Carbine "Vepr-12 Hammer": caliber, hunter reviews

The creation of the domestic weapon “Vepr-12 Hammer” was due to the launch into mass production of “Saiga” smoothbore shotguns, which began to be in great demand among the population. However, after a couple of years of operation, negative reviews about these modifications began to appear, especially consumers complaining about multiple misfires. The Molot plant, taking into account the interest in smooth-bore weapons, began developing its own modification in this segment. The design took a little time, the shortcomings were eliminated and the main advantages observed from the competitor were taken.

General information

It is worth noting that the basis for the first Saiga was the Kalashnikov assault rifle; production of the model was established at Izhmash. The combat version was redesigned with the expectation of using civilian charges. The main reason for the low quality of smooth bores is the workload of the plant’s power lines. The AK and a light machine gun based on it are also produced here. Government orders are in huge quantities with requirements for high strength and quality.

The Vepr-12 Molot version became an independently produced unit. The weapon is not designed for hunting any animal. The fact is that it was originally intended for civil self-defense, sports shooting and operation by the relevant structures.

Why is Vepr 308 better than Saiga 308?

In an effort to somehow decorate the Saiga, the manufacturer carved a deer on the butt. Judging by the reviews, some owners are not satisfied with the quality of this image. In addition, the wood is yellow in color.

There is also a 4mm gap between the receiver and the stock. Compared to the Saiga, which is dominated by refined and soft outlines, the Vepr is militarized, with straight and hard lines. The wood has a distinct texture and a pleasant dark brown color.

Unlike the Saiga, the Vepr has a better design of the flash suppressor front sight unit. The developer specially shaped the front sight so that it would be ergonomic and would not cling to the shooter’s clothing. In order to reduce recoil, the butts of these carbines were equipped with rubber butt pads. "Vepr" and "Saiga" are equipped with the same 4x32 sights. The type of mesh is “stump”, represented by two side and one bottom lines. It is very effective when shooting offhand.

The optical sight on the Vepr is mounted using a standard quick-release bracket, which is also perfect for the Saiga. Compared to the Veprem, this carbine is more versatile. The fact is that in this shooting unit the butt is longer, and the cheek in it is located higher. The Vepr, like the Dragunov sniper rifle, has an orthopedic butt that can be comfortably grasped with one hand. However, due to the fact that it is slightly shorter, the shooting process is uncomfortable. In addition, the optics in it are placed quite high, as a result of which the shooter’s cheek will hang in the air. Both carbines have the same 520mm barrels.

Device

"Vepr-12 Hammer" has an internal design and the principle of operation is as similar as possible to the work of the products of Izhevsk gunsmiths ("Saiga"). The combat and operational parameters of competitors differ minimally from each other. As practice shows, the operation of the automation of the weapon in question is most similar to the “Tactics” model

The sighting device is made in a classic design with a front sight and an adjustable rear sight. The mount was placed on the edge of the gas outlet tube. The sight can be adjusted in several positions, which are responsible for the firing range taking into account the ammunition used. The weapon "Vepr-12 Hammer" VPO-205 has a shortened aiming line. The optimal result is shown by shooting with bullets; buckshot produces a slightly worse effect. In the second case, it is preferable to use an aiming bar.

The folding stock of the skeletal configuration is based on a reinforced metal frame. The outer covering is plastic, the butt plate is equipped with a rubber pad. Jumpers are used as fasteners. The designers have provided for height adjustment of the stock, which makes it possible to increase the comfort of firing when shooting from an open or additional sight. The rotary cheek is responsible for changing the parameter.

Design features

The Vepr-12 Molot carbine is equipped with a magazine receiver that protects the clip and the window in the receiver from deformation when dropped. The design of the handle, gas lining, and forend is identical to that of the Kalashnikov light machine gun. The outer part is finished with black polymer material. The handle is made in orthopedic design.

The shutter delay allows the shooter to save a few seconds on reloading. The fact is that when firing in quick bursts, you can get carried away and miss the period when the small magazine is completely empty. The bolt stop notifies that the charges have run out, after which a quick reload is carried out and shooting continues.

The caliber of the Vepr-12 Hammer is 12, the chamber length is 76 millimeters. Standard charges, as well as high-power Magnum-type ammunition, are suitable for use.

