In 1951, the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) adopted the 7.62mm Type 51 pistol, which was an exact copy (except for markings) of the Soviet Tokarev TT pistol. Type 51 pistols were assembled partly from components supplied from the USSR, partly from locally produced components. By the mid-1950s, the Chinese industry had mastered the production of Tokarev pistols entirely on its own, and the new pistol was officially adopted by the PLA and the Chinese police under the designation “7.62mm Pistol Type 54.” It is still in service with the PLA and Chinese law enforcement forces, although since the beginning of the 21st century in China there has been a gradual replacement of old pistols with weapons of a new generation. Type 54 pistols were widely supplied to countries in Africa and Southeast Asia. In addition, on their basis, a whole family of “commercial” models was developed, intended for sale on the civilian and police weapons market in different countries of the world.

The simplest commercial option is the Type 54-1 pistol, supplied worldwide by NORINCO. This pistol has a caliber of 7.62mm and differs from the military one by the presence of a safety on the left side of the frame and markings. Based on the Type 54-1 pistol, a whole range of variants are also produced for the 9x19 Luger cartridge, exported under the symbols NORINCO / NORINCO M 201, M 213, NP-10, NP-17 and a number of others. One of the more original options in this family is the 9mm NORINCOM213A pistol, which has a redesigned frame with a wider grip that accommodates a double-stack magazine with a capacity of 14 rounds.

The design of the Type 54 pistol is completely identical to the Soviet Tokarev TT pistol of the 1933 model. It has an all-steel construction and automatic action with a short-stroke movable barrel. Locking and unlocking is carried out by skewing the breech of the barrel in a vertical plane, due to the swinging earring connecting the breech of the barrel and the frame of the weapon. The trigger mechanism is hammer-operated, single-action (non-self-cocking). In the basic military version there are no separate safety devices; the trigger has a safety cock. Commercial versions (Type 54-1 and its variations) have a manual safety located on the left side of the frame, in its rear part. The cartridges are fed from detachable box magazines with a capacity of 8 cartridges. Sights are fixed. Military Type 54 pistols have black plastic grips with a star in a circle, commercial versions can have a wide variety of grips and external finishes.

Type 54, Self-propelled artillery unit

122 mm self-propelled howitzer “Type 54-1”

The first example of the 122-mm self-propelled howitzer type 54, developed by the Chinese company NORINCO, was a standard armored personnel carrier YW 531 (ipi Type 531), armed with a 122-mm towed howitzer type 54. The gun with the trunks of the carriage dismantled was installed in the rear of the troop compartment. A later modification, type 54-1, is distinguished by an extended chassis, in which five road wheels are used instead of four. This machine is more stable when shooting. The body of the self-propelled gun is made by welding from sheets of rolled steel armor up to 12 mm thick and protects the crew from small arms fire and fragments of small-caliber shells and mines. A type 54-1 howitzer, which is a copy of the Russian M-30 howitzer, is mounted in the rear part of the hull. It has a short barrel without a muzzle brake, which does not protrude beyond the front clearance of the vehicle. Type 54-1 retains the protective shield, but is completely open on the sides, rear and top and does not provide the crew with any protection. If necessary, the howitzer and the fighting compartment are completely covered with a canvas cover. In the horizontal plane, the gun is aimed at the target in a sector of +22.5 degrees. relative to the longitudinal axis of the machine. In the vertical plane, aiming angles range from -2.5 degrees. up to +63 degrees. For firing from a gun, separately loaded shots with high-explosive, smoke and illumination warheads are used. The maximum firing range is 11,800 m. The vehicle's ammunition load includes 40 rounds. As an auxiliary weapon, a 7.62-mm machine gun type 67 (a copy of the Soviet RP-46) with 1000 rounds of ammunition is carried inside the self-propelled guns, which can be used to fire at enemy personnel and air targets.

In the engine and transmission compartment of the self-propelled howitzer, a six-cylinder in-line liquid-cooled diesel engine 6150L is installed, developing a power of 191 kW at 2000 rpm. When driving on paved roads, the self-propelled gun reaches a speed of 56 km/h and can travel up to 450 km without refueling.

The chassis for one side includes five rubber-coated road wheels, three support rollers, front drive wheels and rear idler wheels. The upper branches of the tracks and partially supporting rollers are covered with steel screens. Type 54-1 is equipped with an infrared night vision device, which is installed at the driver’s workplace for driving self-propelled guns in conditions of limited visibility. There is no protection system against weapons of mass destruction. Serial production of the 122-mm self-propelled howitzer type 54-1 has been discontinued. The self-propelled gun is in service only with the Chinese armies.

Options [edit]

Norinco, a state-owned People's Liberation Army weapons manufacturer in China, still produces a commercial variant of the Tokarev pistol chambered for the more common 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge, known as the Tokarev Model 213

, as well as the original 7.62 × 25 mm pistol. caliber. It has a safety, which was absent on Soviet-made TT-33 pistols. In addition, the 213 model has thin sliding grooves, unlike the original Russian wide types. The 9×19mm model features a magazine well assembly mounted at the rear of the well to accommodate 9×19mm magazines without modification to the frame.

The current production Norinco model is not available for sale in the United States due to the Chinese firearms import ban, although older Model 213-type pistols imported in the 1980s and 1990s are common.

M20

there was a version of the Type 54 made without factory markings to hide the origin of the weapon.
Many were provided to North Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War, also called K54s. An updated version, known as the K14-VN, is produced by Factory Z111 and has an increased capacity to 13 rounds, with a wider grip to accommodate a dual magazine, which is based on the Tokarev Model 213
. Research and development began in 2001. The K14-VN entered service with PAVN forces on 10 May 2014.

TU-90

(also known as
the NP-10
or
Model 213-B
) is an improved Model 213 similar to the Hungarian-designed and manufactured, Egyptian Contract Tokagypt 58 of the 1950s. The structure is primarily made from forged and machined steel with a blued matte finish. The grips are made of rubber with side ribs.

Newer variants have been developed such as the WQ213B54

,
213-A
and
NT04
, with double magazine.

The industry name for the conventional K54 and K14-VN is known as SN7M and SN7TD.

There are also Pakistani versions that use 7.62 mm caliber and have a burst fire mode or a fully automatic fire mode. [ citation needed

With the exception of Norinco, these PAs contain 8 cartridges and weigh 910g. Thus, the 203A can fire 14 rounds with an empty weight of 1000g.

Description[edit]

The Type 54 is an improved version of the Type 51 (a Chinese copy of the TT-33) produced after the Korean War. The Type 51 was first introduced into service in 1951 and was produced at Plant 66 in Shenyang using both Russian and Chinese-made parts. In 1954, after approximately 250,000 pistols had been produced, the designation was changed to Type 54 and the pistol used exclusively original components. This type of pistol is usually available in 7.62×25mm, although some variants have been made in the 9×19mm Parabellum version.

Although the QSZ-92 (Type 92) complemented the Type 54 in the military, the weapon is still in service with some Chinese military forces (such as the People's Armed Police and some People's Liberation Army troops).

Vietnamese used Type 54 during the Vietnam War, with the designation Sung Ngan K-54

[3] (Vietnamese translation from Chinese 54式手枪 (type 54 hand gun), with K for
Kie
being
the type
). Type 54 pistols were smuggled into Japan in significant numbers, often for use by the Yakuza.
