Baikal MP-651 KS - sports gas pistol, convertible into a carbine

The MP-60 spring-piston rifle is very popular even today. True, not as a hunting weapon, but as a way to gain shooting skills. A copy of the MP-60 air rifle is available in each shooting range. But abroad, the domestic rifle has a special appeal due to its unique design, compactness and affordability.

Review of the Baikal MP-651 KS air pistol

Multi-charge pistol of gas cylinder design, with a revolving type of loading and a steel rifled barrel.

Advantages and disadvantages

The pistol is a sport pistol, its long rifled barrel is a guarantee of an accurate shot if you have the skills. Despite its sporting nature, it is somewhat similar to a real firearm. The closest thing to the Colt 1911 is the protruding tail at the top edge of the handle and the angular receiver.

It's a little confusing that the entire body is plastic. But this does not affect the reliability of the design. The pistol is multi-shot, revolver type. And what’s especially good is that it can shoot not only lead rifle bullets, but also steel balls. This predetermined its popularity among hardball fans.

You can shoot either by self-cocking or by manually activating the trigger. The safety is located on the trigger, the travel of which can be adjusted.

The presence of an additional magazine is both a plus and a minus of the MP-651. The hopper pusher is open, so its spring easily becomes clogged and jammed. But you can clearly see how many balls are left in stock.

The sighting devices are not equipped with fiber-optic threads, which is quite natural for a sports projectile. The front sight is not adjustable, and the position of the rear sight can only be changed horizontally by moving the plate with the slot along the slots.

Model 651-07 is equipped with a removable stock and forend. In principle, any “651” can be turned into a carbine if you come across these parts from the “07”. To do this, you just need to remove the plastic handle cover.

An obvious design flaw is the screw that secures the lining on the handle. Its head is hemispherical, with sparse notches. It can be difficult to unscrew it, especially outdoors, and even in cold weather. Without this, you won’t be able to install the gas canister.

Where can I use it?

The pistol is universal. It can be used not only at sports competitions, but also for playing hardball or recreational shooting. The force on the trigger, especially when shooting self-cocking, may be excessive for children's hands.

Review of MP-60

The steel barrel of the air rifle has a rifled variation. A certain design feature makes the rifle compact. The location of the working cylinder in the butt significantly reduces the overall length of the product.

Cocking is carried out by a side lever on the right side of the MP-60 in a back-and-forth motion. A very good feature is that you can adjust the operation of the trigger: force and stroke.

The cocking lever is blocked by a special mechanism, so an accidental shot is excluded

Sighting devices are represented by a fixed closed front sight and an aiming bar, which can be adjusted with draw and micrometer screws. The ramming bolt of an air rifle is longitudinally sliding. If desired, an optical or collimator device can be installed on the MP-60.

Advantages and disadvantages

The pros and cons of the model can be judged both by the general description and by reviews of real owners who have tested the weapon in action. First, we present arguments emphasizing the advantages of the MP-53M. The most attractive factor is the price. You can buy a pistol not only in a gun store, but also in hunting and fishing stores. The cost of the barrel is 2-3 thousand rubles. Let us remember that there are models of air pistols at a higher price, and even more so we should not talk about the price of traumatic weapons.

The peculiarities of Russian production, especially in the field of weapons, are that all manufactured devices are not only reliable, but also suitable for further modernization. The factory parameters of the pistol are unlikely to suit a true weapon connoisseur, so almost every owner begins modifications. The most popular manipulations involve strengthening the spring.

Although the appearance of the pistol does not at all resemble the appearance of a real military weapon, and the excessively long barrel interferes with the convenient transportation of the pistol, the model is recognizable, not only among professionals, but also among amateurs, this is noted as a positive factor.

It is impossible not to say about the reliability of the device. Its resource is practically unlimited, and if you consider that you can always find spare parts for repairs, then the weapon is considered “eternal.”

Tuning a pistol is work to improve its technical performance. Not every model can be tuned, especially at home, where there is no special tool. In this regard, the MP-53M provides its owners with a huge field for activity.

