In the seventies of the last century, farmers of the Kazakh Republic faced a rather unexpected misfortune. Vast agricultural lands were trampled by migrating herds of saiga antelope, causing enormous losses. Hunters tried their best to cope with this problem, but the technical characteristics of smooth-bore weapons of that time left much to be desired. This is how the Saiga-223 REM gun was developed, reviews of hunters about which can be found in our article.
Weapon Description
It's no secret that this weapon is one of the best examples of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, which is intended for commercial and amateur hunting in a wide variety of conditions. Judging by the reviews of hunters, the Saiga-223 REM carbine can be classified as a universal type of weapon, which is perfect for use both for hunting game birds or fur-bearing animals, and for shooting large predators. The appearance of the self-loading carbine is a bit reminiscent of a Kalashnikov assault rifle, but it also has significant differences from the prototype.
Regardless of the modification, any Saiga uses a self-loading mechanism as the basis of its operation, which greatly simplifies the process of its operation. Reloading of a spent cartridge occurs with the help of a return spring, which ejects the spent cartridge case and places a new cartridge in the chamber. Hunting with such smooth-bore weapons is dynamic, although the Saiga does not produce such accuracy in long-range combat as sniper rifles.
Pump-action carbine "Saiga" KSZ-223
In practical rifle shooting there are five classes, of which two - "open" and "standard" - in which semi-automatic rifles are mainly used. The three remaining classes are classes that use manually loaded weapons. Let's look at them in a little more detail. An Open Handload Class is a class that allows the use of handload rifles only. The use of a bipod is permitted. There are no restrictions on the dimensions of the DTK, the capacity of the magazines, and electronic and optical sighting devices are also allowed. The standard handload class is limited to the use of iron sights only. There are restrictions on the dimensions of the DTK. The use of optics and bipods is prohibited. Magazine capacity is limited to 5 rounds.
Schematic representation of the KSZ-223 carbine
The "Standard 10" class with manual reloading differs from the standard class with manual reloading only in the capacity of the magazines used, which is limited to 10 rounds. The rules of the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) do not regulate the principle of manual reloading and do not limit manufacturers to using only a sliding bolt in the design of a weapon. Historically, the handloading classes in practical shooting were born from bolt-action repeating rifles in various designs. These rifles have more than a century of successful use in various armies around the world. The design of rifles developed and improved. Options appeared with a smaller bolt rotation angle, with handles of the most ergonomic shape, designed for high-speed reloading. Then samples appeared that made it possible to carry out the reloading process without transverse rotation of the bolt handle, for example Blaser R93/R8. There are also models based on a similar principle, and even with the same name, but having different designs - “Maral” (Izhmash) and Maral (Browning). Some athletes use carbines in which reloading is carried out by moving a movable forend (the so-called “pump-action” reloading). The most famous models with “pump-action” reloading are the Remington model 7600 and 7615. There are also factory pump-action carbines that were designed on the basis of existing semi-automatic rifles, for example the PAR pump-action carbine of the American company TROY, created on the basis of the semi-automatic AR-15 rifle, or Romanian pump-action clones Kalashnikov assault rifle - PAR-1, PAR-2 and PAR-3. In addition to the previously described models of rifled pump-action carbines, special kits of parts are also available in the world for independent upgrading of self-loading AR15 and AK rifles into carbines with “pump-action” reloading. In mid-2016, the Russian Practical Shooting Federation contacted the Kalashnikov concern with a request to develop and produce a batch of experimental hand-loading rifles for the Russian national team for the upcoming first World Championship in Practical Carbine Shooting in 2022. The carbines had to be suitable for use in all three classes with manual reloading. The Kalashnikov concern team was actively involved in the development of a pump-action version of the famous AK assault rifle, taking into account modern ergonomic requirements and previously developed technical solutions.
Saiga carbine KSZ-223 with reloading by a movable fore-end
Professional athletes and industrial designers were involved in developing the appearance of the carbine and its individual elements. As a result of the hard work of designers and pilot production employees, a sports carbine with manual reloading was born, which absorbed all the best that was invented to modernize the AK system, and received the ability to “pump-action” reloading. The carbine was named KSZ-223. At the beginning of spring 2022, the entire number of carbines ordered by FPSR arrived at the warehouse and began to be shipped to athletes.
The KSZ-223 carbine is a sporting weapon and is designed for practical shooters
The Kalashnikov Concern assumed all costs for the design and production of carbines, providing KSZ-223 carbines to athletes. The Saiga KSZ-223 pump-action carbine with manual reloading is based on the Saiga MK-223 self-loading carbine; its main difference is the absence of a gas outlet unit on the barrel and a gas piston, and reloading is carried out due to a longitudinally sliding forend, rigidly connected to the bolt frame. Additionally, there are two handles on the bolt frame for reloading when shooting prone, when working with the forend is inconvenient. The weapon has a hinged receiver cover, on which there is a picatini-type rail, as well as a telescopic butt adjustable in length. The cartridges are fed from standard box magazines from Saiga 223 carbines. Weapon length 920–1025 mm, barrel length 415 mm, weight 4.2 kg, magazine capacity 10 or 30 rounds.
