A switchblade is a folding product in which the blade is brought into working position by pressing a button, that is, by using a spring or other mechanism. It can be frontal, when the blade comes out from the central end of the handle, or lateral, in which it describes an arc when extracted.
You can legally own a knife with a blade up to 9 cm, and if it is larger, you need a permit to carry bladed weapons. The most famous “kidukh” brands among Russian ones are Kizlyar, Vityaz, Pirat. Expensive imported ones Microtech, Benchmade, Kershaw, budget ones Ontario RAT, Victorinox, Viking Nordway, Ganzo are of high quality.
Criterias of choice
To become the owner of a good switchblade, you need to consider several important characteristics when purchasing a model. First of all, the purpose of the product is determined; from this point the choice of the type of knife, the material of its manufacture, the manufacturer, and a number of other criteria will be based.
Material
A blade made of a special stainless alloy is considered ideal. The handle material can be:
- metal;
- natural wood;
- high strength plastic.
Models, the design of which involves moving forward, differ in technical parameters and different purposes, but the material used to make the blade is always steel.

Lock type
Gunsmiths make a front-mounted automatic knife with a blade clamp. There are several types of locks for fixing the working position:
- Liner Lock – a spring securely fixes the blade and is an element of the handle.
- Back Lock – a spiral is installed in the handle, clamping a special part that fixes the blade in the desired position.
- Clasp Knife - to secure the blade, a special ring coupling is used that rotates during fixation.
- AXIS Lock – pin lock.
- Balisong – used in butterfly models.
- Ultra Lock – frame and linear locks are installed simultaneously.
Front-type automatic switchblades are distinguished by their design features. In some products, the blades open automatically, in others the closure is carried out by moving the slider.
Purpose
The blade, made of high-quality steel, does not require sharpening for a long time, the cutting edge remains very sharp. These qualities have made automatic products in demand for performing a variety of jobs in the arsenal:
- hunters;
- fishermen;
- tourists;
- travelers.
Based on the group of people who use such a tool, knives are conventionally divided into hunting, tourist, and fishing. Automatic knives are produced especially for the military, in which the blade has several additions, for example, teeth for sawing. There is a separate category of products for extreme situations. The durable blade of survival knives allows you to cut down branches and butcher the carcass of an animal. In case of special need, an automatic knife can become a reliable defender against enemy attacks.
Manufacturer
There are many companies involved in the production of switchblades. Products from the USA, France, Italy and Sweden are considered the best. The TOP 10 includes the following companies:
- Kershaw;
- Opinel;
- Zero Tolerance;
- Cold Steel;
- Buck;
- Gerber Legendary Blades;
- Spyderco;
- Emerson;
- Benchmade;
- ProTech Knives.
In recent years, models made in Russia, at a factory located in Zlatoust, have become very popular. These unique products with a patterned handle and a durable blade are a worthy addition to the collections of bladed weapon lovers.
Extra options
In addition to the opening mechanism itself, an important role is played by the presence of a safety lock, which secures the button and prevents the knife from opening spontaneously. Also, the choice should be made in favor of products equipped with quality certificates and warranty cards. Switchblades are constantly being improved, their design changes, and their appearance becomes more attractive. The latest models are distinguished by their original design, aesthetics and special decor. Of course, these parameters do not affect the functionality of the product in any way, but they still add several points in favor of such a knife.
Best models
Among the wide variety of automatic models, the best are considered to be products from time-tested brands. Below are the top four, based on the opinions of ordinary users and knife experts.
Spyderco Autonomy
This model was specially designed for US Coast Guard personnel and was actively used in rescue operations. The blade is made of special steel H-1, which has powerful anti-corrosion properties - the blade does not become covered with a layer of rust even after being in very salty water. The large size of the release button allows you to work with a knife without taking off your gloves. The blade has serrations that easily cut any rope. The cost of the knife ranges from 14,000 rubles.
Benchmade Black Infidel
Very durable automatic knife (HRC 60-65), made of D2 stainless tool steel. The release button is located in the center, so the product allows you to work with your left or right hand. The main advantage of the model is the durable locking system. The disadvantages include extreme severity - all operations require increased caution. The cost of the model starts from 25,700 rubles.
Boker Kalashnikov
A Chinese knife that resembles a Kalashnikov assault rifle clip in appearance. The blade flips up and is made of AUS-8 alloy. The particularly slim body has a matte finish. Plain sharpening emphasizes its combat affiliation. To prevent the blade from accidentally flying out, the release button is made flush. The locking system is very tight to prevent the product from folding unexpectedly. The cost is lower than similar models - 2000-3000 rubles.
ProTech Godfather
The blade is made of 154-CM alloy. The aluminum handle is decorated with natural black ash inserts. This product is considered a work of art. The narrow blade is reminiscent of ancient Italian stilettos. The knife is not suitable for hiking; it is more convenient for them to deliver stabbing blows. The long blade unfolds instantly thanks to a special spiral spring. The main advantage of the model is the absence of blade play. The cost is in the range of 15,000-17,000 rubles.
Classification by purpose
There are five main groups of knives: for tourism and hunting, weapons, universal, kitchen, special.
