History of the development and appearance of the Yarygin pistol (PYa)
The Yarygin pistol was born in difficult times. In 1990, the USSR Ministry of Defense set the task of developing a personal weapon, which was planned to replace the previously used Makarov pistol.
"Rook" versus "Glock": we are no worse!
Several enterprises accepted the challenge, including an arms factory in Izhevsk. There, Vladimir Aleksandrovich Yarygin took up the implementation of the project. The main concept of the new weapon was the high-power 9X19 Parabellum combat cartridge. Firstly, it improved the tactical data of future weapons. Secondly, the modernized pistol could be made to order for European countries.
The project was completed in 1993, and all tests and examinations were completed only in 1998.
The Yarygin army pistol was tested by the troops and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. This was not the only new pistol, because other weapons-related enterprises also received the task. In 1999, the Klimovsky plant presented its product, which received the name Gyurza. However, it was V.A. Yarygin’s pistol that won the state competition in 2000.
Weapon Combat Check
This check is carried out when:
- the arrival of new weapons in the unit;
- after repairing the pistol;
- in case of violation of the characteristics of the Yarygin pistol, the photo of which is presented in the article.
The combat check is carried out in the presence of an experienced shooter and the employee to whom the pistol is assigned. Before inspection, the weapon is thoroughly inspected and faults are eliminated.
Do not check in windy weather. Shooting is carried out at a target at a distance of 25 meters. In this case, a prerequisite is the use of cartridges from the same batch. The target is fixed on a shield, the width of which is 1 meter and the width is 0.5 meters.
The aiming area is a point on the target, and the aiming point is at the shooter's eye level.
The fight is checked from a standing position, while the hand should not touch the stop. The shooter fires 4 shots. At the end, the accuracy of fire is checked and the average point of impact is calculated.
Model description
The main difference of the new product was the trigger mechanism with automatic installation of the trigger on the safety. Another important innovation is a two-row magazine, which made it possible to double its capacity compared to the PM.
Another addition is the ability to change the design depending on the shooter’s preference.
That is, a left-handed person can move the magazine latch from the left side of the weapon to the right. The fuse box is duplicated on both sides.
Equipment
In terms of configuration, the “Rook” is practically no different from the PM. It has a frame, a shutter, a return spring, and a shutter, which, however, is detached from the frame, unlike the PM. The barrel is chrome-plated on the inside, making it easy to maintain. Overhead plastic handles cover a regular two-row magazine.
The design of the Yarygin pistol and its technical characteristics
The PYa is designed for 9 mm caliber, but the length of the sleeve is 19 mm, and not 18 mm, like the PM. This is a European standard cartridge. Otherwise, the pistol resembles the PM familiar to everyone.
What will the “Rook” (Yarygina) pistol penetrate? WarGonzo review
The total length of the weapon is 198 mm, barrel length is 112.5 mm. Weight is 950 g - with magazine, but without cartridges. With cartridges, the weight of the pistol increases by 171 g.
The magazine holds 18 rounds.
The barrel is not rigidly attached to the bracket; during a shot, the barrel and bolt are pulled back together, disengaging only for a short moment.
Scheme of work
Mechanism operation diagram:
- The trigger is removed from the sear and sets the firing pin in motion.
- There is an impact on the primer and a fire begins.
- The bullet, accompanied by burnt powder gases, flies out of the barrel. She pushes the bolt and barrel back.
- The short stroke of the barrel ends with disengagement from the bolt, which moves back, throwing out the empty cartridge case, hitting it against the reflector of the bolt window.
- At the extreme point, the bolt cocks the hammer and moves in the opposite direction, using a return spring. As it moves, the bolt removes the top cartridge in the magazine and pulls it towards the chamber. At the same moment, coupling with the barrel occurs, and they continue to move forward together.
- The barrel is locked with the loaded cartridge, and the pistol is ready to fire again.
Additional equipment and accessories
Additional equipment includes the so-called Weaver bar. This device allows you to mount various accessories under the barrel. For example, a tactical flashlight or a laser target designator. This could be 2PS "Klesch" from or X300 from.
Advantages and disadvantages of the Yarygin pistol
The advantages of the PY need to be considered in relation to its predecessors, for example, personal small arms like the Makarov. A tall 19 mm cartridge gives the bullet more momentum due to the larger amount of gunpowder, that is, the bullet’s penetration and stopping power is increased.
New! MPYA – Yarygin Pistol Modernized and compact version. Concern Kalashnikov at Army 2018
Another undoubted advantage is the increased magazine capacity. The balanced operation of all mechanisms and the movable barrel of the “Rook” made it possible to significantly reduce recoil when fired. Ergonomics and the presence of marks on the front and rear sights improved offhand shooting. The trigger is much softer than that of the same Makarov. According to estimates using dynamometer equipment, it is almost 4 times.