The key feature of the KSZ-223 is the presence of a movable forend
The design of the carbine has the following features: - a movable forend for manual reloading of the carbine; — cocking handles, duplicated on the right and left sides, for ease of reloading in prone positions or when shooting from awkward positions; — a “picatini” rail on the receiver cover, which, together with a lock located in the rear part of the receiver and ensuring uniform and rigid fixation of the cover, allows the installation of optical and collimator sights; — a magazine receiver shaft, which, together with an enlarged magazine latch lever, greatly simplifies and speeds up the process of changing the magazine; — a safety with an additional platform for the index finger allows you to turn the safety on or off without changing the grip of the hand holding the pistol grip; — ergonomic pistol grip with accessory case and oiler; — a telescopic butt with a rise in the butt line ensured “linearity” of recoil, minimizing deviations from the line of sight when shooting.
The KSZ-223 carbine is equipped with a dioptric rear sight
Let me remind you that, as stated at the beginning of the article, the Saiga KSZ-223 pump-action carbine with manual reloading was developed by the Kalashnikov concern at the request of the Russian practical shooting team specifically for the IPSC World Carbine Championship. The first experience of sporting use of the new product came in the second stage of the Russian Cup in practical shooting from a carbine, held at the end of April 2022 in the shooting complex of the Patriot Park near Moscow. For the first time, performing with the KSZ-223 carbine in the “open” class with manual reloading, the Kalashnikov team athlete, Ekaterinburg resident Roman Khalitov, won a gold medal, beating his titled rivals with classic bolt-action rifles, as well as with “pump-action” versions of AR rifles, in these difficult competitions -15!
Design Features
If you believe the reviews of hunters, Saiga-223 is distinguished by excellent technical characteristics, which are ensured thanks to high-quality assembly and design features. For example, the Saiga barrel has a chrome coating, which allows you to clean the carbine without any problems. And magazines for smooth-bore self-loading weapons are made only from special impact-resistant plastic, so they are not afraid of falls even from great heights. The forend and butt are most often also made of plastic, but there are also options made of wood:
- birch;
- nut;
- beech
Also, “Saiga-223” has a classic open-type sighting device, but this does not mean that you cannot install a collimator or optical sight on the weapon. For this purpose, the self-loading carbine is specially equipped with a dovetail sighting bar, which allows the installation of most types of sighting devices.
System
Saiga hunting carbines were originally based on the design of the AK-74 assault rifle, but over time they underwent a number of changes and improvements aimed at improving performance. The carbine differs from military weapons primarily in that it is impossible to fire in bursts, for which some details have been changed, namely: there is no self-timer mechanism, there is no self-timer tide on the bolt frame, there is no retarder in the trigger mechanism, the configuration of the trigger, sear and translator-fuse, the trajectory of feeding cartridges from the magazine to the chamber has been changed.
In addition, the attachment point for the magazine to the weapon has been changed so that it is impossible to insert a magazine from a combat weapon into the carbine, which, however, is solved by various tuning workshops depending on the legislation of the country of use, both by remaking magazines from military weapons, and with their own developments. The butt and fore-end of the carbine (depending on the version) can be made like classic hunting rifles, or copy the corresponding components of a Kalashnikov assault rifle, and be made of plastic or wood. It is also possible to install a frame stock similar to the AKs-74 assault rifle or SVD-S rifle. If the carbine version does not have a pistol grip fire control, and the trigger and its safety guard are shifted closer to the neck of the hunting-type butt, a special trigger rod is introduced into the trigger mechanism. The capacity of the magazines depends on the legislation of the country and the types of cartridges.
“Saiga” operates by removing powder gases through a side hole in the wall of the barrel bore. In rifled versions, the gas piston with a rod is rigidly connected to the bolt frame. Smoothbore versions have a completely redesigned gas exhaust engine with a short piston stroke. After the bolt frame moves away to the required distance under the influence of gas pressure, the exhaust gases escape into the atmosphere through holes in the gas tube. The barrel bore is locked by turning the bolt, while the two lugs of the bolt fit into the corresponding grooves of the receiver.
The shutter is rotated by bevelling the bolt frame. The bolt frame is the leading element of the automation: it sets the direction of movement of the moving parts, absorbs most shock loads, and a return spring is placed in the longitudinal channel of the bolt frame (by analogy with submachine guns, it is sometimes not entirely correctly called “return-combat”). The reloading handle is located on the right and is integral with the bolt frame. When the bolt is unlocked by the bolt frame moving backwards, the cartridge case in the chamber is pre-displaced (“disturbed”).
This helps relieve pressure in the chamber and prevents the case from rupturing during subsequent removal, even if the chamber is very dirty. The ejection of the spent cartridge case to the right through the receiver window is ensured by a spring-loaded ejector mounted on the bolt and a rigid receiver reflector. The “hung” position of the moving parts in the receiver with relatively large gaps ensured reliable operation of the system even with heavy contamination.

