Kalashnikov light machine gun RPK-74 cartridge caliber 5.45 mm

The 5.45-mm Kalashnikov RPK-74M light machine gun (Modernized) is an improved version of the RPK-74 model, made by modifying the original model using innovations from the AK-74M assault rifle after its adoption in 1991.

The work was carried out in 1993 at the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant and the Vyatka-Polyansky Machine-Building Plant, observing the principle of unifying the new light machine gun with a modernized machine gun.

By the Decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR dated January 18, 1974, and the subsequent Order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR dated March 18, 1974, a new unified 5.45-mm complex was adopted for service, which included a 5.45-mm machine gun cartridge, four models 5 .45-mm machine gun and four models of 5.45-mm light machine gun with two butt options. When developing a 5.45 mm automatic cartridge (5.45×39) with a reduced recoil impulse, its use for both an assault rifle and a light machine gun was initially taken into account. Moreover, the new cartridge made it possible to increase the maneuverability and portable ammunition of a light machine gunner.

RPK-74 machine gun

The new family of small arms includes the RPK 74 (index 6P18) light machine guns with a fixed stock and the RPKS 74 (6P19) with a folding stock. The differences in their design, in comparison with the AK 74, are the same as those of the RPK in comparison with the AKM - an elongated barrel, the presence of a folding bipod and a large capacity of the standard magazine. New elements were the muzzle device and the magazine. A slotted flash suppressor is attached to the muzzle of the barrel, which can be replaced with a blank firing bushing.

As in the AK 74 assault rifle, in the light machine gun there is a cutout on the bolt frame on the left side to make it easier, and a rectangular protrusion at the bottom of the frame prevents the bolt from interacting with the upper cartridges in the magazine when the automatic parts move backwards. The shutter is smaller and does not have an annular recess in the cup; the firing pin protrudes above the shutter mirror. The ejector socket in the bolt took the form of an open groove. The gas tube with the barrel lining at the rear end has a spring washer that eliminates its swing and expansion effect on the gas chamber.

RPK-74M machine gun

RPK 74 is equipped with a sector sight with a mechanism for introducing lateral corrections. Fire from a light machine gun is conducted mainly in short bursts; the average burst length is 5-7 shots. The reduction in recoil impulse and shorter bullet flight time to the target made it possible to improve the accuracy of fire by approximately 1.5 times compared to the 7.62 mm RPK. A series of low-impulse cartridges for small arms includes the 7N6 cartridge with an ordinary PS bullet with a steel core, 7TZ with a T tracer bullet, 7TZM with a modernized tracer bullet, an armor-piercing cartridge with a BP bullet, 7N10 with a PP bullet with increased penetration, as well as a blank 7X3 and a training cartridge. With a PS bullet mass of 3.45 g, the cartridge mass is 10.2 g, i.e. the mass of wearable ammunition with the same supply of ammunition turns out to be 1.5 times less than with the cartridge mod. 1943

The machine gun is fed from a sector-shaped box magazine with a plastic body and a staggered double-row arrangement of 45 rounds. There is a special device for equipping a magazine from a clip. One box magazine was adopted for the RPK 74 and RPKS 74; the disk magazine in the RPK 74 was abandoned for production and economic reasons. In the manufacture of the butt and fore-end, wood gradually moved to plastic (glass-filled polyamide).

It is worth noting that in the USSR, earlier than in other countries, the unification of small arms, both normal and small caliber, was carried out at the squad-platoon level. This was facilitated by the high reliability and modernization margin inherent in the “Kalashnikov system”.

The RPK 74 and its modifications are in service in Russia, the former republics of the USSR and in a number of foreign countries. Abroad (in the German Democratic Republic, Poland, Yugoslavia, Libya, Finland), copies of the Soviet RPK and RPK 74 machine guns and their modifications were produced, or their own models of light machine guns of the “Kalashnikov system” were created. 5.45 mm light machine guns also have “night” modifications. The rail on the left side of the receiver of the RPK 74N machine gun is used for installing non-illuminated (passive) night sights using a standard dovetail mount.

In accordance with the model of the installed night sight, modifications are distinguished: RPK 74N1 - with an NSPU sight (1PN34); RPK 74N2 - with NSPUM sight (1PN58); RPK 74NZ - with NSPU-3 sight (1PN51). The NSPU-5 (1PN83) night sight can also be used. This sight has a magnification of 3.5x, allowing you to identify a person at a distance of up to 300 m. A universal shooting sight 1P29 with a magnification of 4x, weighing 0.8 kg, can also be installed. In local conflicts, RPK 74N light machine guns with an optical sight installed instead of a night sight were also used. The weight of the RPK 74N1 machine gun in firing position with the NSPU sight was 7.66 kg.

Options and upgrades

RPK-74 (GRAU Index - 6P18) - basic version chambered for 5.45x39 mm;

RPK-74P (GRAU Index - 6P18P) - RPK-74 with an optical sight 1P29;

RPK-74N (GRAU Index - 6P18N1) - RPK-74 with a night sight NSPU (1PN34) or optical PSO-1;

RPK-74N2 (GRAU Index - 6P18N2) - RPK-74 with NSPUM night sight (1PN58);

RPKS-74 (GRAU Index - 6P19) - version with a folding stock chambered for 5.45x39 mm;

RPKS-74P (GRAU Index - 6P19P) - RPKS-74 with an optical sight 1P29;

RPKS-74N (GRAU Index - 6P19N1) - RPKS-74 with NSPU night sight;

RPKS-74N2 (GRAU Index - 6P19N2) - RPKS-74 with NSPUM night sight;

RPKS-74N3 (GRAU Index - 6P19N3) - RPKS-74 with unilluminated night sight NSPU-3 (1PN51);

RPK-74M (GRAU Index - 6P39) - a modernized version, has the following number of differences: 1. similar to the AK-74M, the forend and receiver lining of the gas tube are made of impact-resistant glass-filled thermoset plastic AG-4V. Metal parts are also protected from corrosion by a special coating. 2. the barrel life has been increased when firing the 7N10 cartridge, new at the time of modernization, with a bullet of increased penetration (the declared barrel life is up to 50 thousand shots) 3. the receiver and its cover have been strengthened. On the left wall of the receiver there is a bar for installing a night or optical sight 4. the stop of the guide rod of the return spring is equipped with a recessed stop (which prevents the receiver cover from falling off during impacts and shocks) 5. the machine gun is equipped with a plastic butt that folds to the left, fixed in the firing position with a push-button latch
