Su-6 attack aircraft
In 1940, the Su-2 (BB-1) bomber, designed by Pavel Osipovich Sukhoi, was put into production. This aircraft was created as part of the Ivanov program, which implied the creation of a single-engine, mass-produced multi-role aircraft capable of performing the functions of a reconnaissance aircraft and a light bomber. The Su-2 differed from other Soviet aircraft of this class in its advanced manufacturing technology and good visibility from the cockpit.
Su-2
Despite all the advantages of the new aircraft, it was ineffective when used as an attack aircraft. To do this, it was necessary to strengthen weapons and increase security. Preliminary calculations showed the impossibility of implementing this on the Su-2 without deteriorating flight data. Therefore, it was decided to build a new aircraft.
In September 1939, a preliminary design for an armored attack aircraft was presented, and in early March the government included it in the experimental aircraft construction plan for 1940. The design team of P. O. Sukhoi was instructed: “To design and build a single-engine armored single-seat attack aircraft with an M-71 engine.”
The main difficulties in creating an attack aircraft were associated with the lack of air-conditioned M-71 engines. This 18-cylinder two-row radial engine with rated/maximum power is 1700/2000 hp. It was developed by A.D. Shvetsov and was a further development of the American Wright “Cyclone” R-1820.
The first version of the Su-6 was equipped with six ShKAS machine guns (2 of them synchronous). The intra-fuselage payload was designed in the following options: a) FAB-100 bomb; b) 2 FAB-50 bombs; c) 18 bombs AO-10, AO-15 or A0-20; d) 72 bombs of caliber from 1.0 to 2.5 kg. In addition, attack aircraft could carry 2 FAB-100 bombs or 2 FAB-250 bombs on an external sling. The armor for the aircraft was designed in the form of an “armored trough”, which protected the pilot’s cabin from below. The armored back prevented the pilot from being hit from behind, and the bent armor plate covered the gas tank. Pilot protection from the sides - up to the chest. There was no reservation in front. The pilot's head on top and the oil cooler in the original version also did not have protection.
On March 1, 1941, test pilot of plant No. 289 A.I. Kokin took into the air the first prototype of the Su-6 aircraft. By May 1941, about ten flights were completed under the test program, during which a number of defects in the power plant and aircraft systems were discovered and eliminated. The biggest complaint was the engine. In this regard, the testing of the aircraft was delayed, and the outbreak of war and the subsequent evacuation aggravated the situation.
The Su-6 was able to enter state tests only in January 1942. The attack aircraft had increased armament and armor.
Test pilots noted the ease of control, the best flight and aerobatic properties of the aircraft compared to the serial Il-2 attack aircraft. The state test report of the Air Force Research Institute reflected the following data: – Maximum ground speed – 445 km/h. – Maximum speed in afterburner – 496 km/h. – Maximum speed at an altitude of 2500 m – 491 km/h. – Range at 0.9 maximum speed – 450 km. Armament: – 2 cannons of 23 mm caliber – 4 machine guns of 7.62 mm caliber – 10 beams PC-132 or RS-82 Normal bomb load is 200 kg, with a bomb bay capacity of 400 kg. There is a suspension under the wings of 2 bombs of 100 kg or 2 VAP-200,
In terms of piloting technique, the aircraft is simple and accessible to average pilots, has good stability and allows flight with the stick thrown in all modes. However, it was noted that the visibility while taxiing is insufficient and therefore it is necessary to steer in a snake manner. In the air, visibility was rated as satisfactory. The armoring of the cockpit and canopy is carried out similarly to the Il-2 aircraft. The rear cover of the engine with the units is armored, the engine cylinders are not armored. The state test report also stated: “... the Su-6 aircraft with the M-71 engine is higher in maximum horizontal flight speed than the Il-2 AM-38 attack aircraft; — after completing the mission (dropping bombs and PC-132), the Su-6 M-71 aircraft has a maximum speed of 483 km/h in a ten-minute afterburner. This speed makes the Su-6 aircraft difficult to reach by enemy fighters who have a slight speed advantage; — consider it expedient to build a small military series of Su-6 M-71 aircraft, as they are of interest due to their relatively high maximum horizontal speed and have powerful small arms, cannon and jet weapons.”
Despite the successful testing, the new attack aircraft was not put into production. At that most difficult time for the country, mastering the production of a new attack aircraft and the engine for it would inevitably affect the rate of production of attack aircraft urgently needed by the front.
However, improvement of the aircraft continued. To improve flight characteristics, the Su-6 was equipped with an uprated M-71F engine with a nominal/maximum power of 1850/2200 hp.
But by this time, based on the experience of combat operations, a two-seat version was already required. The two-seat armored attack aircraft Su-6 with the M-71F engine was designed and built in 1942 and brilliantly passed state tests from June 20 to August 30, 1943. The Su-6 had excellent stability and controllability characteristics and was simple and pleasant to pilot.
