Remington 700 rifle with American quality

The Remington 700 CDL SF carbine is one of the modifications of the famous 700th Remington line. This version can be considered the successor to the 700 Classic modification, which was produced for 25 years and truly became a real hunting classic.

It is noteworthy that it was originally completely called the CDL SF Limited Edition. The first two abbreviations stand for Classic Deluxe Stainless Fluted (classic luxury model with a fluted stainless steel barrel), and the phrase Limited Edition hardly needs translation. Indeed, since 2006, the rifle has been produced in limited editions, and every year Remington presented a version in a new caliber.

But the model turned out to be so popular that they decided to abandon the policy of limited editions. And now it is produced simply under the CDL SF label. At the same time, the serial versions are no different from the earlier ones, except for the absence of the “Limited” engraving. But let's turn to the model itself.

general information

Based on the classic 700 version, many modifications have been developed for various ammunition. The standard version is powered by 7.62x51 NATO cartridges. There are several magazine options: from 3 to 5 ammunition.

Optical sights can be installed. Universal mounting allows you to use optics from many manufacturers. This model is based on the Mauser brothers rifle. Serial production began in 1962. The total number of versions is more than 700. They are used everywhere: in the civilian environment, sports, in law enforcement agencies, etc.

A distinctive feature is the high build quality of each specimen. Excellent accuracy and accuracy determine the high efficiency of the weapon. Repairs do not require much effort, since many small manufacturers produce parts for the Remington 700. Gun stores offer models in various customizations; the buyer can order individual design at a gun store.

The cylindrical bolt box is made of steel. The barrel bore is locked by two lugs, which are located in front of the bolt. The magazines can be detachable or non-detachable; charges are supplied from them. Mounts for optics are attached to the receiver in special mounting locations.

Model 700 rifles have been produced in the USA by Remington since 1962. The Model 700 is perhaps the most widely used bolt-action sniper and hunting rifle in the United States. The design of the Model 700 goes back to the British P14 and the American 1917 Enfield. Modern versions of the Model 700 feature a stainless steel barrel and polymer stocks, and are tuned to provide one arc minute accuracy when using match grade ammunition. The Model 700 design was and remains the basis for many specialized sniper rifles. The US Marine Corps was among the first to select the Model 700 as the basis for a precision sniper weapon. The M40 rifles used in Vietnam until the late 1970s were based on the Model 700BDL design. Modern USMC M40A1 rifles are still created based on the same model. Later, when the US Army decided to switch from self-loading semi-automatic sniper rifles to manual bolt-action rifles, the Model 700 was again chosen as the basis for the M24 rifle.

Technically, the Model 700 is a bolt-action repeating rifle. The bolt box is steel, cylindrical in shape. Locking is carried out by two lugs located in the front part of the bolt, using grooves in the steel box. The cartridges are supplied from internal (non-removable) or removable box magazines. The bolt box has seats for installing mounts for optical sights. Quite popular in the USA is the installation of the so-called. Remington model 700 actions (barrel with bolt box, bolt group and firing mechanism) in stocks from other companies - HS Precision, McMillan, Choate and others. In general, Remington model 700 rifles are available in several dozen calibers from .177 Rem (4.5 mm) to .338 Rem Ultra magnum (8.6 mm) and even larger ones.

Remington 700 VTR

VTR is considered the most unusual and successful modification of the standard 700 model of the American company. The abbreviation, consisting of three letters, is deciphered as follows:

  • V - Varmint. A type of hunting that involves neutralizing small animals that belong to the class of pests. The main requirement for a weapon for such a hunt is a range of up to 1000 meters;
  • T - Tactical. Indicates the use of a short barrel, which reduces the range of destruction to 300 meters, which is far inferior to the required indicator for hunting of this species;
  • R - Rifles. Indicates that the weapon belongs to the rifle class.

The main feature is the trunk, which has thick walls. It retains the triangular cross-section from the basic 1962 version. At the end of the barrel there is a compensator that reduces the impact of recoil and increases shooting efficiency.

