the Tula arms factory initially set themselves the goal of developing weapons with the latest systems and mechanisms, there is something to talk about in this regard. Here are just the most interesting design features that distinguish the “Ataman” model from its competitors:

  1. Barrel with moving mechanism. Today, such a design is unlikely to surprise anyone, but in 2004 it was encountered quite often (mainly in Animax). As the barrel hits the valve, it greatly increases the muzzle energy output and also gives the shooter the feeling of using a combat pistol.
  2. Trigger trigger with double pull of the trigger. Yes, you heard right. To fire a shot, you have to press the trigger twice. The first is for platooning, the second is for shooting. This system may seem too complicated for some, but it definitely adds authenticity to the model.
  3. Rifled barrel. It is worth noting that this feature is typical only for those models that were released before 2012. After this, the manufacturer decided to replace the part with a smoothbore one, which made it possible to slightly increase the firing speed and also extend the life of the pistol.
  4. Fuse. It would seem that if there is a cocking mechanism, such a system is not needed at all, but the Ataman members believe that safety comes first. The safety is located directly under the trigger, so it is quite convenient to press it. Thanks to this system, even a teenager can be trusted with a pistol.
  5. Double barrel. Well, here we come to the most interesting part. In the place where a bullet usually flies out of a pistol, there is not a muzzle, but a hole for pumping up a gas tank. The real trunk is located slightly lower and is not noticeable at first glance. Also under the muzzle there is a Picatinny rail, intended for attaching an under-barrel body kit.

And these are just the main design features of the “Ataman”, which simply cannot be ignored. It is thanks to all of the above systems that the pistol gained wide popularity immediately after its release and continues to be in demand to this day. True, in the modern modification of “Ataman-M1” some features had to be abandoned, but today we are talking about the old model.

Damaging effect of a bullet (background information)

There is a forensic review of the damaging effects of a bullet depending on the muzzle energy.

  • 0.06 - 0.08 J per mm. sq. causes abrasions and bruises;
  • 0.14 - 0.17 J per mm. sq. causes superficial wounds;
  • 0.32 - 0.36 J per mm. sq. delivers non-penetrating wounds;
  • 0.54 - 0.6 J per mm. sq. causes penetrating injuries.

Through simple calculations, one can understand why the legislator requires limiting the muzzle energy of pneumatic weapons to 7.5 J. With an acceptable caliber of 4.5 mm, this is the maximum value that does not lead to penetrating injuries. At this energy, a bullet of this caliber will create an impact of slightly less than 0.5 J per square meter. mm.

It also becomes clear why samples with muzzle energy less than 3 J do not belong to air guns at all. The bullet creates an impact of 0.2 J per square meter. mm., which can only lead to superficial injury.

Lethal effect of the M1 model

As for the Ataman pistol, calculations tell us that its declared muzzle energy is 2.5 J. The magnitude of the damaging effect is 0.16 J per mm. sq., which corresponds to a superficial wound. This fact provides certain advantages to pistol owners.

In Russia there is liability for violating the rules of carrying weapons. Regarding air guns, sporting pistols and rifles, they are prohibited from being carried in a condition suitable for shooting. This means they must be unloaded and in the bag. You cannot carry them in a holster. You cannot have a connected cylinder and bullets in the magazine.

This does not apply to Ataman; he can be carried in a holster, with balls in the clip and with filled cylinders.

The second big plus concerns shooting outdoors. Since July 2, 2013, administrative article 20.13 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation on shooting on the street has been in force in Russia. Many people who shot at banks in vacant lots or fought off stray dogs became victims of this article. The penalty is from 40 to 50 thousand rubles with confiscation of weapons.

They invented it, supposedly against characters who like to shoot everywhere on the streets, and, as always, normal people suffer. Offenders continue to shoot where they want and how they want.

The chieftain is not considered a weapon, and you can shoot from it in a vacant lot or in a park. You shouldn't abuse this. Shooting in crowded places can be regarded as hooliganism - disdain for social norms using weapons. Just as in all cases of crimes committed with weapons, it does not matter whether the weapon was a military weapon or whether it was a lighter.

