MP-155K self-loading smoothbore shotgun from the Kalashnikov concern

This weapon is a modification of the Izhevsk plant MP-153 model with a gas exhaust mechanism and is produced in 3 calibers: 12/89; 12/76 and 20/76 for almost the last 8 years. At the same time, the MP-153 shotgun can be called ideal by a very large stretch due to quite a few shortcomings identified during the use of this “device”. The MP-155 has undergone many modifications, thanks to which this gun is considered an order of magnitude better than its predecessor. In particular, many internal mechanisms were improved, negotiations with an Italian company for the supply of plastic stocks and stocks were successful, and much more.

How the MP 155 shotgun was created

The management of the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant, and now the Kalashnikov Concern, must be given its due. Having realized in time the importance of updating the model range, the manufacturer promptly modernizes popular models, winning in the competition.

This happened with the MP 155. The product is a logical continuation of its predecessor - the MP 153, popular in the early and mid-2000s, which sold more than 600 thousand copies worldwide. “One hundred and fifty-third” for more than ten years on the market began to noticeably lose ground in terms of technical characteristics.

Therefore, at the end of 2010, the management of the Izhevsk plant ordered the start of work to modernize the legendary weapon. A team of engineers led by chief designer Alexander Dorf enthusiastically set to work. The task was ambitious - to develop a new self-loading gun, not inferior to modern competitors, while maintaining all the advantages of the previous model - reliability in harsh conditions, the ability to work with various cartridges, and others.

Interesting to know: the nickname of the MP 155 model, widespread among hunters, is “Murka”. However, this affectionate nickname is used not only for the 155, but also for other models of weapons under the MP brand, for example, the legendary MP-512 air rifle.

So, out of nothing to do, I painted mine out of spray cans... until it flies off...

I also have 155MR and it’s all wiped off too. Personally, I don’t care, I’ll paint it only to improve the camouflage properties

That’s right, duracotta in camo and paint the front sight with duroglow. The set is about 4000 RUR. It fits very tightly!

why paint? Well, if you decide, there is duracoat paint

A friend has a 155 - he’s always on the stand with it, he’s shot close to a thousand, there’s no such bug! And besides, it shoots extremely accurately!

I have no particular complaints about shooting, except that with factory cartridges it is inferior in sharpness to the 27th Izh, which is why I buy a magnum for a goose. But it’s not clear why there is booth 155?

He hunts with it, so he gets his hands on it. He also has IZH27 prestige (piece), so he says that the 155 is better!

And aluminum doesn’t blue and there’s no point in painting it with simple paint.

I was already thinking about the powder too...

And aluminum doesn’t blue and there’s no point in painting it with simple paint.

What did modernization affect?

Improvement work was carried out in two directions - reducing the weight of the gun and improving ergonomics and balance. The 153 weighed about 3.5 kilograms, while many competitors already weighed less than three kilograms.

To reduce weight, first of all, the list of materials used was revised. In a number of components, steel has given way to aluminum alloys and modern impact-resistant polymers. The gas pressure adjustment unit was moved from the rack to the piston, due to which the weight of the barrel was significantly reduced. The mass of the piston remains the same - this is fundamental for performance in conditions of extreme pollution.

The new trigger mechanism has fewer parts, which increases its reliability and reduces weight. The safety and retention buttons when the magazine is empty have been made larger - now they have become much more convenient to use. The trigger stroke became shorter, which affected the nature of the trigger - it became less “wobbly”.

The receiver body is made of aluminum. At the top there is a bracket for attaching adapter strips and various types of sights. The rear sight is arched, another step towards weight reduction. True, I had to tinker with attaching the strap to the barrel - it is attached using silver solder.

This is not a complete list of changes implemented in the MP 155. For example, the supply of cartridges from the magazine can be interrupted at any time by turning the flag. This is convenient if you need to fire different cartridges that need to be manually added to the cartridge ejection window.

The butt of the new item is adjustable in two planes - vertical and horizontal using inserts included in the kit. The butt retraction can be right or left. Reach can be changed by installing butt plates of different sizes.