The first group of knives serves a wide variety of purposes. As a rule, the product may be needed for attacking an animal, skinning, skinning a carcass. You should carefully monitor the presence of serrators and other elements that can cause additional suffering to the animal. It is unacceptable to purchase models with a blade length of less than 14 cm. Daggers have the best penetrating properties. The handle should be made of materials with good friction characteristics.
A travel tool must first of all be durable. If necessary, it can be used as a lever or an ax. Handle with pronounced finger rest. The optimal length is at least 10 cm. Machetes are used to cut down trees and reeds.
The second group includes several subspecies. Weapon models include:
- fascine - for sapper work;
- cleaver - the largest combat knife;
- ballistic - with a detachable blade inserted into the handle;
- throwing - often classified as sports equipment;
- for self-defense;
- bayonet knife;
- combat - the main goal is to defeat the enemy during a combat operation.
Universal models are used to simultaneously perform several tasks, which are available. Types of knives in this group include:
- multitools - a folding universal model with a large number of tools;
- office - the main purpose is cutting paper and opening envelopes, richly decorated models made of second-grade steel;
- EDC knives for everyday carry are lightweight and convenient; mainly folding products are used for household purposes.
Kitchen models are used for preparing and serving food. Most often you can find interesting types of knives, the names of which are based on the function they perform:
- dining rooms are an integral part of setting the festive table;
- oysters;
- for bread;
- for meat;
- electric - with a pair of serrated blades fastened together;
- cleaver - resembles a small hatchet;
- cutting blade - a thin and long blade;
- for removing bones;
- for cleaning vegetables.

Tips for storage and use
Automatic switchblades require proper care and proper use. Only in this case can they be used for a long time. You need to follow a few simple tips:
- After use, be sure to wipe the knife with a soft cloth. A toothbrush with any detergent can help remove severe stains.
- The product is always well dried, as moisture has a detrimental effect on the blade.
- To increase service life, all moving mechanisms are lubricated. Professionals recommend Ballistol weapon lubricant for this. If the knife is used very often, the procedure is carried out several times a year.
- A wooden handle will be perfectly protected by furniture polish, which will also hide all flaws.
- You should not try to cut very durable material with such a product. The blade may break or become dull quickly. For such work it is better to use an ax.
- Switchblade weapons cannot be stored in a sheath; a leather case is not suitable for this. They contain aggressive substances that harm the product. The ideal storage option would be a wooden box with a loose lid.
To use an automatic switchblade for a long time, it is important to monitor the condition of the blade. A few minutes of proper maintenance are enough for the product to retain its original appearance for many years.
Lubricate all moving parts with special compounds
The knife needs to be dried well. Use polish to protect the wooden handle from moisture.
The knife must be stored in a special box
Mechanism for transforming the sofa “Italian folding bed”
This transformation mechanism belongs to the double-folding mechanisms, just like the American clamshell. A double-folding mechanism is a mechanism that is brought into working position in two steps.
The principle of operation of the mechanism
To unfold the Italian folding bed from the sofa to the bed, you need to pull the upper part of the back of the sofa towards you (usually the back has a special loop for this purpose).
- In the first step of unfolding, the back of the sofa, together with the pillows, tilts forward and then lies down and rests on the seat of the sofa.
- At the second stage, the inner part of the sofa structure rotates around its axis, this is reminiscent of the unwinding of a rolled mattress. After this reversal, the support legs are revealed; the previously hidden ones were hidden and folded inside the structure, and the resulting sleeping area of the sofa rests on them.
Due to reinforced springs, the mechanism can be folded and unfolded without significant effort.
Advantages of the Italian folding bed: this mechanism is the most reliable and durable of folding beds, this became possible thanks to the use of reinforced metal pipes in the frame of the mechanism, the sofa when folded has a compact size, when unfolding there is no need to remove the pillows from the seat of the sofa, Italian folding beds have the most a thick and comfortable mattress for sleeping; in addition, the frame uses slats and belts that create an orthopedic effect.
Disadvantages: lack of storage space for linen, high price
In terms of ease of use and orthopedic properties, this type of mechanism is most suitable for a sleeping sofa for daily use.

History of appearance and development
The first historically reliable information about folding knives dates back to the turn of the 6th-5th centuries BC, and the oldest archaeological finds of their samples were made in the colonial cities of Ancient Greece and Rome. The first versions of folding knives had a primitive device that ensured rotation of the blade relative to the attachment point located at the end of the handle. In medieval Europe, this design was supplemented with various mechanisms that fixed the blade and its stability in a given position.
In general, folding knives during all these centuries were used only as hidden weapons, used infrequently due primarily to their high cost. But from the 16th century in Western Europe, steel blades became available to a fairly broad mass of the population, while the right to carry them openly was restrained by class restrictions. From this period, folding knives began to become noticeably widespread. It was as “concealed carry knives” that the Spanish Navaja appeared, and then the knives of the American colonists, the Filipino butterfly knife and other similar versions of “folk self-defense” weapons.
