R-27 missile: modernization completed, serial production for aerospace forces ahead

Since the mid-eighties, the air forces of the USSR and Russia, as well as a number of other countries, have been armed with medium-range air-to-air missiles of the R-27 family. Since then, such weapons have been repeatedly modernized, aimed at improving the basic characteristics and combat qualities. Recently it became known about a new modernization, the results of which will affect the combat effectiveness of the Aerospace Forces this year.

News about modernization

On May 29, Izvestia published new data on the development of the R-27 family of missiles.
The publication's sources reported that testing of the updated weapon has been completed and its serial production is being prepared. Already this year, the aerospace forces will receive new weapons for development and implementation. We are talking about the modernization of missiles of the R-27P and R-27R lines with radar homing heads - passive and semi-active, respectively. Upgraded products receive new and improved components, which gives a certain increase in performance. It is argued that after such an update, the R-27 missiles will be able to solve a wider range of combat missions and do it more effectively.

According to Izvestia, the modernized missiles have already been tested in the conditions of the Aerospace Forces units. The products were tested in Syria. The tests were carried out together with the Su-30SM and Su-35 fighters. In the future, these vehicles will become the main carriers of the R-27. At the same time, such missiles will remain in the weapons range of other Russian-made fighters.

Preparations are now underway for full-scale serial production of modernized R-27s for the Russian Aerospace Forces. The first batch of weapons will be handed over to the customer before the end of this year. It is likely that the products also have export potential, but information about orders from abroad is not yet available.

Ways of modernization

Some information has been published on ways to modernize missiles.
Methods for releasing updated products are also being clarified. From the available data it follows that the Aerospace Forces will begin to receive completely new missiles, and in parallel, products from the arsenals will be updated. In both cases, the customer will be able to receive improved modern weapons. First of all, the on-board electronics of the rocket have been modernized - the autopilot and seeker. This simplifies the procedure for target acquisition and further shooting. Some tasks are solved automatically, which reduces the pilot’s workload and simplifies piloting in general. The operating modes of the seeker are preserved. The missiles will be able to be aimed at a radio signal source in the form of a radar or jamming station, or hit an object illuminated by the carrier’s onboard radar.

In order to improve flight performance, the modernization project uses a new solid propellant charge for the rocket engine. The consequence of this is increased energy potential, which can be used to increase mass or increase flight speed and range.

From the published data it follows that new on-board instruments and other components can be installed both on newly launched missiles and on products being repaired and modernized.

Benefits of modernization

R-27 missiles were previously produced in several basic modifications.
Products of the R-27R line were equipped with several types of semi-active radar seeker. The R-27P line received passive RGSN. There is also a modification with an infrared seeker - it is designated by the letter “T”. In all cases, the seeker is complemented by an inertial navigation system to reach the target. According to recent reports, the new project involves a major upgrade of guidance systems. It should be expected that this will lead to an increase in the target detection and tracking range. You should also expect an increase in the probability of hitting a target due to improved accuracy.

The first versions of the R-27 guided missiles showed a flight range of no more than 50-70 km. Subsequently, new modifications were created with improved engines and higher flight characteristics. The most advanced models have a flight range of up to 110 km, provided by a dual-mode solid propellant engine.

During the modernization of the R-27 missile, they receive a new engine. It is known to provide energy enhancements and benefits in terms of flight performance. However, it has not yet been clarified how exactly such advantages will be used. However, from the point of view of practical application, both increasing the flight range and increasing the mass of the warhead will be useful.

There is no information about updating the warhead. However, the existing 39-kg rod warhead is a serious threat to aircraft of all main classes.

According to domestic media, after the proposed modernization, the R-27 missiles will be able to fight all major types of aircraft. With their help, it will be possible to effectively destroy aircraft of all classes, including modern fifth-generation fighters, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles.

Modernization potential

According to known data, guided missiles of the R-27 family are perhaps the most popular air-to-air weapons in the Russian armed forces.
This fact clearly shows the importance and necessity of the latest modernization project. The purchase of improved new missiles and the gradual updating of products from warehouses will help maintain the combat effectiveness of fighter aircraft at the required level. It is argued that updating the R-27 missiles will not affect their compatibility with the carriers. Such weapons will continue to be able to be used by all major Russian Air Force fighters - from various modifications of the Su-27 to the latest Su-30SM and Su-35S. Probably, one of the carriers of the R-27 will be the promising fifth-generation fighter Su-57.

Thus, the new modernization project allows us to keep in service well-proven weapons that have not yet exhausted their potential. The creation of new options for electronics and engines will ensure continued service with a certain increase in performance, as well as with certain savings, because industry will not have to start the entire production cycle from scratch.

The first production samples of the modernized R-27R and R-27P missiles will arrive at the Russian Aerospace Forces this year. In the future, we should expect the production of new batches of such weapons in the interests of our army. At the same time, new missiles have a certain export potential. The R-27 family of missiles are used in seven foreign countries, and only some of them can produce such weapons on their own. The remaining states can be considered as potential buyers.

Due to unification and continuity, missiles of the R-27 family will be able to maintain their position in the field of aerospace forces weapons. The advantageous combination of retained and newly acquired capabilities, as well as compatibility with various carrier aircraft, gives such weapons great prospects - both in our army and on the international market.
