CZ-455: small-caliber hunting carbine from the Czech Republic

There is probably no weapon around which there would be no controversy: whether it is good, bad, what it is suitable for and what it is not suitable for. Doesn't happen with rare exceptions. One such exception is the CZ 455, a small-bore bolt-action rifle from Česká zbrojovka. When the question arises of choosing a bolt action for calibers .17 HMR, .22 LR and . 22 WMR - CZ 455 seems to have virtually no alternative.

Absolutely everything in the carbine is aimed at obtaining maximum accuracy and ease of shooting:

  • The CNC-milled receiver from a single piece allows you to assemble the carbine without gaps, literally right next to each other. This precision assembly reduces vibration and vibration when firing, improving repeatability;
  • A cold-forged suspended barrel also adds accuracy - the uniform geometry of the rifling and the barrel as a whole increases the stability of the bullet, and gives it a uniform rotational impulse after exiting the barrel;
  • Of course, a carbine for precision shooting has an adjustable trigger mechanism, which allows you to predict and adjust the course of descent to the shooter;
  • A wide selection of interchangeable anatomical chassis, including those from third-party manufacturers, makes it possible to adapt the weapon to the shooter. There are even children's boxes with reduced dimensions.

So imagine a lightweight rifle with perfectly fitted parts, working with a pleasant rustle of mechanics, a soft trigger, almost imperceptible recoil and sub-minute accuracy - this will be the CZ 455 carbine.

The carbine is suitable for hunting small upland game, fur-bearing animals, hare and even roe deer (in calibers .22 WMR and .17 HMR), although in the latter case skill is required from the hunter in order not to leave a wounded animal. The rifle is perfect for sport shooting at 100-150 meters, varmint shooting, recreational shooting and for training young shooters.

Modifications of CZ 455

As you can already understand, the CZ 455 is a case where there is no problem of choice, because it does not have adequate competitors for the same price. However, this is not entirely true: without external competition in its niche, it successfully competes with itself.

There are not just a lot of modifications - there are as many as 34 of them in our stores alone, and there are also small-scale modifications.

Therefore, we physically cannot describe all performances in detail, but instead we will focus only on the most basic ones, dividing them into groups.

CZ 455 Standard

The basic version of the rifle is available with a 525mm barrel in .22 LR and . 22 WMR with a magazine for 5 or 10 places. Unpretentious, reliable, relatively light, with a classic beech stock and butt, and simple steel rear sight and front sight. A universal hunting option.

CZ 455 Synthetic

“American” version of the carbine with a synthetic stock, a butt with a low cheekpiece and a thickened barrel. This version does not have sights and is intended for shooting with optics.

CZ 455 Scout

A short compact version with a barrel length of 406 millimeters and weighing only about 2.3 kilograms. The carbine is suitable as an expeditionary one, or as a weapon for teaching children how to shoot.

CZ 455 FS

A very unusual version of the carbine, with a full-size stock right up to the muzzle, like classic rifles of the first half of the 20th century. The carbine also has a traditional Bavarian-style stock with a semicircular cheekpiece. An excellent rifle for collectors and connoisseurs of unusual weapons.

CZ 455 Forest edition

Hunting version of the carbine with a long barrel - 630 millimeters. Suitable for shooting at a distance of up to 200-250 meters, since the long barrel improves the already high flatness of the bullet’s flight.

CZ 455 LUX and LUX II

Luxury modifications of the basic carbine, with a lacquered Turkish walnut stock, a Bavarian stock and a special finishing treatment of metal parts. LUX and LUX II differ in barrel length: in the first version it is 525 millimeters, and in the second 630.

CZ 455 Super Match and Ultra Match

Modification of a carbine for sports. It uses a precision match barrel with 12 grooves of rifling and a Bavarian stock with a high cheekpiece for ease of use with open sights. The sights are also adjustable in all planes, allowing you to adapt to the shooter.

The Ultra Match version has a long barrel of 630 millimeters.

CZ 455 Professional

Carbine with pre-installed DTK, adjustable sights and synthetic stock. The DTK allows you to reduce the already small toss of the barrel, reduces the flash and slightly dissipates the sound of the shot - all this makes it possible to quickly make a second aimed shot at game, which can be very useful during commercial hunting.

