Design and modifications of the Toz-120 hunting rifle

TOZ 120 is one of the best modern options produced at the plant in Tula. The TOZ 120 shotgun today enjoys well-deserved popularity among hunting fans. The TOZ hunting rifle is so successful that in all respects it is valued as the “vertical” 34 model, known since Soviet times. Statements from those using the TOZ 120 shotgun confirm that the craftsmen were able to preserve the advantages of previous models with similar placement of barrels, combining them in one sample. Having produced a trial batch of new TOZ 120 shotguns, the plant won the attention of fans of the classic versions of over-and-unders with two barrels. Having tested the TOZ 120 gun in operation, everyone who had previously used heavy Saiga or Vepr carbines changed their minds. For them, regular hunting is now associated with the TOZ 120 gun.

Toz 120 has many modifications

Which one can you do?

The Tula Toz-120 gun turned out to be simple and effective.
Many people complain that it is 30 years behind the times due to its simple design. But this leads to the question, what is the point of modern functions for simple hunting that a person will not use? The simplicity of the design minimizes the possibility of breakdowns and provides a high supply of working life. The weapon is an excellent option for novice hunters who are just starting out on this trail. A minimum number of components makes repairing the gun inexpensive; caring for the weapon is not difficult: it is enough to clean it occasionally. The double-barreled shotgun fully justifies its cost. Connoisseurs of luxury can make an individual order, according to which the weapon will be decorated with engraving and carving.

How does it perform in practice?

Over 15 years of experience using the Toz-120, many hunters speak well of the weapon. It is able to work stably in the most extreme conditions. It does not require special care, but, like any other weapon, it needs periodic cleaning of all its components.

Experienced hunters say that this budget gun imposes serious competition on more expensive domestic and foreign analogues. It is convenient, practical, perfectly balanced and allows you to fire two instant shots to hit a target at short distances.

The Toz-120 shotgun performs well in hunting small and medium-sized animals, as well as birds. In skillful hands it shows high efficiency: excellent accuracy and good accuracy. And all this at a price of 15-20 thousand rubles.

Advantages

The TOZ-34 shotgun has many advantages, thanks to which it has become so popular among our hunters:

  • Excellent accuracy of the gun. High accuracy is achieved by using strong chokes and drilling the barrel bore to 18.5-18.7 mm. A smoother transition from the chamber to the bore reduces the pressure in the first phase of the shot and reduces the deformation of the shot, hence improving the parameters of the shot. Sometimes there are guns whose choke constrictions are stronger than those indicated in the passport; it is better for the owner of the gun to measure the choke constrictions themselves with a caliper in order to accurately verify the size of the chokes of his gun.
  • Light weight. The standard TOZ-34 weighs 3.1-3.2 kg, but in the piece version the weight of the gun was reduced to 3.0 kg. The main competitor of the IZH-27, according to its passport, weighed 3.4 kg.
  • A double-barreled shotgun with vertically positioned barrels is the best design of a smoothbore shotgun, no matter what fans of horizontal, five-shot and pump-action shotguns say. It is possible to fire a second aimed shot from a vertical rifle much faster because the axis of the barrels coincides with the aiming lines and the barrels do not deviate to the side due to recoil, as in a gun with horizontal barrels. It is also believed that the production of verticals is much more technologically advanced, and thanks to this, verticals have greater survivability.
  • Internal triggers are much more convenient for hunting than external ones. There is no need for additional operation to cock the hammers before firing.
  • Good balance of the gun, giving good grip. Everyone who has picked up a gun talks about this.
  • Good turning ability, good controllability, ease of quick insertion and quick offhand shooting.
  • Two triggers allow you to select the barrel from which the shot will be fired. Each barrel can have its own cartridge, with its own characteristics. The hunter, depending on the situation, chooses which cartridge to use for the shot.

Appearance

Disassembling the TOZ-120 is quite simple and quick. The wooden parts of this gun are made from high quality beech or seasoned sparkling walnut.