All modifications of the weapon in question are equipped with several Picatinny rail attachments. The elements are located on the receiver cover, on the bottom edge of the forend and on the barrel. Each of the strips has its own practical application. On the box they are used for mounting optics or other additional sights. Using the above elements, the forend is equipped with an additional handle, the barrel is equipped with a tactical flashlight or laser guidance.

About additional accessories

Owners of Vepr-12 smoothbore carbines can, if desired, equip their weapons with the following accessories and equipment:

  • Muzzle brake-compensator and muzzle attachment-flame suppressor.
  • Various chokes and barrel extensions. Judging by numerous reviews, many shooters install special “paradox” attachments on carbines.
  • Telescopic folding bipod.

  • Welded steel or cast duralumin shaft of the clip receiver.
  • Various handguard options. Judging by the reviews, many people install Weaver rails on carbines. It makes it possible to equip the weapon with a front handle, a tactical flashlight, and a laser target designator.

  • Sporty ergonomic handles. Thanks to the ability to adjust them, the carabiners become much more comfortable to hold.
  • Various covers for receivers. Accessories can be plastic or metal.
  • Box magazines with a capacity of 4, 8 and 10 rounds of ammunition.
  • Drum (rotary) magazines for 10 rounds.
  • Folding and telescopic butts.
  • Laser and diode infrared illuminators for night sighting devices.

Recommendations

Timely and proper care of the Vepr-12 Molot smoothbore carbine guarantees its stable operation. For example, when using lead charges, many users are faced with the problem of “lead” (microscopic particles of material are deposited on the barrel walls). In the future, this affects the quality of passage of the cartridge, the diameter of which is as close as possible to the size of the barrel bore.

In addition to regular cleaning of the tool, you should not forget about disassembling the product. This procedure is required to check the serviceability and integrity of internal parts and elements. They also need to be cleared of dirt and dust, cleaned and lubricated. Proper maintenance of the rifle ensures its efficiency and long service life.

Additional equipment

Factory short-barreled modifications of the Vepr-12 Hammer VPO-205 are equipped with a black plastic body kit. The exterior of the model resembles a modern weapon that has nothing in common with versions from the last century. The equipment is of a removable type, it can be dismantled for washing and cleaning the product, or admiring the classic design. Thanks to a variety of special straps, the carabiner can be equipped with various additional equipment.

At one end the barrel has a thread that serves to secure a standard flash suppressor. The installation of special nozzles known as a choke or a choke allows you to achieve a narrowing or widening of shot spread. When operating them, restrictions on the types of ammunition used should be taken into account. In this case, it is better for beginners to consult with a weapons specialist.

Popular models and their characteristics

"Vepr-12 Hammer"

This smoothbore carbine is available in three versions: “Vepr-12 Molot”, “Vepr-12 Molot” isp. 01, "Vepr-12 Hammer" isp. 02.

A removable flash suppressor is installed on the muzzle of the barrel, which distinguishes the Vepr-12 from other modifications. The carbine has a trigger locking mechanism that prevents shooting with the butt folded. “Vepr-12 Molot-01” is a version that has a barrel increased to 520 mm and a non-removable flash suppressor. It is possible to fire with the stock folded. "Vepr-12 Molot-02" is a smooth-bore carbine with a barrel length of 680 mm. In the muzzle of the barrel there is a base for installing internal muzzle bushings.

"Vepr-308"

Rifled carbine "Vepr" of 7.62 mm caliber, designed for use of .308 Win cartridges. In terms of power, it is only slightly inferior to the Tiger carbine, with which 7.62x54 ammunition is used. The initial bullet speed is 830 m/s.

The barrel length of this version of the Vepr can be 520 or 590 mm. The carbine is equipped with a magazine with a capacity of 7 or 10 rounds. Maximum weight without optical sight and other accessories is 4.05 kg.

"Vepr-Super"

Another rifled carbine chambered for .308 Win (7.62×51 mm), part of the Veprey model range. With a total body length of 1000 mm, it has a barrel length of 625 mm. Weight is 4.69 kg.