CZ 455 Varmint and Varmint Evolution

A series of carbines with increased accuracy for varminting. The barrels for these carbines are made thick-walled and heavy, making it possible to reduce longitudinal vibrations when firing and increase accuracy. It differs from the match series in the slightly flatter flight of the bullet and the lack of sighting devices. The carbine is fully designed to work with an optical sight.

The Evolution modification features a lightweight frame stock in interesting colors.

CZ 455 Thumbhole

Version of varmint carbines with a heavy stock made of laminated solid wood, with a hole for a pistol grip.

CZ 455 Mini Sniper

A varmint rifle with a "tactical" stock that makes it look like military sniper rifles. Interesting solutions include a rubber ball on the bolt handle and a Picattini rail included. The rifle does not have standard sights.

Summing up, we can safely say that the CZ 455 is a carbine that definitely deserves its place in the safe. And although this is not the first thing worth spending a pink license on, every shooter should have such a rifle in his arsenal.

Multiply the pleasure of small-caliber shooting with the excellent quality of processing and fitting of rifle parts, its grip and accurate shooting - and you will get the best small-caliber bolt action in its class.

Just pick up the CZ 455 and you'll see why we praise it so much. Well, you can do this in any of our stores in the “World of Hunting” chain.

Disassembly of CZ 452

The magazine is removed, the rifle is removed from the safety; The bolt handle rises and retracts; Keeping the hook pressed, remove the bolt; The screws are unscrewed; The barrel and the box are separated. The purchased rifle must be cleaned - remove the factory grease. Use a soft cloth to wipe off all the grease until it is dry. Long-term use requires rigorous cleaning: a solvent mixture and a cleaning brush are used. The canal lubricated with the solution is kept for a quarter of an hour and thoroughly cleaned. It is very convenient to clean steel components with a toothbrush and a wooden scraper. The solution intended for the barrel is strictly contraindicated, as it will cause rust. Kerosene or oil will do. After cleaning, be sure to check for the absence of microparticles.

Description of the CZ 455 carbine

Small-caliber bolt-action repeating rifles chambered for a rimfire cartridge.

The 455 series was created based on a design developed by gunsmith Josef Koucký back in 1947. Minor changes have been made to it. For example, there is a smooth grip between the pistol grip and the butt, making the stock more comfortable to use.

  • The barrel became cantilevered, making it possible to change it. Otherwise, the design has not undergone any significant changes. The trigger and impact mechanisms remained the same, only the shape of the safety flag was changed. On the receiver cover, instead of two longitudinal grooves for mounting optics, there is a full-fledged dovetail-type strap.
  • A sharp visual difference is the transition line between the receiver and the breech. In its predecessors it was conical, but in the 455th series it was made into a ledge.
  • The main thing is that the model range has expanded significantly, it now includes long-barreled rifles for shooting at a distance of up to 200 meters, varmiting, as well as those with special design and details, such as silver-plated triggers, which increase the status of ownership. It seems that within the framework of this article there is no point in talking about all the models in the series. We will mention only the most interesting, in our opinion.

The description of the CZ 455 carbine is given in this video:

Varieties

  • CZ 455 Ultramatch is a small sniper with a cantilever barrel 630 mm long. Accuracy is ensured by precision processing and an increased number of riflings - twelve of them. The stock is beech, varnished, the pistol grip is steeply set and high. Stock with boar's back comb and Bavarian cheek pad. The rear sight is on a prismatic base with a distance ruler, the front sight is closed and adjustable. There is a dovetail strip. Equipped with a ten-round magazine.
  • The CZ 455 Varmint is a rifle with a weighted match barrel 525 mm long and cantilevered. Stock made of Turkish walnut wood. The stock has a straight comb, the pistol grip is flat and of low height, and the fore-end is straight. Equipped with dovetail strip only. Five-round magazine.
  • CZ 455 Thumbhole is a rifle with a laminated stock (can be gray or yellow) of an unusual shape: with a thumb hole for easy gripping of the handle. The stock has a straight comb and a Monte Carlo type pad. The forend is straight, massive, of the “beaver tail” type. The barrel is match (thick-walled) with stiffening ribs (flutes) to increase strength and effective cooling. Its length is 525 mm. There are no external sights; the receiver has a dovetail rail 11 mm wide. We have a CZ 455 Thumbhole 22 LR, WMR carbine on sale.
  • CZ 455 Jaguar. A rifle with the longest barrel in the series - 726 mm. The stock is made of Turkish walnut wood, the butt has a boar's back comb. The pistol grip has an original notch in the form of four marks from the claws of a jaguar. Jaguar calligraphic engraving on the forend. The rifle is equipped with an adjustable sector rear sight, the scale of which has the number 200. It is the trigger that is coated with a layer of silver.

