MP-27: a classic hunting weapon

MP 27EM-1S

IZH-27 is a double-barreled hunting rifle, which has been produced by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant since 1973. Used in commercial and amateur hunting. The arrangement of the trunks is vertical, the trunks are detachable. Due to changes at the manufacturing plant since 2008, the name of the weapon is MP-27.

IZH-27 is a very large modernization of the IZH-12 gun. Since the start of production, over 1.6 million MP-27 shotguns of various modifications have been produced. In terms of the number of units, this gun is the leader among hunting rifles in Russia.

The IZH-27 (MR-27) gun has trigger interceptors (interceptors). These were intercepted triggers, which prevented the firing pin from being hit if the trigger was not pressed, for example, when the gun was dropped.

The firing pins in the gun have a very large output (up to 2.2 millimeters), which eliminates the possibility of misfire due to a deep-set primer.

I would like to say right away that I have this gun, and I will describe as I use it the problems that arise with it.

The plant currently produces the following modifications:

MR-27M (formerly IZH-27M) - without an ejector. (The author of the blog is the happy owner of this gun, and I have reviews about it:) MP-27EM (formerly IZH-27EM) - with an ejector that ejects only the spent cartridge case; MR-27M-1S (formerly IZH-27M-1S) - with a single trigger mechanism (one trigger). It is possible to change the sequence of shots, which occurs due to light pressure on the trigger forward. At the same time, a barely audible click is heard. The sound is not strong, but in ambush hunts the animal can hear it; MR-27EM-1S (formerly IZH-27EM-1s) – with an ejector and a single trigger.

Technical characteristics Caliber 12 Cartridge used 12x70 and 12x76 Barrel length, mm 725.750 Magazine capacity, pcs. 2 Weight, kg no more than 3.6 Stock material, forend Walnut/beech Injection mechanism Yes Choke tubes No, fixed choke/3 tubes

Peculiarities:

The block of barrels of the MP-27 shotgun consists of standard barrel tubes, a connecting coupling, two side and one top bar - a sighting bar with a front sight. The barrels are pressed into the coupling and connected to each other by soldering on the side strips. The barrels are made with chambers of two options - for normal charges (70 mm) and reinforced ones - the "magnum" type (76 mm).

The barrels of the MP-27 shotgun are equipped with a ventilated rib. Before firing, the barrels are locked by a sliding locking bar, which fits into the hole in the rear hook on the coupling. After a shot, when the barrels of the MP-27M gun are opened, the cartridges are pulled out by a common extractor.

The trigger mechanism of the MP-27 shotgun is equipped with internal triggers that allow you to “release” the cocking. The firing pins in the MP-27 shotgun are equipped with return springs, assembled separately from the hammers and secured in the sockets of the box. The trigger mechanism of the MP-27M shotgun has hammer interceptors and twisted cylindrical mainsprings. The trigger mechanism of the MP-27 shotgun is mounted partly in the gun box, partly on the lower base. The MP-27 shotgun is equipped with an automatic safety lock.

The stock on MP-27 shotguns has a pistol-type neck and is usually made of beech. MP-27 shotguns, manufactured for export, as well as in piece-made shotguns - from walnut. The gun has a removable trough-shaped forend. The material of the forend and butt is high-quality walnut and beech.

Stable shooting accuracy is ensured by the use of permanent choke constrictions or replaceable choke tubes for various purposes. The MP 27 m is characterized by ease of use and a high degree of safety, which are ensured by:

Manufacturing barrels from high-quality barrel steel; Chrome plating of channels and chambers, providing increased corrosion resistance; Simple and reliable design of the locking unit; Possibility of shockless trigger release; The design of the fuse that blocks the sear and has additional trigger interceptors; A system for checking the strength of barrels and the locking mechanism in accordance with standards. Permanent International Commission for Firearms Testing. The wide range of proposed modifications and versions of the MP 27 M shotgun will satisfy the needs of the most demanding consumer, allowing you to choose a shotgun with different consumer properties for various types of hunting, sport shooting, etc.

Since this is the first publication, please do not be angry if something is incorrect or not entirely clear. So, dear comrades, let's begin!

Not long ago I was lucky enough to go through all the hellish procedures required to obtain a license to purchase a hunting rifle. I didn’t see much point in writing a separate note about this procedure, due to the low interest of the majority of site regulars. Therefore, I wrote a simple, brief report in the comments to the last article on the NP on this topic (for novice hunters, it may be useful, which means they will find it if they want) The gun, naturally, was chosen long before receiving a license; the choice fell on the 20 gauge. I think most local hunters will immediately say why I took it... We're talking about the 20 gauge. But I’ll say right away that this choice was deliberate and after a meeting with comrade Andruha. Before that, I had very little experience in shooting with a 12- and 28-gauge gun, so I bought myself an intermediate one...

