Crosman 1077 Air Rifle - “Rat” Review

Linguistics

Let's look at linguistics. On the Internet, the name of the rifle is written as CroSman or CroSSman. Do you have any doubts about the right way? Then the correct answer is:

Like this. But that’s okay, you often come across these variants of the same rifle:

It is often sold under the same name in our small shops. I couldn’t find a representative office of the Grosman company (Grosman 1077) on the Internet, so there is reason to doubt the truth of the inscription. Therefore, we will assume that these samples are at least structurally similar.

In folklore, the difficult-to-pronounce Crosman 1077 is simply replaced with the word “Rat.” It can also be used in the masculine gender - “Rats”.

About the disadvantages

According to Crosman 2100 owners, these rifles have the following weaknesses:

  • With intensive use of steel balls, the barrel rifling wears out very quickly.
  • The air reservoir is equipped with insufficiently high-quality rubber gaskets.
  • The injection pump often fails.
  • The plastic coating on the butt breaks.
  • The rifle barrel is bent. According to gun owners, the cause of this may be excessive tightening of the rear sight screws.
  • The duration of shooting depends on the physical capabilities of the shooter. Since the weapon is equipped with a manual pumping system, the shooter's hands can get tired quickly. Therefore, beginners do not necessarily need to use the maximum power pump of the rifle.

Specifications

That seems to be all, possible contradictions have been eliminated, now we can move on to the technical part.

The Crosman 1077 air rifle has been in production since 1994, so it has undergone a number of changes over the years, and may vary among owners. Some of the latest performance characteristics:

  • Construction - CO2

  • Rifling - 9, right-handed
  • Barrel length, mm - 513
  • Barrel weight, kg - 0.245
  • The operation of the trigger is only self-cocking
  • Safety lock - yes, non-automatic
  • CO2 source - 12 gram canister
  • Spray shots - 40
  • Type of ammunition - lead only
  • Initial bullet speed (0.5 g), m/s – up to 190 (numbers vary)
  • Overall dimensions, mm - 905x193x51

  • Standard sights - rear sight and front sight
  • Magazine - yes, drum clip for 12 bullets
  • Sound moderator - no
  • Bed material – plastic (wood modifications available)

I will make a couple of comments on the performance characteristics with small practical digressions.

Currently, the Crosman 1077 rifle occupies a significant place in the hardball community. There is probably not a single team in our country that does not acquire this type of weapon. And where it was not purchased, it was certainly considered or is being considered as an option for a tactical sniper. The rifle is really popular, in some ways it can be a direct competitor to the MP-512.

So what's the trick? And the tricks in our country start with prices. If the price is low, it means the sample can be popular. Currently, Crosman 1077 pneumatics can be purchased at retail for about 6,000 rubles. For a foreign rifle this is a more than decent price.

The next important point is the initial speed . Often owners receive samples with a rating of 185-190 m/s (depending on the modification), and this is already prohibitive power for hardball rules. But still, the rat is allowed everywhere and its power is trusted by default. Internet speed measurements also indicate that on average it is within these limits.

And the last, no less important feature from the performance characteristics is multi-charging and CO2 operation. It is this point that makes it a dangerous weapon in the hands of a skilled sniper. Of course, this sample is not the only one that runs on CO2, but all other things being equal, the result is a very competitive unit.

Now, in a slightly non-standard way, let’s immediately summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the Crosman 1077 air rifles.

Device

This rifle can be divided into several main elements:

  • Pumping mechanism. It consists of a guide pipe in which the piston and pusher move. An under-barrel lever is attached to it through a connecting rod. Its axis is located under the barrel and is attached to the guide tube using axial pins.
  • Storage chamber. It consists of a bypass and a valve that separates air from the barrel. The trigger consists of a fuse, a trigger and a sear, which interacts with the valve.
  • The receiver includes a rammer, a magazine receiver, and a bypass channel. And also the trunk itself.
  • Sights are installed in two types, namely mechanical with fiber-optic thread, so that you can fire in limited lighting conditions, as well as a 4x optical sight.