There is also a carbine CZ 455 STANDART 22LR, FOREST EDITION, VARMINT EVOLUTION 22LR AND LUX 22LR, MUZZLE THREAD, CZ 455 SYNTHETIC 22 LR.

Advantages and disadvantages

A real rifle, without any small caliber discounts, with excellent ballistic qualities. Cantilever trunks.

  • A detachable magazine holds five or even ten rounds, which is rare even on “adult” weapons. There is a subtlety in its design - it is in-line, so the charging process is not so simple. In addition, it cannot be passed through the window in the receiver.
  • Very reliable locking system. A bolt with one lug located at the handle. The 452 series rifles have two such stops. Designers of other brands limit themselves to placing the handle in the groove of the stock.
  • A well-made stock that fits perfectly into the shoulder when shooting offhand. Unfortunately, it is varnished - not a very practical solution for a hunting weapon.
  • In all models, to adjust the force on the trigger, it is necessary to separate the stock.
  • The safety locks the firing pin. Therefore, even if the trigger is accidentally pressed, the weapon remains safe.
  • The appearance of the rifles is spoiled by the sharp, stepwise transition from the receiver to the breech.
  • It is now possible to change the barrel within a group of rimfire cartridges.
  • The dovetail rail is not universal and is not compatible with most optical sights that accept a Picatinny rail.

The weight of the rifles is somewhat surprising. Standard models with 525 mm barrels weigh the same as a CZ 527 rifle chambered for a low-pulse 5.6 mm centerfire cartridge. With a long and match barrel, their weight exceeds 3 kilograms.

Purpose

For the most part, these are sporting rifles. You can hunt with them only small fur-bearing animals or upland game.

Construction CZ 452 22LR

The progenitor of small things: review of the legendary Toz-8 rifle

The CZ 452 22LR has a fairly powerful receiver, about the same as that of the CZ 527 model. Thanks to it, the visual perception of a small thing elevates it to an adult rifle. Symbolic recoil allows you to install sights on this model that quickly die on large-caliber weapons. The same applies to rings - you can safely take a cheap Chinese fake, they will last a long time. With a total length of 830 mm. The weight of the CZ 452 is only 1.8 kg, which does not cause any difficulties when shooting even for girls or teenagers training under the supervision of adults.

Gate

The CZ 452 shutter assembly contains 9 spare parts. Using precision casting technology, a steel bolt stem is produced, the production of which is completed by mechanical processing. Having put high strength first, Czech gunsmiths did not care too much about the dimensions of the bolt. As a result, it turned out to be a little bulky, considering the 22lr caliber used. The stem is multifunctional, does not rotate and serves to attach a rotary coupling that cocks the firing pin and locks the breech. The production of the coupling itself is carried out similarly to the stem: mandatory mechanical processing after precision casting. Its screw surface serves to prevent an accidental shot and to cock the hammer. To ensure unhindered removal of the ejector for cleaning, the designers installed it together with the reflector sleeve in an unconventional way: in longitudinal grooves.

Receiver

The receiver of the CZ 452 can be considered one of the most durable elements of the carbine. It is made of steel. The cylindrical part has walls of such thickness that it could easily withstand the use of more powerful ammunition. Firing efficiency is ensured by a large cross section. The optics can be mounted on a dovetail. On the right is the cartridge ejector window. There is an annular groove in the rear part to support the coupling; for the trigger - cutouts. At the bottom there is a connector for the magazine shaft. The shaft itself is made of nylon: reliable and high quality. The material is resistant to organic solvents and severe frosts. There is a spring-loaded latch in front of the shaft.

Shop

The manufacturer offers 2 types of stores: 5 and 10 local. For their manufacture, the same material was used as for the shaft. The difficulty of supplying a charge is explained by the design of the 22 LR - it is old, and loading is carried out by two bevels, and not by a spring. The stable functioning of the magazine is ensured by its manufacturing technology and material, but as soon as the plastic is erased from the bevels, the mechanism stops working even with a small push. The manufacturer guarantees protection of the magazine from corrosion throughout the entire operational period.