VTR design

The high working resource reserve is due to the simple device. The coating of the bolt and the inner surface of the receiver corresponds to the properties of Teflon. This increases the strength of the reloading mechanism and does not require constant lubrication. It can work stably for a short time even in the presence of heavy contamination.

As mentioned above, the barrel has thick walls. This provides high ballistic characteristics. There is no vibration when shooting; thanks to the coating, rapid cooling occurs during intense shooting. The receiver is made of steel by milling from a single piece. The mount to the barrel is one-piece; it is coated with the same protective solution as the bolt.

A muzzle brake-compensator reduces recoil and retraction of the gun during firing. Its main disadvantage is its inconsistency. There is no way to replace it with another one or remove it completely if it interferes with aiming or causes other discomfort.

The magazine is presented in the form of a lid with a leaf spring. The carbine can only be equipped with cartridges through the ejector window located in the receiver. This causes inconvenience when using a low bar, and also does not allow for quick reloading in the event of the end of ammunition.

The fuse is responsible for safety. There are two modes: “Stop” and “Fire”. The first activates the safety (the trigger mechanism is blocked), the second allows firing.

The trigger travel is short. A typical solution for sporting shotguns, but many hunters consider this a disadvantage. The trigger pull can be adjusted. To do this, adjust the screw slot, which is located at the base of the trigger.

At the end of the bolt lever there is a “tablet” or triangular knob, which is why the lever protrudes beyond the boundaries of the rifle body. This is acceptable for sport shooting, but if the Remington 700 VTR is used for hunting in the forest, this is considered a disadvantage: the lever clings to branches and other obstacles.

The controls are located on a limited area of the trigger guard. A narrow space does not have negative consequences during moderate shooting, but if we are talking about an intense pace with aiming offhand, there is a high probability of missing the intended target, especially if there is no experience in using the gun.

The stock is made of plastic, which can withstand moderate mechanical impacts and falls from a hunter's height. There are elastron inserts on the fore-end and pistol grip, thanks to which the carbine does not slip out of your hands during shooting.

The handguard is equipped with several holes, the main purpose of which is to effectively cool the barrel during intense shooting. The shape of the forend is trapezoidal, the base is wide and flat. This device allows you to fix the weapon at any rest. There are swivels for installing bipods. The shape of the stock is inconvenient for offhand shooting.

The design does not provide for a mechanical sight. Instead, there are threaded holes that allow you to mount any type of sight, including optics.

Remington 700 CDL SF New classic

This version is based on the same 700 Remington, but slightly modified for greater reliability and reduced weight. By its design, it is a traditional bolt-action carbine with a longitudinally sliding rotary bolt. The receiver is made from a single piece of steel for greater strength and uniformity of the metal. The fluted stainless steel barrel looks unusual - thanks to this solution it was possible to significantly reduce the weight of the rifle.

Externally, the model looks like a classic bolt-action carbine: traditional shapes, a butt with a raised cheekpiece, a black rubber butt pad, large checkered notches on the pistol grip and fore-end. The stock is made of natural walnut wood that has undergone special processing.

The rifle is equipped with an X-Mark Pro release system with an externally adjustable trigger. The trigger mechanism is made of stainless steel and is reliably protected from corrosion. With a trigger force of 1.6 kilograms, the adjustment range is +- 1 kilogram. The descent itself is clear, without backlash or dips.

The design uses a 3 Rings of Steel system (three steel rings), which provides additional protection against breakthrough of powder gases and deformation of the body. Thanks to the initially round shape of the receiver, the barrel fits directly into it and is securely fixed. In the upper part of the receiver there is preparation for attaching an optical sight.

At first, the CDL SF was produced every year in a limited edition in a certain caliber. Therefore, today the rifle has a wide selection of versions in different calibers, such as: 6.5 Creedmoor, 270 Win, 25-06 Remington, 30-06 Sprg, 257 Wby Mag, 270 WSM, 300 WSM, 7mm-08 Remington, 7mm Remington Mag. Depending on the caliber, the overall length of the barrel and the weight of the weapon also differ. Thus, the total length of the rifle varies from 110 to 118 cm, barrel length - from 61 to 66 cm, weight - from 3.3 to 3.4 kg. Magazine capacity - 3 or 4 rounds.

