The USAS-12 smoothbore automatic shotgun was developed by American engineers in the 80s of the last century. The development was led by John Trevor, who was listed as an engineer at the small arms company Gilbert Equipment Co. According to John, when developing the USAS-12, he was inspired by the work and design thought of Maxwell Atchisson and his development - the iconic AA-12 high-velocity automatic shotgun.
In those years, the weapons company Gilbert Equipment could not provide the developer with large production capacities, so John Trevor turned to other manufacturers to possibly set up mass production. He managed to come to an agreement with a company from South Korea, Daewoo Precision Industries, which agreed to carry out full development and preparation for production of serial batches of weapons.
However, Korean engineers were also allowed into the development process and made some of their own changes to the design of the shotgun. After which the USAS-12 was ready for mass production, and by the middle of the next decade, 30 thousand finished copies had already been produced, distributed mainly to the military and police structures of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
The successful launch of mass production encouraged Gilbert Equipment Co to try to import self-loading versions of the shotgun into the United States for sale on the civilian weapons market. The actions were unsuccessful, and the BATF (U.S. Government Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) banned the sale to citizens. However, in the late 1990s, RAMO Defense launched production in the USA. The assembly was carried out from parts imported from South Korea.
General description of the USAS-12 shotgun
The USAS-12 rapid-firing automatic shotgun is a very heavy and massive weapon, but a lighter weapon with such characteristics would simply be uncontrollable under automatic fire with powerful 12-gauge cartridges.
The USAS-12 shotgun is considered a fairly accurate and easy to control weapon, probably primarily due to its significant mass (reducing felt recoil) and the magazine located near the weapon's center of gravity.
The shotgun was produced in two variations: automatic and self-loading. The second type is suitable for the civilian weapons market, and the first for law enforcement agencies. Detachable magazines are also found in different modifications: single-row box with 10 rounds and disk with 20 rounds.
Operating countries
- Colombia[1][2][3]
- Dominican Republic
- Philippines[4][5]
- Republic of Korea[6]
- Brazil: in service with the special forces of the Navy GRUMEC[en] and special forces battalions of the ground forces[7]
Other Applications
- Australian terrorist Martin Bryant, who carried out the Port Arthur massacre, had many firearms confiscated during his arrest, including a USAS-12, for which he allegedly paid 3 thousand Australian dollars, but never used.
- One of the samples was seen in service with the Karen National Liberation Army[8].
Operating principle
The USAS-12 shotgun operates using a gas-operated reloading system. When you press the trigger, the firing pin hits the cartridge and it flies out of the barrel. Some of the powder gases enter the gas chamber (at the top of the gun) through holes in the barrel, which push the gas piston. The bolt moves back, the cartridge case flies out through the side window. The bolt, under the action of a return spring in the butt, returns to its place, engaging a new cartridge.

Design Features
The Daewoo USAS-12 automatic shotgun uses automation based on a gas engine, with a gas chamber located above the barrel. Locking is accomplished by turning the bolt.
A distinctive feature of the USAS-12 design is the very long recoil of the bolt group (after each shot, the bolt group rolls far behind the magazine, into the hollow butt).
This scheme is designed to reduce the rate of fire in automatic mode, as well as reduce the peak recoil of the weapon, that is, to make shooting from the weapon more comfortable and controllable.
Another feature of the USAS-12 is its complete “two-sidedness.” Windows for ejecting spent cartridges are made on both sides of the receiver and are closed with spring-loaded covers. The choice of the side on which the sleeve will be ejected is carried out by rearranging the ejector.
Cutouts for the cocking handle are also made on both sides of the weapon on the forend, and the handle can be rearranged to either side. The USAS-12 is fed ammunition from long 10-round box magazines or from 20-round drum magazines. The fire modes of the combat version are automatic (bursts) and single, the “civilian” version is only single. The fire mode switch fuse is designed like an M16 rifle.
Sighting devices - a front sight in a muzzle on a gas chamber and a reversible adjustable rear sight hidden in the rear part of the integral handle for carrying the weapon. The stock is awkward, plastic, and due to the design features described above cannot be made foldable without significant modifications to the entire system.
The USAS-12 automatic shotgun consists of several parts:
- frame;
- removable clip;
- butt;
- carrying handle.
The clip holds 20 rounds of 12 gauge, which is equivalent to 18.5 mm. If desired, the standard front sight can be replaced with any other: collimator, holographic and optical, which is ideal for long-range shooting.
Made with good quality
At first glance, this Marocchi SI 12 semi-automatic is of good quality.
The bright blue finish with a chrome-plated slide and other components helps to attract attention. The inertia mechanism is very similar to that of Benelli
The trigger plate is made of high quality plastic, like most modern semi-automatics. One of the annoying points is the “golden chickens” (pheasants) engraved on the black side wall of the receiver. Just ignore it!
