In accordance with the resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of 1958, the OKB P.O. Sukhoi began the development of the T-3-8M air target interception complex with K-8M missiles. The OKB designated the aircraft T-47. To accommodate the military Almaz radar and the ASP-5N optical sight, the nose of the fuselage had to be modified. To ensure the required radiation patterns of the interceptor's antennas, cutouts were made on the sides of the forward fuselage, which were covered with radio-transparent panels.
In January 1958, test pilot E.K. Kukushev was the first to take the T-47 into the air. After 15 flights, the vehicle was laid up, having first removed the engine (it was required for the fourth production PT-8-4, equipped with both cannon and missile weapons). The converted PT-8-4 differed from other production vehicles by the AL-7F engine with compressor blades mounted at an angle of 9° and equipment for oxygen starting. This machine was used for several dozen flights by various pilots. At the end of the summer of 1958, the PT-8-4 aircraft, piloted by test pilot E.V. Elyan, after landing at high speed, rolled off the runway and was damaged. In 1957, Plant No. 153 was supposed to produce 50 T-47 interceptors. In total, the plant built ten T-47s with the Almaz radar and guns. The first production aircraft were equipped with AL-7F engines and, after their service life was exhausted, had to be replaced with AL-7F-1.
The first aircraft of the T-3-8M complex, not yet fully equipped with equipment and weapons, was converted from the serial PT-8 at the OKB-51 pilot plant. At the end of 1958, flight tests of the head prototype of the future Su-11 began under the designation T-47-3. Unlike vehicles with the Almaz radar, the nose radio-transparent panels and the wing “tooth” disappeared from the Su-11 prototype. On both sides of the fuselage there are fairings for electrical cables. The onboard equipment of the T-3-8M interception complex included the Vozdukh-1 automatic interception control system with the Lazur radio command line for automated data transmission and the Orel radar. The onboard complex ensured the interception of targets in the rear hemisphere flying at speeds of up to 1800 km/h.
At the end of 1959, joint state tests of the T-3-8M complex with the K-8M missile launcher began. The State Commission's act on completion of testing was approved on June 8, 1961, and a month later the T-47-8 aircraft, piloted by test pilot E.N. Solovyov, took part in the Tushino parade. The complex ensured the interception of targets flying at speeds of up to 1,600 km/h at altitudes of up to 23,000 m. The radar target detection range was 25-26 km, and hitting the target was ensured by the launch of two missiles with a probability of 0.8-0.9. During one of the test flights (by pilot BC Ilyushin) at an altitude of about 20 km, the Su-11 engine failed. The pilot tried several times to launch it, but to no avail. Ilyushin managed to land a car without an engine for the first time in our country.
Compared to the Su-9, there were only a few Su-11s produced (about 100), and they did not last long. Operation of the Su-11 in units was accompanied by a high accident rate, often associated with engine failure. This reason, according to the developer, was the discrepancy between the flow characteristics of the air intake and the turbojet engine. Su-9 and Su-11 fighters remained the fastest and highest altitude air defense aircraft in the country until 1969, when they were replaced by MiG-25 fighters. The last fighters of this type were withdrawn from service in 1980, i.e. served in service for more than 20 years.