Like every military weapon, there were several shortcomings. Experts say the main disadvantage is the size of the pistol. It is slightly thicker and longer than the usual Makarov. This makes it difficult for police officers working in plain clothes to carry it concealed. Indeed, it is very difficult to hide a large army pistol under a jacket.
They also note that the handle is somewhat angular, which makes it difficult to hold the weapon with one hand. Especially if the shooter’s hand is not very large with short fingers.
It is difficult for experienced shooters to get used to the fact that the trigger is hidden on all sides, and it is difficult to release it with one finger. You must use a fuse for this. But with practice, a habit develops, and this drawback ceases to hinder the shooter.
Countries that use this pistol
Currently, weapons are used by law enforcement agencies and paramilitary security structures of the following countries:
- Armenia - PY employees of the National Security Service and other security forces are arming themselves. Sports variations are acquired by the national federation of practical shooting;
- Belarus - 15 units were purchased under government orders for the training center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus;
- Kazakhstan - since 2003, approved as a training and sports weapon, four years later - as a service and combat weapon;
- Lithuania - purchased by private security companies;
- Russia - in March 2003 it was adopted by army units. At the end of 2005 it acquired the status of a premium weapon. A few months later it became one of the possible means of personal protection of Russian prosecutors and prosecutors' office investigators. In 2008, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs began to switch from PM to PYa. A year later, FSSP employees were the last to be armed. Later, some military personnel of the internal troops and employees of the special forces units “Grom” of the Federal Drug Control Service switched to PY.
The pistol is also sold abroad through Rosoboronexport in the form of a weapon with a polymer frame, labeled as MP-446 “VIKING” (not to be confused with the sports variation MP-446C).
What opinion do you have about PY? Have you ever heard reviews from security forces about “Makarov’s replacement”? Perhaps you held in your hands or even bought yourself a traumatic or pneumatic version of Yarygin - what can you say about this self-defense weapon? Please share your opinions in the comments! Or ask questions about PY, and we will definitely give answers.
Various variations and modifications
Overall, the pistol is very successful, so much so that several modifications were released simultaneously with the base model:
- Export model MP 446 "Viking". This modification differs from the basic one in a lighter polymer frame and a sight with the ability to adjust the distance.
- Sports model MP 446c “Viking”. Customized to the official requirements of the International Practical Shooting Confederation. It has a polymer frame and a magazine with a capacity of 10 rounds. You can use it to train not only in shooting, but also in disassembling and assembling weapons for a while.
- The MP-446C “VIKING-M” modification features an improved design of the magazine and other weapon elements. The frame is polymer, the trigger is made even softer, and a Picatinny rail is installed on the pistol. Work on improving all parts of the weapon has led to it becoming more durable. Now its guaranteed resource is 50,000 shots. The first model had a lifespan of only 4,000 shots.
- The pistol can also be used as a purely civilian weapon. For example, the design of Yarygin’s “Rook” pneumatic pistol is radically different from the firearm version. But the appearance is completely copied from the classic combat model.
- Another copy of MP 443 “Rook”. Its caliber is 13 mm, as the bullets are rubber "Rugger". The magazine capacity of Yarygin's traumatic pistol was reduced to 9 rounds. Otherwise, this is a classic PY - a high-quality and reliable weapon.
- Training and use for other peaceful purposes is carried out on the basis of a special Yarygin SHP pistol, holstered. This means that the classic model has undergone a number of changes that turned it into a weapon for dry firing. This tuning includes: installing a chamber chambered for the 10X31 cartridge into the barrel, removing the combat stop from the breech, installing a bushing in the barrel bore and changing the design of the extractor window.
A certain number of combat weapons were purchased for the award fund of Kyrgyzstan.
Weight and size models of the Yarygin pistol
Modernization of the Grach missile launcher rarely changes its weight and dimensions. However, the emasculated Yarygin still differs from the base model. Its total length is 198 mm and the barrel length is 113 mm.

Rook
The Yarygin pistol is a modern weapon that can cause a lot of controversy. Many experts talk about it as a good replacement for the Makarov pistol. But there are also those who talk about weapons as extremely unreliable and completely unsuitable for use as weapons in the police or army. In this situation, one could say that there are as many opinions as there are people, but this is not the case. The fact is that most of the bad reviews about this pistol are based not on personal experience of use, but on what someone said or read someone’s negative opinion before. Recently, criticism of weapons made by domestic factories has become fashionable, and because of this, this opinion has formed. Yarygin's traumatic pistol breaks all stereotypes about domestic weapons as a combat unit.
