TOZ-122 is called by many the best carbine that was produced by Tula gunsmiths. This opinion is based not on empty words, but on the real combat qualities of the weapon.
For quite a long time, the Tula Arms Plant produced hunting carbines with a caliber of 5.6 mm. Such weapons made it possible to hunt small game.
Hunters, closer to 2000, began to show interest in larger calibers in order to hunt large animals. The wishes did not go unheeded.
In 2002, the designers presented the TOZ-122 to the public, which embodied all the best that was in previous models of hunting rifles.
This rifled weapon is designed for hunting large animals chambered for the .308 Win cartridge (7.62x51). This ammunition is quite enough to shoot the largest representatives of game animals.
The carbine has become a unique embodiment of an attractive appearance, affordable price and excellent combat qualities. This weapon has a lot of positive reviews among owners.

An optical sight with excellent characteristics included in the basic package makes it possible to conduct more targeted shooting. The presence of restraints made of high-strength plastic, a rubber butt plate that ensures a comfortable position of the head and the optimal barrel length of the TOZ-122 carbine make the model especially comfortable even during long-term use.
Purpose
The excellent level of balance of the model allows it to be used in different directions: the TOZ-122 carbine can be used for participation in professional and amateur hunting, for fun - target shooting, for training accuracy, for taking part in sports shooting competitions, for self-defense. And everywhere the indicators are among the highest in comparison with analogues.
Varieties
There are varieties of the TOZ-122 model on sale, the butts of which were made using wood from certain tree species with high hardness:
- beech,
- birch,
- nut.
Technical characteristics of the TOZ-122 carbine are given below.
Cartridge calibers may vary: 7.62x51, .308 Vin.
Design
The TOZ 120 double-barreled shotgun, intended for hunting, is distinguished by certain features unique to the model in question:
the trigger mechanism is designed according to the selector principle, its operation is fundamentally different from previous models
A couple of shots are quickly fired from the TOZ 120 gun, which is especially important when shooting from a short distance when the target appears in the field of view for an instant; The configuration of the TOZ 120 shotgun is classic - the first shot is fired from the lower barrel, then from the upper barrel. The sequence of shots is switched by a lever located on the butt neck
It also activates the fuse; cocking is automatic when opening. Safety is ensured by safety cockings and a non-automatic safety lock, which reduces the likelihood of accidental release to zero; spent cartridges are removed through an ejector mechanism, the operation of which is based on separate ejectors. The system is convenient, it completely ejects the cartridge case, eliminating the possibility of losing the charge, which is only slightly pushed out of the barrel by the ejector, allowing the hunter to quickly get it out; after closing the barrels, the ejectors will retract, the hammers will remain in the cocked position. The barrels are pressed by the pusher, which locks the axis against the pressure created by the spring and drives the locking frame into the groove. The barrel channel of the TOZ 120 hunting rifle is chrome-plated, durable and reliably protected from corrosion. Its fastening to the receiver is ensured by an under-barrel hook, a locking frame and a hinge axis; The choke constrictions of different models of TOZ 120 hunting rifles are different. The classic version is represented by a choke on top and a barrel on the bottom, there are models with a narrowing according to a different pattern, and there are samples with barrels for a cylinder.

I have a TOZ 17 - 1959 model, now these are in the store for 800 UAH. they stand, and no one takes it. The barrel is perfect - (this is provided that I can go without reading it for two months), and how much it has shot in 51 years is not known to me, the visual appearance of the wood and bluing - have seen a harsh life. The optics are not installed, the trigger is from the order of protozoa. With an open sight at 50 meters, with MATCH cartridges (picked up), - a heap of 2 cm. To have a heap of 8 cm, you need to shoot at 100 meters, but I can’t see the target well - it floats a little, perhaps that’s why this is the result. I think if you install optics, it will show its worth, and I’m sure the pile will be much better. For this reason, I value my TOZ 17, and I don’t plan to change it to IM. I’ll say one thing, if the barrel is good, then our weapon is worthy of respect, I agree, the design of the stock is lame, the name of the manufacturer’s company does not warm the soul, everything is somehow angular, in a word - classic TOZ.. But if you shoot, and at the same time you hit like you want it, you get unspeakable pleasure. And what is better, Marlin or TOZ, I think that Marlin does not require modification, but both need to be shot, without shooting, you can take such a pig in a poke, despite the vigorous name, that only with your hands on the barrel and the butt on the tree.
