BTR-3E1 is a modern Ukrainian armored personnel carrier, created by the Kharkov Mechanical Engineering Design Bureau named after A.A. Morozova. The BTR-3E1 is designed to transport personnel of motorized rifle units and provide fire support in combat. It is a deep modernization of the BTR-80 armored personnel carrier.

Navigation and fire control system BRDM-3

The topographic orientation of the BRDM has become comprehensive - excellent. Modern radio communications on short and VHF frequencies, classified telephone communications have been used before, GLONASS satellite communications have been added, and outdated systems are being replaced with new ones. There are unmanned aerial vehicles and ground reconnaissance robots on board.

The priorities of the BRDM-3 crew are detection and surveillance of enemy military targets; the 1RL 133-3 pulse radar “sees” through smoke, dust, fog, rain, snow: a person at a distance of 4 km, armored vehicles at a distance of 10 km. The antenna can be removed from the armored personnel carrier and placed at a distance. Night vision devices for reconnaissance officers: at a range of up to 15 km, 1PN 61 (laser) is used - the tank is visible (passive mode); at a distance of 3 km – a person is visible (active mode). The third method of viewing the surrounding environment is the 1PN 71 (thermal imaging) device, used in any weather and at any time of day at a distance of up to 9 km - the reconnaissance group commander sees medium tanks through a curtain: smoke, light, camouflaged or at night.

Ukrainian BTR-3E1 with 90 mm CMI CSE90LP cannon

The Belgian company CMI Defense, together with the State Enterprise "Kiev Armored Plant" in 2013, based on the BTR-3E armored personnel carrier, developed a light wheeled tank with 90 mm Cockerill gun and missile weapons.

The BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier was developed in 2010. The BTR-3E1 differs from the earlier versions of the BTR-3E family by its advanced fire control system, streamlined design, enhanced protection, and quality welds. The regular crew of the BTR-3E1 consists of three people: a driver, a commander and a gunner-operator of the combat module. Today, the production of the most advanced version of the BTR-3E1 is carried out at three Ukrainian factories - the state enterprise "Kiev Armored Plant", the state enterprise "Zhytomyr Armored Plant", the state enterprise "Kharkiv Special Vehicles Plant".

Hull production of the BTR-3E1 is located at Azovzagalmash in Mariupol, Donetsk region, Lozovsky Forging and Mechanical Plant LLC in Lozovaya, Kharkov region, as well as at the State Enterprise Kiev Armored Plant.

The armament of the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier consists entirely of components from Ukrainian manufacturers. BTR-3E1 is covered with deforming pixel painting. Deforming pixel coloring reduces the visibility of the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier and reduces its detection range by the enemy. The BTR-3E1 has differentiated bulletproof steel armor protection and anti-fragmentation protection made of Kevlar material (para-aramid fabric). The armored personnel carrier is equipped with air conditioning. To ensure external communication, the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier is equipped with radio stations - “Tadiran” VRS-980/VRS-6020, R-173M and radio receiver R-173PM (operating frequency range - 30000-75000 kHz), to provide internal communication - intercom equipment and switching TPU R-174.

The BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier is equipped with radio navigation equipment designed to continuously determine the coordinates of place, time and vector of the absolute ground speed of an object using radio signals from the GLONASS and GPS NAVSTAR systems anywhere in the world, at any time, regardless of weather conditions, solving problems, indicating navigation parameters.

The BTR-3E1 body is welded, made from sheets of rolled armor steel with a thickness of 4 to 30 mm and provides protection against 12.7 mm caliber bullets. The armor plates of the BTR-3E1 are installed at significant angles of inclination. The hull of the BTR-3 armored personnel carrier is completely sealed, has a streamlined shape, which increases its seaworthiness, and is equipped with a folding wave-reflective shield that fits in the stowed position on the frontal sheet of the hull, thus enhancing its protection.

The BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier reaches speeds of up to 107 km/h on the highway. Fuel range is 600 kilometers. The BTR-3E1 is capable of swimming at speeds of up to 10 km/h to cross water obstacles using a water-jet propulsion unit, which is installed in the rear part of the hull. To overcome a water barrier, the driver, without leaving the armored personnel carrier, activates the water deflector flap and turns on the water pumps.

In the front part of the BTR-3E1 hull there is a control compartment with seats for the driver and commander; in the middle part there is a fighting compartment, combined with the landing compartment. In the fighting compartment, immediately behind the driver’s and commander’s seats, there are four single landing seats, turned with their backs to the side. The control compartment and fighting compartment of the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier are lined with Kevlar, which prevents soldiers from being injured by bullets and shrapnel.