If we approach it objectively, then each device has its own disadvantages. Our model is not deprived of them either. The fact that the pistol must be reloaded after each shot greatly reduces the rate of fire. The pistol doesn't even have a magazine to store cartridges. It is necessary not only to cock the spring, but also to insert the bullet.

Air guns are not suitable for self-defense. Our model not only does not have enough power for this, but is also quite bulky. The pistol is not suitable for constant carry, and while the power can still be worked on, there is no way to get rid of the long barrel.

Design

Gas-cylinder pistol with a steel rifled barrel of 4.5 mm caliber. The case is plastic, the mechanisms are steel.

There can be two types:

    with the letter KS, having a siphon cartridge weighing 8 grams;
  • with the letter K, whose siphon cartridge weighs 12 grams.

The handle of the KS models is shorter.

The pistol is multi-shot, revolver-type loading. Lead bullets or steel balls can be used as ammunition. Therefore, the design provides two types of replaceable drums. The one designed for steel balls has magnets, and its charging chambers are stepped. The drums hold 8 pieces of one or another type of ammunition. To store the balls, a drive is used above the receiver, which can accommodate another 23 steel spheres with a diameter of 4.44 mm.

Double action trigger. The hammer can be cocked by hand or simply pulled on the trigger. The fuse is mechanical, its button is located on the trigger hook and blocks it (the “Fire” position - shift to the left).

Sights without fiber-optic threads. The position of the rear sight can only be changed by moving it horizontally (along the slots by loosening the screw on the rear plane of the bar).

The Model 651-07 comes with a removable stock and handguard. The buttstock is installed in place of the removed handle pads, the forend is simply put on top of the receiver and snaps into place under the trigger guard. There is a periscope on the butt. Its only purpose is to translate the direction of the shooter’s gaze to the level of the rear sight - front sight line. The position of the periscope mirror can be adjusted.

Operating principle

The pistol fires steel balls with a diameter of no more than 4.44 mm and lead bullets of 4.5 mm caliber. For sports competitions, match ones are used, in other cases, the answer to the question of which bullets are suitable for the MP-651 KS will be any that weigh no more than 0.75 grams (no longer prohibited, but the bullet is visible in flight).

In order to change the drum, you need to move forward the lever located on both sides of the receiver. Please note that the ball drum has chamfers to prevent them from falling out.

The bullets are loaded into a drum removed from the charging chamber. If you want to use balls, then the drum for them must be in place, and loading occurs by filling the hopper in the receiver. The hole for the balls is located on the aiming line.

Before placing steel spheres into the bunker, you need to move the pusher flag to the front sight. You can immediately fill the drum with balls by rotating it clockwise (without pressing the trigger).

The canister is installed in the handle. To do this, unscrew the screw with a hemispherical head in its lower part (rear), and remove the plastic covers. The same operation must be done when installing the butt.

The Model 651-07's replacement handguard has a false barrel that resembles a suppressor. But this is just an imitation, nothing more. The forend is put on the receiver and snaps into place, hooking onto the front branch of the trigger guard.

The installed butt covers the rear sight, so a periscope is mounted on it, the position of the mirror of which can be adjusted.

USM Baikal MP-651 double action - you can shoot by self-cocking or by initiating the mechanism manually by pressing the trigger (with the stock installed, it is not so easy to reach it). The safety is located directly on the trigger. By moving the button to the right, you will jam it tightly.

Disassembly

Disassembly is performed for infrequent maintenance, repairs or upgrades. The best tool for this is the screwdriver included in the package.