TOZ-122 - the best Tula carbine of serious caliber
The TOZ-122 hunting carbine is a long-awaited development of the Tula Arms Plant, which was demonstrated in 2002. This carbine was developed on the basis of the TOZ-109, and immediately became popular, since fans of Tula carbines had long been waiting for the appearance of a reliable and modern rifled weapon suitable for hunting large animals. In TOZ-122, hunters received a weapon with an attractive design, high reliability and a more than affordable price.
The technical characteristics of this hunting rifle are so good that most reviews from owners of this weapon are positive. Hunters note the high accuracy of the carbine, its reliability and ergonomics.
The history of the appearance of the TOZ-122 carbine
Currently, the TOZ-122 hunting carbine is called the best rifled weapon that the Tula Arms Factory has ever produced. Such statements are based on real reviews from hunters who, comparing their TOZ-122 carbines with other brands of rifled weapons of a similar class, came to the conclusion that it has no competitors in its price category.
Until 2000, the Tula Arms Plant mainly produced carbines of 5.6 mm caliber. The features of these carbines made it possible to hunt with them only small and medium game. For all their many advantages, small-caliber Tula carbines were completely unsuitable for hunting large animals.
By the beginning of 2000, Tula designers decided to develop a new model of a hunting carbine in .308 Win caliber. Already in 2002, the new TOZ-122 carbine was presented to the public, which was intended for hunting medium and large game. The 7.63x51 caliber was enough not only to hunt wild boar or elk, but even bear.

The manufacturer managed to please Russian hunters. Having absorbed all the best qualities of small-caliber carbines and received a serious caliber, TOZ-122 took one of the leading places in its class.

Part 1. Carbines MTs125, MTs126, MTs127, MTs128, MTs131.
You name the most popular and most desirable models of domestic rifled self-loading hunting weapons for connoisseurs, connoisseurs and collectors.
It is also important that you pay attention to good condition, because most of them are old, only the Tula self-loading carbine MTs554 from the latest developments.
The production is small, and only a few end up on the secondary market; the MTs125 and MTs126 carbines of 7.62 mm caliber from the Tula company TsKIB SOO are especially valuable.
The competition among potential buyers is great, they wait for years, the “License to purchase...” is kept at the ready.
There are a lot of different carbines with different reloading mechanisms, but now we will talk about MC hunting models with a gas-operated reloading mechanism produced at different times, and the Izhevsk “Bear” carbines need an independent topic.
I would like to draw your attention to the fact that almost all self-loading carbines from TsKIB SOO, with the exception of the MC-Berkut carbine and other models based on army samples, are designed as hunting ones.
They have virtually the same reloading system: a gas release mechanism with a piston stroke of one or another length is mounted under the barrel. This design is more complex than a weapon equipped with an upper gas release mechanism, but it is more practical and convenient to use, since the center of gravity of the carbine shifts downward.
Most MC self-loading carbines are equipped with a stock with a long fore-end that covers the gas release mechanism; as a result, they look proportional and elegant.
MC hunting self-loading carbines are very numerous; they differ in the design of the bolt and chamber locking unit and are designed for the use of cartridges of different calibers.
Some are chambered for 7.62 mm centerfire cartridges, including domestic 7.62×51 caliber, as well as .308Win caliber. And the rest are chambered for domestic centerfire cartridges of 5.6 mm caliber, that is, 5.6×39 caliber.