Further development of folding knives was aimed at improving their qualities in the “peaceful”, everyday consumer aspect. The properties of such a design began to come to the fore, giving it advantages over conventional knives in compactness and safety for the owner himself when worn. And technological progress has made it possible to improve any type of knives through the use of increasingly new and effective materials for their manufacture.
A folding knife is popular primarily for its ease of carrying.
National knives
In some countries there is such a thing as national knives. They are found in Germany, the Arctic, Spain, Latin America, Nepal, Persia, North America, Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Japan and France. The first distinctive feature of such knives is their appearance. Each model uses its own blade shape, length, and method of sharpening it. The same principle applies to the handle. Sometimes it is even decorated with additional decorative elements.
What materials are used to make knives?
Today, all knives are made mainly from carbon or alloy steel that has undergone a special thermomechanical treatment procedure. This metal provides products with all the necessary properties and characteristics, such as strength, corrosion resistance, and impact strength. If it is necessary to achieve higher strength values, manufacturers often use steel with a particularly uniform structure, for example, “powder” or CPM steels, to make knives. If there are no special requirements for the strength of the knife, for example, if we are talking about a kitchen knife, then a softer metal can be used for its manufacture: annealed iron, copper.
The handle is made of any material: plastic, metal, wood, leather, rubber, synthetic raw materials.
Knife sharpening
Even the highest quality and reliable knife can become dull over time of active use. Then you have to think about sharpening it. For this purpose, you can use several basic devices and tools:
- sharpening stones - they are produced by many companies and differ in grain size. For high-quality sharpening, two bars should be used - one for sharpening, the other for polishing;
- musats - they are used for straightening the cutting edge of a knife, periodically sharpening it until it is completely dull;
- machines with abrasive wheels - used in manufacturing plants and workshops. Even large knives sharpen very quickly, but one sharpening lasts less time than with manual sharpening;
- mechanical and electric sharpeners - the former are used for sharpening kitchen knives and scissors, the latter can also be used for sharpening sports and travel knives, because they are characterized by higher functionality.
A knife is a unique tool, the history of which stretches back for more than a millennium. I would like to note that its popularity will not disappear over time, just look at the best modern knives. They are distinguished by aesthetics, durability and functionality, and manufacturers continue to improve them.

How reliable is a switchblade?
The main problem with a folding knife with a switchblade is the random opening of the blade. Design solutions and elements increase the performance of the knife for performing certain jobs. But there is no ideal folder, since all owners of folding folders have different hand sizes, hand structure, and they can have a leading right or left hand. The safety of using a knife is affected not only by the type of lock, but also by the method of ejecting the blade. According to the principle of opening, knives can be divided into knives:
- Models with manual opening and closing of the blade. The blade is not thrown away. To remove the blade from the cavity of the handle, you need to pull it out by the back (not sharp) part of the blade. In the same way, the blade is folded into a handle.
- With semi-automatic blade opening. To bring it into working condition, it is enough to move the knife blade a little, and then it is brought to working condition by a special spring. The reverse operation of folding the blade is performed manually.
- With automatic opening/closing. The classic folding mechanism is reliable in the sense that it will not open accidentally, unlike a machine gun, but the process of removing and closing the blade is longer, which can be attributed to the disadvantages of the weapon.
Semi-automatic and automatic knives are the best folding knives in the world; they can be made with different blade throws. The semi-automatic side-eject folder opens at the touch of a button and the blade comes out from the side, just like classic folding folders. To close the blade, you need to fold the blade into the handle. The downside of this model is that with a sharp lateral ejection of the blade and careless handling, there is a risk of slashing your fingers with the blade. Semi-automatic frontal knives are single-operation knives, where the blade pops up vertically when you press a button, but it must be folded by moving the charger plate to close the blade.
The front folder has the most convenient and reliable design. The blade comes out of the handle along the longitudinal axis of the knife (vertically). The blade is thrown out sharply and clearly - when you remove the safety and press the button, the spring of the opening mechanism is activated. By moving the slider, the blade is retracted back into the handle (dual-operation front-facing). The only drawback of the machines is the failure of the opening/closing mechanism. There is no clear answer as to which “miscarriage” is better. The most reliable folding knife is the one you know how to use.
The fuse plays an important role in discharge products. It locks the button on semi-automatic and machine guns, preventing the arbitrary ejection of the blade. If there is no fuse, which is often found on Chinese-made replicas, the folding knife cannot be called reliable. The weapon may accidentally open on a belt or pocket and injure the owner. If a classic knife can only cut you slightly, a switchblade will cause a serious wound.
The main advantage of automatic and semi-automatic knives is their quick operation with one hand. This is of great importance in combat and some types of professional activities. The disadvantages of these knives include increased sensitivity to dirt due to the complex design of the mechanism.
Features of operation
There is an opinion among ordinary people that a frontal knife is a disposable product, but this is not true and we will dispel this myth a little later. Due to its design features, the shape of the handle tends to look a little like a prism. And, accordingly, the blade cannot be larger than the product itself when folded.
The purpose of such knives is more suitable for EDC (everyday blade) and in some cases for tactical use, but not often. With a front-feed cutter, you can perform a variety of everyday tasks. But in reality, it is not designed to perform heavy and complex tasks.