Model M2

The Ataman M2 pistol has completely different ballistic characteristics than the first model. Working pressure increased from 9 atm. up to 21 atm. The bullet speed reaches 250 m/s. The main thing is the use of lead ammunition, which weighs 0.5 grams. Thus, the muzzle energy of the weapon is about 15 joules. This is prohibited by law, but the manufacturer provides a certificate indicating that the pistol has a muzzle energy of less than 3 J. Thus, the owner of the weapon is relieved of responsibility for violating the law, but provided that he did not make any changes to the design.

The magnitude of the bullet impact is 0.6 J per square meter. mm, which is enough to cause penetrating wounds. This power corresponds to the power of magnum spring air rifles. This is exactly the energy that MP 512 M, the legendary Murka, has. During duck hunting, bullets pierce the bird from the sternum to the tail. When shooting at a pork carcass, the bullets pierce the skin and go deeper by 10-15 cm until they hit the bones.

Perhaps the recent searches in . The weapon turned out to be formidable, moreover, suitable for constant wear and not subject to prohibitive laws.

Perhaps the most budget PCP pistol is a station wagon

The Ataman M2 pistol, developed by A+A, combines all the versatility of an air gun. Of course, the design has its drawbacks, its pros and cons. The cost of M2 is 11900, if the order is made directly from the company. In online stores, of course, the price will be higher.

Many may consider its plastic body a disadvantage, but I rather see it as a plus, minimum maintenance, lighter weight compared to metal.

The power supply of the pistol and why it is “universal”. In Ataman M2, the energy source can be CO2, or compressed air, at the owner’s choice. CO2 can be refilled in two ways: two regular 12g. CO2 cans or refill from a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher. Refilling with compressed air is carried out by a high pressure pump, compressor or cylinder, in general, everything that is used to refill PCP pneumatics.

Sights are adjustable rear sight. It is possible to install a strap on a pistol to mount an optical sight, but this option will be relevant if you want to make a compact carbine from a pistol.

The barrel of the pistol has rifling. Pistol caliber 4.5mm.

The bullets must first be installed in special containers:

Bullet container

Bullet container

After equipping containers with bullets, the containers must be loaded into the magazine. This method has rather negative aspects: the containers are small, inserting bullets is not very convenient, and the bullets also need to be selected so that they fit tightly. In general, it will be more of a problem for the owner than any exciting process. In the field, these containers will generally get lost and it will be impossible to find them somewhere in the grass.

Initially, the gun goes up to 3 J, but if you “clean out the factory debris” from the valve, then the gun becomes “vigorous” even on acid, not to mention compressed air, in which the speed of bullets weighing 0.5 - 0.6 grams. reach up to 240-250 “parrots per year”, which is an excellent result for a relatively compact pistol.

Perhaps another disadvantage is the pressure gauge, which is located at the bottom of the handle. On the one hand, you don’t need to point the weapon at yourself to control the pressure in the tank, on the other hand, it’s really not very conveniently located.

But everything described above is rather the personal opinion of the author and nothing more. Now is the time to get down to the real specs of this air pistol. Go!

To summarize, we can note the following:

  1. The shot is fired only from preliminary cocking. This will ensure safety while carrying the pistol while loaded.
  2. Two types of energy source.

If caught with a gun

If you are caught with such a pistol, it is advisable to become a victim of an unscrupulous manufacturer. First you need to take steps that could position you as an athlete's shooter. Find some shooting range or shooting club and sign up there.

If there is no such thing nearby, create a group of sports pistol shooting enthusiasts from your legal VK page. Accept a few of your friends into the group and fill it with content. Send several letters to reputable shooters with questions about possible participation in some competitions. When asked by the investigator why there was a loaded pistol in the holster, the answer was that he was going to or from training and did it mechanically.

Documents for weapons must be kept. Cash and sales receipts and a manufacturer's certificate with the store's seal. Under no circumstances should I say that I have read any articles about the real muzzle energy of this pistol. In this case, you will probably be able to appear before the law as a victim of an insidious manufacturer who sold you a low-quality pistol that is structurally similar to a weapon. Which you use exclusively for sports.

Ataman M1 costs an average of about 4 thousand rubles. The Ataman M1U modification, with refill from a fire extinguisher, sells for about 5 thousand rubles. The price for Ataman M2 is about 11 thousand rubles. It is difficult to buy older versions of Ataman. There are practically no Ataman and Ataman M pistols left on sale.