Depending on the type of execution, the external finishing can be done in a variety of ways. Both electrochemical and laser engraving can be used to design metal parts of a gun. Sometimes hand-made, highly artistic inlays with precious metals or mother-of-pearl are made on personalized piece weapons. The wooden parts of the TOZ can be decorated not only with carvings, but also with notches. The first type of design looks especially elegant and beautiful in places where a regular notch should traditionally be applied, made to prevent the hand from slipping and holding the carbine at the moment of shooting. The sighting devices on this gun include a ventilated sighting rib with a front sight. The package also includes swivels necessary to comfortably carry a 120-TOZ shotgun while hunting.

general information

The Toz-120 is equipped with 12-gauge cartridges (depending on the modification), has two twin barrels and is used for hunting: both amateur and commercial. The development of the gun was carried out by E.G. Starukhin, who took the no less popular Toz-91 as a basis. The engineer retained many components that showed their best performance and eliminated all the shortcomings of the analogue.

The practical design of the weapon allows it to be used in any climate zone. The exception was the tropical zone with high humidity. Under such conditions, corrosion of the main components of the double-barreled shotgun accelerates, which can damage it.

In addition to hunting, the Toz-120 shotgun can be used for sports competitions. For this purpose, the Tula Arms Plant produced special “sports” modifications:

  • Toz-120-12-1T - used on a trench stand;
  • Toz-120-1K - used on a round stand;
  • Toz-120-12-1S - used for training in sports shooting.

The trigger mechanism has undergone the greatest change. In the 91st model it had one trigger, and in the 120th it was supplemented with a function for switching the order of shots. The selector switch is combined with a safety button.

As mentioned above, lovers of luxury can get a unique “vertical” on an individual order. There will be no technical changes; the only difference from the production versions will be in appearance.

The metal parts of the case are subject to change. They are engraved using various technologies, in particular, manual engraving using precious stones. Wooden components are decorated with carvings or carvings.

Operating principle

  • In order to open the barrels, you need to move the locking lever all the way to the right.
  • The lever moves the locking frame out of the groove, and the frame presses the triggers. The triggers release the strikers, the strikers, under the action of their springs, are pressed behind the forehead plate of the block.
  • The bevels of the barrels press on the cocking levers, which cock the hammers.
  • The cocked hammers push the cocking indicators up. The cocking indicators protrude above the plane of the box, indicating that the hammers are cocked.
  • When closing the gun, the hammers remain cocked. The locking frame moves forward and locks the barrels. The cocking lever also returns to its original position. If the locking lever has not reached the end, it must be moved by hand.
  • In order to fire a shot, you need to move the safety forward to the “fire” position, take aim and press the trigger. When you press the trigger, the sear is disengaged from the cocking mechanism and the trigger, under the action of the mainspring, strikes the firing pin, firing a shot.

Operating principle

The design of TOZ-120 is very simple. According to some hunters, this is a disadvantage. On the other hand, such a model is ideal for a beginner, for whom the complex design of the rifle will be an insurmountable obstacle.

When opening the gun, the following happens:

  • the lever is pulled to the right until it stops - at the same time, the locking axis pushes the locking frame out of the groove;
  • under the action of a spring, the stop moves the pusher behind the forehead of the box. At the same time, the locking lever is fixed;
  • open the gun - the ejector sears exert pressure on the cockers, which, in turn, cock the hammers. The spring presses the firing pins behind the plane of the receiver's forehead;
  • when fully opened, cartridges and cartridges that have misfired are reflected. The reflection mechanism can be removed: to do this, remove the forend and screw in a special switch as far as possible. To reactivate the function, the switch is returned to its original position: in this case, the handguard is assembled with a box without a vertical slot.

When closing, the operating mechanism is as follows:

  • the ejectors retract, but the hammers remain cocked;
  • the barrels press the pusher, which, in turn, inserts the stop into the groove of the locking lever. This releases the lever;
  • The locking axis, under spring pressure, drives the locking frame into the groove, and the lever moves along the axis of the rifle.

If the gun is new, the lever may not reach the axle. Before shooting, you must indicate the order of shots. To do this, the fuse is moved to the right position - the lower barrel fires first, the upper one second, or to the left position - the upper one shoots first, the lower one second.