Trigger

The simple and reliable trigger mechanism is modeled after the Wichester 70. It is based on a self-release sear and a spring-loaded hook - there are no frills, not even a body, since the hook covers the sear. It limits the bolt and holds the firing pin. It is turned off by a pin equipped with the trigger. The increased length of the trigger spring provides the hook with uniform and smooth movements. You can increase the smoothness and uniformity of the stroke yourself: the engagement surface is treated with sandpaper.

Sighting mechanism

The rear sight and front sight, which represent the sighting mechanism, are quite well made. They can be adjusted with a small screwdriver and a chuck. The base of the front sight is steel, pressed onto the barrel. Without looking closely, the transition is not noticeable at all. The front sight itself is located in the “swallow’s nest” groove in the upper part of the base. Sheet steel is used for the spring earpiece. The sight is a sector type, adjustable in the range of 25-200 m, each position is marked. There is a rear sight on the back of the rail.

Lodge

For the manufacture of the semi-pistol stock, light walnut wood was chosen; The top of the product is varnished. The stock has a very comfortable shape, does not bother you when shooting, there are notches on the neck. All grooves were made with special equipment with high precision. The stock is equipped with: a trigger guard, which does not fit into the design at all; a sling swivel - a ring with a screw, which require constant care; a plastic butt plate.

Sporting rifle CZ-455 in .22 Long Rifle caliber

General description of the CZ ZKM 452 “Scout” rifle

The Czech rifle CZ ZKM 452 “Scout” has the following design features:

  • This carbine is a classic bolt-action rifle with a longitudinally sliding bolt with two lugs;
  • The ammunition used is small-caliber .22LR rimfire cartridges;
  • The barrel of the CZ ZKM 452 carbine, like most modern weapon barrels, is made by cold forging. Since this is a rifled weapon, it has 16 grooves;
  • In order to prevent premature rust, all metal parts of the rifle are covered with high-quality bluing. An exception is made only for the bolt stem;
  • The CZ ZKM 452 semi-pistol stock is made of high-quality walnut. To give it a more attractive appearance, the manufacturer coated it with transparent varnish;
  • The boar-back stock has a curved comb. The forend is made in European weapons traditions and has a rosette finish.

Operating principle

  • The rifles have an in-line magazine, so loading through the cartridge ejector window is possible with only one cartridge. The magazine is removed by pressing the latch located in front of it on the forend. The cartridges are placed in it from the front edge to the rear. The previous ones must be pressed in with your finger. The magazine flanges hold the cartridge case at the last third of its length.
  • The magazine is installed in place with a characteristic click. After this, you can open the shutter and pull it back. The role of the magazine cut-off is played by the ridge on the lower stem of the bolt. He also pushes the cartridge out of the magazine, after which it is fed into the chamber. The firing pin is cocked when the bolt handle is turned down.
  • To put the safety on, move the flag on the butt plate forward. So that the red dot closes. The trigger is also blocked.
  • When storing a weapon, you must unload the rifle: remove the magazine, open the bolt and make sure there is no cartridge in the chamber. While pushing the bolt forward, keep the trigger pressed to prevent the firing pin from cocking.

Loading and firing the CZ 455 carbine is shown in this video:

Shutter CZ-452

The action of the Czech carbine consists of nine separate parts. The bolt stem is made of high-quality steel, which eliminates accidental breakage when manipulating it. For the manufacture of shutter parts, precision casting technology is used in production. Unlike domestic small-caliber carbines, all parts of the CZ ZKM 452 bolt are subjected to careful machining.

One of the features of the model is that the bolt does not match the dimensions of the rifle. The bolt is the same as in other modifications of the CZ-452, and the rifle itself is more miniature. On the other hand, this provides the weapon with reliability and durability.

The hammer has a special channel designed for the mainspring, as well as a groove for the fuse rod. As with most rifles, it is not recommended to empty the trigger as this can seriously damage the firing pin. A damaged firing pin will have to be replaced, otherwise it will not function normally, which will lead to misfires.

