Since online communities criticize IZHMEKH products, I went to the Okhotnik store on Myasnitskaya, asked director Dmitry to show the existing MP-155 guns and tell me how they are sold. He kindly agreed and demonstrated them both in plastic and in wood and answered questions. I will try, based on my knowledge, experience and information received, to talk about this gun and how to choose it in a store.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION MR-155
MP-155 is a smooth-bore self-loading shotgun designed for hunting and amateur shooting on a bench. The operation of the automation is based on the use of the energy of part of the exhausted powder gases when fired. The designers, taking all the best from the MP-153 model, made some changes, improvements and offered hunters a decent gun. The MP-155 allows shooting with cartridges filled not only with lead, but also with steel shot. It is tested to a maximum pressure of 1320 Bar; the use of cartridges giving pressure up to 1050 Bar is allowed.
Guns, depending on the design, are manufactured in the following versions:
with constant choke; with replaceable choke constrictions for firing cartridges with lead and steel shot. It is clear that they are produced in calibers 12/76 and 12/89.
MP-155 is slightly lighter than the previous model. This was achieved by using aluminum alloys in the manufacture of the receiver, placing an automatic engine pulse regulator on a gas piston, which allows the excess pressure of powder gases to be released from the chamber and the arch-type sighting bar.
The safety is not automatic; it is located on the rear of the trigger guard and blocks the trigger. The gun with a plastic butt uses a recoil damping system, which facilitates comfortable shooting with magnum cartridges. The vertical retraction of the butt is regulated by the use of replaceable inserts installed between the rear end of the receiver and the butt.
The gun consists of the following parts and mechanisms:
• barrel (channel diameter 18.4 mm) with a gas chamber; • boxes with grooves on it for installing a sight, a magazine and an interceptor; • a movable gun system, consisting of a piston with a recoil speed regulator, a bolt frame assembly, a reloading handle and a bolt; • return spring; • trigger mechanism (trigger mechanism); • butt and fore-end (wood or plastic).
The gun is manufactured with both a right-hand and left-hand (for left-handed) arrangement of the reloading handle and a window for loading and ejecting spent cartridges. The barrel bore is locked by the rising lug of the bolt wedge, which fits into the bore of the barrel coupling. USM is assembled on a separate basis. To break in the parts and mechanisms of the gun, it is recommended to fire the first 100 shots with 12/70 (“semi-magnum”) cartridges.
CHOOSE A GUN
Choosing a gun, like the East, is a delicate matter. “I take it without looking” does not work with our gunsmiths. Go to the store with a more experienced friend. Take with you a cleaning rod, a clean rag, a new unprimed cartridge case of the required caliber and at least five false cartridges to check the operation of the parts and mechanisms of the gun.
First of all, inspect the gun in disassembled form. Wipe the barrel dry. Inspect it from the outside to see if there is any waviness. Pay attention to how the sighting bar is soldered and whether there are sharp exits of longitudinal or transverse guilloche lines on it. Inspect the muzzle of the barrel. It must be perpendicular to the axis of the bore, without nicks, and the walls must be of equal thickness and have sharp edges.
Pointing the barrel at the border of the dark and light background, look inside; there should be a shadow figure in the form of a regular isosceles triangle. Insert the brought cartridge case into the chamber and inspect the inner surface of the barrel from the muzzle end. You will see shadow rings. They must be strictly concentric and alternate from each other at the same distance. This is an indicator of correct drilling of the barrel.
Inspect the choke constrictions. They should be without flaws. Screw in and out each muzzle device one by one. They should be screwed in flush with the muzzle or slightly recessed to an equal depth. Assemble the gun and figure out where the safety, holder, interceptor buttons and the cartridge cut-off lever are located. Then move the shutter to the rearmost position, it should stop on the delay.
Place the false cartridge into the barrel, press the interceptor button, the “cartridge” should be freely sent into the chamber. Raise the gun to your shoulder several times, aiming at the chosen point, and feel how it fits into your shoulder. Take a few “shots” and feel the descent.
Equip the magazine with the remaining false cartridges and, while jerking the bolt, check their feeding from the magazine into the barrel and removal. Inspect the stock and fore-end. The wood should be free of chips and cracks, the walls of the forend should be of the same thickness. If possible, then, taking fifty rounds of ammunition, go to the stand and check the operation of the automation there.