Alas, even the best automatic folding knife has a slight play in the blade. Even the most “branded” models can’t escape the design feature. Automatic folding knife, does not like sand, cutting carcasses, or high humidity.
If the product has undergone some serious testing, it should be disassembled, cleaned and lubricated. All this can be done at home. But ask yourself, will you succeed? If you don’t want to take risks, find a master who will undertake all the operations.
Be careful, there may be such a model.
But often people prefer to do it themselves, because it’s so interesting to disassemble and assemble your pocket “favorite”. Let's try to give a little instructions, and then it's up to you to decide:
- When you begin to disassemble a knife, be sure to make sure that you have all the appropriate tools. The screwdriver bits fit exactly into the screws on the handle.
- When disassembling it in half, be careful, the spring may jump out at the most unexpected moment. And searching in the corners of your room can end in disaster.
- After cleaning and blowing, you need to lubricate the parts. Choose a proven one, the best recommended one is a weapons grade one.
- When assembling, it is recommended to set the blade halfway. This will make it easier to assemble the knife.
To perform these manipulations less often, do not throw your blade anywhere. Do not use it with abrasive materials or leave it on dusty surfaces. Follow him, and he will help you out in difficult times.
Types and characteristics of the flow mechanism
A switchblade is always operated by a special lock release mechanism that holds the blade in the handle. The ejection mechanism is most often based on the use of a spring, which ejects the blade and facilitates its further fixation in the working position. According to the blade ejection pattern, switchblades are divided into two types: with vertical or frontal ejection.
Vertical ejection knives are easier to manufacture and therefore, as a rule, inexpensive. A switchblade with frontal ejection of the blade is more complex in the design of the ejection mechanism, but is capable of having increased combat properties, since the blade in this version can be a dagger - with a double-sided sharpening of the blade. Although in this case the width of the front switchblade cannot exceed the width of the knife handle.
There are several types of locks that secure the switchblade blade. Most often, flat spring levers, rotary couplings, movable pins, as well as special designs such as frame or balisong locks, which secure the butterfly knife blade, are used for these purposes.
There are a lot of mechanisms for fixing the blade of a folding knife; moreover, the development of new, more improved mechanisms is still happening. Among them are hinged structures that allow the blade to be fixed in several different positions.
Virolok
In its simplest form, this system is a regular ring with a slot for the blade to pass through. Traditionally used in knives from one of the oldest manufacturing companies, Opinel, but has become widespread in different types of folding knives. The clasp-knife easily locks the blade in the open position by turning the ring. This lock is distinguished by its simplicity and, accordingly, affordable cost, while it ensures reliable fixation of the blade.
Axis lock
Pin locks (axis-lock, arc-lock, plunge-lock) secure the blade with a movable spring-loaded pin. The principle of such a lock is a spindle-shaped pin that fits into the corresponding grooves.
Liner lock
Linear lock is considered the most common type for folding knives. Most often, a flat springy metal plate is used to fix the blade. In the frame-lock modification, such a plate is part of the handle, which almost completely eliminates the threat of its deformation. In the back-lock version, the blade is fixed on the butt side with a lever, which is pressed by a spring located in the handle.
Varieties
Switchblade knives differ in the blade ejection mechanism. The industry produces several types of them, which are divided into groups:
- Frontal ejection knives - today this design is considered the most reliable. The blade is thrown out of the handle strictly vertically. The cost of such products is quite high; high-quality models are not always available to a wide range of consumers.
- Automatic switchblades with a side ejection mechanism - after pressing the button, the blade comes out from the side of the handle. The movement of the blade forms a precise arc. The product has a low price, affordable to everyone.
The folding return knife with an automatic blade remains the most popular product due to its practicality and high efficiency.
In addition, switchblade knives may differ in the material of the blade and handle, the blade locking mechanism and functionality.
Front Side
Sofas without transformation mechanisms
By definition, such sofas do not contain transformation elements and are not capable of folding out. Sofas without mechanisms are used to create seating for two or more people. You can offer this option for a sofa in a small living room. Less often they can be found as a sofa for sleeping. Although for people who are not overweight, using a sofa in this capacity is quite acceptable.
Sofas that cannot be folded out can be used as separate sofa modules. By using several similar modules, especially of different sizes, you can change the shape of a sofa made up of modules.
A monolithic sofa is suitable for the hallway, for the living room and will decorate the kitchen or dining room. Often this type of sofa can be found in public places.
Pros: there is no mechanism, which means there is nothing to break. The service life of monolithic sofas is longer than the service life of folding sofas.
Cons: no mechanism, no possibility of converting the sofa. Monolithic sofas are not suitable for organizing sleeping places, especially if you need to sleep two or more people.

Materials and tools
The choice of metal for the blade and handle of the knife, as well as elements for decorative overlays, is carried out according to two principles:
- searching for the best options from available resources - suitable for hobbyists who have not previously encountered making knives and have decided to create their first product;
- studying the properties of materials and purchasing everything necessary is designed for craftsmen with a serious approach to their work and possessing good plumbing equipment.