Six paratroopers in the aft part of the troop compartment are located in it on two longitudinal plastic seats in the center, sitting facing the side. The landing force of the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier has the ability to fire from under the armor, for which purpose ball embrasures are made in the sides of the hull, turned towards the front hemisphere. Paratroopers enter and exit the vehicle through double-leaf side doors on each side of the hull. The lower part of the door swings down and forms a step, and the upper part opens to the side as the car moves. There are also landing hatches on the roof for landing.

The engine and transmission compartment is located in the rear part of the hull. The engine and transmission compartment of the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier is equipped with an in-line six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine MTU 6R106TD21 with a volume of 7.2 liters and a power of 325 hp, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission Allison 3200SP. Also, automatic fire-fighting equipment is installed in the engine and transmission compartment of the BTR-3E1. The steering of the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier is equipped with power steering. The BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier is equipped with bullet-resistant Ukrainian tires KI-113 140 NS10 12.00R20 or French Michelin tires at the request of the customer. Michelin tires are bias-ply, tubeless, variable pressure, size 335/80 R20XXZL MTPL.

To increase maneuverability, the four front wheels are steering wheels. The BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier is equipped with a centralized tire pressure adjustment system, which allows the driver to quickly change the pressure to overcome difficult off-road areas. Each tire of the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier can withstand the impact of 3 bullets of 7.62 mm caliber; with damage and loss of wheel pressure, the armored personnel carrier can travel at least 50 km without changing tires.

Turret combat module BM-3 "Sturm"

The BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier can be equipped with three variants of combat modules - Shkval, Grom, Sturm, which are developed and produced in Ukraine.

The BTR-3E1 is equipped with a turret combat module BM-3M "Sturm-M" with remote control from the commander and operator positions. The armament of the BM-3M Shturm-M combat module ensures the destruction of enemy armored vehicles, manpower and helicopters. The BM-3M combat module "Sturm-3M" is one of the most compact and at the same time the most powerful of the existing combat modules of this class. The advantage of the BM-3M "Sturm-M" combat module lies in the small internal volume occupied by the fighting compartment of the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier. The combat modules BM-3S "Sturm-S" and BM-3M "Sturm-M" are produced by the state enterprise "Kiev Armored Plant".

The BM-3M "Sturm-M" combat module of the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier is equipped with the Trek-M optical-electronic surveillance, aiming and fire control system (MSS) manufactured by CheZaRa PJSC (Chernigov Radio Devices Plant). The Track-M fire control system provides surveillance and detection of ground targets and helicopters, aiming and remote control of the weapons of the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier.

The Trek-M fire control system consists of an OEM-V optical-electronic sighting system, a Panorama-2P all-round viewing device, integrated with the PN-B device - the Barrier ATGM fire control sight, and the SVU-500-4Ts weapon stabilizer -01 equipped with a two-axis angular velocity sensor, stabilizing the weapons of the Sturm combat module in vertical and horizontal planes, which allows the BTR-3E1 armored personnel carrier to fire while moving on rough terrain. On the turret of the BM-3M "Sturm-M" combat module, three on each side, are installed 81-mm smoke or aerosol grenades 902B "Tucha", activated by an electric trigger.

The commander has a separate panoramic observation, target search and target designation device “Panorama-2P”, and a control panel to provide duplicate control of the combat module’s weapons through the gunner’s sighting devices. The Panorama-2P panoramic camera is capable of rising to a height of up to 0.5 m above the turret of an armored personnel carrier and providing all-round visibility; it is used by the commander to issue target designation to the gunner. The Panorama-2P panoramic surveillance system is also produced at CheZaRa PJSC.

The BM-3M Shturm-M remote-controlled combat module is equipped with a 30-mm ZTM-1 cannon, a 7.62-mm KT-7.62 machine gun, a 30-mm KBA-117 automatic grenade launcher and a Barrier anti-tank guided weapon system "with two missiles with armor penetration behind dynamic protection of at least 800 mm. The ZTM-1 rifled automatic 30-mm double-fed cannon has an ammunition load of 200 rounds. The ammunition capacity of the 7.62 mm KT-7.62 machine gun is 500 rounds. On the left side of the module there is a 30-mm KBA-117 automatic grenade launcher, which has 29 ready-to-use grenades, and an additional 87 grenades are carried in reserve (three magazines, each containing 29 grenades).

The design of the BM-3M "Sturm-M" combat module is very flexible, which makes it possible to easily replace existing weapons with others, for example, replace the laser-controlled "Barrier" ATGM with the wire-controlled "Konkurs-M" ATGM, or with the wire-controlled ATGM "Konkurs-M" Red Arrow missiles.