Point the TOZ-120 at the target and press the hook. In this case, the disconnector moves to the second sear to fire the second shot. When pressed again, the second barrel fires. The trigger pull may be slightly higher than with the first shot.

The use of sporting cartridges on hunting versions of the TOZ-120 is not allowed. It is also not allowed to increase the mass of gunpowder and shot in the cartridge.

Reviews

Hunters' opinions about this carbine are quite contradictory. Some people love the TOZ-120 for its unpretentiousness and high reliability, especially in bad weather conditions. Many also note a good fight with low recoil. However, there are also users who criticize this product from the Tula plant for its unreliable descent, noting that it often leads to doublets. Others talk about the inconvenience of the fore-end and the heavy weight of the weapon.

But one thing is certain: this hunting rifle has found a consumer niche. It is equally suitable for novice hunters who have bought their first gun and professional hunters. The TOZ-120 series models have a successful combination of elegance and simplicity of design.

Specifications

If the design of the rifle is considered by some to be too simple, “outdated,” then the performance characteristics of the TOZ-120 gun are still valuable. The differences between the different modifications are not that big.

Modifications

After the war, the plant developed several versions of this series at once. The first of them were hunting specimens 8 and 9; modifications of 11, 12 and 16 versions were deservedly popular.

They were lightweight small-caliber carbines, intended mainly for commercial hunting. Their weight was reduced to 2 kilograms, the designers provided these models with an innovation - a butt made of birch wood.

The production of hunting carbines did not stop, and in 2000 the production of the model in question began, manufactured for commercial hunting and for sport shooting. As a matter of fact, a double-barreled shotgun is classified according to these criteria.

The basic version is represented by a product with chambers of different lengths for a standard charge and for Magnum ammunition. The following models are distinguished:

  • 12-1E – equipped with an ejector, charges 12/70;
  • 12M-1E – there is also an ejector, but Magnum cartridges are used;
  • 12V-1E – chambered for standard 12/70 cartridges; in addition to the ejector, the package includes replaceable muzzle liners. This option is considered more universal;
  • 12MV-1E – the configuration is similar to the previous model, but Magnum ammunition is used.

The sports line involves firing in different conditions, which is why the plant offers the consumer several versions:

  • 12-1E – for trench shooting;
  • 1K – used on a round stand;
  • 12-1S is a training version designed for sports shooting training.

Modifications that can be made with a double-barreled shotgun boil down to decorating the butt. In custom-made versions, such decorations are provided by default, but you can always replace the stock stock with a version decorated with carvings or engravings.

Design

Structurally, the TOZ-120 rifle is divided into 3 parts: barrels, a box with a butt and a forend.

The trunks are removable and located in a vertical plane. Made from the strongest barrel steel, the barrel channels are chrome-plated. On hunting rifles, as a rule, barrels with a narrowing are installed; a combination with different narrowing is possible. On sports cars they often use cylindrical ones.

The barrels are connected to the box using hinges and trunnions on the locking frame - 2 axle shafts that rest on the bearing. The trunnion-type connection allows you to reduce the height of the receiver and significantly simplifies the process of separating the barrels.

  • The sight is mechanical - ventilated rail.
  • The receiver is attached to the butt with a coupling screw. The butt is made of wood - walnut, beech, and is equipped with a cheek piece.
  • The trigger-type trigger is located on a separate base and is made according to the selector type. To determine the firing order, there is a selector switch in the form of a lever on the neck of the butt. The initial combination is that the lower barrel fires first, the top barrel fires second. When you switch the lever, the order changes. The trigger is equipped with a safety cock and a non-automatic safety, which eliminates accidental shooting. The extreme right or left position of the safety denotes the “fire” position, the extreme rear - “safety”.
  • The chamber is chrome plated. The sleeves are pulled out each with their own ejector. The fired one is ejected by an automatic ejector, the unfired one remains in place. Spent cartridges are removed when opening the rifle.

Receivers and stocks can be decorated with carvings or engravings.