I will name the main models:
- MTs125 carbine for firing cartridges of 7.62x51 caliber, and later .308Win caliber, - MTs126 carbine, designed for firing 7.62x51 caliber cartridges, - MTs126-1 carbine of .308Win caliber, which is a modified model MTs126, - MTs127, MTs128 carbines and MTs131, designed for the use of 5.6x39 caliber cartridges, - the MTs551 carbine, initially in 8x68S caliber, and then for cartridges of other calibers, - the MTs554 carbine of various calibers, including for .30-06Sprg, 8x57JS and 9.3× caliber cartridges 62, - MTs-Berkut carbine chambered for domestic cartridges of various calibers, including 7.62x51, 7.62x54R and 9x53R.

Many hunting self-loading rifled MC models were created in the period from 1975 to 1977, then one of the best periods of activity of the TsKIB SOO company, as demonstrated by the carbines of the MTs125 - MTs126 - MTs127 - MTs128 - MTs131 group.
Like many other branded hunting models, these carbines belong to a high category; their service life, determined by the quality of work and materials and calculated by the number of shots, is very long.
In the current market for hunting weapons, all of them are very rare; collectors and lovers of high-quality domestic weapons try not to miss any opportunity to purchase, and the owners carefully store their copies.
The first in this group is the MTs125 self-loading carbine of 7.62 mm caliber, shown in photo 1, which is reloaded using an under-barrel gas release mechanism with a short piston stroke. The barrel chamber is locked by four bolt lugs when the combat cylinder is turned.
The carbine has a standardized barrel 550 mm long and a removable rotary magazine that holds five rounds; this sample weighs approximately 3.6 kg. The safety button is located in the front post of the trigger safety guard.
All mechanisms are placed in a stock with a long fore-end; only the upper part of the bolt box with a window for removing spent cartridges and a bolt handle rises above it. Open sighting devices consist of a rear sight with folding flaps and a flat front sight. Despite its size and weight, the MTs125 carbine attracts attention with its elegant proportions.
Decorated with engraving on the metal of the bolt box, rotary magazine cover, optical sight bracket and even carvings on walnut wood, the MTs125 carbine is a spectacular representative of high-end branded rifled weapons.
In the subgroup of branded carbines with a gas-operated mechanism with a short piston stroke, there are weapons of a smaller caliber 5.6x39, this is the MTs127 carbine, which appeared in 1977, shown in photo 2. It is unified with the MTs125 carbine, it has a barrel of the same length of 550 mm.
However, this sample weighs less, only 3.3 kg, due to the smaller dimensions of the bolt box and bolt, due to the smaller dimensions of the cartridge. In fact, an independent proprietary subgroup of self-loading carbines has been formed, reloaded using a gas venting mechanism with a short piston stroke.
The MTs125 and MTs127 carbines were created by a large group of workers from the TsKIB SOO company, it is very important to name everyone: M.I. Skvortsov, A.K. Tatarinov, Yu.I. Berezin, I.P. Korneichev, Yu.V. Dyablov, N.V. Babanin, V.I. Bakalov, N.S. Ryzhov, V.A. Nikolaev, A.K. Zakharyan, M.V. Zotov, A.L. Protopopov, I.S. Bykov.
The design of the MTs126 self-loading carbine of 7.62x51 caliber, which appeared in 1975 and shown in photo 3, is significantly different in design. It is equipped with an under-barrel gas release mechanism with a long piston stroke and a bolt with a diameter of 24 mm with three lugs on a rotating combat face.
A shot with the shutter not fully closed is excluded. You can also reload the carbine manually, but only with the safety on. The removable in-line magazine holds four rounds. With a barrel of a standardized length of 550 mm, the MTs126 carbine weighs 3.4 kg. It is united with previous models by the shape of the stock with a long fore-end.
The ergonomics are similar: the bolt handle and the window for spent cartridges are located in the upper part of the bolt box above the stock, the safety button is installed in the front post of the safety bracket. This high-class model was created by V.N. Denisov, L.V. Kudryavtsev, N.S. Ryzhov, A.D. Sleptsov.
Photo 3. Photo by Evgeniy KOPEYKO |
MC rifled hunting models are under the constant attention of designers, promising samples of 7.62x51 caliber are being refined, in particular, being modernized for the ubiquitous .308Win caliber cartridge of almost the same size, but more powerful.
