Walther CP99 Compact Air Pistol - Owner's Review

Impression of use

The pistol is small in size, but at the same time quite weighty and sits nicely in the hand, giving the impression of a real weapon. This is especially pleasant to feel when shooting, the recoil makes it more realistic, but at the same time, like all blow-backs, it consumes more gas. Taking the Walther CP99 Compact air pistol into your hands, you can immediately see the German build quality, all the parts are made with high quality and fit together, nothing plays or rattles inside.

Appearance

The pistol was developed as a combat analogue of the P99 compact, but still underwent changes that distinguish it from a combat pistol. Fortunately, there are only two of them, this is a forced extension of the pistol grip for a 12 gram cylinder, as well as its own safety located to the right of the bolt frame, but I must say that it was made with high quality and competently, it eliminates accidental cocking of the pistol, and if you give it to a person without explaining how to do this, he will definitely not immediately understand how to cock the pistol.

Fuse

You can also add a big plus to this pistol when equipped with a cylinder; the mechanism is very simple and convenient. You can insert the cylinder into the pistol grip and fix it there, but do not impale it, but do it before the fight. In addition, the manufacturer is proud of the gas supply system and assures that it can be stored for about a day with the cylinder impaled and nothing will happen to it.

Carl Walther Sportwaffen GmbH began developing the P99 pistol in 1994. The main goal was to create a modern pistol for police and self-defense, capable of achieving greater commercial success than its predecessor, the Walter P88, which, despite its excellent characteristics, turned out to be too expensive. The creation of P99 was completed by 1996, and the result was quite successful. It has excellent ergonomics, is quite reliable, and is available in several versions, differing in the operating features of the trigger. Since 1999, all versions of the P99 series pistols have also been produced in .40SW caliber. In 2004, the Walther P99 family of pistols underwent some changes - the shape of the trigger guard and the location of the notches on the bolt were slightly changed, and the model markings also changed, in particular the P990 variant was renamed P99 DAO. In addition, compact variants with a shortened barrel and handle have been added to the lineup.

The Walther P99 pistol is built using recoil energy with a short barrel stroke. Locking is carried out according to a modified Browning scheme, where the barrel is lowered, interacting with a figured cutout under the breech with a fixed pin in the frame. The bolt is engaged through a window for ejecting cartridges. The trigger mechanism is striker-fired, double-action, with a device for safely releasing the firing pin from the combat cocking. A modification P99QA (Quick Action) is also available, in which the firing pin is always partially cocked and is re-cocked with each pull of the trigger (somewhat similar to Glock pistols). This scheme ensures a constant trigger pull for all shots. The P990 / P99 DAO modification has only a double-action trigger, where the mainspring for each shot is cocked only by the shooter’s muscular strength. The trigger force of the P99 pistol when firing with a pre-cocked striker is about 2.5 kgf, when firing with a self-cocking gun - about 4 - 4.5 kgf, for the P99QA - about 3.8 kgf with a smaller working stroke of the trigger than the P990. The pistol does not have external non-automatic safeties; instead, the P99 has a button for safely decocking the firing pin, which is located at the top rear of the bolt. The P99 QA pistol has a much smaller button, since it is designed to completely unload the mainspring only when disassembling the weapon. The P99 DAO does not have a shutter button at all. In addition, there are three automatic safeties - blocking the striker when the trigger is not pulled, blocking the striker when the bolt is not closed, and an automatic safety on the trigger. Additionally, there is an indicator of the presence of a cartridge in the chamber, the role of which is played by the external ejector, and an indicator for cocking the firing pin (when cocking, the shank of the firing pin protrudes a few millimeters from the rear end of the bolt). The pistol frame is made of polymer materials and has a black or dark green (in the “military” version) color. A characteristic feature of the P99 is that the rear part of the grip is removable, and the pistol comes with 3 interchangeable rear parts of different sizes to fit the hand of each individual shooter. On the front part of the frame under the barrel there are guides for attaching a laser designator or flashlight. The pistol, upon request from the relevant organizations, can also be equipped with a special elongated barrel with a thread in the muzzle, allowing the installation of a proprietary silencer.

Fastenings

The front of the Umarex Walther cp99 compact air pistol has mounts for a laser target or tactical flashlight. It is advisable to buy these devices specifically for this model, since the bar is very short and it is unlikely to be possible to install anything else. The laser target designator for the CP99 compact, by the way, is very well made and even has light indicators for the arrow in the area of the trigger guard, which notify you about the operation of the laser, which is very useful if you do not want to unmask your position.

My take on the Umarex Walther CP99 air pistol

I recently wrote an article about choosing an air pistol for bullet shooting. He remained true to his principles, paid the money, and became the happy owner of a Umarex Walther CP99. I did a lot of testing and a small summer photo shoot at the dacha, and I bring to your attention my vision of this pistol.

There is no point in writing about the device and technical characteristics; I’ll tell you about the sensations and impressions.