Even more details

Now let's dwell a little on quality. As already mentioned, the Crosman 1077 is made of plastic, so there have been different cases in people’s practice. Reviews and opinions can be both positive and negative. In our case with the rats, everything was fine, nothing fell apart, and there were no problems with the trunk. There were store breakdowns, which caused some crisis before the long-awaited purchase, but overall everything was on par. An example of a bad review can be read at the end of the article.

Due to the plastic, the Crosman 1077 air rifle loses a lot of weight, which, again, may seem inconvenient to some.

The barrel is steel, rifled. According to people's experience, good accuracy is ensured. At a distance of up to 50 meters – 49-57 mm.

Now about food. One 12-gram cylinder is used (you can also take Crosman cylinders for Crosman). Its landing location is under the barrel inside the fore-end. Calmly unscrew the screw, insert the cylinder and also calmly tighten it.

To realize its multi-charge capability, the rifle uses a magazine with a drum for 12 bullets. Of our analogues, the MP-651 immediately comes to mind. Here we should not forget, again, about the material of the magazine; if handled hard, breakdowns and even losses are possible (but not obligatory). I also note that the bullets are loaded from the back of the drum, and the rotation goes counterclockwise (well, you never know who wants to try Russian roulette).

Shooting is carried out only by self-cocking. There are no special problems with addiction. There is also a safety on the trigger guard.

Standard sights are front sight and rear sight. The front sight comes with a fiber optic thread. It’s clear that a rat without optics is not a sniper rifle, so from the very first days installing optics is a must. For this purpose, a 11mm dovetail is provided. But again, do not forget about the material of manufacture, and we try not to overload the sample. Owners also note an imbalance in the rifle when installing a scope, which leads to the need to artificially weight the insides of this barrel.

For snipers, it is worth noting the absence of recoil and much noise when fired. The Crosman 1077 rifle really shoots quietly, but the bullets from it (by the way, no need to poke the balls here) rushing past your head already whistle with a howl.

The sample also took part in one of our studies, as a result of which the reliable firing range of the Crosman 1077 is 70 meters.

So, a small conclusion . Despite the shortcomings and criticism, the Crosman 1077 airgun still claims to maintain a significant place in the hardball community for many years to come. In terms of price, rate of fire, accuracy, this is the best choice for novice support snipers. It is also worth noting the possibility of tuning and upgrading (conversion to air, valve boring, etc.), and if something breaks, you can usually find any spare parts on sale. I won’t give any advice on choosing here, but to finish, as promised, I’ll attach a review from the owner of this miracle, so to speak, the Crosman 1077 through the eyes of the owner. And it’s up to you to take it or not.

PS as an interesting addition - the rifle was adopted in the USA for training of the youth biathlon team, and local boy scouts also came under the same bench. So if you are seen with this rifle at the ready in the middle of a crowded place, carry skis with you and look like a lost American biathlete.

Possible tuning

This rifle, when the permissible pressure is exceeded, begins to bleed it. To avoid this, you can change the safety valve spring to a more powerful one or completely seal the hole. As a result, you can significantly increase your speed. But remember that by doing this, you will not only shorten the service life of the weapon, but also create a threat to your own life, since if it explodes it can cause serious injuries.

The main thing you can do is simply maintain it on time and ensure that your air gun is in good working order. It is better to operate it at the pressure specified by the manufacturer.

Crosman 1077 reviews

I am an almost happy owner of a Rat and a very happy owner of an IZH-61. So that’s the problem, that Americans don’t know how to do anything. The Rat has several significant flaws. 1 The material used to make the receiver is plastic, plus the plastic is very fragile, fortunately it fits more than two-thirds into the stock. We will consider this not significant. 2. trunk! It was necessary to figure out how to insert the barrel itself into a hollow false barrel, which is why the screw is light and therefore has a strong tilt. 3. fur. Part! This is a separate topic for discussion, if the trigger mechanism is simple from a mechanical point of view, which adds to its reliability to some extent, then what it is made of leaves you disappointed (plastic from Chinese air springs) and the stroke is not adjustable, although predictable. 3 and probably the most important thing is that the system has a capillary connection in the form of a simply inserted tube from the needle to the dilator. the camera from where I personally have air poisoning, but the whole problem is that they use it in races. the chamber and the tube from the cylinder to it are only rubber! SINGLE! connection, and the tube itself is not rigidly fixed in the receiver body. From the experience of playing with this device, I can say that when you attach the Trijikon sight, it is very likely to fall over (low weight), the same reason does not give the feeling of the weapon when aiming, it is too light. In terms of shooting, you can’t expect accuracy at long distances, especially with tempo shooting, since if you even feel the recoil on the first shot (POWER), then after the fifth it’s not the same! And to summarize, I would like to say the following: the Rat, a support weapon, and quite fragile at that, 12 bullets in the magazine are reduced to zero value with its problems, it’s better than the Izh-61, although there are 5 and it’s not a machine gun, but it’s reliable for that!!! And even better is MP-512 or AirMagnum 850XT. This is my first review, so don't judge too harshly.

