Tula Legend: review of the TOZ-34 double-barreled shotgun

History of creation

The development of the TOZ-34 double-barreled shotgun began in 1964 by a young design engineer N.I. Koryakov, who until that moment had not headed any serious projects. Surprisingly, the model, released in 1965, was able to immediately win the attention of hunters, and also received a gold medal while participating in competitions in Lipetsk. The success was so stunning that the Tula plant decided not to delay the production of individual and collector's versions, so already in 1968 the rich were able to treat themselves to the first guns with engraving and inserts made of precious metals.

In parallel with the development of souvenir weapons, Tula engineers were also modernizing the existing model. The first upgrade for a successful project was the TOZ-34E model, in which cartridges were ejected using a special mechanism - an ejector. The size of the barrels has also undergone modernization. Until 1969, the thirty-four was produced only in 12 gauge - the most universal option for most commercial hunters. However, highly specialized guns (from 16 to 32 caliber) soon began to appear on the market.

Design

One of the main prides of PJSC Tula Arms Plant is the design of the TOZ-34 shotgun, which is distinguished by its simplicity and reliability. The model turned out to be not only high-quality, but also incredibly practical. Compared to competitors (with the same IZH-27), the weapon was much lighter, but at the same time had less windage and recoil. These and many other qualities were achieved through the following parts.

Trunks

The barrels of the TOZ-34 shotgun are fastened together using an inter-barrel breech strip, as well as a coupling. In the upper part there is a sighting bar with a ventilated mesh, which reduces the windage of the weapon significantly. The channels of the barrels and the chamber are chrome-plated, which increases the durability of the weapon when using cartridges with an increased amount of gunpowder. The outside is coated with nickel to protect the model from corrosion. Well, to make the trunks look beautiful, blackening is used. A steel front sight is used as a standard sighting device, which in new versions is equipped with a fiber-optic thread (improves the aiming process in twilight).

Locking system

The design of the TOZ-34 model uses a unique barrel locking system consisting of ring hinges. The main purpose of the mechanism is to reduce to zero the probability of an accidental shot when the weapon is not completely closed. Unlike the system used in IZHMEKHA models (hook + hinges), the ring structure is considered more reliable, although expensive. The gun is also equipped with a special switch flag, which allows the owner to disable the locking mechanism if necessary (for example, if it is necessary to release only one spent cartridge case from the chamber).

USM

The trigger mechanism of the TOZ-34 double-barreled shotgun is made in a traditional (for vertical) character. Its main feature is that it is placed on a separate base, distant from the triggers. Thanks to this system, a weapon with the safety on will not fire, even if the trigger is hit with a heavy hammer.

A distinctive feature of USM TOZ-34 is considered to be unusual springs, which most closely resemble horseshoes. Many hunters agree that this is one of the weakest gun systems. Over time, the springs begin to stretch too much and fail. However, it should be noted that it is precisely this system that gives the trigger mechanism smooth operation.

Butt

Depending on which version of the TOZ-34 the hunter purchased, the butt of the weapon can be made of birch, beech or walnut. But in all cases the neck has a pistol shape, which is distinguished not only by good ergonomics, but also by beauty. The back of the butt can be equipped with a rubber or plastic butt plate, which serves to absorb recoil. In the piece and collector's versions, the stock is made of more expensive types of wood.

Another weakness of the TOZ-34 gun is the junction of the stock and the block. Most hunters had the same problem when using the model - a crack appeared at the junction of the wooden part and the metal part, which over time led to the butt splitting. Although in fairness it is worth noting that hunters do not always use cartridges with a standard load of gunpowder, which leads to an increase in shot power.

Design flaws

We can conclude that the design of the TOZ-34 as a whole is very good, but it has two significant drawbacks:

  • weak springs of the trigger mechanism;
  • poor-quality connection of the butt to the metal.

It is almost impossible to cope with these shortcomings at home. So you will have to change the springs from time to time and monitor the amount of gunpowder in the cartridges.

