The AS50 is fired with rifle cartridges of 12.7×99 mm caliber (M99B-II). Technically, it is a self-loading rifle with an automatic gas release mechanism.

The AS50 large-caliber sniper rifle is the latest development of the legendary English company Accuracy International Ltd. This rifle is designed specifically for use by Army Special Operations Forces to combat materiel and unarmored or lightly armored enemy combat equipment. The AS50 rifle was first demonstrated to the general public in January 2005 at the ShotShow 2005 exhibition in the USA, and is currently being tested in units of the US Special Operations Forces.

The AS50 rifle is self-loading, uses a gas-operated pistonless automatic with a gas tube located above the barrel and locked with the bolt tilted down. The receiver is made of steel. The massive barrel is equipped with a muzzle brake and is cantilevered inside a short perforated forend-casing. Along the entire upper surface of the receiver and forend there is a Picatinny rail type guide for installing various optical and night sights. Two additional short guides are made on the sides of the forend; laser lasers or other accessories can be attached to them. The rifle is standardly equipped with a lightweight folding bipod with adjustable support length, as well as an additional rear folding handle under the butt, which can additionally serve as a rear support. For maintenance, compact storage or transportation, the rifle can be quickly disassembled into its main components, and then just as quickly assembled and brought into combat position.

Design

The automation of a sniper rifle operates by using part of the powder gases, which are removed from the barrel channel. The tube and piston of the gas release mechanism are located above the barrel. The barrel channel is locked by tilting the bolt.

The steel barrel is made in a free-floating design. To prevent tossing during a shot, the model is equipped with a powerful compensator brake with two chambers. A successful design allows you to dampen recoil and flash of a shot, as well as prevent dust from being raised when shooting in a prone position.

On top of the receiver there is a Picatinny rail for placing sniper scopes of various modifications. On the left is the two-position safety lever. The rear is equipped with a rubber butt pad.

The accuracy international as50 design includes a mechanism to prevent disassembly when the fuse is off. The bolt can be locked at the rear, allowing the AS50 to be inspected and cleaned without the need for disassembly.

Under the butt there is a folding handle, which can be used if additional support is needed. The aluminum forend has guides for mounting various equipment. Underneath is a lightweight and durable bipedal folding bipod that allows the rifle to rotate in any direction. In this case, there is no possibility of adjusting the height of the position, but the weapon is securely and stably fixed in the position chosen for shooting.

The accuracy international as50 can be disassembled into its component parts in three minutes. This significantly increases the comfort of its transportation and maintenance.

Shooting is carried out with rifle cartridges. Ammunition is stored in detachable box magazines.

In February 2009, the US Special Operations Command US SOCOM (United States Special Operations Command) announced a competition for the development and delivery of a new sniper rifle “PSR” (Precision Sniper Rifle - high-precision sniper rifle). Among others, the famous English company (AI) took part in the competition, presenting a new rifle of the “AX” model range at the beginning of 2010.

For the PSR competition, Accuracy International offered the “AX338” sniper rifle in .338 Lapua Magnum caliber. This rifle is a modular multi-caliber weapon designed to accept the .338 Lapua Magnum (AI AX338 variant) and .308 Winchester (AI AX308 variant), as well as the .300 Winchester Magnum cartridges when changing actions, barrels and magazines.

In addition to the basic models of AX338 and AX308 sniper rifles, Accuracy International has developed a large-caliber (anti-material) sniper rifle “AX50” chambered for .50 BMG (12.7x99 mm).

In fact, the rifle of the Accuracy International AX model range is an improved modification of the AW series rifle, from which strength, reliability, excellent accuracy and ease of maintenance were inherited, while receiving high ergonomic qualities and low weight.

The AI ​​AX50 sniper rifle has an aluminum supporting rail to which the receiver, stock elements, etc. are attached. In the new rifle, the developer used the experience gained when creating the AI ​​AW50 rifle, the supporting tire of which was not completely covered with nylon linings and had a thickening in the area of ​​the receiver and chamber, which made it possible to more effectively distribute the force transmitted from the receiver to the stock, which had a beneficial effect on the accuracy of fire. The rear part of the supporting rail is covered with a nylon lining, which forms a fire control handle and ends with a butt attachment and rotation unit. In the front part of the tire is covered with a pad that provides comfortable holding of the rifle with a “weak” hand, and has attachment points for the rifle fore-end.

The handguard is an octagonal frame rigidly mounted on a supporting rail, the edges of which are equipped with fastening points that allow the installation of platforms with guides, various linings or additional equipment. This design of the forend combines ample opportunities for placing bipods, sights and attachments for them, laser target units and additional handles with effective removal of hot air from the barrel through unused mounting holes.

The free-floating barrel of the new rifle is similar to the AW series barrels and has a smooth external profile or a profile with fullers. The barrel is equipped with a new highly effective two-chamber muzzle brake flash suppressor (previously a single-chamber one was used on the AW series).

The barrel is installed in the receiver in the same way as on other rifles of the company - it is screwed into the thread in the receiver, giving it additional rigidity.

Also identical to the AW series, the receiver is mounted on a supporting rail - the receiver is first glued with epoxy resin and then bolted to the frame.

On the upper surface of the receiver there is a Picatinny rail type guide, designed for mounting various optical or electron-optical sights.

The bolt action group is identical to that of the AW series. The diameter of the bolt stem is 30 mm.

The locking occurs on three lugs, the bolt rotation angle is 60°, which reduces reloading time.

The weapon is fed with ammunition from detachable box magazines with a capacity of 5 rounds. There is a cutout in the supporting rail, which makes it more comfortable when manipulating the magazine.

The fire control handle and buttstock are offered in two versions, in a version that copies the design of the stock for the AW series or in a new version that structurally replicates the stock used by the company in the Covert rifle. In the second case, the pistol grip is not closed and has the ability to adjust its shape by changing the inserts on the back. The shape of the handle is maximally adapted for high-precision shooting, due to the angle of the handle and the position of the hand on it.

Regardless of the design option, the buttstock has an adjustment of the back of the butt in the angle in the plane perpendicular to the axis of the rifle and in height, adjustment along the length of the butt due to spacers and adjustment of the cheek height. The buttstock is equipped with sling swivels on both sides, as well as a monopod (additional support) of a new design in the cutout for the “weak” hand. Unlike the old design with a washer lock, the AX series rifles use a push-button lock. The height of the monopod is 115 mm; a two-stage monopod can also be ordered. A Picatinny rail can be installed on the bottom surface of the stock.

The rifle stock - the open parts of the supporting rail and forend, as well as the lining, can have three main colors - black, green or yellow-brown, or any other at the request of the customer.

The stated sighting range of the Accuracy International AX.50 rifle when using special branded ammunition is just under 2400 meters.

The AWM

Craig Harrison of the British Army to establish a new record distance for a confirmed kill shot in Afghanistan of 2,707 yards (2,475 m) in November 2009, surpassing the previous record held by a McMillan TAC-50 fired by Cpl. Rob Furlong of the Canadian Armed Forces. This record was later certified by Guinness World Records.