How does it work?

The Crosman-2100 blowgun is equipped with a special system that allows for reusable manual air pumping. If the shooter plans to shoot a lead bullet, this ammunition is loaded into the rifle by hand. If steel explosive balls are used, they are supplied from the magazine automatically.

After the shooter has loaded the rifle, he must create the air pressure necessary to eject the projectile. Especially for this purpose, the Crosman 2100 design has a special lever connected to the piston, with the help of which air is pumped into the tank.

With two or three pumps of the lever, you can accumulate enough air to fire a shot. Maximum power can be achieved only by performing at least ten such pumping movements with the lever. Next, you need to turn off the safety on the Crosman 2100 rifle. Firing a gun is possible only after completing these steps. After firing the shot, the blowgun must be put on safety again and, using the lever, again fill the tank with air, using physical effort to do this.

Which optics should you choose?

The rifle comes standard with a Center Point 4×32 optical sight, the mounts of which are designed for a dovetail rail. The quality of this product is not very high, and the twisted spring and double recoil quickly disable it (the lenses begin to wear out). You can replace it with models with the same type of mount (bar width 11 mm) and not bother purchasing diopter optics - after all, the Optimus’s sighting range is not a kilometer.

For example, the Sightmark SM 13003 CDT red dot sight. Its body is made of aircraft aluminum, the mount is designed for installation on dovetail bars without additional rings. This reduces the chance of you tearing it off if it gets caught on branches or uneven terrain. Has a waterproof design. Four types of aiming marks, seven gradations of brightness. The lens is crystalline, with a multi-layer brightening coating, its size is 33 x 24 mm. The weight of the sight including the battery (CR2032) is 120 grams.

Disassembly and care

Step-by-step procedure for disassembling the Crosman air rifle:

  1. unscrew two screws on the sides of the forend and the third on the back of the trigger bracket;
  2. unscrew the screw holding the barrel, remove the cocking lever and the barrel itself;
  3. use a needle or thin awl to pry up the bypass seal and remove it;
  4. remove the false back cover, unscrew the screw-nut that connects the release mechanism and the compressor;
  5. secure the compressor with a clamp, place a metal circle (you can use a coin) under the backdrop and carefully knock out the pin;
  6. remove the release mechanism and the backplate along with the spring;
  7. use a screwdriver to hook the piston through the groove and remove it.

You need to disassemble the air rifle without the slightest haste, without dropping small parts. Reassemble in reverse order.

The Crosman Fury does not require special care; you need to wipe the steel surfaces of the rifle with a flannel moistened with motor oil, clean the barrel with a plastic braided cleaning rod with a brass brush and lubricate.

Application

Air rifles are used:

  • During training sessions. These blowguns are considered a good option for acquiring initial precision shooting skills. By dealing with small ammunition and an optical sight, the student develops such qualities as accuracy and precision.
  • Rifles are very effective for hunting birds and small game.
  • Modifications of the Crosman 2100 are used during sports competitions.
  • For fun shooting.

What to look for when purchasing?

Before purchasing a blowgun, it must be carefully inspected. Judging by the reviews, products may be supplied to the shelves in which the muzzle channel contains a long groove. In some cases, its length is 50 mm, and sometimes it stretches across the entire trunk. It is desirable that the channel does not contain unnecessary grooves. Often, various dents and cracks appear on the plastic receiver. In addition, pump failures are considered the most common for the Crosman 2100. Therefore, before purchasing a rifle, it is recommended to pump it several times and inspect the accumulator and cuffs.