Tuning

Quite often, after purchasing a TOZ-34 gun, owners resort to the tuning procedure in order to improve the existing tactical and technical characteristics, get rid of some shortcomings, and also minimize the likelihood of problems occurring in the future. Here is a small list of modifications that are worth adopting:

  1. Grinding the barrel coupling eliminates the possibility of lateral wobble.
  2. By dulling the sharp edges of the receiver, the coupling will no longer leave scratches.
  3. Grinding the trigger mechanism - the trigger becomes smooth and even.
  4. Sawing out the cheek pads in the buttstock improves the ergonomics of the weapon.
  5. The small factory front sight is replaced with a large one for easier aiming.
  6. Wooden parts are impregnated with stain to increase service life.

You can also modify the TOZ-34 using various “body kits” that are installed on the sighting bar or receiver. However, it is worth remembering that although such devices simplify the process of using a gun, they also increase its weight. And the cost of collimators and under-barrel flashlights can hardly be called low.

How to install a modern collimator on a Soviet TOZ-34 shotgun?

This is a question asked by many hunters who often hunt at dusk. And in the daytime, a collimator can be a good help, especially if the shooter has solid skill in handling such optics.

I have already

I have repeatedly written
about the line of products under the ETMI brand
.
These are adapter brackets made in Izhevsk, designed for installing optics on almost any type of smooth-bore hunting weapon. I ordered all tested brackets since 2015 from the online store toparsenal.ru (Top Arsenal)

ETMI-025 TOZ-34

This time

I decided to install the P1x20M VOMZ collimator sight on the Soviet TOZ-34 gun. I’ll make a reservation right away that this trick won’t work with early “tubes” - they have strips without ventilated holes. Namely, it is through these holes that the ETMI-025 TOZ-34 bracket is installed.

Adapter bracket ETMI-025 TOZ-34, installation on the TOZ-34 gun

For a regular TOZ-34

with a ventilated aiming rib, the ETMI-025 TOZ-34 bracket usually fits without problems. Usually does not mean always, because... There has never been a standard for the size of the slots in the TOZ-34 sighting strips. I just had that rare case when the mounting “legs” of the bracket had to be sharpened a little with a drill. It took a couple of minutes, technically everything is simple.

The adapter bracket ETMI-025 TOZ-34 allows you to shoot at the sighting bar of the gun without any problems

Included in delivery

The ETMI-025 TOZ-34 bracket includes the adapter itself, which is made of steel, consists of two halves and a set of screws. A definite plus for the manufacturer for completing the set with a screwdriver, hex keys and spare screws.

Using ETMI-025 TOZ-34, a collimator sight R1x20M manufactured by VOMZ was installed on the TOZ-34 gun

On the aiming bar

The rifle bracket ETMI-025 TOZ-34 stands rigidly, low and looks very harmonious. With the collimator removed, you can shoot through the bracket; it can even facilitate rapid shooting. Simply put, you don't have to remove it; it can live on your gun. If you need a sight, install it, if you don’t need it, take it off.

Test firing

showed that the ETMI-025 TOZ-34 bracket can be used to install collimator sights of any type and any size. But, given the fact that the sighting bar on the TOZ-34 is soldered with soft solder of the POS-40 type, I will prefer to use a lightweight and compact collimator of the R1x20M VOMZ type.

Using ETMI-025 TOZ-34, a fairly large collimator sight R1x42 manufactured by VOMZ was installed on the TOZ-34 gun

Like other products

of the ETMI family, the ETMI-025 TOZ-34 bracket showed its best side. The adapter is made well, it is steel. The fastening screws, despite their miniature size, securely attach the bracket to the weapon. When removing and subsequently installing the optics, the point of impact remains unchanged. What I especially like is that installing a mount on a classic shotgun does not require metal work on the weapon itself.

Advantages and disadvantages

The TOZ-34 shotgun has many advantages, thanks to which many Russian hunters purchase it. The list of undeniable advantages is headed by the following parameters:

  1. High accuracy of combat. This is ensured by a smooth transition of the chamber to the barrel channel (from 18.7 to 18.5 mm). However, this feature will only be effective if you use a cartridge with a small or standard load of shot.
  2. Light weight. The weight of the TOZ-34 weapon when unloaded is from 3.1 to 3.2 kg (depending on the caliber). This is almost 1 kg less than its main competitor IZH-27. Thanks to this, the hunter can make more movements with a weapon on his back.
  3. Good balance. After a shot, the weapon does not deviate to the side, like the same horizontal guns, and at the moment of aiming the barrel is practically stationary. This increases the effectiveness of combat, especially at long distances.
  4. Two triggers. This system allows you to fire a shot from the second barrel much faster, because there is no need to switch the firing pin using a special flag. At the same time, different ammunition can be loaded in different barrels.
  5. Appearance. No matter what anyone says, hunting with a beautiful gun is much more enjoyable. In this regard, the TOZ-34 has practically no competitors, because its barrels are chrome-plated and blackened, and the butt is made of expensive wood.

