Review of the Umarex Walther P38 air pistol

A manufacturer from Germany first put the Umarex Walther P38 pistol on sale back in 2012. It is a visual imitation of the personal weapons of the German army officers of the same name during the Second World War. The Walther P38 firearm is considered a legendary pistol, which enjoyed deserved popularity not only in Germany, but also in the armies of other countries.

Experts immediately noted the high level of correspondence between the appearance of the copy and the combat original. Much has been said about the quality of workmanship, thoughtful design and reliability of the presented pneumatics. This is not just a beautiful imitation, but a real pistol that can be used for shooting practice.

History of the pistol

Like every pistol that later gained popularity, the Walter P38 did not just appear; before that there was a series of weapons that were not very successful in their design. Walther engineers and developers set a goal - to make a pistol that would be simpler and cheaper, unlike the Georg Luger P08 model. Technically, this task was not difficult, since the P08 pistol is complex and expensive to manufacture, but there was one caveat.

This is the performance characteristics of the Luger pistol; not all weapon models of that time could compete with them. However, even this did not become the main problem. The catch was that the military was attached to the P08 and in order to change their minds, it was necessary to create something better.

The result of the experiments was a pistol resembling a large and heavy copy of the Walter PP. Naturally, this weapon could not meet all the requirements and was not allowed into mass production.

Despite all efforts to improve the design to normal indicators in terms of reliability and weight reduction, this did not produce results.

While searching for a working automatic system, characterized by simplicity, Fritz Bartlemens proposed his own design, which later became the basis for the pistol, which today is known as the Walter P.38 model.

The idea was to improve the automatic system with a shortened barrel stroke, which was proposed by Browning. Based on this, they developed a pistol, which they proposed to adopt.

What kind of animal?

The self-loading Walther P38 is familiar to many due to its extensive use in the army of the Third Reich, and, accordingly, as the most valuable trophy of the Red Army soldiers. Entered service in 1939 and immediately supplanted the then popular Luger-Parabelllum.

Moreover, he took over it so well that he is still in service with Germany. It was also seen in the 2000s as a premium weapon in Ukraine and as a service weapon in Kazakhstan.

Design

The Umarex Walther P38 pneumatic has good power and accuracy, but it is not suitable for athletes, only for low-level competitions. But with this pistol you can have great fun outdoors when shooting at bottles. Connoisseurs of historical replicas will be able to confidently choose this model for their collection.

Umarex Walter P38 is as similar as possible to its combat counterpart. Both in appearance and in the performance of all mechanisms and components, there are no non-working elements among them. The barrel box stopper flag, the bolt delay, the safety lever are functioning, and the magazine release button is in the place where it should be - at the bottom of the handle. The handle has an eyelet for a carabiner with a strap. The cheeks on the handle are made of plastic, it imitates wood, they have grooved linings.

The replica pistol fires 4.5 mm copper-plated balls. The barrel is made of metal and has no rifling. The principle of operation is a CO2 gas cartridge, simulating the return of the bolt. A 12 g cylinder is installed, the clamping screw is located under the cheek of the handle. This compartment can be accessed from the left side. The overlay is removed by “tearing off” at the bottom.

All elements of the pistol are made of aluminum alloy. The outer coating is black paint, which imitates bluing. The standard sights are a rear sight and a front sight; they are not adjustable.

The release mechanism is single. The first manipulation is the usual jerking of the shutter. Subsequently, shots are fired by self-cocking. The trigger is on the outside, precisely positioned as in a combat pistol. Manual safety. Its lever is on the left side. We must not forget that in the “stop” mode it is in a lowered, not raised state.

The pistol magazine is released by pressing the latch, which is located at the bottom of the handle. The clip is charged with 20 copper-plated balls through the top of the round hole (first, the tongue of the pusher must be pressed down and snapped into place). Then remove the decorative cheek of the handle from the left side, catching it in the recess from below. A CO2 cylinder is placed in the compartment and secured with a screw. There is no need to tighten the clamping bolt too much, otherwise you can jam the bolt.

To fire the first shot, you must either pull the bolt or cock the hammer. Then the shooting is carried out by self-cocking until the cylinder or bullets in the magazine run out. When the last cartridge leaves the clip, the shutter is delayed. The bolt frame is released using a lever located on the left side, above the trigger guard.

When the safety is active (the lever points down), the trigger hook is completely jammed - the safety latch holds the trigger sear lever and does not allow the bolt to move. Do not apply force to the trigger and bolt without making sure that the safety is not set to the “Fire” position, otherwise you may break the trigger mechanism.

When the shutter is pulled, it catches the rammer, it slides freely along the bypass tube of the expansion chamber, and pulls it behind it. The bullet from the magazine is fed into the rammer hole. After the bolt returns to its original position, the rammer enters the plastic coupling on the barrel and connects to it. So, the cartridge is in the breech. The Walter mechanism allows you to pull the bolt one more time and place a second steel ammunition in the barrel.

Before shooting, the safety flag must be positioned all the way up. The trigger press is transmitted by a rod (located on the right side, under the lower part of the body) to the trigger sear rod, and this allows the latter to break away from the firing position. The trigger hits the firing pin, which passes through the blowback piston, and with a sharp short-term movement it presses the bypass valve. A certain volume of gas supplied from the cylinder affects both the bullet in the barrel and the blowback system.

Walter P38 equipment

Umarex Walter P38 is packaged in a beautiful cardboard package, with a model of the pistol and the torso of a German soldier drawn directly on it. In addition to the pistol with a magazine, the package contains an instruction manual, but it is not in Russian. However, this is compensated by the many large pictures, taking into account which everything is clear even without it.

Walther P38 disassembly

Complete disassembly of Walter is quite difficult. There is no special need for this. To clean or lubricate the gun, partial disassembly is sufficient.

It is done as follows:

  1. First you need to get a store.
  2. Next, the cylinder compartment opens and the cylinder itself is disconnected from the fittings.
  3. Afterwards, the bolt frame stopper flag, which is located near the trigger guard, is pressed, and the barrel is pulled out moving forward.
  4. With one hand, the bolt is pulled back, closing the imitation hole for ejecting the cartridge, so the return spring will not fly away.
  5. The shutter frame is removed.

If complete disassembly is required, then it is necessary to continue the work; it begins by unscrewing the large bolt on the right side on the cheek of the handle.

Then you need to do the following work:

  1. Place the gun with the right side facing up.
  2. Remove 6 bolts - 2 on top of the bolt guide, 1 near the trigger guard, 1 on top of the handle and 2 on the bottom.
  3. Remove the flat spring that secures the trigger rod.
  4. Set aside the right side of the gun body.
  5. Disassemble the release mechanism.
  6. Take out the gas mechanism.
  7. Unscrew the 2 bolts on the bolt, securing the blowback piston, and remove it.

Incomplete disassembly

Of course, a pistol at such a price must please its owner not only with brave shooting, but also with pleasant additions such as incomplete disassembly. The order here is:

  1. We take out the magazine by sliding the plug.
  2. Turn the barrel lock and pull the barrel out of the body.
  3. The shutter is removed. During this operation, all owners notice a fragile return spring flying away in an unknown direction, so we work more carefully. During the reverse operation, everything becomes even more hemorrhoidal, so it’s better not to touch it again.