Improved aiming

According to reviews, the Vepr-12 Molot can be used with both optical sights and collimators. With proper handling of the second type of device, accuracy of hitting the target is guaranteed from 50-70 meters. Optics are more effective at long distances, however, the stopping power at long distances is low.

Accuracy is also improved by installing a compensator. Automatic weapons, regardless of type, are moved to the side under the influence of exhaust gases, as a result of which the line of sight shifts. The compensator allows you to direct part of the powder exhaust in the required direction, which makes it possible to protect the barrel from significant movement, increasing the accuracy of the shot.

An extension with a thread inside is allowed to be installed on the barrel thread of the carbine. Such a weapon is no longer smooth-bore, but is being re-qualified as a rifled version. Due to the twist, the accuracy of firing at long distances is increased.

Design

The Vepr carbine makes maximum use of parts and components of the Kalashnikov light machine gun. The carbine is automatically reloaded using the energy of the powder gases, which are diverted from the barrel at the moment of firing into the gas chamber, as well as using the energy of the return spring.

The main differences between the Vepr and the RPK are in the design of the butt and trigger mechanism. The carbines are equipped with orthopedic butts of the “Dragunov type”. The self-timer, which allows firing in bursts, is excluded from the trigger mechanism. Another feature of the “Vepr” is the forend, which is much longer than that of the RPK, without a protective lining in the upper part.

The bore and chamber are chrome-plated, which increases their service life. A non-removable flash suppressor is installed on the muzzle, which reduces the flash when fired. The fuse is a flag type. The open sight allows for targeted shooting at distances of up to 300-350 meters. The Vepr hunting rifle can also be equipped with an optical sight. The carabiner is designed for use at temperatures from -50 to +50 degrees.

All Vepris intended for export, as well as some versions for the Russian market, are equipped with a spring-loaded firing pin. It is needed so that it is possible to safely use foreign-made cartridges, which have more sensitive primers than Russian ones. As a result, in a carbine with a non-spring striker, when the bolt is not completely closed, inertial puncture of such ammunition may occur while it is being chambered. The result is damage to the weapon and injury to the shooter. When using domestically produced cartridges there is no such problem.

Operating principle of Vepr carbines:

  1. When the return spring moves the bolt carrier and bolt forward, the cartridge is sent from the magazine into the chamber.
  2. As the bolt rotates, the barrel bore is locked, the hammer engages the trigger, and the ejector slides over the rim of the cartridge case.
  3. When you press the trigger, the trigger is released from it, and then hits the firing pin, driven by the mainspring, and a shot occurs.
  4. The carbine is automatically reloaded.

Reload

Reloading of the Vepr-12 Molot 03 carbine occurs after a shot through the use of powder gases. A shortened barrel often does not create the necessary force, which is why the bolt does not move all the way and prevents cartridge changes. An additional obstacle is the rigid return spring, which requires significant costs to jerk the shutter.

One of the options for solving this problem is the use of powerful Magnum ammunition, which provides the proper pressure from the exhaust gases. This also has its drawbacks. Strong recoil can harm the shooter, and even knock an inexperienced user off his feet. The situation is corrected by installing a shock-absorbing spring on the butt. The second disadvantage is excessive noise.

Another option for increasing pressure is muzzle constriction. This will reduce the rate of gas inlet. Among the disadvantages is the choice of cartridge based on the type of choke or choke, and not on personal preferences and tasks. If none of the methods is suitable, you just have to wait until the spring develops and weakens.

Modifications

Based on the carbine in question, several types of weapons are produced. Among them:

  1. Model “12-00” is a shotgun with a barrel measuring 430 millimeters. The design includes a folding stock; safety is ensured by a special device that does not allow firing when folded. Also included is a removable type compensator.
  2. Version "12-01". This product has a barrel length of 530 millimeters, the butt does not fold, and there is no trigger locking system. The compensator is rigid and cannot be removed.
  3. Modification "12-02". The barrel length is 680 mm, the kit does not include a compensator, but there are various choke attachments. The threaded connection makes it possible to install a special extension to increase the accuracy of firing.
  4. "Vepr-12 Molot 205-03". The weapon is equipped with the shortest barrel in the series (305 mm). The design includes a compensator and a firing limiter when folded. The weight of the product without ammunition is 4.2 kg.