Do not try to use a file or sandpaper to clean up burrs and marks from the cutter in the receiver and its grooves that allegedly interfere with the operation of the automation. By doing such modifications, you can ruin the gun. The mechanisms will grind themselves during shooting. If the need arises for this, then there are workshops for this purpose that you can entrust the gun to.
A hunter who is not experiencing financial difficulties can order a “classic” (piece) gun with an additional 660 mm long barrel, with various sights and other options. With such a barrel and interchangeable muzzle devices, you can hunt ungulates, shoot small things from under a dog, and practice clay pigeon shooting.
The design of the gun allows for interchangeability of barrels. No matter how much we scold the Izhevsk designers (mostly for the appearance of the gun), we must admit that for the first time a gun was created with such a set of options that not every imported gun can boast of.
I congratulate the designers on the successful MP-155 gun. I hope they will eliminate some of the angularity of the gun and will soon delight us with a new self-loading model with an inertial automatic system.

Advantages and disadvantages
Such a gun will be the best assistant in hunting; it is reliable and does not require special care. And in appearance it will be a wonderful addition to your image of a hunter. If desired, you can change the choke type.
REFERENCE: The gun manufacturer offers changing the barrel length up to 4 times. But the set of calibers is small - 12 and 20 gauges.
The bolt handle has significantly enlarged buttons, which makes the gun more convenient to use. The weight of the weapon became a little lighter, which was achieved by changing the receiver. Now it is made of high quality aluminum.
The new MP-155 model has an extended magazine. The gun handle has become more comfortable. But there are also disadvantages to this weapon. For example, a receiver that has not found practical application.
Video review and comparison of MP-153 and MP-155:
Regarding the advantages: we can also highlight the built-in shock-absorbing mechanism, thanks to which it has become more effective to extinguish the butt plate.
With this gun, you can successfully hunt game, small wild boars and elk, and also use it in sports shooting.
ATTENTION! You can also run into fakes, so when purchasing this weapon for hunting, carefully inspect it and familiarize yourself with the main characteristics of the MP-155 in advance.
Expectations and reality. The serial appearance of the MP-155 Ultima shotgun
Last year, the Kalashnikov concern for the first time showed the “smart gun” MP-155 Ultima, equipped with original fittings and a number of new electronic components. Subsequently, the project was developed, and an updated version of the gun was demonstrated at the Army 2021 forum. It is distinguished by a different composition of equipment on board, functions and capabilities. In this case, we are talking about the serial appearance of the product, and the manufacturer is opening pre-orders.
A year of progress
The first display of the MP-155 Ultima shotgun took place about a year ago as part of the Army 2020 forum.
This product, which has a characteristic appearance and actually represents a new class, naturally attracted attention and became one of the most popular exhibition samples from Kalashnikov. In February 2022, the new gun was demonstrated for the first time at a foreign exhibition - with the same positive results. Over the past year, the existing project has been developed and improved. As a result of these events, several significant changes were made to the design of the gun, affecting the technical and operational characteristics. The updated appearance of the gun was accepted for mass production.
As far as we know, production of MP-155 Ultima products has not yet begun. However, the manufacturer is already collecting pre-orders. For an unusual gun, the buyer will have to pay 130 thousand rubles. Thus, due to the use of a new body kit and electronics, Ultima became the most expensive Kalashnikov product in the civilian smoothbore line.
Ways to improve
The main idea of the MP-155 Ultima project is to rebuild the serial MP-155 smoothbore shotgun using a number of modern components.
The fittings have been completely replaced: original elements made of aluminum alloy and plastic are used. In addition, the stock has its own compact computer with a number of useful functions built into it, and a video camera is placed above the barrel. During the last year's improvements, the key elements of the gun have not changed. The Ultima continues to be based on the barrel, magazine, bolt and trigger assembly from the well-known MP-155 shotgun. This is a 12-gauge gas-operated self-loading system that uses a tubular magazine under the barrel.
Original fittings with a futuristic appearance were developed especially for the “smart” gun. As one can judge, the lodge has not undergone any major changes over the past year. It still has unusual contours, has rails for installing additional equipment and accommodates electronics. Previously, two versions of the gun were demonstrated, with and without a stock. Now we are talking about a single model with the ability to install or remove the butt.