- cartridges – 223 REM (5.56×45);
- barrel length - 420, 520, 560 millimeters;
- Magazine capacity – up to 10 rounds.
- weapon weight - 3.7 kilograms.
Based on these technical characteristics, we can assume that the weapon is ideal for a hunter of almost any size.
Hunting rifles Concern Kalashnikov caliber 223 Rem
Every hunter knows that the choice of weapon is paramount in this matter. First of all, it is necessary to determine the required technical characteristics and features of various manufacturers and types of weapons, on which the final cost will depend. Approach to purchasing a Kalashnikov Concern hunting rifle caliber 223 Rem
it is necessary with all responsibility, carefully selecting the right model.
The most common among hunters are smooth-bore rifles, which do not have a long firing range like rifled carbines, but have other advantages. To purchase them, you only need a weapons permit; you can use ammunition such as shot, buckshot or bullet. Rifled carbines allow you to hunt large animals due to the possibility of using large-caliber cartridges; they can also be used to conduct targeted shooting over long distances.
Smoothbore guns can be divided into several types:
- single-barreled (single-shot and multi-shot models, with the possibility of manual or automatic reloading);
- double-barreled (models with horizontal and vertical barrels).
Hunting weapons Concern Kalashnikov
can be classified as follows:
- smoothbore - the first stage for every hunter, with their help you can shoot at a target at a short and medium distance;
- rifled - will be needed for long-distance shooting and for hunting large animals;
- combined - combines all the advantages of the above types of weapons, since it can be used with various ammunition.
Before purchasing a hunting weapon, you should carefully study the features of each of the types presented above, pay attention to their features, capabilities and characteristics, and only after that make your final choice. It is also worth noting that to begin with, in any case, you need to purchase a smoothbore gun, and after 5 years of owning it, you will be able to obtain a license for a rifled carbine.
To select the most suitable model of Kalashnikov Concern hunting weapon, you can use a filter by parameters such as series, model, caliber and operating principle. After choosing, you will be able to order a Kalashnikov Concern hunting rifle caliber 223 Rem
in the World of Hunting online store.
The product is sold only in accordance with the established requirements of Federal Law No. 150 of December 13, 1996. “On Weapons”, as well as other requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation.
Advantages
According to reviews from hunters, Saiga-223 REM has a number of positive aspects. Here is a list of just the most frequently mentioned of them:
- relatively low cost compared to imported carbines;
- the ability to modify weapons with various devices and body kits;
- a unique and very convenient reloading mechanism;
- convenient open-type mechanical sight;
- reliable fuse;
- light weight.
Another definite plus is that the stock and fore-end can be made individually and to order. This allows the weapon to be used by people who are accustomed to shooting with their left hand.
Pros and cons of the Saiga-223 carbine
Although the Saiga series carbines are direct “descendants” of Kalashnikov assault rifles, it should be understood that the disadvantages that are inherent to the AK will remain in its hunting version. Despite the fact that the Saiga carbine often becomes the object of criticism, as a universal weapon it has a number of advantages:
- The low price made Saiga-223 the only alternative in its price category, since foreign analogues cost several times more;
- Most Saiga models can be equipped with various interchangeable components, which makes it possible to assemble the Saiga in accordance with your tastes;
- The automatic firing mode allows you to achieve a high rate of fire;
- Convenient fuse that has a significant reliability resource;
- The ability to order at the factory the modification that you like.
Naturally, for a professional hunter who has the financial ability to purchase foreign models of automatic carbines, the Saiga-223 is not an option. For an amateur hunter who goes hunting several times a season, Saiga-223 will be an excellent choice, especially since it is perfect for home protection.
Flaws
As a rule, most of the shortcomings are associated with some features of the modifications that were not to the taste of weapon owners. For example, judging by the reviews of hunters, the 20-caliber Saiga has too much spread at long distances. Complete absurdity! The weapon was specially produced for hunting from a distance of no more than 50 meters. Therefore, it is quite stupid to buy exactly a twenty, and then complain that the fraction does not reach the target.
Also, never pay attention to such reviews from hunters: “Saiga-MK-03-223 REM” has an inconvenient aiming bar, which does not allow you to hunt the desired game. What did the author of such a review look at when he purchased a weapon in a store?
Yes, Saiga has its drawbacks. The first batch of weapons was produced with a large number of defects, but this trend went away over time. If you are still unlucky and you purchase a defective sample, then any store will easily replace it with a new one. You just need to keep the box and receipt.

