Personal protective equipment, groups, tactical and technical data, procedure for use

Oleg Shovkunenko

Currently, the military equipment market offers the widest range of bulletproof protection, both Russian and foreign made. However, the standards of different manufacturing countries differ quite significantly from each other. For this very reason, it is often very difficult for a non-specialist to objectively assess the protective properties of a particular body armor or helmet. Such a mistake can be fatal and cost a human life. To eliminate this very dangerous confusion, I have tried to summarize all the data into a common table, which compares the most common protection classes of body armor, helmets, shields and other equipment.

For comparison, the following state standards were taken: 1. GOST R 50744–95/1999 - standard of the All-Russian Research Institute of Standardization of the State Standard of Russia as amended in 1999. 2. GOST R 50744–95/2014 - standard of the All-Russian Research Institute of Standardization of the State Standard of Russia with amendments from 2014. 3. CEN is a pan-European standard. 4. DIN - German Police Department standard 5. NIJ - US National Institute of Justice standard

Dmitry 03/22/15 It is strange that according to new standards, the penetrating power of the Yarygin pistol (class Br3) is equated to the penetrating power of the AKM and AK-74. It seems to me that these are two completely incommensurable types of weapons. What a machine gun can penetrate is completely beyond the power of a pistol.

Oleg Shovkunenko Dmitry, you are missing one very important detail: it is assumed that the Br3 class from Yarygin (PYa) will be fired with a bullet with a heat-strengthened core. In addition, currently at the development stage there is a PYa chambered for a special 9x21 mm armor-piercing cartridge, designed specifically for hitting targets protected by body armor, helmets and other special equipment. So, soon Yarygin’s pistol will turn into a very powerful weapon, and you will have to defend against it like you would against an AKM.

Owl 04/09/15 New class Br6 - is this a joke? I can’t imagine a bulletproof vest that can withstand a bullet from the Utes!

Oleg Shovkunenko To be honest, I’m surprised myself, but if smart heads decided to introduce the Br6 class, then it’s probably for a reason. There are probably already some developments for protection against large caliber.

Ilya 10.26.15 Apparently, the classification is not only for body armor. Because 12.7, even if it doesn’t break through, will break everything. Most likely, the protection class of armored vehicles.

Timur 05/10/17 Good afternoon, dear Oleg, I would like to turn to you for help as a specialist in the field of military affairs. I am interested in the details of the Barmitsa and Permyachka equipment, as well as your opinion regarding possibly existing products with the following designations - 6B9, 6B10, 6B16, 6B29, 6B30, 6B32, 6B37, 6B39, 6B40, 6B41, 6B42.

Oleg Shovkunenko Timur, greetings! If you noticed, in my notes about NIB I almost didn’t mention “Permyachki”, “Barmitsy”, “Warriors”, etc. This is because this is not something specific, something that can be touched and tested in practice (such as a helmet, knife, glasses or body armor), but just projects or programs for creating uniforms, equipment, all kinds of accessories, etc.

Such programs work approximately as follows: One of the companies producing body armor and helmets in some poorly understood way wins a tender for supplies to the Ministry of Defense. This same office purchases or orders their products from other smaller manufacturers: boots, jackets, backpacks, unloaders, etc. For the most part, all this is complete crap and cannot hold a candle to its foreign counterparts. Then all this, so to speak, product, complete with its own body armor, is resold for the needs of the army. As a result of this scheme, sets of individual combat equipment (CIE) of different years of production and even different batches can differ significantly from each other. They simply included those devices that suppliers are currently producing or were able to purchase. This is where all possible indices 2 come from; m1; n2, etc.

Now let's get back to quality. Just one example: Watch the video footage from Syria. Will you find fighters of the Russian Special Operations Forces there, who are dressed in the vaunted “Barmitsy” or “Ratniki”? I think no. Professionals always choose the best for themselves, and this is clearly not the consumer goods we are talking about now. By the way, somewhere in my closet I have a set of NATO uniforms made of ballistic fabric lying around (a similar one is included in all Russian CBIE sets). Although the clothes are equipped with several ventilation channels, it is impossible to stay in them for a long time, especially in the warm season. You sweat like in a bathhouse, and your whole body begins to burn. The only exception is, perhaps, wet, rainy weather, when the amount of moisture in the environment significantly exceeds the amount of moisture under the lining. That's when you choose the lesser of two evils. This is probably why I have never seen this uniform on military personnel. Everyone is sporting the old, proven HB.

Now regarding the indices 6B9, 6B10, 6B16, 6B29, 6B30, 6B32, etc. I don’t know for sure, but most likely these are samples of NIB that were tested at the GRAU, but for some reason were rejected by it and did not go into production.

Helmet safety classes! How to choose REAL head protection?

Ski helmet protection classes

Safety is the most important component of extreme sports. For skiers, snowboarders, and freeriders, head protection is mandatory in professional competitions. Even when riding for pleasure, you should not neglect precautions - treatment will cost many times more.

Variety of helmets

A ski helmet is the only piece of sports equipment that has safety standards. Helmets may vary in design, with hard and soft ears, but they all consist of three main parts.

  • The outer shell is made of highly durable polycarbonate, protecting the head.
  • The inner surface is made of polystyrene, shock-absorbing when dropped.
  • Soft, breathable lining for a comfortable ride.

Helmets can be of different designs. The open design (no lower part to protect the jaw) is suitable for slalom or downhill racing on a groomed course. A closed snowboard helmet - full-face with monolithic protection protects the head from falls and is popular among boardercross, halfpipe, and freeride professionals.

Helmet protection level

Any helmet model undergoes a serious strength test before being put into mass production. Testing involves single or serial blows to the outer surface of varying strengths. For example, to obtain the EN 1077 standard, a helmet is thrown 5 times onto a cast iron plate from a height of one and a half meters. If the acceleration upon contact exceeds 250g and the impact energy exceeds 69 J, the test is considered failed.

ASTMF 2040 protection class is used in the USA; to obtain this standard, helmets are tested not only on a flat, but also on a spherical cast iron surface. When thrown from a two-meter height, the acceleration of the structure should not exceed 300 g, and the energy should not exceed 98 J. In addition, the helmet strap is tested at different temperature conditions.

Buying a ski helmet marked ShellRS 98 means completely freeing yourself from worries. This is the most demanding protection. To pass the tests, a helmet must have increased safety properties; this mark is awarded to heavy helmets intended primarily for motorsports.

Helmet safety classes

For safe skiing, you need to choose not only a beautiful and comfortable helmet, but also a helmet that is reliable in use. Ski and snowboard helmets are divided into 2 classes based on general safety:

  • Safety class A, which implies a more impressive weight of the structure.
  • Safety class B, which has optimal indicators for weight, ventilation and comfort.

You can buy a snowboard helmet with class B safety in the RurocShop store. Here, every lover of skiing or rock climbing can choose any model with protection class B. A variety of designs and colors will allow you to choose a stylish and reliable helmet!