For disassembly you need:

  1. Unscrew the screw at the bottom of the handle, remove the plastic covers, and remove the can.
  2. Unscrew the screw at the front branch of the trigger guard (located along the axis of the pistol), remove the receiver casing along with the drive.
  3. Remove the drive from the receiver, remove its spring and pusher.
  4. Remove the under-barrel wedge, remove the barrel along with the magazine axle spring and the axle itself. Don't lose the barrel gasket!
  5. Unscrew the screw above the trigger guard (with a cross-head slot) and remove the trigger cover.
  6. Disassemble the trigger. Start the process with the sear.
  7. Unscrew the screw on the top plane of the rear sight, remove it and gain access to the gas fittings.

Upgrades MR-651KS, part 1

MR-651KS

The first review article about the MP-651KC, to my surprise, aroused quite a lot of interest (200-300 visits per month), so I decided to continue and describe the simplest upgrades.

Detailed photos included.

Making a new clamping screw

Justification for the need: the standard length included in the kit is designed for 8g cylinders; therefore, when refilling 12g, it sticks out very much, which makes carrying in a holster extremely inconvenient. The easiest option is to buy it in a store (yes, they are sold) and not try to reinvent the wheel, but there is one caveat: the original screw for tightening on the end of the screw is not very convenient, it constantly clings to something and generally dangles like snot, so we'll go another way.

The first thing we need is the actual bolt with the required thread. I looked for one like this in the bins of my homeland for about half an hour, if you don’t have bins, then go to the hardware store, everything is there. Next, we take a ruler and measure the required length, add three or four millimeters to each fireman and saw off the excess.

The next step is to drill a semicircular recess in the end so that the can sits in it and does not jump out. For this you need: a vice, a core, a hammer, a drill, a small metal drill (1-1.5mm), a large metal drill (10-12mm). Sequence of actions: clamp the bolt as hard as you can in a vice (on the thread!!!), punch the recess, drill with a thin drill to a depth of a couple of millimeters, drill out with a thick drill. File the edges. If the depression turns out to be oblique, crooked, or simply ugly, repeat the operation.

The third step is to decide how and how it is more convenient for us to tighten the bolt and, accordingly, what we will do with its head. The easiest option is to take an old bicycle out of the shed and find the required key in its repair kit. You can do something more complicated and drill a hole and screw it in, for example, with the same drill. I chose a more exotic one - I ground a hat to resemble a plumbing lamb that I had lying around since time immemorial. Be that as it may, any option will be more convenient than the standard one in terms of tightening and more inconvenient due to the need to have an additional part in your pocket.

Changing drums from plastic to metal

The point of this upgrade is to reduce gas leaks and, as a result, increase bullet speed. The fact is that there is quite a strong draft through the original plastic drums, which reduces the energy transferred to the process, but at least ventilates the atmosphere :)

The drums are bought in the store, but... do not forget that they are made by a domestic manufacturer and require filing! In my case, the thickness was too great, one did not climb at all, the second climbed, but it was extremely difficult to turn it, and besides, the surface facing the barrel looked like a vinyl record. This shortcoming can be corrected quite simply: you need some sandpaper (purchased at the hardware store along with the bolts) and a little diligence.

When polishing the surface, be extremely careful; the drum should fit tightly, without any gaps, i.e. distortions are unacceptable. On the other hand, it should rotate quite easily, since its shift is carried out by the trigger, and if it barely rotates, then we will shoot powerfully, but miss :) For a fine adjustment, you can use a marker - paint, scroll, see where it has worn off, carefully sharpen it. Mandatory control - looking at the light in search of parasitic cracks.

We sharpen the aiming bar to perfection

Meaning: the standard one clings to everything, as it has angles greater than that of an ax blade and sometimes digs into the skin. The correction method is a file. There is nothing more to say here, cut Shura, cut.

In the next issues I will deal with sealing and deeper tuning, as well as hanging whistles and tricks like a flashlight and a laser sight.

Tuning

To modify the gun in order to strengthen it, it is necessary to increase the diameter of the outlet from the valve and the bypass connecting the fittings to the barrel. Theoretically, it is possible to upgrade, making their diameter equal to 4 mm, but in this case the pistol mechanism may simply freeze during a shot. So stop at 3.5 or 3.9 millimeters.