But still, every gun has not only positive aspects, but also negative ones. And, despite the fact that many hunters consider the TOZ-34 a legendary double-barreled shotgun, they also continue to complain about some shortcomings:

  1. The gun cannot withstand shooting with powerful cartridges. This quickly causes the barrels to wear out, and cracks begin to appear on the stock, which eventually lead to splitting. So if a hunter values the health of his gun, he will have to give up experimenting with powder loads, especially in magnum-type cartridges.
  2. Sooner or later you will have to replace the USM springs. The reliability of these elements is approximately two times lower than that of a standard trigger mechanism with twisted parts. And given that it is not always possible to notice stretching with the naked eye, the springs simply burst at the most inopportune moment.
  3. Low build quality for samples produced between 1990 and 2000. Earlier versions developed in the USSR, although they are older, still do not have such a high percentage of defects. Everything is also fine with the new versions, but still, when buying a gun (especially a used one), you should pay attention not to the condition of the main elements.

Double-barreled shotgun TOZ-34 and a hunting trophy
Is TOZ-34 worth the money (from 18 to 22 thousand rubles)? Without a doubt. After all, despite the fact that the model is not without its shortcomings, they are all designed taking into account what competing companies can offer. Three minuses against at least five pluses is a good result, especially for a gun that has a 7,000-shot warranty.

TOZ-34 - subjective notes

This gun served me faithfully both in short weekend excursions and in long hunting trips “throughout the north”, in which I spent all my vacations. I am not going to argue with Vladimir and do not pretend to be objective, but will simply talk about my own experience.

CHOOSING A GUN

In the eighties, the choice was small: IZH-58, trigger gun, semi-automatic MTs21 and two vertical guns IZH-27 and TOZ-34. True, there were also “Sauers”, “Merkels” and other “Zimsons” in the second-hand shop in the passage of the Straw Lodge, but at that time I was under the influence of articles from “Hunting and Hunting Management”, the authors of which claimed that these guns, popular in the past , have already outlived their usefulness and are inferior to the latest models of domestic shotguns with vertically paired barrels, ventilated slats, ejectors and - lo and behold! - rubber butt pads.

So I didn’t consider both domestic and imported horizontals as an option. The semi-automatic was too heavy, complicated and, according to numerous reviews, unreliable during long journeys in the taiga. In addition, the single-barrel, multi-loader did not allow you to quickly select the required cartridge for a shot. This consideration turned out to be quite justified: when hunting by feather, I kept a “seven” in the lower trunk for an offhand shot at a hazel grouse that unexpectedly took off, and in the upper trunk a “three” for a capercaillie. I have never changed this order and therefore have never made a mistake. By the way, later, when hunting with another gun, which had one release for two barrels, I never learned to use the shot sequence switch instantly, without thinking. Therefore, in my opinion, the often touted shotguns with a single trigger may be good for bench shooting, but for hunting such a device is not an obvious advantage.

So all that remained was to choose between the Izhevsk and Tula verticals. Vladimir writes that they are “surprisingly similar,” which really surprised me. In fact, they have almost nothing in common. The block and lock of the TOZ-34 are original, they are patented and have nothing in common with any other gun. This design made it possible to significantly reduce the height of the barrel block and forearm compared to the IZH-27, reduce weight, reduce the dimensions of the gun and make its contours more graceful, as it seemed to me then. What was significant for me was that the weight of the IZh according to the technical passport was 3.4 kg, the TOZ-34 weighed 3.1–3.2 kg, and for the “piece” ones the weight was even reduced to 3.0 kg. Indeed, my gun (3.1 kg), when raised to the shoulder, clearly outperformed the “Izhas” of my comrades. In addition, Izhevsk guns were scared away by the bad reputation of the new standard then adopted in Izhevsk, which narrowed the bore of the 12 gauge to 18.2 mm instead of the usual 18.5–18.7 mm. A too close and short transition from the chamber to the barrel was blamed for excess pressure in the first phase of the shot, which led to increased deformation of the shot, and, consequently, to a deterioration in the parameters of the shot and “evil” recoil. Indeed, one of my friends, the owner of IZH-58, had a chronic hematoma on his shoulder and cheekbone, and the fingers of his right hand were always bandaged. Maybe not all Izhevkas were like this, but I didn’t want to tempt fate.