The model we tested has a 28-inch barrel with five long 90mm interchangeable chokes. The bore is 18.5 mm with a 7.62 cm chamber. Other barrel lengths are available: 24, 26, 28 and 30 inches. The Marocchi SI 12 barrel has a ventilated rib with a diameter of 7 mm with a transverse notch to reduce glare
A dovetail groove made in the upper part of the receiver allows the installation of an optical or collimator sight, although this is more important for the European market, where shooting bullets is quite widespread
The quality of fitting of wooden and metal parts is at a good level, the stock is varnished.
There's not much to say about the lodge.
There is nothing special to say about the stock of this gun, made of grade 1 wood, other than the general correctness of the chosen shape. The first thing I noticed when mounting the gun was that the length of the stock (37.14 cm on center) was quite comfortable. The stock has a 5.7cm curvature at the buttplate, 3.49cm at the comb, and a 4.76mm drop – all dimensions are quite reasonable. They will definitely allow you to look at the rib rather than the back of the receiver, which is a problem with many semi-autos. Marocchi offers different types of wood, as well as a plastic version, which is very practical in our climate.
The stock shape is quite traditional, as opposed to a full pistol grip. I found it a bit too large, but I think it will suit most shooters, especially those with large hands. The forend is thin, “beaver tail” shaped; has one notch on each side, allowing you to hold it comfortably and have good control of the weapon. The fitting of metal and wooden parts is done with high quality, the stock is varnished. The notch is laser-etched and will definitely prevent your gun from slipping out of your hands.
Good quality semi-automatic.
Marocchi SI 12 on test
I was joined for this test by a good friend of mine who is a skeet shooting instructor.
For the test, I decided to use the Hull High Pheasant cartridge with a 30 gram load, which is pleasant and does not have much recoil. But for the inertial system this was a real test. In my experience, most inertial semi-automatic machines require a weight of at least 32 grams for normal operation of the system. Handing the gun over to my friend, I was impressed by the convenient size and the fact that when inserted, it felt just like a double-barreled shotgun. We first shot at simple straight targets to get used to the weapon. I don't use semi-automatics often, but I found this gun to be quite handy.
The trigger has a fairly long free play, but when shooting offhand you won't notice it. At first, the mechanism worked well with such a weak cartridge, but when we tried to fire two quick shots, the spent cartridge case got stuck. I was not surprised; the cartridge used, as I already mentioned, had a small charge and weak recoil.
Skeet shooting with Marocchi SI 12.
The layout of the safety, magazine release and bolt release button is similar to the Benelli 828U and worked flawlessly in the test. After shooting, we noted the simplicity and ease of disassembling the Marocchi SI 12 for cleaning. Like most semi-automatic rifles, to remove the mechanism, you just need to knock out one pin - and the gun can be completely cleaned.
At the end I asked my friend: “Would you buy a gun like this?” He replied: “If the price is about $1150, then yes!”
Conclusion
I would pay close attention to the Marocchi SI 12 inertial semi-automatic, since the next good model costs $570 more

Advantages and disadvantages of USAS-12
The obvious advantages of the Daewoo USAS-12 include its long firing range: the shooting distance is approximately 40 meters. Users note the high reload speed, accuracy when firing from the hip, and a large clip; the 12 gauge is effective at close ranges. If the enemy is shot at a distance of less than 15 meters, the chance of retaliatory action tends to zero. Professional law enforcement officers highlight the lack of deviation of bullets from the trajectory. This is especially useful when shooting through dense objects: doors, windows, walls. City police officers use buckshot or plastic bullets in operations to neutralize criminals. USAS 12 copes with these tasks. The shotgun supports a variety of types of cartridges: this includes shaped charge ammunition, carbide bullets and rubber bullets.
The advantages are achieved due to the principle of operation of the weapon, thanks to the hollow butt and a unique gas exhaust system. The list of advantages includes a very simple switching of fire modes, which requires minimal effort from the user. The USAS-12 shotgun can be easily camouflaged with airbrushing or covered with a rag when shooting prone in wooded and grassy areas. With such camouflage, the weapon in your hands is not visible, and its effectiveness at long distances will allow you to fight back.
Advantages of the USAS-12 shotgun:
- presence of automatic release;
- large clip for 20 rounds;
- high firing range;
- good damage;
- high shooting accuracy.
- 2 modification slots;
- heavy weight, reducing recoil;
- due to the extraction of cartridges and manual installation of the cocking handle, the gun is convenient for both right-handers and left-handers;
- The store is conveniently located near the center of gravity of the weapon.
The disadvantages are the average rate of fire, the massiveness and volume of the gun. The heavy weight is also not attractive: a fully loaded gun weighs about 7 kg. It is unknown whether there are weapons on the military market now.