The gas fittings of the gun do not have an expansion chamber. The can is placed on a needle connected directly to the valve chamber. This reduces the amount of CO2 that is involved in the firing process.

You need to unscrew the adapter with the needle from the valve bushing and place between them an additional container (a thick-walled tube 4 mm long), which has an external thread on one end (for screwing into the valve bushing), and an internal thread on the other, for the adapter. In this case, you will have to replace the valve spring with a longer one, and also sharpen the seat of the cylinder on the lower plane of the handle.

The MP-651K has another leak point - between the rear wall of the drum and the bypass channel.
Yes, I know. But. Practice has shown that these leaks can be fixed with a parting. As I already said somewhere, no sealing will give an increase from 130 to 160. Only an increase in the evaporation chamber.

Perhaps, if you plan to use a sp., it is better to throw away the sp. and adjust the barrel itself so that the gap between the breech end of the barrel and the front surface of the drum is no more than 0.1 mm. I think gas leaks will decrease.

I think the same, I even have hard barrel gaskets included. But I haven't installed it yet. I wanted to cast it with tin - fill the funnel and imitate the barrel gasket, but nothing came of it - the high surface tension of the alloy - it forms a drop and refuses to flow. Out of boredom, I sealed the funnel with automotive sealant for dismountable mechanisms. In the morning I was impressed - it turned out to be a tight gasket. I shot the cylinder and it’s standing still. So far I'm impressed. I'm thinking of casting a complete adapter from sealant - funnel-barrel gasket.

Thought. Isn't it better to drill out the drum chambers so that the sp. sat in it more freely and everything was the same?

The bullets will come out easier, but they will enter the rifling harder, and at speed. Those. On the contrary, deformation at speed will increase. I perceive the drum chamber as a preliminary calibrator. And some bullets have a particularly wide skirt and drilling for it is boring. In general, I was thinking about shifting the camera holes to eliminate the misalignment.

1. It seems you have two MP-651KS.

Yes

Is there vertical misalignment between the clip chambers and the bore in both?

You know, it's extremely difficult to say. You can't see anything under the gasket. Without a gasket, the barrel moves so that you can put it in any position. I looked at it through a gasket with a torn off narrowing (it tore itself, and I cut it off). The edges of the cameras are not visible. But the bullet, set with the skirt forward, looks slightly shifted upward. On one pistol it’s absolutely disgusting - the bypass hole is in the center of the barrel, chamber, and when there is a barrel gasket, it is sharply out of alignment. It looks like the barrel gasket is misaligned - this is absolutely disgusting. On the other hand, in this regard, everything is ok. But there still seems to be a vertical misalignment. I evaluate it this way: if, when turning, the sickle turns out to be not symmetrical - one beam is longer than the other - that means the edge of the long beam is closer to the center - misalignment. I could be wrong. This may not be the case when the cameras move in a circle.

2. Approximately what is the amount of vertical misalignment?

Looks like less than a millimeter. How can you see through the trunk?

3. Is the amount of horizontal misalignment the same for different chambers?

Again, it's hard to say. If the rotation mechanism is adjusted so that the shot starts when the camera stops - i.e. a stopper keeps it from turning further, and a pusher keeps it from turning back - it looks like yes. All cameras stand the same way. Like locking can be achieved by bending the pusher towards the drum axis - then it pushes better and forms a reliable pusher-stopper wedge. Moreover, the pusher - also known as a spring - first pushes, and then, pressing, holds it. There is even a protrusion on one body cover that should support the pusher at the right time.

4. Are you planning on converting a pistol into a rifle?

Quite the opposite - I’m thinking about remaking the 61st hedgehog. I want a clip and a rammer. I got fucked with the drum, to put it mildly. But the lack of a machine park is very hampering us.

I'll say a few more words about the upgrade. Most likely in a separate topic in pneumatic. weapons. Or maybe I’ll duplicate it here. “The purpose of upgrading MP651” The result gave rise to strong thoughts..