ABOUT STRENGTH AND COMBAT SPRINGS

The unusual design of the TOZ-34 gave rise to a lot of gossip, most of which had no basis in reality. For example, this design was accused of being flimsy and, of course, not withstanding the same load as the “classic”. “This is a Browning,” friends said about the IZH-27, “it’s been time-tested, but the “tulka” is yours, what is it? Can these semi-circular guides provide reliable locking? They will wear out in a couple of years!” And so on. However, these “arguments” were due to a simple misunderstanding of the TOZ-34 design, in which the mentioned guides do not carry any power load, and the real locking element of the lock is essentially the same as in IZH-27, IZH-58 and other “classics”, only it has the shape not of a usual hook, but of a rectangular protrusion that fits into the corresponding cutout in the block. The working surface of this locking element is larger in area than that of most other shotguns, so it provides a strong and reliable locking and is even less subject to wear than conventional hooks.

Nevertheless, the mistrust in the strength of the gun was still justified. Only his weakness was not in the lock, which everyone was pointing at, but nearby - in the connection of the block with the stock. Almost all TOZ-34s quickly develop a crack in the neck of the stock, and if the defect is not corrected, the stock will eventually split. This is a clear design flaw, but it remained uncorrected, despite Vladimir’s assertion that the gun was constantly being improved. With each shot, the steel wedge of the block hits the V-shaped cut of the stock, wedging it, which inevitably leads to the appearance of a crack. Probably, it was possible to give the shank of the block with the impact mechanism a frame shape and connect this frame to the stock with a coupling bolt, like in the same IZH-27 or TOZ-25.

Another talk of the town when discussing the merits were the mainsprings: in the TOZ-34 they are unlike any other. Critics generally accused them of being weak and unreliable. But contrary to this popular belief, over many years (and this is several thousand shots), my gun has never misfired. But one day the spring simply burst and had to be replaced. I don’t think that making it yourself is as easy as Vladimir writes, but branded springs for TOZ-34 were sold in almost all stores and were inexpensive, so I always carried spare ones with me. And you can actually make mainsprings yourself from steel wire, but for another Tula model - TOZ-25, which appeared almost simultaneously with TOZ-34, but did not last long in the production program of the Tula plant. It seems that in the 60s the factory was set up to produce guns that could be repaired by any DIYer. The classic leaf mainspring is one of the most difficult parts to manufacture, so the simplified wire version proposed by the Tula plant was not so bad at all.

The main thing is that these unprepossessing springs cope perfectly with the toughest domestic capsules, which sets them apart from many competitors, both domestic and foreign. For example, the TOZ-34 was replaced by the Italian Marocci sideflint. He's good for everyone, but domestic cartridges are too tough for him. Replacing the original coil springs with tighter ones from the IZH-27 improved the situation, but did not completely correct it: somewhere on every 20th round the lower barrel snaps. This is a disease of most sideflints, including our dear IZH-27. Therefore, I had to look for a replacement and “Marocci”, which I now use only with imported cartridges. By the way, I found a replacement precisely among Tula guns with mainsprings of an unconventional design. This is a model TOZ-25 16 caliber in a gift version, produced in 1967. One can only regret the refusal of the Tula gunsmiths from this model.

MYTHS AND REALITY

The thinner silhouette, which once seemed more “elegant” compared to other domestic verticals, does not seem so at all when compared with the foreign sideflints that have appeared among many hunters. The rectilinear angular block TOZ-34 with flat metal surfaces that do not smoothly turn into wood, as is customary, but break off with a ledge, does not lend itself to “grace.”

The gun does not make a solid impression; it seems that the barrels are simply stuck into the block. And on almost all the TOZ-34s that I saw, there were burrs on the forend in the place where the wood comes into contact with the metal of the block when disassembling the gun. It would probably be easy to correct this defect by slightly changing the shape of the forend, but the manufacturer did not bother to do this in three decades. In general, it’s strange that Vladimir claims that they worked on improving the gun for a long time. I know of the only modification that affected the very first releases of this model, which seemed to simplify incomplete disassembly.