Thus, the MTs126-1 self-loading carbine chambered for this cartridge received a modified bolt design, its diameter was increased and equal to 26 mm, the bolt turned out to be very powerful and durable. For comparison, let me remind you that the MTs126 carbine has a bolt diameter of 24 mm.
The need to modify the bolt is due to the higher pressure that the .308Win caliber cartridge develops when fired compared to the domestic 7.62x51 caliber cartridge, therefore these cartridges are not interchangeable, despite the similar geometric parameters.
A .308Win caliber weapon can fire the domestic 7.62×51 caliber cartridge, as the pressure allows, but not vice versa. The suitability of the ammunition for the weapon must be carefully monitored.
The MTs128 carbine of 5.6×39 caliber was designed differently with a gas-operated reloading mechanism, distinguished by a large bolt box and separate stocks and forends. It was created in 1976 with the participation of N.I. Eliseeva and L.V. Kudryavtsev and is protected by a copyright certificate for the invention. The 530 mm long barrel with a chrome-plated channel is rigidly connected to the bolt box.
A bolt with three lugs locks the chamber in the bolt box. The detachable box magazine holds four rounds. The sighting line is long and therefore comfortable, open sighting devices, rear sight and front sight are mounted on the barrel so that its length is 445 mm.
This model weighs 3.2 kg, which is due to the considerable mass of the gas exhaust mechanism. There are few such examples and the MTs128 self-loading carbine of 5.6×39 caliber rarely appears on the modern secondary market.
Another self-loading carbine from TsKIB SOO has been developed for the 5.6×39 caliber cartridge, but as a mass-market model, this is the MTs131 sample with a gas-operated reloading mechanism. It was created in 1977, G.A. worked on it. Solomin, L.V. Kudryavtsev, V.M. Solomina, N.S. Ryzhov, F.A. Sibarchuk.
It is equipped with a removable magazine, including a large one, which can hold fifteen rounds, and this model with such a magazine weighs almost 3.6 kg. It has a 550 mm long barrel with a chrome-plated channel, a bolt with three lugs, a locking chamber in the bolt box, and open sighting devices forming a 430 mm long sighting line.
The stock is made of mainly birch wood, specially selected and seasoned, but inexpensive according to the category of the model.
Otherwise, this carbine is a typical representative of MC branded rifled weapons. Like other branded designs, the MTs131 self-loading carbine is protected by copyright certificates of invention and industrial design certificate.

Purpose of the TOZ-122 carbine
The TOZ-122 hunting carbine turned out to be a very balanced weapon. It is perfect for both professional and amateur hunting. The only caveat is that it is not recommended for a beginner to start with such a serious weapon; in extreme cases, you need to study all the nuances and structure of the carbine before going to the shooting range, much less hunting.
In addition to hunting, the carbine can be used for recreational and sport shooting:
- For target shooting;
- For simple accuracy training on various targets;
- For sport shooting competitions.
Some claim that the TOZ-122 carbine can be used for self-defense, but it is definitely not worth arguing that a rifled weapon is the best option for self-defense.
As for the execution, the following wood is usually used for the stocks of this carbine:
- Birch;
- Beech;
- Nut.
Walnut modifications are the most expensive. Also, the carbine can be ordinary, piece or gift. In addition, there are the following modifications:
- TOZ-122M, which is better known as TOZ-122-11. This is a modified version of the standard Tula carbine;
- TOZ-122R – almost identical to the base model. The only difference is the presence of a rubber butt pad;
- Few people know, but there is a carbine in 9.3x62 mm caliber. A very rare modification.
The latest modification is unlikely to be useful in Russian latitudes, because with it you can even hunt an elephant.
Description of design and principle of operation
The carbine was created on the basis of the simple and reliable TOZ-109. The hunting rifle consists of the following parts:
- trunk;
- Receiver;
- Feeding mechanism;
- Trigger;
- Impact mechanism;
- Lodges;
- Store;
- Sighting devices.