One of the main innovations is the ability to replace the barrel with another without the use of additional tools and devices. The barrels can be equipped with a fit for replaceable chokes, or they can be cylindrical. And most importantly, now the “one hundred and fifty-five” has a modification with a 20-caliber barrel !

Interesting to know: the MP 155 has a modification for left-handed shooters. It is distinguished by the direction of ejection of the spent cartridge case (the cartridge case goes to the left), the retraction of the butt and the reverse order of operation of the safety button.

MP-155K self-loading smoothbore shotgun from the Kalashnikov concern

At the end of 2014, the Kalashnikov concern introduced to the Russian market a restyled version of its MP-155 model in the “K” modification, giving this self-loading smoothbore gun the aggressive features of modern weapons in service with the armies of the world. Self-loading shotguns are produced in Izhevsk under the Baikal brand. For the Baikal MP-155K, the main basic elements of the weapon design, the gas engine, the locking mechanism, and the automatic engine impulse adjustment remained similar to the basic model of the gun - the MP-155. A distinctive feature of the updated gun was its appearance, made in the “Military” style. The MP-155K self-loading smoothbore shotgun with a box magazine was a further development of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant series of smoothbore shotguns. This weapon has a very wide range of applications: for hunting, sports shooting, self-defense, law enforcement. The 12-gauge shotgun was specially created on the basis of the very popular MP-155 self-loading hunting rifle chambered for 12/76 and is quite reliably used with the entire range of 12-gauge cartridges on the market - from 12/70 to 12/76.

The Baikal MP-155K self-loading smoothbore shotgun was originally created to satisfy the needs and tastes of the younger, more modern generation of Russian shooters in relation to sports, hunting and possible self-defense. The layout of this shotgun makes it well suited for a wide variety of other professional applications, ranging from self-defense to law enforcement. The authors of the resource all4shooters.com believe that the Baikal MP-155K in Izhevsk was conceived as a weapon option to compete with some models of tactical-style smoothbore shotguns, shotguns with a magazine feed system from a young Turkish manufacturer, such as the Uzkon BR-99 “Barak” , Eksen MKA-1919 and many other similar models.

Currently, the Baikal MP-155K shotgun can be considered as a “tactical version” of the working system, which was used in the time-tested and reliable classic Izhevsk hunting rifles Baikal MP-153 and MP-155. At the same time, the MP-155K self-loading smoothbore shotgun is built on the basis of a gas-operated self-regulating automatic system with an annular gas piston located under the barrel of the weapon (around the magazine tube).

The new automatic gas system is self-adjusting to ensure the required level of reliability with any type of shot (in terms of purpose and concept, the gun is reminiscent of the Benelli ARGO system used on the M4 “Super 90” shotgun, also known as the M1014 JSCS). However, if the gun is not completely disassembled, manual adjustments can be made in order to optimize the effectiveness of the gun for heavier or lighter shot shells. The trigger mechanism of the Baikal MP-155K smoothbore shotgun is installed on a separate base, while the shotgun received a bolt stop that locks the bolt in the rear position if there are no cartridges in the magazine. The barrel bore is locked by a swinging cylinder, which is located in the bolt and engages with the barrel shank, which was equipped with a system of replaceable chokes or choke constrictions.

The receiver of the Baikal MP-155K self-loading smoothbore shotgun is essentially completely similar to the basic model of the previous MP-155 hunting shotgun. Its upper part was made of black anodized aluminum alloy, it is installed on the lower part, which is made of reinforced polymer, also black, which includes a fixed butt and pistol grip, as well as a completely removable trigger mechanism. The butt and pistol grip are made of modern impact-resistant polymer, which is able to provide the required level of strength and allows you to reduce the weight of the gun, which does not exceed 3.5-3.6 kg without cartridges. There are swivels on the magazine tube cover and the buttstock. The ventilated forend of the Baikal MP-155K self-loading smoothbore shotgun is also made of polymer and protects most of the barrel of the weapon, made of stainless steel. The shotgun barrel itself was initially tested for steel shot and high pressure cartridges. The weapon comes with removable/replaceable chokes. Shotgun compatible chokes: C, IC, M, IM, F and XF. In smooth-bore weapons, chokes are the muzzle constriction (or bell), which is necessary to reduce or, conversely, increase the dispersion of shot at the moment of firing a shotgun.