Bullets

This model, according to many, is not only convenient and easy to use, but also has excellent shooting accuracy and adaptability. The new modification, which has one trigger with a selector, makes it possible to instantly fire two shots in a row, and this is sometimes very necessary when hunting. This gun is cocked when it is opened: when it returns to its original state, the weapon is ready to fire. A very convenient solution is the extension of sleeves, carried out due to the “activity” of separate ejectors. Many users especially like the fact that the spent cartridge case is immediately and automatically ejected by the ejector.

The lever on the selector for the sequence of shots is also a fuse. A specially designed modification of the TOZ-120 with a 76 mm chamber allows firing with a Magnum-type bullet.

General description of TOZ-120

The TOZ-120 over-shooter is a modern hunting rifle, developed on the basis of the TOZ-91 weapon with an improved design. Initially, the engineers of the Tula Arms Plant set themselves the goal of creating a replacement for the outdated but beloved TOZ-34, so it is not surprising that many buyers compare the new model with the famous vertical gun. From the TOZ-91, the gun took only the best design advantages: the firing mechanism, the principle of barrel soldering, and so on. Also, the new model was freed from the shortcomings that were present in the old TOZ-34.

The development belongs to E.G. Starukhin.

The TOZ-120 shotgun has received major changes in appearance. PJSC "Tula Arms Plant" has long realized that you can make good money if you produce not only high-quality, but also beautiful weapons. So connoisseurs will be pleased with the large number of engravings on both metal and wooden stocks. Especially wealthy hunters can take advantage of the opportunity to make an individual order so that the rifle acquires gold and silver inserts, precious stones or personalized carving.

The new double-barreled shotgun differs from the TOZ-91 and TOZ-34 only in one trigger (switching between barrels occurs using a special lever). Also in the 120 model, a selector switch appeared, combined with a safety button.

  • The first serves to disable the barrel locking mechanism if it is necessary to remove entire cartridges.
  • The second is a much more convenient version of the fuse than the classic flag.

The weapon has become not only safer in terms of operation, but also much more convenient.

Disassembly

Partial disassembly is necessary when cleaning and lubricating TOZ-120. The full one is made only for repairs and only in a weapons workshop.

Partial implies the following actions:

  • check that there are no cartridges in the chamber;
  • press the latch and, moving the forend down and forward, remove it from the barrels;
  • turn the locking lever to the right, open the barrels and disconnect them from the box;
  • bring the lever to the right to the limit, retract the pusher and release the lever so that it returns to the position along the axis.

TOZ-120 is assembled in the reverse order.

Store the gun unloaded with the hooks lowered. Ammunition must be stored separately.

Shot

Photo TOZ-120 is proof of the elegance of this carbine. Its detachable barrels, to separate which you need to pull back and remove the lever latch on the forend, are opened and removed from the box. Cocking one of the two internal triggers in the striking mechanism or preloading the mainsprings is carried out when the gun is opened. And to prevent an accidental shot, safety platoons are provided. The trigger mechanism is equipped with one hook, which, when fired, releases the triggers first from the lower and then from the upper barrels.

The sequence of bullet release can be changed using the selector, the function of which is taken over by the safety button. The single-trigger mechanism in the TOZ-120, reviews of the quality of fire from which are mostly positive, allows you to quickly fire two consecutive shots, while reducing the interval between salvos to a minimum. This opportunity is especially relevant for a hunter when shooting in thickets or short-range shooting, when prey appears unexpectedly and for a very short time. The spent cartridge case is forced out of the barrel chamber on each barrel using a separate ejector, after which it is ejected. If the shot was not fired, the cartridge is only pulled out of the chamber, but not ejected.

The uniqueness of the trunks

Their length can be seven hundred ten or seven hundred fifty millimeters. The chambers are made only for a seventy mm sleeve. Both the lower and upper barrels have half-millimeter choke constrictions. TOZ-120, the individual production of which involves the production of guns with both one and two cylindrical channels, according to experts, is one of the most popular types of hunting equipment today.

The ability to purchase a rifle with a pair of barrels, having any desired combination of muzzle devices, is a rather attractive characteristic. This allows users to turn this carbine into a gun that is most suitable for certain types of hunting. Everything will depend on what kind of prey its owner prefers to go after at a given time. The weight of TOZ-120 is three kilograms, four hundred grams.