Actually, Andruha already posted a few photos from this outing into the field, for test firing with my new gun, in the comments to another article about going out into the field, but here there will be more photos, which means that it might be a little more interesting)) We stocked up on quite a lot targets, not simple ones, but very realistic ones

shooting was carried out from a distance of 35 meters and then at 50:

The cartridges were as follows: From SKM Industry shot No. 3, from the same manufacturer No. 00 and from the manufacturer Andruha No. 6 and, if memory serves, No. 000 (cartridges from the latter manufacturer turned out to be the best so I will buy in bulk

The shooting was quite successful, the gun showed good action. Accuracy also turned out to be quite decent. True, the main sheaf of shot on almost all targets went a little to the right and up. On the next trip we have to find out who shoots crookedly, me or the gun

but in general, every animal was killed with one shot... What at first seemed to me to be the poor quality of the cartridges from SKM (during the initial inspection, it was concluded that side pellets from a distance of 35 meters are not capable of penetrating cardboard. but, as shown a more thorough examination, it turned out that the shot ricocheted off the ground, and therefore got stuck in the target without penetrating it:

although, of course, the fact that the shot ricochets from quite soft, wet, recently plowed soil is also not encouraging:

After all the game was shot, it was collected by us and was subject to butchering and cooking over the fire

Arriving at the parking lot, Andruha started hunting:

and I decided to go look for a pheasant, or at least a jay, to test the gun on a moving target:

I’ll get ahead of myself and say right away that I couldn’t find anyone... Having returned to the base, we drank some tea, checked how many cartridges were left and began to slowly get ready for home:

By the way, this trip was the first and testing not only for the gun, but also for the car:

Of course, no one set any serious tasks for the car, but those that were dealt with easily and with a large margin, so the choice of car did not disappoint))

Packed your things, changed your shoes and went home! Next time there will be different conditions, we will continue to try in practice, learn new capabilities of the gun and the car)) I hope it turned out well for the first publication

MP-27: a classic hunting weapon

The production of hunting rifles in Izhevsk began in 1949. At the same time, large-scale production of smooth-bore hunting rifles began, which brought world fame to the Izhevsk arms factory, along with the Kalashnikov assault rifle. Today, the Kalashnikov concern continues to produce weapons for hunting.

The first signs were the single-barreled shotgun of the Kazansky system (ZK) and the double-barreled IZH-49. Starting with their development, Izhmekh designers eventually created a full range of hunting weapons.

Note that at that time, the plant’s products were marked with the designation “IZH” in combination with numbers that indicated the year of manufacture - for example, IZH-49, IZH-54, and so on. In the 1960s, the numbers in the markings of guns changed and began to indicate the project number: IZH-18, IZH-27, etc.

The wide distribution of Soviet hunting weapons on the foreign market led to the need to abandon the designation “IZH”, since it was not euphonious enough when translated into foreign languages. Izhmekh specialists were faced with the task of selecting a designation that conveys the semantic content of the product marking and has the same graphics and sound in Cyrillic and Latin.

This eventually became the abbreviation MP, which means Mechanical Plant (“mechanical plant”) - since the early 1990s, this marking has been assigned to all new weapons developments at the Izhevsk plant. Previous weapon models were produced under the old markings until 2008.

The most popular hunting rifle produced in Izhevsk was and remains the MP-27 - a double-barreled shotgun with a vertical barrel arrangement. This model was preceded by the IZH-59 “Sputnik” and IZH-12 shotguns, developed by designer Anatoly Klimov.

IZH-12 is the first “vertical” that has become widespread and recognized by hunters in the USSR. In 1973, this model was modernized: the shape of the stock and forend was changed, a ventilated sighting bar was made instead of the usual one, the safety was made automatic, adding interceptors (trigger interceptors), an ejector was installed, the shape of the box was changed at the points of its connection with the stock, on the butt installed a rubber butt pad. The new model received the index IZH-27 - today it is produced under the marking MP-27 and is a classic hunting weapon.

Four decades have passed since the release of the first IZH-27, and during this time a whole family of models has grown based on the gun: with an ejector and a single trigger mechanism (MR-27EM, MR-27M-1S, MR-27EM-1S), sports shotguns (MR-39, MR-39E, MR-27EM-1S in the “Sporting” version), combined shotguns (MR-94 and MR-94 “North”), double-barreled rifled guns (IZH-94 in the “Express” version) , MP-27M performed by “Junior” and so on. In addition, in the early 1990s, designer Vitaly Votyakov developed a modification of the IZH-27 shotgun chambered for the magnum cartridge of 12/76 caliber.

The MP-27EM modification gun is indispensable for types of hunting that require quick reloading, since it is equipped with an ejector that ejects only the spent cartridge case. Moreover, if necessary, the owner of the gun can turn off the ejector in the field without disassembling it and without using a special tool.

Along with serial products, Izhevsk craftsmen make guns according to individual orders of consumers, creating beautiful examples of highly artistic weapons: unique piece guns with artistic engraving of the “classic”, “prestige”, “deluxe”, “exclusive”, “collectible” classes.

The assembly of each gun is carried out by one assembly mechanic, manually adjusting and sealing parts and mechanisms.

On guns, at the request of the customer, it is possible to carry out any decoration or inscription using hand engraving, precious metals, and artistic painting.

In addition, the factory's gunsmiths have revived the ancient art of weapon miniatures on a scale of 1:3. Each miniature gun is unique; the miniatures have all the mechanisms that, in design and function, are almost identical to the full-size originals.

The forend and butt are made of valuable types of wood - walnut, beech, thuja and other materials. In this case, the butt can be decorated with an ornament: stylized deciduous, in the form of scales and cut in the form of a mesh, made using the wood carving technique. Engraving options are varied: from the simplest drawings made by laser engraving to highly artistic scenes made by hand using various techniques using precious metals, which allows the customer to choose options at different price levels. Thus, for lovers of classic Russian hunting and adherents of the “folk vertical” there is a choice: from a traditional model to a highly artistic or souvenir option.
