M110 sniper rifle: deadly simplicity, lightness and reliability

The history of the creation of the M110 sniper rifle

The M40A1 rifle has been in service with US Army snipers since the mid-20th century. In connection with the new requirements of the defense department, the Pentagon needed a new type of sniper weapon, for which already at the design stage the United States Department of Defense put forward a number of mandatory conditions:

  • the ability to use M118LR ammunition, as well as M993 AP armor-piercing cartridges;
  • effective destruction range up to 1 thousand meters;
  • normal functioning of the weapon without critical failures when shooting from 100 to 300 rounds using a daytime optical sight.

In the early fall of 2005, the Knight's Armament Company presented its modification of the MK11 mod.0 sniper rifle for testing. The first models of the new weapon had a sand-colored camouflage coating.

Tactical and technical characteristics of the M110 sniper rifle

After successful testing and modification of some elements, the sniper rifle, which was assigned the index M110, was equipped with a USP (striking mechanism) two-stage trigger system, which has a beneficial effect on shooting accuracy and makes the trigger release not only fast, but also predictable at the moment of opening fire. The weapon also received a barrel fore-end with rail-type guides. A heat-protective barrel casing is placed inside it.

In addition, there is an adjustment of the butt along its length, a groove in the charging handle for discharging powder gases in the opposite direction from the shooter’s face. The designers equipped the M110 sniper rifle with a monolithic type of bracket for installing an optical sight.

The weight of the M110 rifle, equipped with a bipod, a barrel silencer, a MIL-STD-1913 sighting rib, an optical sight and a loaded magazine for 10 rounds of 7.62x51 mm caliber, is less than 8 kg.

The total length of the weapon is 1219 mm, 508 of which is the rifle barrel. The target range of the M110 is 1 thousand meters with an effective range of 800 m. The starting speed of the ammunition fired during a shot is 783 meters per second. The M110 rifle can be equipped with box-type magazines with 10 or 20 rounds.

203 mm self-propelled howitzer M110

US Army M110A2.
It differs from the previous version of the M110 in having a long barrel with a muzzle brake. The M110 203 mm self-propelled howitzer uses the same chassis and gun mount as the M107 self-propelled artillery mount. The M110 was adopted by the US Army in 1963, in units it is available in the amount of one battery of 4 guns per infantry division and one battalion of 12 guns per tank or mechanized division. The production of the self-propelled artillery unit was completed in the late 1960s, but resumed in the 1970s. by BMY, the latest models are still in production. In addition to the US Army and Marine Corps, the M1 10 is used in: Belgium, Greece, Iran. Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Holland, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, England and West Germany. This list also includes countries that ordered the M1 10; often M1 10.

The M110 body is welded from steel armor: the driver’s seat is in front on the left, the engine and transmission compartment is located to the right of it; the howitzer is mounted at the top, in the rear of the chassis. The suspension is a torsion bar type, includes 5 road wheels, the rear one serves as a steering wheel, and the drive wheel serves as the front one. The suspension can be locked before firing to improve stability.

The 203-mm M2A2 howitzer, created before World War II, is mounted on an M158 carriage with vertical aiming angles from minus 2 to +65° and horizontal aiming - 30° left and right. The aiming mechanisms have hydraulic and emergency manual drives. M2A2 does not have a muzzle brake or a powder gas removal system; the shutter is piston type. The loading mechanism is located at the rear of the chassis. Types of ammunition: high-explosive (projectile weight 92.53 kg, maximum range 16.8 km), high-explosive cluster (scatters 104 or 195 grenades) and tactical nuclear. Only two shots are transported on the M110, the rest are delivered by the M548 carrier, which also carries part of the crew. The entire crew of the M110 consists of 13 people, 5 of whom are located in the vehicle itself (commander, driver and three gunners).

Tuning the M110 sniper rifle

Snipers of the American Armed Forces and armies, who are armed with the M110 rifle, tune this weapon depending on combat goals and missions. The sand “camouflage” that was proposed by the manufacturer for the first models of the sniper rifle, dictated by its “focus” on combat operations in Afghanistan and the Middle East, remains relevant today.

However, snipers performing combat missions in different types of terrain make adjustments to the appearance of the weapon. In addition to changing the color of the body and barrel, “mesh” or “rope” camouflage remains quite popular, allowing the shooter to hide both himself and the rifle as much as possible in thick grass, bushes or forested areas.

Exploitation

[3]

The rifle finally entered service with the troops in 2008. The M110 rifle was used quite intensively in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. As of today, it is known that the following complaints have been received from the troops about the M110 model:

  1. Unreliability of weapons
  2. Poor supply of spare parts
  3. Locking problems
  4. Poor quality control
  5. Lack of accuracy
  6. Low durability

It was also reported that some of the rifles were disassembled to replenish the remaining rifles with spare parts. The barrel, according to users, is not stable enough; after firing 500 shots, problems with accuracy were observed, which led to the replacement of the barrel.

However, according to the American military, these problems have now been eliminated.

In 2016, the American army abandoned the M110, and now the Marines and army special forces units are looking for a replacement.

"Barrett M107"

This is the best sniper rifle in the world in terms of range and destructive power. It is used to eliminate personnel and lightly armored vehicles over long distances. 50 caliber ammunition provides fast and accurate fire against enemy targets located within a radius of two kilometers. It is especially relevant during warfare in urban environments, when safe distance and high firepower give the counter-sniper greater opportunities. If the weapon is in the hands of a professional, he will eliminate strategic targets in the shortest possible time with minimal collateral damage.

When fired, this rifle has low recoil. The reason for this is the M107 mechanism, skillfully designed by engineers, consisting of a muzzle brake and a recoil block. The joint work of these elements makes it possible to reduce the recoil energy of the weapon. Although the latter can increase significantly when installing a muffler.

"CheyTak M200 Intervention"

So, you have been presented with the best sniper rifles in the world, a list of which periodically appears in publications on the relevant topic. In conclusion, we will tell you about another type of this weapon that was invented by. This is a large-caliber M200 rifle, designed to destroy people and light armored targets at long distances. Let us recall that large-caliber weapons of this type are used by the military to provide shooters with the opportunity to detect and eliminate the main elements of enemy equipment.

The M200 is the best sniper rifle in the world in terms of accuracy. Its damage radius is about 2000 meters. In ideal shooting conditions, it showed a range of 2200 meters. And this takes into account group shots, when bullets hit the same target location many times in a row.

Most modern large caliber rifles use the .50BMG cartridge. I decided to develop my own version and designated it .408. According to the company, it is something between the existing 50BMG and 338 Lapua.

SABR 308

It is among the top best sniper rifles in the world due to its versatility. SABR 308 has a fairly wide range of applications. Its cartridge caliber is the same as the M110. Thanks to the removable upper receiver, the rifle can be used as a sniper or assault weapon. There is also a special portable case for the upper receiver.

"AVSM Super Magnum"

Sniper rifle . Equipped with a removable box magazine (5 rounds). A muzzle brake is also installed to reduce flash, “bouncing” and recoil. Most AVSM models have “Military” or “Schmidt and Bender” optical sights with tenfold magnification. German and Russian soldiers prefer AVSM with Zeiss optics.

"AS 50"

Large caliber semi-automatic rifle from . "AS 50" allows shooters to eliminate targets at long distances. For this purpose, incendiary or explosive ammunition is used. This rifle is perfect for destroying infantry and light armored vehicles. And the installed optics guarantees accurate target destruction at a distance of 1500 meters.