The blade is made from carbon or high carbon steel, so Damascus is perfect. The higher the percentage of carbon content, the stronger and harder the material, therefore, it is more difficult to process, but the product will be the most durable and of high quality. The choice of metal for the handle of a homemade folding knife should not be approached with great pretentiousness; almost any material will do, including duralumin, bronze, and stainless steel. The raw materials for decorative overlays are also chosen according to the taste of the master; they can be made of hard wood, durable plastic, carbon fiber, or metal.
It is preferable to have professional tools for plumbing work:
- drill press or drill;
- angle grinder (grinder);
- vices and bench clamps;
- belt sanding machine.
You can get by with hand tools, the minimum required:
- metal files with different notches;
- hand drill and drill bits of different sizes;
- sandpaper of different grain sizes;
- hacksaw for metal.
In addition to these basic tools, you will need auxiliary ones:
- scissors, paper, cardboard and pencil to create a drawing and template;
- burner, oil and oven (a regular oven will do) for hardening the steel.
If the workshop is not equipped with special equipment, the choice of materials for the knife is made taking into account these conditions, that is, it is necessary to select the easiest metals to process for the blade and handle. The design of the handle, and especially the type of locking mechanism, is designed for the same reasons.
Is it possible to make an automatic folding knife yourself?
The answer is clear - you can. But for such rather cunning manipulations, you definitely need a special tool, ingenuity and a little mechanical skill. If one of the components is missing, quit right away, otherwise, read on and try to understand the manufacturing principle:
- Make a drawing; for this it is better to take a ready-made folding knife and trace its contours.
- You will need a blade; you can make it yourself from a metal plate, or alternatively take it from an old unnecessary knife. The second option is simpler. We adjust the width of the blade to the size of the handle; it will be made of two overlays. The material for them is better to use hard plastic.
- The next step is to put everything together, clamp it with clamps and drill a through hole to secure the blade to the handle. After drilling all the necessary holes in accordance with the drawing, we use brass or bronze linings to secure the linings.
- You need to rivet the blade to the handle, the clamp and the working part are adjusted to each other by cutting out suitable sockets. The fixing element is inserted into the handle.
- A spring of suitable size is secured with a bolt. And if everything was done correctly, then when you press the latch, the spring will push the blade out.
Read more in the article: “Do-it-yourself folding knife.”
If everything works as it should, you can take care of more reliable linings made of any metal. The product will look like it came from a store. A little imagination and you will get a unique product.

Knives Serrated knife with teeth: what is it for and how to sharpen it
History of origin
Engineer Bernard Mac Gaven received the first patent for the production of a design with a front extension blade in 1884. The first models ejected the blade automatically, but had to be retracted into the handle manually. Frontal folding knife designs were rarely produced until the mid-20th century and were classified as curiosities.
Serial production was established by German gunsmiths from the Bonsa corporation in 1950. At the same time, French and Italian manufacturers are starting to produce front-facing cameras. The production of clones of the famous Bonsa brand, which are produced in Taiwan and Korea, is spreading. Copies are called Super Futo, Nato.
At that time, the products of Korea of the Bell Metal brand, which were supplied by an American company to the USA, were of the highest quality, and were sold there on the market under the brand names of Italian and German manufacturers. Specialized stores selling automatic knives are opening in America. The government is introducing restrictions on the use of automatic front cameras and the demand for knives is falling catastrophically.
The change in demand is affecting production in Taiwan, where production has almost ceased. But the Chinese are taking over the baton. Many copies of the famous Bonsa appear on the market. One of the models served as a prototype for the development of Microtech products. The first model of the famous engineer Marfione is called Ultratech. The front knife is quickly gaining popularity, and prompt Chinese manufacturers are starting to produce a replica of this front knife.
Knives became widespread in the sailing environment, where sailors could not use two hands to cut gear. After World War II, the cult of folding knives developed in America; at the same time, many disabled people with one arm appeared who needed such products. The idea of frontal miscarriage is catching on and is gradually spreading to countries around the world.
A spectacular click when opening played a role, although any dexterous person can open a folding knife with both hands during this time. The knife is recognized as no more dangerous than a simple folding knife, but in some countries frontal knives are prohibited. In Russia, this type of knives is prohibited if the blade length is more than 90 mm.
Testing blade ejection mechanisms under various conditions
Now the time has come to continue our conversation about semi-automatic devices. But we won’t talk about the complexities of the mechanisms, but about how these knives behave in life. Many users are not particularly interested in what type of spring is inside the folder: it is much more important that everything works, and works well. Let's try to figure this out.
The test conditions were extremely simple and transparent: the knives had to be tested in operation, and with maximum load. For almost six months they were in our pockets, and this, as we know, is the best guarantee that they were actually used. Sometimes knives were subjected to influences that were generally inapplicable to them. For example, the guys who worked in Karelia in winter at a temperature of 27-32 below zero used knives on the street, and before that they immersed them in water. Why was this necessary? Did you want to test the mechanism of action of knives to the limit? - that’s why the field test is carried out. In the same way, knives were sprinkled with sand, after which they were worked with without washing, and then washed in the river to see if this could be done without disassembling the knife. They were also immersed in sea water so that, after some time, they could see the result of the destructive work of salt. And under such conditions, a lot of wood, cardboard, ropes, fish and much more were cut to provide the knives with the proper load. Two rescuers who don't like can openers even used them to open cans. These knives have also done a fair amount of work in field and home kitchens.