Disassembly

  1. Remove the magazine.
  2. Open the shutter and move it back.
  3. Pull the trigger and remove the bolt.
  4. Remove two screws - one behind the trigger guard, the other in front of the magazine release.
  5. Remove the metal trim (trigger guard and hopper frame), remove the magazine hopper.
  6. Separate the stock from the receiver with the barrel and trigger mechanism.

If it is necessary to replace the barrel, unscrew two screws on the upper edge of the receiver, at its front edge, and remove the breech from it.

To disassemble the bolt, rest the buttplate of the firing pin against the table, turn the safety catch to the “Fire” position and remove it. Loosen the pressure, remove the firing pin with the mainspring, and remove the bolt handle. Further disassembly is possible only in a weapons workshop.

Reviews and price of the CZ 455 small rifle are listed below.

The CZ 455 FS

Features of the CZ ZKM 452 stock

The stock is made of high-quality walnut wood, and this wood is of light shades, and covered with several layers of varnish. The gun is very flexible, which allows people with different anatomical features to shoot from the carbine without experiencing any particular discomfort. The neck of the rifle stock has a notch that prevents your hand from slipping.

The incredible accuracy of fitting the stock to metal components, compared to domestic analogues, is explained by the use of special equipment with computer settings. This equipment allows you to make grooves in the rifle stock with millimeter precision.

The stock is equipped with the following additional components:

  • Plastic butt plate;
  • Swivel swivel for attaching a weapon belt;
  • Trigger guard with lower cylinder.

The trigger guard does not fit into the design of the rifle and significantly reduces the appearance of the product.

Similar models

  • The .22 LR small-bore rifle with interchangeable barrels is manufactured by the Finnish company SAKO. The SAKO Quad rifle has a plastic semi-pistol stock, very simple in shape and similar to the Remington 707. The barrels can be changed without disassembling the rifle. To do this, the screw on the underside of the forend is unscrewed and the barrel is separated from the stock. She weighs 2.6 kilograms.
  • Among small-caliber models, we also recommend looking at Remington 770, Remington 597, CZ ZKM 452 Scout, TOZ-99, Anschutz 525.

A review of the use of the CZ 455 carbine is given in this video:

Long story…

Initially, the CZ 455 model was created as a “small gun” for hunting and sports and recreational shooting. Without exaggeration, its longitudinally sliding bolt is “created” for an annular flammable cartridge. The “classic” design was characteristic of models designed in 1947 based on prototypes from Josef Koucky.

Main design features:

  • Powerful “cantilever” barrel, manufactured using interchangeable element technology. The trigger mechanism, flag-type safety and the shape of the flag itself were left over from its predecessor. The only innovations are dovetail mounts for optical devices and a reliable bracket of the same name for placing gadgets.
  • However, careful differences emerged in the exterior - the transitional “section” between the receiver and the breech was separated for accurate model identification. In model No. 455 this part was designed with an indentation, while in the previous ones it was distinguished by a conical shape.
  • The main innovations are the significantly “enriched” model range of the Czech manufacturer. “The catalog has grown fatter” due to “long-barreled guns” capable of firing at a distance of up to two hundred meters. There are also small upgrades, such as varmiting and special (piece) parts. Of course, such innovations most often have a “status” character, for example, silver-plated triggers and engraved stocks.

Of course, there are many more souvenir copies than practical ones, so this article will only talk about fully working modifications.

The pride of Czech gunsmiths: the CZ 455 Standart carbine

Conclusion

The technical characteristics of the CZ 527 223 REM and its low cost attract novice hunters. Athletes choose this model as their first weapon: the carbine produces excellent accuracy results. Its maintenance is simple, the design is standard, so many owners themselves can change many components in the event of a breakdown.

The main disadvantage is the variable build quality, which is why each copy has to be carefully inspected in the store. The copied bolt group from the Mauser 98 only slightly resembles what Czech engineers are so proud of.

Subtypes and subclasses

In total, many modifications of the “Standard” were released, some even began to be manufactured under a different name and even as products of a different line.