A wide selection of calibers makes the carbine a universal hunting weapon. With such a rifle you can go after both small game and large animals. Thanks to its lightness, it is perfect for walking hunting, including in the mountains, where long distances often have to be covered, while the weapon requires the highest accuracy and range.

On the one hand, the Remington 700 CDL SF is a very simple carbine with little to truly surprise you. On the other hand, all the classic elements are brought to perfection here, so the precision and reliability are truly impressive.

Remington 700 SPS

Remington 700 223 REM or SPS is a civilian version of the carbine. This is the simplest modification of the 700 model. The gun does not require careful maintenance - it is enough to carry out standard cleaning of parts after each shooting. The stability and efficiency of SPS are at a high level, ahead of its main competitors.

It is used for hunting small and medium-sized animals. The design can withstand extreme conditions - from -51 to +51 degrees Celsius, high humidity levels. The characteristics of the rifle comply with the legislation of any country, allowing the owner to use it as a means of self-defense when there is a threat to health or life.

The Remington 700 SPS is manufactured using synthetic materials. Experts consider this to be the main drawback, since manufacturers have moved away from the basic, all-metal concept laid down more than 50 years ago. The structural base has been preserved, including the triangular section of the trunk. It is responsible for rapid cooling during intense shooting.

The owner has the opportunity to adjust the butt to his own dimensions: the length of the arms is taken into account, the height of the cheek is adjusted. This makes the weapon as convenient as possible for every hunter. The design of the butt is tactical in nature. The trigger mechanism is adjustable. Quick adjustment is implemented by the X Mark Pro system. Sling swivels for attaching the belt are installed on the fore-end and stock.

Chrome-molybdenum alloy is used in the barrel and action of the Remington 700 SPS. To reduce recoil during shooting, a rubber shock absorber is installed on the butt. The stock is made of synthetic material, painted black and coated with a protective layer of OD Green. The magazine is built-in and has a hinged lid. The main feature of the barrel is carbon steel. It is covered with matte black paint, which eliminates glare during aiming.

Reviews

Russian consumers highly appreciate the stability of all mechanisms and their durability. The developers of the Remington 700 SPS have eliminated all sorts of shortcomings that haunted the owners of the standard version. The design is made in such a way that when the gun is dropped, the likelihood of dirt getting inside is zero. The treatment of the wooden stock can withstand increased levels of moisture.

The only drawback of the model is the technical documentation, the translation of which is carried out at a low level. Some technical aspects of assembly and disassembly are difficult to understand; you have to refer to the attached illustrations. Confirmation of the quality of the modification is its widespread use and high sales levels.

Remington 700 LTR

The Remington 700 LTR rifle is a rare, custom-built rifle. Belongs to the class of tactical sniper rifles. The gun is based on the receiver and trigger mechanism of the classic 700 version. The magazine holds four rounds, is detachable, and ammunition is fed step by step.

To ensure high quality and reserve working life, all spare parts of the receiver and trigger have a good precision fit. The receiver has an absolutely even shape, and the bolt lug is thoroughly polished. The surface of the bolt is smooth, ground to the guide rib of the receiver. The bolt lever is devoid of protruding elements, which has increased the ease of use of the rifle.

LTR barrel length is 508 millimeters. For a sniper rifle, its geometry was developed from scratch. The Remington 700 uses 308 caliber in LTR style rifles. The barrel is equipped with four right-hand rifling. The metal parts of the weapon are coated with black Teflon.

The weight was reduced due to the fiberglass stock. It is also used in the M40 military sniper rifles used by the US Army. Its weight is 907 grams. Modern computer equipment is used to create recesses in the stock for the receiver and trigger. The stock can withstand harsh climatic conditions and high pressure. The manufacturer can create a unique design of the case at the request of the customer. The butt plate on the buttstock is complemented by a rounded notch, thanks to which the gun does not slip on the shooter’s shoulder.

The barrel is laid freely in the stock. The trigger is secured with fiberglass pins. The hinged comb is adjusted for left-handed and right-handed people. Thanks to it, the height of the butt is adjustable for comfortable work with an optical sight for a shooter of any size.