Kershaw Blur1670, Camillus Heat and SOG Trident took the brunt of the test. Why them? There are several reasons. First of all, we had them in stock. Secondly, these models are representative from the point of view of the main variants of emission mechanisms. If you read the article in the previous issue, you probably noticed the similarity of the blade ejection mechanisms belonging to the second and third groups. Therefore, based on the Camillus Heat testing results, one can draw conclusions regarding the advantages and disadvantages of other models that have a similar blade ejection mechanism. Likewise, Kershaw Blur 1670 “accounted for” numerous models classified in the first group. In turn, SOG Trident acted as the representative of the fifth group. As for the models of the fourth group (Camco, Meyerco), their full-scale samples could not be found. But we weren't particularly upset. Still, carrying 5 or 6 knives in your pocket at the same time is too burdensome, and if you put them in a backpack, you won’t use them at all. Only those in your pocket will work.
In general, looking ahead, I will say that all the knives worked well, although each in its own way. I would like to note that it is a difficult matter to evaluate semi-automatic knives. After all, the blade ejection mechanism is not the whole knife. These knives have different blades, locks, ergonomics, and designs. A friend of mine simply did not accept the design of the Kershaw 1670, while I consider it almost flawless. But he really liked the slightly rougher Heat from Camillus, and that’s what he carries with him all the time.
Cold test
As already mentioned, the knives passed their first serious test in the cold. Inventive rescuers, being in the “base hut,” threw knives into a basin of water and quickly running bubbles showed that water had poured into all the cavities. And then they were taken out into the cold, and the test began to gain strength. Of course, there were concerns, because chromium steels are not good friends with the cold. But there were no special problems, and the knives generally behaved decently.
Camillus Heat opened immediately, and no difference was observed from normal (not extreme) spring operation: the knife opened with the usual hard sound [1].
With the Kershaw 1670, the first opening was a little slower, but the second? - in normal mode. But the SOG Trident blade did not budge at first, so I had to open and close the knife manually several times. Then the knife began to open on its own, but not completely, and only after 5-6 unsuccessful attempts did the mechanism start working. At the same time, if there was a pause in the work, the knife quickly froze, after which it did not open again in the best way. But both SOG Flash knives, which we also had with us, were less afraid of the cold.
The spring on the Camillus knife is not covered by anything, and therefore water simply does not linger on it, but the other two knives (Kershaw and SOG) have the ejection mechanism hidden in the handle, but not hermetically, and therefore water got in there with all the ensuing consequences. True, only a small amount of water entered the cavity of the Kershaw handle, since it was filled with thick lubricant.
Kitchen test
Actually, the process of preparing food (that is, slicing it) is not dangerous for a knife: the RK of a modern knife copes with this perfectly, and new-generation corrosion-resistant steels will not let you down, but the juice and pulp of some vegetables and fruits may well interfere with the further operation of the knife mechanism. The organic acids they contain, although relatively weak, can well be considered an aggressive environment. But a test is a test. Peaches, apples, and oranges were chopped and their juice reached the spring. Meat was also sliced, and two AUS8A blades and one 440A blade did an excellent job. But blood is also an aggressive environment, we should not forget about this. As a result, we can state that fruit juice and blood had virtually no effect on the operation of the knives. At the same time, the juice was allowed to dry on the knife, and no creaks or “stiffness”, which often appear in such cases, were detected.
Sea water, sand and dust
The water in the Black Sea is quite salty, so that rust simply falls off from some steels. Our knives were immersed in sea water solely out of love for the purity of the experiment, since there was no objective need for this. On the other hand, it was difficult to avoid temptation while on the seashore: sea water and sand create ideal conditions for the dough in terms of their rigidity. Carrying a knife in your pocket and getting human sweat on it cannot compare with this. So, on the SOG and Camillus knives, an orange film appeared after a few hours. Quite large pieces of rust appeared on the SOG Trident knife on the blade near the hole in the blade axis and around the opening pegs. The Camillus has rust on the linear lock plate and ejection spring. However, you can remove rust from a knife without disassembling it. No signs of oxidation were found on the Kershaw model.
As for sand, the “caliber” of this sand itself, or, more simply put, the size of solid particles, plays an important role. Ordinary beach sand did not interfere with any knife, but the sand dust made its own adjustments to the operation of the mechanism: all the knives creaked (that same change in sound!) and stopped opening consistently. Only Camillus continued to more or less smartly throw out the blade thanks to a powerful spring. The SOG and Kershaw knives had to be disassembled and cleaned. There is another extreme - too coarse sand or small pebbles. There was one case of poor operation of the ejection mechanism of a Camillus knife due to such small stones. These foreign particles of the external environment had to be picked out from the knife using an awl.
Disassembling and assembling the knife
I had to disassemble and reassemble all the knives several times. This is a very interesting, albeit troublesome matter. The entire test trio was made like a good designer. All the parts fit perfectly, especially the Kershaw ones. However, I advise you to be more careful when disassembling the SOG knife. Small balls and springs immediately begin to fall out of it, and when assembling it, you cannot do without narrow pliers or tweezers, since it is almost impossible to install the spring so that the above-mentioned balls and springs do not fly apart again.