The main changes affected the electronics of the gun. Last year's prototype was equipped with a compact single-board computer Raspberry Pi 4. A modification of the computer was used with 4 GB of RAM and a 32 GB permanent storage device. A computer with a power supply was placed inside the box. The screen with the simplest controls was located on a characteristic influx in front of the neck of the butt.
The serial appearance of the MP-155 Ultima provides for a computer replacement. The type and characteristics of the hardware have not yet been specified. The software is built on the Android system, which should provide certain advantages.
The basic package of the Ultima still includes an HD video camera for installation above the barrel. As before, the video signal is sent to the computer, displayed on the gun’s screen and recorded in memory. All basic functions are also retained. There is a clock with a timer and stopwatch mode, a shot and ammunition counter, a compass, etc. A training mode is provided. Using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the gun can transmit data, incl. video signal to third-party devices.
Despite all the changes, the production version of the MP-155 Ultima has dimensions and weight at the level of experimental products. The length of the gun, with and without a butt, is 1020 or 810 mm. Barrel length – 510 mm; A tubular magazine for 6 rounds is located underneath it. Weight – 4.2 kg.
Place on the market
The development of the MP-155 Ultima smart gun has been completed.
After implementing several important changes and appropriate testing, the product is ready for mass production. The Kalashnikov Concern is already collecting pre-orders, although it does not specify the timing of the start of deliveries. We can expect products to begin shipping within the next few weeks or months. There are certain hopes placed on the Ultima project. Last year, the developers revealed their plans to promote such a gun on the market. Then it was argued that young people and urban residents who showed an interest in weapons and new technologies, but were not interested in purchasing products of a “classic” appearance, were considered as potential buyers.
The software, with a number of important features such as a training mode, should make it easier to learn and use the weapon. In addition, part of the audience should be interested in the possibility of video shooting without the use of third-party cameras.
It can be assumed that the gun will attract the attention of sports shooters competing in the corresponding classes. The presence of a camera and a computer with recording functions will allow you to more effectively analyze the results of your training and determine further plans for preparation.
In the future, if the commercial potential is confirmed, new cameras with improved characteristics may be created for the gun. It is also possible to develop additional programs that solve certain problems. In particular, the audience might be interested in the “intelligent” aiming function, incl. with video signal output to a third-party gadget.
However, the real commercial prospects of the unusual gun are questionable. In the last year, the Ultima product was actively discussed on various platforms, but was mostly criticized, and there were always quite a few people who wanted to get to know it better or even buy it.
With the latest news, such discussions have resumed, and the announced price of the gun has become another reason for sharp criticism of the project and its developers. Thus, the cost is called excessive and does not correspond to the expected costs of producing a gun part, a new “body kit” and a computer.
Expectations and reality
The real commercial potential of the unusual gun will only be assessed in the future, when the Kalashnikov concern begins sending ordered guns to customers and retailers.
The volume of collected pre-orders will show the manufacturer whether it is worth continuing the series, and at the same time the development of a whole area of “smart” weapons for the civilian market. However, it is already clear that the MP-155 Ultima is at least one of the most interesting modern domestic developments in the field of civilian small arms. For the first time in Russian practice, a gun for hunters and sportsmen is equipped with a computer capable of solving various problems and having great potential for further development.
Due to its specific set of functions and high cost, Ultima is unlikely to be able to become a mass product and compete with “traditional” guns in terms of production and sales volumes. However, the value of this project lies not only in its commercial potential. It allowed us to develop a complex of electronics for small arms and a number of other technologies. Such developments in the future may be in demand not only in the civilian, but also in the military sphere. And these are completely different development prospects.
How do the owners respond?
Buyers note good and high-quality combat, as well as such a useful property of the weapon as low recoil when fired.
Some owners say they purchased a low-quality sample. After all, in assembled form it is impossible to determine this. There were also reviews about the weak handle, which quickly breaks, so experienced owners advise purchasing a spare handle for the weapon.
But in general, experienced hunters note the reliability of the MP-155 and its good fighting qualities.
Review after 8 years of using the gun:
Disassembly
It is worth recognizing that domestic shooting devices are in many ways inferior to Western ones, so before purchasing a gun you should test and disassemble it, looking at all the parts and the quality of fastening of all elements. Even better, if there is an opportunity to practically test the MP-155, it is not uncommon for a gun store to have a training range installed.