The main varieties of “Czech”:

  • “Ultramatch” is a sniper version, featuring a 630 mm barrel. Twelve grooves increase shooting accuracy, and the high-positioned pistol grip has a beneficial effect on the ergonomics of the design. The beech varnished stock is equipped with a boar-back comb and a Bavarian cheek pad. The rear sight is improved with a distance ruler. The front sight is adjustable, closed type. The magazine carries ten rounds of ammunition.
  • "Varmint" - has a weighted match barrel (525 mm in length) and is improved by a general cantilever design. The magazine “carries” only five rounds. The exterior is quite familiar: a stock made of Turkish walnut, a straight comb of the butt, a gently sloping low pistol grip, and a straight forearm.
  • “Thumbhole” has an unusual design. There is a special hole for the thumb, which ensures comfortable shooting. The straight comb and Monte Carlo cushion enhance ergonomics. The laminated stock (gray, yellow or green) does not have external sights. The straight forend is made using the “beaver tail” method, the match barrel is reinforced with special stiffening ribs and reaches 525 mm in length. There is a dovetail strip.
  • "Jaguar" is the largest of the series (barrel - 726 mm). The appearance is similar to Varmint, but there is a beautiful notch on the handle - “jaguar claw marks”. The forend is covered with an engraving with the inscription “jaguar” in Latin. The trigger is silver plated. The adjustable sector rear sight allows for targeted shooting even at very long distances.

“Standard” has many smaller subtypes, differing in color or formula of the anti-corrosion coating.

Tactical parameters and description of the carbine

The performance characteristics of the models are quite good for weapons in this price category.

Performance characteristics of the CZ 455 Standart:

  • principle of operation - with a longitudinally sliding bolt;
  • caliber - 22 LR;
  • weight (excluding ammunition and additional equipment) - 2.8 kg;
  • total length - 98 centimeters;
  • trunk length - 52.5 cm;
  • sights - front and rear sights;
  • magazine capacity - 5 units.

The reliability of the weapon is explained by the use of high-alloy steel - chrome-molybdenum, made by cold forging. The rifle is a bolt-action variety chambered for a rimfire cartridge. It is possible to replace barrels with cartridges of the same group of a larger caliber. The connection to the receiver is ensured by locking pins.

The cylindrical receiver is made by milling from a single piece. The two halves of the plank - dovetail - are located on the upper edges of the structure. The bolt has only one lug in front of the handle. The bolt is equipped with two extractors. The trigger consists of a return spring, a sear and a hook. Trigger force can be adjusted. The removable magazine “carries” cartridges in one row. The magazine release is securely hidden on the front of the forend.

Advantages and disadvantages of the model

Without exaggeration, this carbine is a hunting “sniper”, and even a small caliber is not an obstacle to high power. That is why the number of its advantages far outweighs the number of disadvantages.

Advantages of the Czech “Standard”:

  • The convenience of a removable magazine, the volume of which can be increased from five to ten rounds.
  • Ultra-reliable locking system.
  • High quality workmanship of the stock, coating with environmentally friendly varnish and impregnation of wood for use of the weapon in various climatic conditions.
  • A reliable safety lock that blocks the firing pin and negates the risk of a shot if the trigger is accidentally pressed.
  • Possibility of changing barrels within rimfire cartridges.
  • The brutal appearance of the skeleton, which is created by a sharp transition from the breech to the receiver.

The CZ 455 Standart has only two disadvantages.

These include:

  • Relatively large mass, which grows geometrically with increasing trunk length.
  • The dovetail rail, which is not considered universal, is the opposite of a Picatinny rail and is therefore not compatible with most riflescopes.

However, you need to remember that this “Czech” is mainly intended for sports shooting. It can only be used to hunt game birds and small animals.

The pride of Czech gunsmiths: the CZ 455 Standart carbine

Receiver and magazine CZ-452

What is a caliber?
small-caliber rimfire cartridges The receiver is made of high-quality steel. During the creation process, proposals were repeatedly made to make it from a lighter alloy, but specialists from the Czech company CZ were extremely skeptical about this idea. A lighter alloy is not able to provide the necessary strength, and the use of thick-walled steel allows the use of reinforced Magnum cartridges for shooting without any consequences for the rifle.

Magazines for the presented weapons come in two types: 5 or 10 rounds. These two magazines are very reliable, despite the considerable complexity of their design, which is provided by the design of the .22LR cartridge case. A special feature of the store is the method of feeding cartridges. It is provided not by a feeder spring, as in most similar models, but by two special bevels, which are located near the lips. The production of bevels must be impeccable, otherwise the cartridge will skew, which is unacceptable for a manufacturer who values its reputation.