I'm sorry, my mistake is that I have a MK223 made by Legion with a 555 barrel and a purely metal frame stock; my partner has a Saiga MK223 with a 415 barrel (AK-74) made by IZHMASH, which was not sighted at 100m, they couldn't hit the target at 1.5m, I had to take out the front sight and couldn't shoot with the stock folded Maybe. The only drawback I have so far is that the aiming bar clings to clothes when walking and gets up

Let me tell you right away: I’m a teapot.
However, I read almost everything on the forum very carefully. Observation: there are only two topics about rifled Saiga, and there are woefully few comments.
I naively conclude that the Saiga is almost an ideal weapon, about which one cannot complain. And the owners are so accustomed to the impeccability of this weapon that they don’t even think about describing its advantages.
No, I, of course, understand that there are so-called functional niches, and ranting about the inability of some type of weapon to excel in something other than its niche is a stupid and thankless task. But in its niche, Saiga is the height of imaginable perfection, right? Does healthy heredity have an effect?
I am personally interested in Saiga with a “long” hunting barrel. 520 or 555 mm. Chambered for 7.62x39. And there are questions.
— Are there any advantages to an integral stock?
— Is a detachable buttstock somehow better than a folding one?
— Which stock do you recommend: wood or plastic?
—Which bed is “warmer” in the cold?
And one more thing... How sensitive are the losses of powder gas to the operation of automation compared to... Well, with some kind of bolt gun? Well, there’s Bars and his ilk.
And by the way, do any problems specific to the “long” barrel arise?
Please don’t send me to the Hansa - I’m full of their snobbery, thank you,

dark buttstock - compact and easy to transport.
The folding stock (Saiga version M1) is longer and more convenient than the folding stock.
More practical - plastic - does not scratch, does not get wet, lightweight; more pleasant - wooden (valuable types of wood - this design is not for everyone)
A long barrel is more accurate when hunting, there is less spread (although there are fans of medium barrels)
What's warmer in the cold? I don’t know, I don’t sleep on it in winter...
But pressing down for a couple of seconds to shoot doesn’t matter; in frosts below -20 degrees they usually don’t hunt, and imported cartridges change their characteristics at low temperatures (the laws of physics also apply to them).
I bought Saiga more than 7 years ago, I’m happy, it never let me down, I hit a black grouse from 120-150m with 2-3 shots. Cartridges Barnaul.
And why exactly the “7.62x39 cartridge.” » and not R.223

No, you are unfair, not to say disrespectful. I know a lot about calibers, I even drew a table for myself a long time ago to compare different parameters.
And the intermediate cartridge is a conscious choice. And the bullet is heavier, and the price...
By the way, thanks for the answer

I finally shot my carbine. The carbine is more accurate than the shooter. Among the mistakes: you need to train the tab so as not to look for the sight with your head. Plus the sight is constant and the vision is poor. But for the first time it was successful.
I shot Barnaul espanivka 4gr., Barnaul shell 4gr, and Centaur 3.5gr.
The centaur did not fly. The espanasia is not very good. The shell fit best.
According to the passport, the pile is 89mm. Well, it's better here. The instructor gave me 40.