The MP-155K shotgun uses box magazines that hold 5 rounds. They are equally suitable for cartridges with a 70mm case length and for cartridges with a 76mm case length. The flat-shaped bolt release lever is located on the trigger guard; the shooter can easily reach it with his index finger for faster reloading of the weapon. The trigger-type trigger was made in the form of a separate, removable unit, which is mounted inside the box casing. The trigger mechanism is equipped with a non-automatic safety that blocks the trigger; there is also a slide stop, which is designed to stop the moving parts of the weapon in the rear position after all the cartridges in the magazine have been used up.

The Izhevsk smoothbore shotgun MP-155K has an open sight with a horizontally adjustable rear sight and a front sight that is vertically adjustable. In this case, the rear sight of the gun has two positions: with a diopter and an open type of sight. The scope is mounted on a carry handle and closely resembles those found on AR-15 carbines and rifles and their many derivatives. The rear sight of the shotgun is built into a removable carry handle, which itself fits onto a MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail. This allows the shooter, if desired, to change the sight, replacing it with any optical or even optical-electronic guidance system, which are available today on the Russian arms market.

Currently, the MP-155K shotgun offers a variety of applications. The weapon is available for commercial sales in Russia at a fairly competitive price. According to the recommended retail price on the manufacturer’s website, the weapon should retail for 21,176 rubles. Pre-orders are currently available for customers. At the same time, due to the sanctions in force against Russia, the Baikal MP-155K self-loading smoothbore shotgun is not available to some foreign buyers.

Device, principle of operation and purpose

The MP 155 shotgun has a classic reloading scheme with a side-mounted gas engine. The energy of the muzzle gases is spent on reloading the gun and ejecting the spent cartridge case. The gun is equipped with a muzzle gas pressure regulator. To work with light ammunition, you can increase the reload speed by tightening the valve spring using the adjusting nut. When firing powerful, heavy cartridges, it is necessary, on the contrary, to weaken the spring, thereby reducing the gas pressure.

The gun has a wide range of uses. First of all, this is amateur and commercial hunting, self-defense and shooting practice. The model gained enormous popularity as a weapon for sport shooting.

Advantages and disadvantages. Foreign analogues

In its price niche, the MP 155 shotgun has to compete with several models of domestic and foreign production. Among the domestic ones, these are products of the IZH and TOZ brands, imported analogues are products of the Turkish arms factories Armsan or Khan.

The advantages of the model include its absolute indestructibility and survivability. The gun works even when the automation and trigger mechanism are heavily soiled. The number of rounds fired can amount to tens of thousands of rounds. In this case, the backlash of the barrels and general wear will be within acceptable limits.

During operation, users identified the following shortcomings:

  • jamming of ammunition weighing 40 grams or more. The problem is solved by adjusting the muzzle gas pressure, lubrication and overhaul of the automation.
  • cracks in the trigger mechanism earring. Eliminated by replacing the part.
  • The holder button is large and can be accidentally hit during high-speed shooting.
  • low quality of parts and assembly.
  • the appearance and finish are inferior to foreign analogues.

The caretaker is right. Titanium does not play well with chrome steel. This is from the ABC of a mechanical engineer.

But I would like to read more about the protrusion of wood and plastic over the metal somewhere else, because on the Izh27, for example, the Soviet one, no protrusion was found and the wood was embedded very well.

Yes, your friend is special! I looked at your first photos again. It turned out very cool! The pattern is especially suitable for a duck in the reeds (August-September)! The other day I painted the box of my pump with DuraCoat, the paint went on well, I painted it because there were significant abrasions at the contact points between the forend and the receiver. Friction, of course, remains to this day. We'll see how the coating holds up. painted in 4 layers.