All TOZ-122 carbines are classic bolt-action rifles, that is, they have a sliding bolt of a classic design. The bolt handle is quite comfortable for the shooter. It is located on the right side, which is not a very good solution for a left-handed hunter. When the shutter is opened, the firing pin is cocked. Although the carabiner belongs to one of the lowest price categories, the manufacturer has provided for adjustment of the trigger force, which is usually found only in expensive carabiners. The trigger force range can be adjusted from 1 to 2.5 kgf.
The principle of operation is simple, because this carbine is not automatic, so even a beginner can learn to shoot from it. Shooting follows the same pattern as with any classic carbine.
Design of TOZ-8
Rifle barrel
Vpo-208
The barrel bore has four screw grooves, each with two turns. The length of the rifling stroke is 35 centimeters. The rifle number and year of manufacture can be found on the sighting block, which is located on the Toz-8 barrel.
The base of the front sight is installed in a longitudinal groove on the front of the barrel. There are two longitudinal grooves on the back of the barrel; they are made for an aiming block. There is also a special stump at the back, to which the receiver is attached using a pin. The barrel and stock are secured with a screw, which is screwed into a transverse groove on the front of the receiver.
Rifle receiver
The bolt and liner are placed in the receiver. The box acts as a base for the firing mechanism. It is made in the form of a simple pipe that looks like an extension of the trunk. The receiver is attached to the stock with a tail screw, which is screwed into the rear part (into the “tail”).
There is a window on the outside that is used for inserting cartridges and ejecting cartridges.
Rifle insert
It is located in the receiver and secured with a trigger spring. Created for:
- Directions of the cartridge into the chamber when loading;
- Reflections of cartridges during ejection after a shot;
- Shutter directions when moving forward.
Trigger mechanism
The design of the trigger includes: a trigger, a trigger spring with a stand, a screw and an axis. When the trigger is released from cocking, the spring strut is recessed by the trigger. The trigger is connected by a spring using an axis. The spring is retracted down due to two protrusions on the hook. There is a limit to the movement of the tail, which is provided by a protrusion on the front of the trigger.
The trigger spring ensures that the trigger is cocked and limits the rearward movement of the bolt. It is attached to the receiver with a screw. There is a hole at the rear end through which the axle passes for attachment to the trigger. There are two cuts at the top of the spring: the first is for fixing the hammer in cocking, the second is for limiting the movement of the bolt back.
The trigger guard is attached to the forend with two screws. The trigger passes through a metal spacer with holes under the heels. The hole restricts rearward movement of the trigger.
TOZ-8 sight
The sighting mechanism consists of:
- Aiming block. Used to fix the pin and strengthen the sighting bar spring;
- Sighting bar. Equipped with a mane with a slot used for aiming. The sighting mechanism can be adjusted for shooting at various distances - from 25 to 250 meters. The side edges of the strip are equipped with cutouts for attaching a clamp;
- Clamp;
- Sighting bar spring. Fixes the bar in the required position;
- Front sight.
Gate
The bolt sends the cartridge into the chamber, closes the bore, ejects the cartridge case of the spent charge and is an important element in firing shots. Comprises:
- Combat larva. It is the connecting link of all elements of the shutter. On the right and left there are two grooves for the ejector and sleeve deflector. The larva is equipped with a special cup for placing the ammunition cap. The ejector and reflector sleeve axes are placed in vertical holes. The rammer is located below. The movement of the shutter is limited by a ledge on the rear lower part of the combat cylinder. The stem of the bolt is placed on the stump of the combat larva. Inside it there is a channel for the drummer;
- Ejector. Ejects cartridges from the chamber and receiver using a reflector;
- Sleeve reflector. Fixes the cartridge in the calyx of the larva;
- Bolt. Equipped with a hole through which a pin passes to secure the firing pin with the coupling and the combat cylinder. There are two small and two large cutouts. The large ones are used to pull the trigger back, the small ones to limit the rotation of the stem.