Anton! Congratulations! Many people were looking forward to this event just as much as you.
Quite good hunting accuracy, so next - good luck on the hunt! Although it won't hurt to practice shooting. You have such friends that this won’t be difficult, if only you had time.
Question about the sight - does it have a stump? Just shooting at targets like this is not the best for optics. We shot at such targets from the open, it was fine there, well, with optics in the form of a stump mark, too. But for brand crosses, minute targets are still better. There, even a beginner can easily control the aiming accuracy in the sight - by combining the cross of the optics with the target.
You don't say anything about USM. Well, maybe you yourself didn’t understand what the instructor was saying? Did you sand it before shooting? The new ones always have steps when descending.
Down and Out trouble started! We look forward to further developments in your rifled endeavor! Good luck!

@Nikolai(Irk), thank you!
You need to train!
The sight is an ordinary Chinese Shch4.5x20 cross reticle, there is a backlight. That’s where all the bullets landed in the center; I turned on the backlight and the 4g shell flew off. The crown is specially designed so that the butt can be folded. But it has a short rail (in the photo with a carbine), or a small sight. They moved him as close to the shooter as possible. Therefore, I begin to stretch my neck, scour my head to find it. But this is all training, homework, so to speak: to invest correctly and immediately find the target.
Didn't do anything with the USM. And the instructor didn’t say anything.
My vision has become bad, it has dropped a lot in two years, so even with the glasses that I have it’s already tight.
Therefore, in the near future, leave it as is and train. In the off-season I want to do:
1. Install a kit to improve the performance of the trigger on AK-type ones (pictured). Only one of the two parts is needed.
2. Still, install a backlash-free cover with a strip from our Novosibirsk master. The reviews are very, very good.
3. Higher magnification sight. Some Chinese for 8-10 rubles.

Anton, take a closer look at the Hawke Vantage 3-9×40 scope
Otherwise they’re already recommending Redfield to you, but as I understand it, you’re not planning on the price tag. This one is within 5500r. I want to take it to Saiga 308. It can handle the recoil.
And in Pilade you will suffer in the same way with your eyesight, I have already experienced this myself and refused Pilade. The truth is in the direction of Red and Burris, well, you can’t forbid living beautifully (the picture has changed significantly). I think Hawke will have a better Pilade.
About USM, I also watched videos on how to fix it by inserting it. Good stuff. If you post it, brag about it and give me a link where to get it. Maybe I'll think about it too.

Tuning
According to reviews from hunters, Saiga-223 REM is one of the best platforms for modification. If you are somehow not satisfied with the standard equipment of the weapon, then you can easily change it yourself at home. In specialized stores you will find special components for this. Don't like the standard open sights? Get yourself a collimator. Do you feel discomfort when aiming? It might be worth thinking about replacing the stock with a more ergonomic one.
Also, to modify the carbine, you can purchase a large number of devices that not only improve the appearance of the weapon, but also its performance characteristics. Fans of night hunting are recommended to attach a thermal imager, night vision device or a regular under-barrel flashlight to the Saiga. And if you are crazy about edged weapons, then a bayonet-knife will look just right.
Disassembly
As mentioned earlier, the prototype of the Saiga was the AK-47, which is distinguished by its reliable and simple design. If you didn’t skip life safety classes at school, you can easily partially disassemble the Saiga in a matter of seconds. However, do not forget to completely unload the weapon and remove it from the safety lock before doing this.
It is also necessary to disassemble a self-loading carbine exclusively indoors and in a place specially equipped for this. This should be done slowly so as not to damage the parts in the process. Even the slightest deformation as a result of careless handling can lead to disruption of the entire mechanism.
Lubrication
Any weapon needs regular and thorough lubrication. “Saiga” is far from an exception in this regard. Lubrication of smooth-bore weapons is carried out no later than after 24 hours of use. Otherwise, the powder residue will turn into soot, which will then be very difficult to get rid of. Before lubrication, it is necessary to partially disassemble the weapon. It is recommended to use the cleaning rod that comes with the carbine, a clean rag and high-quality gun oil as tools.
First, you need to clean the muzzle channel, since this is where most traces of gunpowder accumulate. To do this, use a cleaning rod after dipping it in gun oil. We take out the tool, wipe it with a rag to remove carbon deposits, lubricate it with oil again and repeat the procedure. This must be done at least 8 times. Also, do not forget to lubricate other parts that are exposed to gunpowder, such as the bolt carrier, at the end.
Reviews
As mentioned earlier, most reviews about Saiga-223 REM can only be found positive. Owners praise the weapon for its unsurpassed technical characteristics, reliability and low price. However, you can also find negative comments, which, as a rule, were left by owners who were dissatisfied with this or that self-loading carbine system. That is why novice hunters are recommended to first study information about firearms, and only then go to the store to buy them. Well, if you come across a truly defective sample, you can return it to the store for an exchange or correct the defects at home.