The aircraft was equipped with powerful wing mechanization (it had automatic slats and Schrenk flaps), which made it possible to perform stable maneuvers at high angles of attack. This was very important for a battlefield aircraft designed to operate at low altitude. To launch an attack in a limited space above the target, the pilot had to maneuver primarily in the vertical plane. It was possible to significantly improve the performance of the Su-6 in comparison with the Il-2 without deteriorating maneuverability in the vertical plane by reducing the load on engine power. Thus, the serial Il-2 with AM-38F with a wing load of 159 - 163 kg/m² had a vertical speed at the ground of about 7.2 m/s, and the Su-6 with a load of 212.85 kg/m² - 9.3 m/s.
The armor of the Su-6 was significantly more advanced than that of the Il-2. Thanks to a more rational distribution of sheet thicknesses, the total armor mass was only 683 kg—18.3% of the empty weight of the aircraft. The thickness of the armor in the gunner's cockpit and in the area of the propeller group was chosen taking into account the influence of the aircraft's structural elements (fuselage skin, bomb bays, etc.) on the geometry of the impact of the projectile with the armor from the most likely firing directions in a real air battle. This approach made it possible to significantly reduce the weight of the armor with significantly better protection for the crew and vital elements of the aircraft’s structure than that of the Il-2, in which, with a total armor weight of 957 kg, the air gunner had practically no protection, and the armor parts most vulnerable to enemy fire turned out to be insufficiently thick . The survivability of the attack aircraft was also increased by pressurizing the gas tank with exhaust gases and duplicating the control of the elevators and rudder. And the air-cooled engine itself was much more durable in case of combat damage.
The aircraft had certain reserves in terms of increased armor protection. Based on the experience of combat operations, it was possible to replace the upper frontal armor of the hood with duralumin sheets, since this part of the aircraft practically did not come under fire.
The two-seat Su-6 had very powerful weapons, it included two 37-mm NS-37 cannons (90 rounds of ammunition), two ShKAS machine guns (1,400 rounds), a defensive UBT machine gun (196 rounds in four boxes) in a BLUB blister mount, 200 kg bombs and six RS-132 or RS-82. Two FAB-100 bombs could additionally be suspended on the external sling.
Compared to the Il-2 variant, which was armed with 37 mm air cannons, the Su-6's shooting accuracy was significantly higher. This happened due to the fact that on the Su-6 the guns were located much closer and when firing, as was the case on the Il-2, they were practically not felt. It was also possible to fire from one gun. The plane was turning, but not so much. Such powerful weapons significantly increased the ability to combat armored targets.
During state tests, the two-seater Su-6 aircraft received high praise, and in conclusion, based on the Air Force report, the space agency raises the question of introducing the aircraft into series. Comparative data of the Su-6 and Il-2 aircraft are as follows: The ground speed of the Su-6 is 107 km/h greater than that of the Il-2. The speed at an altitude of 4000 m is 146 km/h greater than that of the Il-2. Service ceiling. 2500 m longer than the Il-2 Flight range 353 km longer than the Il-2
The Su-6, having excellent maneuverability and speed characteristics, could be successfully used to combat enemy bombers and transport aircraft. It also turned out to be a very difficult target for fighters. This was confirmed in 1944 in test air battles with the Yak-3 fighter.
By the time the two-seat Su-6 was created, Air Force specialists already had a large amount of statistical data to analyze the causes of losses of aircraft for various purposes, including attack aircraft. The conclusions of the report of the 2nd Department of the Operations Directorate of the Air Force Headquarters on the analysis of aviation losses (August 1943) noted that of all flight performance characteristics, it is maneuverability that has a decisive influence on combat survivability when operating against ground targets. Specialists from the Air Force Research Institute put forward similar demands. They paid special attention to the horizontal and vertical maneuverability of the promising attack aircraft, equipping it with an air-cooled engine, as well as increasing the efficiency of armor protection while simultaneously reducing the share of armor in the flight weight.
The Air Force leadership believed that the Su-6 was the machine that Soviet aviation lacked. In his opinion, NKAP had the opportunity to put into production the M-71F engine and the Su-6 aircraft. The production of M-71F engines and Su-6 attack aircraft could be established at existing capacities by reducing the production volumes of M-82F and M-82FN engines and Il-2 attack aircraft. This could not greatly affect the general situation at the front. In the rear (in the internal districts, in the Far East, in schools, at storage bases, etc.) a significant reserve of combat vehicles has accumulated - about 20% more than in the active army, and at the front there has been an almost threefold superiority in forces over Luftwaffe. The number of aircraft produced at that time significantly exceeded the number of trained pilots for them.
Taking into account the high characteristics of the Su-6, the OKB designed a high-altitude fighter. After dismantling the armor, part of the weapons and the defensive installation, according to calculations, the new aircraft should have excellent flight characteristics.