I didn’t have the chance to hold a gun from the first releases in my hands, so I can’t judge how much more convenient the new design is than the old one. But the myth created by ill-wishers about the supposedly special complexity of these operations is unfounded: TOZ-34 is assembled and disassembled very easily, both in the dark and by touch. This is nothing more than the conservatism of our hunters, who in those days had never seen any other schemes except those of their native trigger guns and the Sauers, and therefore greeted any novelty with distrust.

Vladimir writes about “great variety” in barrel drills and calibers, but in reality this never happened. The calibers of the barrels were different, but they were all mounted on a 12-gauge block with all the ensuing consequences: there is no grace, and they all weigh like a 12-gauge. Therefore, strictly speaking, it is impossible to consider them 20 or 28 caliber guns. This is a trick by the manufacturer, for reporting purposes, nothing more. Who and why might need a 20-gauge shotgun and, even more so, a 28-gauge shotgun, if it weighs more than 12-gauge shotguns and is poorly balanced? After all, the beauty of small calibers is in their small dimensions and weight.

The variety of drill holes is also a myth: all the barrels of Tula guns are drilled to a full choke, contrary to what is written in the technical passport. I measured the barrels of my gun with special tools: the upper barrel had a narrowing of 1 mm, and the lower one 0.9, which is practically the same. Many owners gave me similar data. The same drilling of the barrels turned out to be on my other Tula gun - TOZ-25: two full chokes, although the passport listed “pay - choke”. It is widely believed that the higher the accuracy, the better the quality of the shotgun. In fact, this is a misconception: different conditions require different accuracy. That's why there are barrels with different muzzle devices. And for an objective assessment of the barrel engagement, the accuracy criterion should be used in conjunction with other indicators - such as the uniformity of the shot, condensation towards the center, sharpness, and consistency of the engagement. Alas, we do not find these indicators in the technical data sheets of domestic shotguns. It is probably more difficult to falsify these indicators. In order to evaluate the payout as “excellent” in terms of accuracy, it is enough to slip a choke in its place. But how can you manipulate the uniformity of the shot scree? According to this indicator, my “thirty-four” was, alas, far from even being rated “satisfactory”.

Regarding the “modernity” of the vertical, over time I realized that this is absolute nonsense. The barrel fires, but how the two barrels are connected - in a vertical or horizontal plane - has absolutely no significance for the quality of combat and, in general, for the practical use of weapons in hunting. The fashion for sideflints began with clay pigeon shooting. They say that from a side flint, a repeated aimed shot can be fired faster - due to the fact that the axis of its barrels coincides with the aiming lines and the barrels do not deviate slightly to the side due to recoil, as in a horizontal shot. Probably, in the final of the Olympic tournament on the trench stand, a gain of hundredths of a second can have some significance. But not while hunting. And in sports shooting, I think, the decisive factor in the approval of side flints was not these scholastic theorizing, but manufacturability: with machine serial processing, side flints can be made more durable than horizontal, and at lower costs, and this is very important for sports shooting essential.

While I was hunting with a husky in the “north”, where I needed a compact shot at the maximum distance at a capercaillie, which there was no way to get close to, the TOZ-34 fight suited me. But as soon as I started hunting with cops, problems began. For short-range shooting, the gun shot too closely, with uneven scree, the balance of the gun was shifted forward, with a center of gravity 75 mm from the breech end of the barrels, and for offhand shooting it would have been 50–55 mm. And the gun no longer seemed elegant to me for a long time. Everything needed to be changed. But that is another story.

Thus, the TOZ-34 shotgun is superior to competitors in most parameters, with the exception of combat power, as well as accuracy using various cartridges. And this despite the fact that the model is over 50 years old!