Impact mechanism
The design of the impact mechanism includes:
- Trigger. Designed to install a firing pin on a combat platoon. Attached to the firing pin with threaded holes and a pin;
- Drummer;
- Action spring;
- Clutch. Connects the striker to the combat cylinder;
- Lodge. Connects all parts of the carbine and is responsible for the ease of use of the Toz-8.
Advantages and disadvantages of the TOZ-122 hunting carbine
The carbine is currently the most popular rifled weapon produced by the Tula Arms Plant. Its tactical and technical characteristics, combined with a low price, made this carbine popular not only in Russia, but also abroad. Since the carbine is quite light in weight, it is excellent for walking hunting. The simplicity of the design makes this weapon trouble-free to use.
Article on the topic: Lexus RX 200 t 2022 owner reviews
The only serious drawback (like all domestic carbines and shotguns in this price category) is the very rough processing of the carbine components, and the build quality is not always up to par. Traditionally, piece options are made of much better quality, but their price is much higher. There are two options when purchasing TOZ-122:
- Buy a standard model and modify it yourself;
- Again, buy a standard model and send it to a weapons workshop for modification;
- Buy a custom gun and not have to worry about modifications (although this is far from a fact).
Many hunters call the TOZ-122 a real designer, because the carbine can take a very long time to modify. Undoubtedly, it has many advantages, otherwise it would never have gained such popularity:
- Using wood to make a stock. High-quality weapon steel, which is used for carbine barrels. The whole appearance of the TOZ-122 speaks of the reliability of this gun, although the Tula Arms Plant should pay more attention to the finishing of the weapon and the quality of its assembly. The shape of the carbine does not at all resemble modern carbines. This is a classic “bolt gun” that will appeal to every hunter who is accustomed to using traditional hunting weapons when hunting;
- The simplicity and thoughtfulness of the design turn this carbine into a reliable weapon that works without problems in any climatic conditions;
- Since the design used developments from previous years, the carbine turned out to be very successful. Its accuracy indicators are significantly superior to competitors in this price category;
- The ability to use the carbine not only for hunting, but also for recreational or sport shooting;
- A good optical sight that comes as standard;
- Lightweight TOZ-122.
The disadvantages include:
- Roughness of processing;
- Poor quality of fitting of weapon components to each other;
- The mainsprings are too tight, although on the other hand, this gives them reliability.
As for independent modifications, this is a personal matter for each owner. Most owners limit themselves to filing protruding sharp corners and modifying the stock to suit themselves.
The history of the creation of the Tu-214 aircraft
The first design sketches of the new machine were made at the Tupolev design bureau in 1973; the new unit was supposed to replace the Tu-154 on medium-haul flights. During the design process, many options for the new airliner were developed and discussed. As a result, they created a new wide-body aircraft, which is equipped with three engines.
In the first version of this model, it was planned to create large luggage compartments into which containers of standard sizes could be loaded. Because of this, the new car had two decks, which made it easy to change the size of the passenger compartment and cargo compartment. This was convenient because the number of passengers varies during different seasons of the year.
In the summer of 1981, a decree was issued on the creation of a qualitatively new model of a medium-range passenger aircraft, which should be equipped with three D-90 model engines. New power plants were supposed to reduce fuel costs. At the end of 1982, the assembly of the layout was completed. Unfortunately, this model had no future.
The designers had to abandon this project; they developed a new twin-engine version. A special feature of the new car was that the power plants were mounted under the wings. This was a qualitatively new breakthrough in the Tupolev design bureau, since not a single aircraft model with such an engine mount had been created before.
At the end of 1982, a decision was made by Minister I.S. Silaev on the creation of a new medium-range aircraft, which will be equipped with two economical and at the same time powerful engines of the PS-90A model. As for the engine, it was specially developed and designed by designer P.A. Soloviev. L.A. was appointed chief designer in the development of the Tu-214. Lanovsky. The new model was the first to use the “Diana” system, which was developed at the Tupolev Design Bureau. It provided force calculations of the entire aircraft structure using the finite element method.
Computer technology was involved in the design, which made it possible to optimally think through the entire design of the future machine. New computer-controlled machines were used, which made it possible to produce parts more accurately. To reduce the overall weight of the aircraft, the latest composite materials were used, namely fiberglass and carbon fiber. Ultimately, the amount of composite materials reached 14% of the total weight of the aircraft.