Serial production of the M-71F would make it possible to resolve the issue not only of launching the Su-6 attack aircraft into production, but also of producing the promising I-185 fighter. In this case, a situation would arise where both strike and fighter aircraft were simultaneously rearmed with equipment superior to that of the enemy in all defining parameters, which would have the most favorable effect on the overall course of the war. Meanwhile, the NKAP strongly resisted the production of the Su-6 and the M-71F engine, motivating its position by the great technical risk of launching their mass production in wartime conditions. However, I think that it was not only this. Having relied on quantity rather than quality, the leadership of the People's Commissariat was terrified of making any more or less serious changes to the already well-functioning system of combat aircraft production. In addition, by agreeing with the military’s proposal, he would actually have to admit the fallacy of the adopted technical policy of the NKAP, starting in 1940.
Due to the lack of suitable engines, variants of the Su-6 with M-82 and AM-42 engines were tested. With an air-cooled M-82 engine with a power of 1700 hp. The Su-6 showed higher performance in tests than the Il-2, but not as significant as with the M-71-F.
The installation of the AM-42 liquid engine on the attack aircraft by P.O. Sukhoi considered it a “step back,” which he repeatedly stated. Nevertheless, such an aircraft was built and tested. Due to unreliable operation of the propulsion system, the tests were delayed. By the time they were completed, the Il-10 attack aircraft with a similar engine was launched into mass production, and the relevance of this topic was lost.
Su-6 with AM-42 engine
The main reason for the refusal of mass production was the lack of production of the M-71 engine, for which it was originally developed. The Su-6 had excellent data for its time, and without a doubt, if put into service, it would quickly surpass the famous Il-2. This aircraft would remain effective in the first post-war decade. Unfortunately this did not happen.
As a “consolation prize” for the creation of the two-seat attack aircraft SU-6 M-71F, chief designer P.O. Sukhoi was awarded the 1st degree State Prize, which he donated to the Defense Fund. But the high reward only “sweeened the pill.”

Design and development [edit]
Development of the Su-6 began in 1939, when the Sukhoi Design Bureau began work on a single-seat armored attack aircraft. An order for two prototypes was placed on March 4, 1940, and on March 1, 1941, flight tests of the first prototype were started by test pilot A.I. Kokin. [1]
Flight tests showed that the Su-6 was superior to the Ilyushin Il-2 in almost all performance categories, however its engine exceeded its age limit before testing was completed, and no more Shvetsov M-71 engines were produced. [1]
The second prototype only flew in January 1942, as the OKB had to be evacuated after the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. [2] It was armed with two 23 mm cannons, four machine guns, and ten rocket launchers. The test results were very favorable and the AFRA Research Institute recommended purchasing a small production batch for testing in advanced conditions. A draft resolution was prepared for the production of 25 aircraft, but, unfortunately for Sukhoi, it was never formalized. [1]
Meanwhile, combat experience with single-seat Il-2s showed the need for a rear gunner. Thus, the third prototype was designed with a second crew member at the expense of the bomb load (reduced from 400 kg/881 lb to 200 kg/440 lb) and was powered by a more powerful M-71F engine. Official tests showed that the two-seat Su-6 had a top speed 100 km/h (54 kn, 62 mph) higher than the Il-2, although with a significantly smaller payload. [2] When the problematic M-71 was cancelled, Sukhoi was instructed to use the liquid-cooled Mikulin AM-42 engine. When flight testing began on 22 February 1944, the upgraded Su-6 performed worse than the Il-10 using the same engine, thanks to the additional 250 kg (551 lb) of armor required to protect the liquid-cooled engine and the lower power output of the AM- 42 compared to the M-71F. [2]
Although the Su-6 never entered production, in 1943 Pavel Sukhoi was awarded the Stalin Prize, First Class, for the development of the aircraft. [1]
Su-7 [edit]
As an experiment, the basic single-seat Su-6 design was developed into a mixed-power high-altitude interceptor called the Su-7
(the name was reused in the 1950s for a supersonic fighter-bomber). The armor was removed and the fuselage was of all metal construction. Power came from a Shvetsov ASh-82 FN piston engine with two TK-3 turbochargers in the nose and an RD-1 Glushko-KhZ rocket engine in the tail. The piston engine produced 1,380 kW (1,850 hp), while the rocket engine used kerosene and nitric acid as fuel and produced 2.9 kN (600 lbf) thrust for up to 4 minutes. [2] The armament consisted of three 20-mm ShVAK cannons with 370 rounds of ammunition. The only Su-7 was built in 1944. Test flights demonstrated a top speed of 510 km/h (275 kn, 315 mph) at 12,000 m (39,370 ft) without rocket propulsion and 705 km/h (380 kn, 440 mph). miles per hour) with a rocket. [2] In 1945, a rocket engine exploded during a flight test, killing the pilot and destroying the aircraft. [3]