Versions and modifications

The TOZ-34 shotgun has 5 main modification options, which are tailored to the individual needs of different categories of potential buyers. The list below provides a brief description for each:

  1. TOZ-34-M is one of the first modifications produced by the Tula Arms Plant. At the request of many hunters, weapons began to be equipped with a special dovetail bracket designed for mounting optics.
  2. TOZ-34-E is a modification with an automatic ejector for spent cartridges from the chamber. This mechanism will be useful for those hunters who live in regions with cold climates, because often the cartridges simply freeze to the chamber.
  3. TOZ-34-R is a version of the standard shotgun that has a butt plate on the butt made of rubber. Such weapons absorb inertia much better at the moment of firing, which is why the recoil is practically not felt.
  4. TOZ-34-1 is a single-barrel version of the gun, available in 12, 16 and 20 calibers. Suitable for connoisseurs of classics, as well as teenagers, women and hunters of thin build, because the weight of the gun has been reduced to 2.4 kilograms.
  5. TOZ-34-SH (or “3SH”, “U”, “2U”, “S” and “O”) is a one-piece gun, distinguished by an increased warranty period, as well as the presence of an engraving in the form of animals and birds on the receiver. Souvenir samples may also contain silver and gold inserts.

Souvenir gun TOZ-34 with engraving
Well, don’t forget about mixed modifications, which include developments from different versions. For example, the TOZ-34ER model has a built-in ejector and also boasts a rubber backplate.

Disassembly, assembly and maintenance

TOZ-34 requires regular cleaning and lubrication of the barrels. However, before you begin the maintenance procedure, you will first have to partially disassemble the model. For information on how to disassemble a weapon, read the instructions:

  1. Set the safety button to its extreme position.
  2. We release the triggers, after which we close the barrels.
  3. Turn the locking flag all the way to the right.
  4. Using the rotation method, we separate the barrel from the receiver.
  5. Return the locking lever to the reverse position.

After this, you can begin the cleaning procedure. Beginners are advised to adhere to a certain algorithm of actions:

  1. We clean the barrel from leaded deposits using a bronze brush.
  2. We soak a piece of rags or cotton wool in kerosene and string it onto a cleaning rod.
  3. We clean the barrel with a rag to remove old oil.
  4. We thoroughly wash the metal channel with a soap solution.
  5. Dry the barrel in a warm room or wipe it with a piece of cloth.
  6. Lubricate the chrome surface with gun oil.

After this, all that remains is to assemble the weapon, following the algorithm already described, but in reverse order. The maintenance procedure must be repeated after each use of the gun, because even from 1 shot the oil barrel becomes covered with soot.

Features of hunting with TOZ-34

In the eyes of its owners, TOZ-34 is the embodiment of high accuracy and reliability. However, in order for the weapon to serve faithfully, and for the fishery to always bring greater production, the owner must adhere to certain recommendations:

  1. Select the right ammunition for different types of game. Sub-caliber bullets, for example, 5.6 mm, are well suited for hunting fur-bearing animals. It is best to kill feathered and small game with shot numbers from 7 to 0. But a large predator can only be killed with magnum-type cartridges (recommended for 12 gauge).
  2. Reload your weapon correctly, especially if it has an ejector. At the moment of breaking, the chamber should look up and slightly to the side. In this case, the gun must be kept away from the face, otherwise a spent cartridge case may cause injury. When closing the bolt, be sure to push the barrel all the way down.
  3. Follow the basic rules for carrying weapons. Since the TOZ-34 is a fairly light model, many hunters sometimes forget that they have a loaded gun weighing on their back. Remember that every blow and knock slightly shortens the life of the weapon, even if the mechanical impact was applied to the metal part.

TOZ-34 is one of the best shotguns for most hunters. Despite the fact that the model is more than half a century old, and its cost is in the region of only 20 thousand, the weapon can give the potential buyer a lot that competitors cannot offer. And if the hunter treats his comrade with care (cleans and lubricates in a timely manner, changes spare parts), he will definitely serve him faithfully for many years.

What is the TOZ-34 shotgun suitable for?

The TOZ-34 is a typical workhorse, a gun equally suitable for any hunting. It's light enough for trail hunting, has a good punch for fly hunting, and an accurate second shot, making it an excellent sporting shotgun. Some hunters successfully catch ungulates with them, including large ones.

There is one feature that gave the TOZ-34 the glory of a gun “for experienced hunters”: the muzzle constriction of the lower barrel is 0.9 mm, the upper one is 1.1-1.2 mm. These values differ from the “chok-poluchok” standard indicated in the passport, and give the gun accuracy higher than expected. Of course, hitting the target with a denser sheaf is more difficult, especially if you are used to a different nature of the scree.

But this problem, contrary to opinion, haunts experienced hunters who have shot hundreds of shots from standard narrowings, but beginners get used to the unusual scree right away.