Daewoo USAS-12 is produced in small batches. For military structures, a gun is inferior in technical characteristics to an automatic rifle; gun lovers do not take it seriously.

Application area.
Data on the combat use of the shotgun is not available, but it can be assumed that the military and police special forces were attracted to the following advantages of the USAS-12 in a variety of operations:
- Maximum density of fire against a close but poorly visible enemy in the case of using buckshot (thickets and other line-of-sight obstacles).
- There is almost complete absence of deflection of a 12-gauge bullet from the trajectory by dense vegetation, thin doors and walls, in contrast to high-speed small-caliber bullets with a high lateral load, such as in 5.56x45 and 5.45x39 ammunition.
- An unprecedentedly high stopping effect of a charge from a 12-gauge cartridge, both soft lead bullets and buckshot, which is important during close combat - after hitting the enemy, the possibility of him taking retaliatory actions tends to zero.
- In addition to the use of bullets and buckshot to hit living targets or to open locked doors, in cities it is important to use plastic or rubber bullets and buckshot with traumatic effects, which makes smooth-bore weapons popular during police operations, since law enforcement agencies, due to their specific nature, are forced to use small arms weapons where the military would use a grenade or something even more serious.
- Carbide bullets are capable of disabling a car engine without causing harm to passengers, which may be necessary in certain circumstances (for example, a punctured tire can cause the car to crash and passengers may be injured).
- This weapon can use special cumulative ammunition that can penetrate, for example, armored doors.
The USAS-12 automatic shotgun was mass-produced in only two modifications: an automatic version and a self-loading one for the civilian weapons market. A small number called WM-12 was produced by the American company Ameetec Arms LLC. The model from this manufacturer was self-loading; instead of a carrying handle and sighting devices, it had a Picatinny rail. The purpose of releasing the modification was to obtain the opportunity to sell the gun to the civilian population of the United States, which the original version, even the self-loading one, does not have now.
Detachable magazines for the USAS-12 are also available in two types: single-row box magazine for 10 rounds and disc magazine for 20 rounds 12x70. There are mentions of a box magazine with 12 rounds and a drum magazine with 28 rounds.
The negative and positive qualities of a gun come from the same properties.
- Firstly, it's weight. Loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition, the USAS-12 will pull all of seven kilograms, but on the other hand, from a gun with a small mass, aimed shooting in full automatic mode with a 12-gauge would be impossible.
- Secondly, the area of application in which the effectiveness of this combat shotgun is higher than that of a conventional automatic rifle is too narrow (which is related to the range of aimed fire and combat accuracy), and in other cases such a large and heavy gun will be an outright burden.
Today, these weapons are produced in small batches. Currently, there is no information about the status of the USAS-12 in service with any of the armies of the world, and weapon lovers most often consider it as a curiosity.
Media fame
The USAS-12 shotgun can be found in the following games:
- Present in the game Warface, presented with a drum magazine for 20 rounds.
- Present in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. In the game it is presented in a semi-automatic version with a box magazine for 10 rounds.
- In Battlefield: Bad Company 2, it is available in single player after completing the Snow Blind level. In a network game, it opens upon reaching Rank 21 (First Sergeant III).
- Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 also feature this shotgun. Uses all possible shotgun cartridges in the game.
- In the cult Far Cry 2 it is the most expensive and best shotgun.
- Present in the games Siphon Filter 2 and Siphon Filter 3, as well as Soldier Of Fortune II: Double Helix.
- Present in the game 7.62: uses both regular classic and drum magazines, can shoot regular shotgun shells, metal arrows or shot. It can conduct both single fire and fire in bursts.
- Present in the game The Punisher.
The design of the Daewoo USAS-12 self-loading shotgun is clearly planned; the device makes the weapon one of the most reliable and best in its category. The main advantages include the ability to use an enlarged magazine, a rich variety of ammunition and a high range of shots, effectiveness at short and long distances.
Weapons are found in computer games, in some they are the best and most powerful. The installation is popular among military structures and hunters. All that remains is to thank John Trevor for his design, which he presented to the world.
Story
Trevor worked for a small company, Gilbert Equipment Co., which had no manufacturing facilities. After a long search for potential manufacturers of new weapons, a division of the South Korean conglomerate Daewoo - Daewoo Precision Industries - was chosen. Korean engineers made some modifications to the gun's design, after which the USAS-12 was put into production. Among the main buyers were police and military structures of the countries of Southeast Asia. Gilbert Equipment Co tried to import semi-automatic versions into the US for sale on the civilian market, but the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms banned it. Locally produced versions were sold to US government and police units, assembled by RAMO Defense from South Korean parts. There is currently no information about the use of USAS-12 by any structures.