After purchase, you should disassemble the gun again and use kerosene to rinse the barrel and its box. This is necessary so that possible contamination does not interfere with the stable operation of the weapon. Most often, metal shavings act as contamination, which appear at the factory during the manufacture of weapons.
IMPORTANT! On a disassembled gun, all pins are checked immediately. In particular, the one that secures the firing pin axis, since if it is lost the next time, the gun can no longer be disassembled.
Positive aspects of the MP-155 shotgun
Before purchasing a product, everyone is interested in its benefits. Among the main advantages are the following:
- This type of gun is reliable and unpretentious in operation , which cannot be said about many of its competitors. Breakdowns are extremely rare.
- The presence of an improved gas engine allows it to be adjusted to ammunition with different powder mixture weights.
- It can fire hunting shot made from both lead and steel . There is also the possibility of using replaceable choke constrictions.
- The dimensions of the chambers allow the use of ammunition with cartridge cases of all possible sizes . The manufacturer offers four types of length.
- The installed buttons have been increased in size , making it much more convenient to use. In addition, a mechanism for intercepting cartridges was introduced, making it possible to quickly reload.
- The receiver was made of aluminum , which helped reduce the weight of the gun. This figure brought it closer to imported models.
- It is now possible to add an extension cord , as well as optical trailers.
- The front sight is made of red fiber-optic fiber , which ensures ease of aiming.
- The main part of the trigger mechanism, as well as the part that protects the trigger, is made of polyamide , resistant to external shocks.
- The developers made the wooden part more elegant , and the semi-pistol grip became more sloping.
- The kit contains a set of spacers with which you can change the angle of inclination of the butt to the receiver.
- The design of the rear part of the receiver has also been modernized, which has become much better at dampening recoil.
Cleaning and care
In order for a gun to serve for many years, it is necessary to properly care for it. All parts must be clean and lubricated. Prepare soft napkins in advance.
After each use of the MP-155, you need to rinse the parts for 24 hours, clean them well and dry them. If hunting is carried out in winter, then before cleaning the gun should warm up at room temperature for 2-3 hours. Remember that all cleaning products are solvents, so use them in small quantities.
IMPORTANT! Only good condition of the barrel and other elements will allow for high-quality shooting from the weapon. Gun oil can be used to clean the bore well. Then it, together with the chamber, is thoroughly wiped with a soft cloth.
Use a cleaning rod to remove heavy carbon deposits. To do this, a brass brush, pre-moistened with gun oil, is wound around it. The lubricant is also used when applied to the threads to install choke constrictions.
READ ALSO: Civil defense
Carbon deposits also form on gas chambers, as well as on their components; it also needs to be removed from them.
All solutions for cleaning guns can be purchased at the appropriate departments that sell hunting equipment.
Tuning
The principle of a gas engine is taken as the basis for the operation of the MP-155. When a shot is fired, some of the gunpowder goes down the barrel and is used as reloading. All this makes the hunter's job easier.
Be aware of the dangers of weapons. Always put the safety on the gun before changing the magazine and reloading. This way you can avoid possible undesirable consequences.
3 necessary improvements for this weapon in the video instructions:
If you set the gun to the cartridge interceptor mode, you can fire single shots.
Front sight
To improve the quality of the sight, the MP-155 is equipped with a fiber-optic front sight.
Butts
The MP-155 has the ability to adjust the butt vertically or horizontally. When purchasing a gun, you can usually notice that between the receiver and the butt there is an insert that can adjust the retraction to the right side. The insert can also turn the release to the left, which allows left-handed people to use the gun.
Sights
Compared to the previous release of the MP-155 and MP-153 shotguns, the new model has a lower sighting bar and has become arched. There are grooves on the top of the box. Where can sighting mechanisms and adapter bars be mounted? The gun was initially equipped with a collimator sight and optics.
Muzzle constriction
The muzzle constriction can be permanent or replaceable. The latter is used for shooting using steel and lead cartridges. They are manufactured in calibers 12/76 and 12/89.
IMPORTANT! During the manufacturing process of the gun, various details were thought out, especially in terms of manufacturability and minimizing the weight of the product. But the strength of the weapon was taken into account.