The designers used large sheets for the skin, which made it possible to significantly reduce the number of joints on the fuselage surface
Much attention was paid to soundproofing and thermal insulation of the passenger compartment. The first Tu-214 was built at the Tupolev Design Bureau in Moscow, and began serial production in 1992.
Sights TOZ-122
TOZ-122 hunting carbines have the following sighting devices:
- Open sights, including a two-position rear sight and front sight. There is a graduation on the rear sight that allows you to set it for shooting at both 100 and 300 meters;
- A bracket designed for mounting an optical sight. An interesting feature is that you can use mechanical sights even with the bracket installed;
- Optical sight.
Most owners use an optical sight for shooting, some install more powerful optics.
Disassembly, cleaning and tuning TOZ-122
The carbine is disassembled to clean the weapon or repair it. Since the design is extremely simple, partial disassembly is not difficult:
- First you need to separate the receiver from the stock, for which you need to unscrew only one screw;
- The trigger mechanism is also very easy to remove - just press the release button;
- If you need to replace the front sight, it can also be easily unscrewed.
The partial disassembly procedure is sufficient for routine cleaning of the weapon. In the event of a breakdown, you should completely disassemble the carabiner, but doing this unless absolutely necessary is not recommended.
Cleaning takes place according to the standard scheme using standard cleaning devices. It is necessary to carefully remove powder deposits from the barrel bore and all other visible contaminants on the carbine components.

As for tuning a carbine, this means two scenarios:
- Installation of a more powerful sight, anatomical stock, and so on;
- Complete modification of the carbine on your own or in a specialized workshop for repairing hunting weapons.
Such scenarios can develop either separately from each other or in combination.
Disassembling and assembling the gun
When starting disassembly, you first need to make sure that the gun is not loaded. Check that there are no cartridges in the chamber and magazine. Incomplete disassembly
Clean and lubricate guns in the following order:
- unscrew the cap and remove the forend;
- on the left side of the box, use the rod of the cap to touch the pin securing the body of the trigger mechanism, pull it out as far as it will go and separate the trigger mechanism;
- separate the barrel with the lid from the box, moving it relative to the box forward until it stops and then up;
- move the bolt frame by the handle back until it stops and remove the handle, and then remove the bolt frame with the bolt;
- press the end of the ejector, push the bolt into the bolt frame, lift the lug up to the stop and remove the bolt;
- push the gas chamber back until it stops and separate down: the gas chamber with the piston, the magazine tube with the spring, the magazine spring with the cartridge pushers.
Assembly
produce guns in the following sequence:
- place the spring on the protrusion of the box lid and, squeezing it, insert the magazine tube into the lid window with the protrusion towards the barrel;
- holding the magazine tube, insert a spring with cartridge pushers into it, and put a gas chamber with a piston on the outside;
- move the entire assembly until it stops in the lid and place the gas chamber on the barrel protrusion;
- assemble the bolt with the bolt frame, place them in the cover, aligning the holes in the cover and the bolt frame, insert the handle and push the bolt frame to the forward position;
- connect the box to the barrel, directing the pusher into the recess of the return spring rod;
- install the trigger mechanism, to do this, push the barrel all the way into the box and, having previously cocked the hammer and raised the feeder to the upper position, place its front end into the box window, and point the wedge into the corresponding slot in the box and press the trigger;
- secure the trigger mechanism with a pin. Put on the forend and secure it with a cap.
Upon completion of assembly, check the interaction of the parts and mechanisms of the gun without using cartridges. It is recommended to disassemble and reassemble the remaining components of the gun if absolutely necessary and preferably in a weapons workshop.
During operation of the gun, a gap may appear between the rear end of the box cover and the supporting surface of the box, which can be eliminated by rotating the screw counterclockwise a maximum of three turns. To carry out this adjustment, it is necessary to remove the trigger mechanism, push out the pin and separate the wedge from the trigger mechanism body. Reassemble in reverse order.