The order of firing a shot from the NRS/NRS-2
It is clear that the shooting device is narrow-profile. And they are unlikely to use it for every task. The saying: “Rarely - but accurately” is more suitable here. But there are times when this single shot can become fatal and the advantage in the current situation will be on your side. The order of firing from the NRS-2 knife:
- Using a turning motion, it is necessary to remove the “locking device”.
- Having installed the cartridge in the chamber, without turning it over, it should be inserted into the appropriate slots in the firing device box.
- Then you need to turn the barrel in this position until there is a characteristic “click” and the mechanism falls into place.
- The trigger lever must be lifted up and released. Please note that the safety must be in the firing position.
- Feel the trigger lever under your right index finger. Take the knife with the blade towards you and press it between your palms from below. No finger should be on top of the muzzle.
- Once you take aim, you can fire a shot. After shooting, you need to remove the barrel from the handle and remove the spent cartridge case.
Characteristics of special SP4 cartridges
The cartridge itself is a closed type, the wafer sleeve completely hides the bullet. The noiselessness of the PS-4 cartridge is achieved due to the piston. Initially, this SP4 cartridge was developed for the Vul silent pistols. But they were able to find a use for it in combination with the LDC.
The specificity of the cartridge mechanism is that the bullet is pushed by a piston, and, having reached a narrowing, it stops. By sealing the cartridge case, gases remain in it after the shot. Thanks to this, the shot becomes silent and there is no light flash.

Operating principle
In front-facing knives, the blade is not removed from the side, as in traditional mechanical knives, but is pulled forward from the end along the center line of the handle. The release button or bracket on the handle of the knife is pressed; in automatic models, opening and folding is carried out automatically. A switchblade with a frontal ejection blade is available with a single-sided blade or uses the principle of a dagger blade, in which the tip is sharpened on both sides.
Automatic folding weapons are prohibited weapons by Russian law depending on the length of the blade, but this restriction does not apply to semi-automatic models. The miscarriages are equipped with safety locks to avoid accidental injuries during transportation and storage.
Popular mechanisms that eject the blade when the spring is stretched include samples from Microtech and Ultratech. The Benchmade, Pagan and Infidel models are prototypes with a coil compression opening. The opening mechanism in both cases is located parallel to the blade shaft inside the handle. The blade has a lock in the shank area, which, when the tip moves, moves back and forth along the grooves inside the handle.
A special flag is provided in the chassis structure for attaching the slider. The frame has two locking locks that lock the blade in the closed and open position. Knives are available with a lever on the side or front end of the handle. The helix of the frame expands or contracts as the slider moves forward, contributing to a straight-line force in the blade tang area. Further movement of the lever leads to the opening of the spring-loaded lock mechanism, and the lever moves to the free position.
A spring transmits forward movement to the blade through a pin, and the blade is ejected from the handle of the knife under the influence of inertia. The lock comes into operation and fixes the tip in the working position. The knife is closed in the reverse order using locks. First, the spring is compressed or stretched, which leads to a force in the shank area. The open-lock lock opens, the blade is pulled into the handle and secured with a closed-lock fastening lock. For the flawless operation of a complex mechanism, the quality and thoroughness of the processing of internal surfaces is an important condition.
Advantages and disadvantages
The weapon can be quickly brought into working position with one hand
Quality is valued in knife fighting, this is also important for those who have one hand free while working.
The disadvantages of the design include the following points:
- The width of the blade cannot be greater than the size of the handle, and in the open position there is a faintly visible play. Weapons companies produce tools that do not have this drawback, but the products are highly expensive.
- The opening mechanism becomes dirty, and cleaning is difficult due to the complexity of the design. In some models, preventive cleansing is performed only by a specialist. Semi-automatic and automatic options require additional protection in the field.
There are no disadvantages in knives that open under the influence of gravity (inertial weapons). The folding model of the German paratroopers is a famous representative of this series, the weapon is modified and produced in our time. The knife is reliable, its structure is simplified, and a non-specialist can easily disassemble the structure for cleaning.
Types of locks
The frontal automatic switchblade is produced by gunsmiths with a reliable blade lock in the working position. There are several types of fastening locks:
- liner-lock - a linear lock, in which a spring fixes and presses the blade, while being part of the handle;
- back-lock - a spiral in the handle holds a special part on the side of the butt to fix the blade in the required position;
- clasp-knife - to secure the tip, a ring-shaped coupling is provided, which rotates when fixed;
- axis-lock - pin type lock;
- Balison-lock - provided in butterfly-type knives;
- ultralock - a linear and frame lock is assembled.
Blade fixation
Today there are dozens of different locks that are used to block the movement of the blade. They use both ancient and trouble-free options, as well as unusual modern designs. To make the right choice, you should know the main types of locks.
- Auto Lock. This option is considered effective and is suitable for any user. To eject the blade, just press one button, and the locking occurs independently, which is also convenient.