What I liked about the Umarex Walther CP99

The pistol was made in Germany. Maybe, of course, they are lying, but on the receiver, documentation, packaging, etc. There are inscriptions made in germany. Hence the quality of fit of parts, comfort, balance, and the overall mood of the weapon. As the highest rating - my wife liked the gun. Probably the first pistol that passed through my hands. And believe me, there were a lot of pistols

I already wrote about an imitation of a store containing a bottle with a dispenser. Everything works great, you can arrange different exercises for yourself with an approach to an unloaded weapon, loading it - very realistic and impressive. I also really liked the action of the bolt for pre-cocking the hammer and the button for opening the front of the bolt to access the drum. He tilted the pistol slightly, pressed the button down, with a pleasant mechanical click, the bolt and barrel moved forward, and the magazine fell into your hand. The main thing is to have time to catch it and not drop it in the sand. Convenient, beautiful, impressive - this is a huge plus for Umarex engineers.

Accuracy. The pistol has great potential, which exceeds the needs of an amateur shooter with a margin. You can aim at targets with a pre-cocked hammer, or you can hit several targets in tempo shooting mode. Even with an interval of less than one second between shots at a distance of 10 meters, I did not notice a critical drop in power.

Here is the result of shooting from 10 meters. There was no Olympic target, shooting was carried out using improvised materials. Bullets - Crosman Premier 0.68 grams. They fly well, but are a little heavy for tempo shooting. Why, see below:

If you don’t look at one gap on the top group, the accuracy is about 4 cm. The group is even, the bullets fall neatly.

But the shooting is already at 20 meters:

In terms of width, the accuracy remains approximately at the same level, but the vertical stretch openly hints at a drop in power. All bullets travel smoothly, the edges of hits are neat, but the short interval between shots does not allow achieving the same speed, which is already critical for this pistol at 20 meters.

Another positive aspect of the pistol would be the presence of a decocking button. You can cock the hammer using the bolt, but the bullet is not sent into the barrel. Have you decided to cancel the shot? We press the button on top, the trigger is removed from the cocking position. The bullet does not remain in the breech and the gun can be safely unloaded and stowed away. This feature is not often used, but is very convenient. Still, we are not dealing with military weapons, no one is stopping us from shooting into the air and unloading the pistol, but if we approach the issue according to all the rules, the presence of such a button makes handling much more convenient.

What I didn't like about the Umarex Walther CP99

The main disadvantage is that the pistol arrived completely unshot. The rear sight is adjusted with two screws on the inside of the bolt frame; the screws are very flimsy; to adjust it to the center, I had to move the rear sight to the right by almost 1 mm.

At the same time, I can’t say that the rear sight is aligned perfectly, but the screws urgently require replacement. They definitely won’t withstand the second such adjustment. As you can see from the targets, all hits are below the aiming point. You can, of course, try lighter bullets, but I doubt it. There are no replacement front sights included, so you will have to saw the front sight... A very unpleasant job. Not only does the appearance deteriorate, but the process is also boring: I sawed it a little, shot it; sawed it, shot it... For a pistol that is positioned by the manufacturer as a target pistol, this is an unacceptable disadvantage.

The second obvious failure is a fuse. Most likely not even its functionality, but its appearance. The safety works perfectly, it does not block the trigger, which allows you to fully practice with the pistol, but the quality of the materials is not very good. It is made of soft black plastic, its texture and color do not match the body. It's like they stuck some foreign thing to the gun. The forward-backward switching mechanism is not very informative and it is difficult to determine by touch what position the fuse is in. The plastic is quite slippery and it is not always possible to remove the pistol from the safety with one finger without changing the grip. In a word, the mechanism is unsuccessful, we have seen better.

The last nitpick is the loose magazine fit.

I can’t speak for all the pistols in the line, but on my copy the loaded magazine looks like this. There remains a gap of approximately 1 mm. thick. I can’t say that this somehow affects shooting, but it’s unpleasant.

Overall, despite its shortcomings, the pistol is very successful. Good performance when shooting with medium-heavy bullets at a distance of 10 meters, the pistol fits well in the hand, everything clicks and opens smoothly and accurately. I'm happy with the purchase, I recommend it.

Owner reviews

Impressions from P99 owners: “I’ve had this gun for 7 years, it’s an old model, but I’m 100% happy with it! I passed several thousand rounds through it, but there were basically no signs of wear, there were never any misfires.” “On my P99 QA, the trigger works like on a Glock, only better and softer, and the trigger stroke is shorter.” “The quality of the plastic is high. The handle insert sits firmly. The shutter coating is of high quality and has not been scratched. Accurate, convenient, beautiful, lightweight, comfortable, reliable and safe. Excellent soft trigger and moderate recoil. Some owners of the old version of the P99 had the firing pin break, but now there are no such complaints. 3000 rounds of Wolf, Federal, Blazer, Winchester cartridges without a single delay.” “The ergonomics of the pistol are excellent, the angle of the handle is natural for the hand. The magazine ejection lever is double-sided, on the trigger guard, and easily ejects an empty magazine by pressing the middle finger. Metal magazines. The button for safely decocking the firing pin is a very nice thing. Nothing catches on clothes. The trigger is soft and uniform, the force is 2 kg, the trigger travel for the first shot is 14 mm, subsequent shots are 7 mm (for Glock each is 12 mm). Sights are an excellent size, the front sight is of normal thickness, the rear sight is adjustable horizontally with a screw. Shooting behavior: the recoil is soft, softer than Glock’s, the bolt bounce does not exceed CZ 75 and Glock 17.”
