The main purpose of an armored vehicle is to transport personnel of special and military units. Additional capabilities - installation of various types of weapons and equipment. The armored vehicle is capable of performing assigned tasks on any roads and terrain. It is possible to use Bulat both in the Far North and in hot desert conditions. The armored vehicle is based on KAMAZ using units and components from KamAZ-5350. The following received armor protection: the perimeter of the cabin, the roof, the bottom, the engine compartment, the cabin (laminated safety glass).

The body of the Bulat SBA was designed by Moscow engineers of Zashchita JSC using improved armor that provides protection against 7.62mm bullets with a heat-strengthened core. Armor class VI according to GOST R 50963–96. The bottom of the multi-layer type vehicle, together with the special shape of the body, provides the armored vehicle with mine protection when a mine with an explosive equal to four kilograms of TNT is detonated.

To increase the survivability of personnel in the vehicle, the designers developed a proprietary seat design. The principle of operation of chairs during a mine explosion is to separate the person sitting in it from the consequences of a mine explosion. The landing module can accommodate up to ten people in full equipment.

The rear balancer and front dependent suspension are leaf springs. Gearboxes and transfer case are of mechanical type. Drum brakes, pneumatic with ABS.

Since the beginning of June 2012, one copy of the SBA-60-K2 “Bulat” has been transferred to the Sakhalin OMON unit, which is in the North Caucasus on a business trip by the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation of the Sakhalin region, where it is undergoing various tests. At the moment, the operation of the armored vehicle is quite successful, as reported by Sakhalin riot police.

About the developer

The Zashchita Corporation was founded in 1993 and has undergone major technological changes to this day. In addition to the research center, the company now has its own production sites and product repair services. The corporation specializes in the production of special vehicles for transporting valuable cargo and creates armored vehicles for special forces.

Work on the new project began in 2011. At the very beginning, the project was financed from private sources and did not imply government support.

Special chairs

The design of the chairs is our own development. They are fixed on the ceiling frame and do not make contact with the bottom of the armored vehicle. In addition, an additional footrest is mounted on the seats. Thus, the fighter who is in the chair is in a suspended state and is less susceptible to the effects of the shock wave. Technical characteristics show that troops in such chairs do not suffer serious damage even when detonated with a power of 2-4 kg of TNT.

Engine

Bulat armored vehicles use a hood-mounted power unit. Unlike conventional army KamAZ trucks, in the event of a collision with a mine, the shock wave falls on the engine compartment, and the cabin receives the least damage.

The engine is covered with an armored hood equipped with a hydraulic lift. The compartment in which the power plant and transmission are located received all-round protection of class 5 and is reliably protected from explosion.

The design of the engine compartment allows the installation of engines from 240 to 360 liters. With. The power plant is equipped with an external air intake, which allows the vehicle to overcome water obstacles up to 1.7 m deep

Demand for troops

Some skeptics often argue about the need to develop new types of light armored vehicles. But the experience of modern military conflicts shows the need to develop this direction. Indeed, often in urban battles, heavy equipment and armored personnel carriers become easy targets for the enemy; they simply lack mobility.

It is armored vehicles that are capable of not only transporting personnel, but can also become a universal platform for installing modern fire suppression equipment. The creation of wounded evacuation vehicles and mobile command posts on their basis makes the development of this branch of armored vehicles quite relevant.

The versatility of this equipment allows it to be used to equip police and riot police units. We should not forget about the development of technology. Today, reinforcement of such special vehicles with ceramic armor is being considered. And existing types of armid fabric can significantly increase the reliability of armored vehicles.

Internal volume

It’s best to start getting acquainted with the “filling” of this project from the cabin. Equipped with two hinged doors, it presents an impressive space. The driver feels free and has no distractions. The dashboard was borrowed from the same KamAZ 5350 and has not undergone major changes. The panel houses the rear view camera screen. It is possible to install air conditioning and interior heating; there is also an intercom, which allows you to give commands without leaving the car. The windshield looks much larger from the inside.

Personnel enter the Bulat armored vehicle through the rear hinged hatches. The absence of a vertical partition increases the landing speed. The hatches received a mechanical locking mechanism and two viewing windows, under which there are folding loopholes.

Reinforced hinges and stiffening ribs led to an increase in the weight of the landing doors, and the development company proposed equipping them with an electric drive for opening from the driver's seat or from the internal compartment. On each side there are special seats and mounts for fighters’ personal weapons. Earlier models of Bulat armored vehicles were equipped with a vertical pillar, which reduced the size of the rear hatches.

In the future, they decided to abandon such decisions. It is also possible to fire without leaving cover: there are closing loopholes in the armored glass on each side, and there are 4-6 folding hatches in the roof. Their number depends on the installed weapons. It is possible to attach remote fire vision systems and missile launchers.

Armor geometry

As a result of test explosions, engineers developed the optimal armor geometry for the lower part of the vehicle. Having a V-shape, the underbody of the car disperses the blast wave and prevents the penetration of fragments.

The side armor plates are also inclined, which gives the armored car a slightly angular shape, but thanks to this geometry, the quality of the armor increases. Protection class 6 according to GOST is capable of protecting personnel from the most common weapons.

Troops under the cover of armor are not afraid of hits from conventional and armor-piercing bullets of 7.62 caliber, as well as from charges from an under-barrel grenade launcher. The roof and bottom can easily withstand the explosions of RGD-5 and F-1 grenades. The bottom protects against explosive devices weighing up to 1 kg in TNT equivalent. In terms of protection class, it is slightly superior to the BTR-80.

On each side, the Bulat armored vehicle has three viewing windows protected by armored glass, which also has a protection class of 5. The cabin is covered with solid armored glass, which improves the visibility of the driver and the commander of the landing squad. The windshield is equipped with a heating system and does not fog up. The case has special compartments for spare parts.

Gas tanks, and there are two of them, received protective covers from the developers and also fit into the general protection class. Each gas tank has a capacity of 125 liters, and the total fuel volume gives a range of 800 km.

Additional options include:

  • satellite navigation system GLONASS/GPS;
  • heat and sound insulation;
  • radio station;
  • FVU;
  • electromechanical door locks;
  • intercom “car-street”;
  • RunFlat safety wheel inserts;
  • light-signal loud-speaking device (SSU);
  • signaling; audio system;
  • color design.

By agreement, other additional equipment can be installed.

Reliable chassis

When developing the equipment, engineers had to achieve not only increased cross-country ability, but also good maneuverability. That is why their choice fell on the proven 6x6 chassis of KamAZ trucks. The high reliability of the components and assemblies of these trucks has been proven not only by time, but also by numerous victories in prestigious world races.

The project has a frameless design, the leaf spring suspension is attached directly to the body. Like KamAZ vehicles, there is an emergency wheel inflation system. This makes it possible to travel a distance of up to 50 km even on damaged wheels.

The use of serial KamAZ vehicles as a “donor” vehicle made it possible to significantly simplify the repair and maintenance of these armored personnel carriers. No additional training is required for drivers, and mechanics have fully studied the chassis and components on earlier versions of military trucks.