- Linear Lock. The quality of blade fixation depends on the reliability of the mechanism. In cheap models, the spring is not durable and wears out quickly.
- Back Lock. This design is most common and is characterized by simplicity and reliability. The main thing is that all elements of the mechanism fit well, otherwise the main parts will become loose, which will lead to damage.
- Button Lock. A special feature of such models is the presence of a spring button. The sharp part is securely fixed in the closed position. However, there is also a drawback: the mechanism is afraid of dust and dirt, and if it comes into contact with sand, the fixation will stop working.
- The automatic machine is used in most modern models. Opening and closing is carried out independently. Most often found in camping knives, as it can help out in an extreme situation. The disadvantage of the design is that it is afraid of exposure to sand and dirt, because the main mechanism gets clogged.
- Plunge Lock. A product with such a lock is suitable for those who handle knives carefully. Because the device must always remain clean; if this does not happen, you should not count on reliability. The sharp part is fixed using a pin.
As with all other knife models, it is impossible to say for sure which lock is better. It all depends on the conditions and situation under which the product is used. It is important to understand that there is no ideal option, everything has disadvantages and strengths.
If a person does not know how to choose a model based on the type of blade lock, it should be understood that any of the above methods will do. The rest may break quickly or have a complex mechanism.
Tactical and technical characteristics of knives NRS and NRS-2
Aiming with a shooting knife is quite inconvenient, but with certain skills and training, you can achieve normal results.
There is a front sight on the handle and a rear sight in the guard. Reloading time takes a lot of time, but initially there was no task to make a knife-revolver, and if you remember muskets, a time of 1 minute can be considered normal.
Technical characteristics of the NRS knife
The bullet speed is about 140 meters per second. One shot per minute, no faster. When shooting from a knife, a silent SP-3 cartridge was used. The shot was silent and flameless; it was possible to shoot even under water. Its technical characteristics looked like this:
- total mass of LDC with cartridge: 0.62 kg;
- total length: 32.2 cm;
- length without sheath: 29 cm;
- blade length: 16 cm;
- stem length: 6 cm;
- cartridge: 7.62x35 SP3.
Shooting took place in this way: the knife must be turned with the blade towards you, the handle must be pointed at the target, it must be held with both hands, the sheath must be on. Aimed firing range is 20 meters.
Technical characteristics of the knife NRS-2
LDC In 1986, it underwent minor changes related specifically to its firearms ability. The old cartridge, the PS-3 system, was replaced with a more modern PS-4.
Knife NRS-2.
The initial speed of the bullet reached 200 meters per second. For this reason, it was necessary to make small design changes specifically in the firing part:
- total weight of NRS-2 with cartridge: 0.57 kg;
- total length: 32.2 cm;
- length without sheath: 29 cm;
- blade length: 16 cm;
- stem length: 6 cm;
- cartridge: 7.62x42 SP4.
The firing principle is no different from the LDC, the only thing is that the reload speed has doubled. The target firing range has increased to 25 meters. The firing device can be removed completely and replaced with a special insert.
Distinctive features of the NRS knife from the NRS-2
Shooting stance.
The NRS knife itself has an external resemblance to an AKM bayonet; at the end of the handle there is a plastic “front sight” and no screwdriver.
The most important difference between these knives is, of course, the cartridges. SP4 is significantly better in firepower than SP3
The reconstruction was successful, the front sight was made metal and there is even the ability to adjust its height.
How to choose ?
What should you pay attention to if you want a knife that perfectly suits your needs? What should the best foldable models have?
- His pen is very important. It should fit well in the hand and provide ease of use. It should also be remembered that the shorter the handle, the lower the ease of use;
- The handle can be straight or curved. A folding knife with a straight handle is great for a variety of jobs as it fits well in the hand.
- Folding versions with a curved handle allow you to grip them in one position, but their advantage is ease of cutting.
- The handle material affects the weight of the knife, as well as its service life. By choosing aluminum, you can be sure that the equipment will be lightweight, but at the same time durable.
- When choosing a wooden handle, you can count on efficient work. However, this material is not particularly durable, so the knife will not work in difficult field conditions. Other types of materials are carbon fiber (hardwearing), titanium (hardwearing and lightweight), or leather (low strength).
Products from Russia
Patriots prefer to choose Russian-made automatic knives. Unfortunately, there are not so many of them, but choosing a model is quite possible.
You can pay attention to the following devices:
- Fantomas from the manufacturer MEDTECH. A high-quality throw-out model with the principle of lateral blade release. The blade has an interesting spear-shaped shape and is sharpened on one side. The overlay is made of ebony wood.
- Stalker, also produced by MEDTECH. The model is very similar to the previous one. It also functions on the principle of side ejection, has a spear-shaped blade and an ebony guard.
- Vendetta from the Vityaz company. An economy class knife, of course, is not as high quality as a Swiss knife, but very good. Nice modern design, easy to use.
- Clear schedule. The list of Russian models cannot do without a unit from. This is one of the most famous companies producing budget devices. The blade is made of high-quality 440 steel and treated with a special solution that makes it matte. The handle has a skeletal shape and is made of a resistant alloy. When folded, the product is very compact.