Why is it worth taking TOZ-122?
Many Russian hunters choose the TOZ-122, although it has many competitors in this class. Here is a list of the main rivals:
- Soviet carbine "Los" with an integral magazine;
- A modern “Los” carbine, which has a removable magazine;
- “Los” Premier is one of the best modifications of the “Los” carbine, but it also costs significantly more;
- KO-91/30M;
- Mauser 98M caliber .308 wine;
- Carbine "Zastava";
- CZ-550.
Why do most Russian hunters choose the TOZ-122 carbine? You can make a long list of advantages of the carbine from the Tula Arms Plant:
- The most important point is, of course, the price, which is quite low compared to competitors. It's no secret that many hunters, when choosing a weapon, try to choose something of high quality, but at the same time inexpensive;
- A bracket that allows you to shoot a carbine on which an optical sight is mounted using open sights. This feature can come in handy when an animal suddenly jumps up next to the hunter;
- The simplest shutter that works flawlessly. Compared to the constantly dangling bolt of the Los carbine, the operation of the TOZ-122 bolt out of the box is much better;
- Excellently hung barrel, with clear rifling inside. Chrome plating of the barrel bore - no complaints. The muzzle could use some treatment, but for the price the barrel is excellent;
- The magazines that come with the TOZ-122 are very reliable. The magazine feeder and spring are made according to the AK design. Some hunters complain about their bulkiness;
- The safety lock of the TOZ-122 carbine is made the same as on a conventional smoothbore gun. Its disadvantages include the fact that it only locks the trigger;
- The stock is quite flexible, although it can be modified, but even in the “stock” state the carbine fits well in the hands of hunters with different anatomical features;
- Long and smooth trigger stroke;
- Light weight of the carabiner;
- The presence of a reversible rear sight for 100 and 300 meters.
Like most domestic models of hunting weapons, it requires careful filing. A big plus is the fact that very rarely you come across frankly “crooked” specimens.
The TOZ-122 hunting carbine is the most popular carbine of the Tula Arms Plant. Although many point out its outdated appearance and rough execution, this is a reliable working carbine that will not let its owner down in any conditions.

general characteristics
The gun barrel is fixed (but detachable) 711 mm long with a muzzle constriction of 1.0 mm, rigidly connected to the box lid; It can have either a ventilated or a solid rib, as well as interchangeable choke constrictions. The bore and chamber, as well as parts of the bolt, gas engine, trigger and feed mechanisms are chrome-plated. The receiver is made by stamping from an aluminum alloy, which is somewhat alarming. Almost thirty years of use of light alloys in weapons production has shown that steel is still better. The connection of the lid to the box is carried out using special protrusions of the box and a wedge. The bolt is longitudinally sliding, the cartridge is locked in the barrel chamber by means of a lug lug that enters the window of the barrel shank when the bolt returns (under the action of the return spring) to its extreme forward position. The extraction and reflection of the cartridges, in contrast to the MC 21-12, is carried out by the bolt when it moves backward. The hammer-type trigger mechanism is mounted on a separate base (as in the MTs 21-12) and allows only single shots. The safety is non-automatic, push-button type (and not a flag type as in the MTs 21-12), locking the trigger; located in front of the trigger guard. To prevent accidental shots, the firing pin is blocked by a combat stop from inertial puncture of the primer. Tubular magazine, under-barrel; in combination with the gas chamber, piston and spring, it forms what in weapons technology is called a “gas engine”, which unlocks the bolt and retracts it back. An original feature of TOZ-87
is the use of a tubular mechanism body as a gas piston rod.
During the firing process, cartridges are fed into the chamber automatically when the bolt moves to the forward position. The forend is removable and is attached to the body of the gas chamber with a cap (as in MTs 21-12). Buttstock with pistol neck and rubber butt pad. The stock and fore-end are made of walnut or beech wood. The gun frame is anodized bronze. Compared to the MC 21-12, the TOZ-87
has a reduced weight (by almost 0.5 kg) and recoil force (within 20-25%).
