Sabaton - Ghost Division (German 7th Armored Division) lyrics

7th Panzer Division

Place of permanent deployment: Gera (IX Military District).

The division was formed in Gera in 1938 as the 2nd Light Division and was staffed by natives of Thuringia, which was never famous for the fighting qualities of its soldiers. Nevertheless, the 7th Panzer Division performed admirably in battle. Nicknamed the "ghost division", it initially consisted of the 66th Tank Battalion and the 6th and 7th Mechanized Cavalry Regiments, as well as the 7th Reconnaissance Regiment (two battalions), the 78th Artillery Regiment (two divisions), 58th engineer battalion and 42nd anti-tank division.

As with most pre-war German divisions, units of the 2nd Light Division were not based in one place, but were scattered across various locations. The division headquarters, I Battalion, 7th Mechanized Cavalry Regiment, and the anti-tank battalion were located in Gera, the I Battalion, 6th Mechanized Cavalry Regiment, was quartered in Rudolstadt, and the II Battalion, 7th Mechanized Cavalry Regiment, and an artillery regiment were located in Jena. The barracks of the 58th Engineer Battalion were located in Riesa, while the I (Motorcycle) Battalion of the 7th Reconnaissance Regiment was based in Kissengen, and the II (Armored Car) Battalion of the same regiment was based in Meiningen. The communications company's base was located in Erfurt (the division received a full-fledged communications battalion only at the end of October 1939, after the end of the fighting in Poland). In addition, the division was assigned a light anti-aircraft artillery battery from the Luftwaffe.

When the war began, the tank battalion of the 2nd Light Division was armed only with light tanks Pz-I and Pz-II (the latter were armed only with a 20-mm cannon, while the former had no cannon at all - only machine guns). However, the remaining parts of the division were better armed. As part of the 10th Army - the main striking force of the German forces - on September 1-3, 1939, the division broke through the Polish defenses on the border, helped occupy the Wart region and continued the offensive on the outskirts of Warsaw, but was recalled to repel the only serious attack by Polish troops during the entire campaign . The 2nd Light Division fought near Radom (September 8–12), where the main forces of the Polish army were surrounded and defeated. The division then continued to move north, and then turned east again to take part in the attack towards the Vistula and in the siege of Warsaw. Warsaw capitulated on September 27. The division remained in Poland until October 1, and then was recalled to the Reich for reorganization and re-equipment of the tank division.

The 7th Panzer Division was officially formed from the 2nd Light Division at Gera on 18 October 1939. By November 1, the division received the newly formed headquarters of the 25th Tank Regiment along with the 1st and 2nd battalions. The 66th tank battalion joined the regiment, becoming its III battalion. At the same time, the headquarters of the 7th Reconnaissance Regiment was disbanded, its I Battalion became the 7th Motorcycle Regiment, and its II Battalion became the 7th Reconnaissance Regiment. The 6th and 7th Mechanized Cavalry Regiments were redesignated as motorized in March 1940. Both regiments were subordinate to the newly formed headquarters of the 7th Motorized Brigade.

Despite some improvements, the 7th Panzer Division was still poorly equipped with tanks in 1940. On April 12, 1940, it had only three tank battalions instead of the standard four. Moreover, the 25th Tank Regiment did not have a single Pz-III, the best German tank until 1943. It had 72 obsolete Pz-IIs, 37 practically useless Pz-Is and 23 Pz-IVs armed with short-barreled 75 mm cannons, which significantly limited their effectiveness. The division's main battle tank was the Pz-38(t), a tank produced in Czechoslovakia before its occupation by Hitler in 1938. The division also received a new commander. He became Major General Erwin Rommel, who soon became famous as the “Desert Fox”.

During the invasion of France and Belgium, the 7th Panzer Division was in the thick of the fighting and suffered the heaviest losses of any German division in the West in 1940, suffering 2,610 casualties (682 killed, 1,643 wounded, and 285 captured or missing). She also lost 42 tanks, of which 16 were German-made. However, the division proved itself better than any other German division in this campaign. She successfully crossed the Meuse, fought her way through Belgium and France, defeating and destroying the French 1st Panzer Division, capturing more than 10 thousand prisoners and destroying more than 100 French tanks, 30 armored vehicles and 27 field guns in 48 hours at the cost of the loss of 35 people killed and 59 wounded. Together with the SS motorized division "Totenkopf", it took part in repelling a major Allied counterattack at Arras, defeated the French 31st motorized division, cut off the retreat of large forces of the French and British armies at Cherbourg and captured another 30 thousand prisoners, including five admirals. In total, the “ghost division” captured 97,468 prisoners, shot down 52 aircraft, destroyed another 15 on the ground, and took another 12 as trophies. She captured the commander of the French Atlantic Fleet, most of the 51st Scottish Division (including its commander) and about 20 other generals. The division captured or destroyed 277 field guns, 64 anti-tank guns, 458 tanks and armored vehicles, 4-5 thousand trucks, 1.5-2 thousand cars, more than 300 buses and many other equipment.

Until February 1941, the 7th Panzer Division performed occupation functions in the Bordeaux region, and then, along with many units of the German army, was transferred to East Prussia. The division entered the Soviet Union in June and fought with encircled troops near Minsk, on the “Stalin Line”, on crossings of the Western Dvina, near Smolensk, on crossings across the Dnieper, near Vitebsk, Vyazma, Klin and Moscow. By October 13, the 78th Tank Artillery Regiment alone reported the destruction of 263 Soviet tanks, 124 field guns, 69 anti-tank guns, 760 trucks, 48 pillboxes, 4 aircraft, 5 ammunition depots, 6 locomotives and an armored train. However, the division's losses were also high. By November 15, the division had suffered 290 killed, 783 wounded, and 45 captured or missing—a total of 1,118 men. Then came the winter of 1941/42, and with it the offensive of Soviet troops. By January 23, only 5 officers, 25 non-commissioned officers and 161 privates remained in service in the 1st Battalion of the 6th Motorized Regiment. The II Battalion of the same regiment had only 17 officers, 72 non-commissioned officers and 328 privates, while the II Battalion of the 7th Motorized Regiment was reduced to 7 officers, 54 non-commissioned officers and 293 privates. The strength of each battalion was about 700 people. At some point, only five combat-ready tanks remained in the 25th Tank Regiment: four Pz-38(t) and 1 Pz-IV, and the bulk of the personnel was thrown into battle in the form of a combined infantry unit. Many tanks failed due to a lack of spare parts - the German supply system was practically paralyzed. Having been drawn (along with the rest of the 9th Army) into the merciless fighting on the Rzhev salient, the 2nd Battalion of the 6th Motorized Regiment suffered such losses that it had to be disbanded, as well as one of the tank battalions. Only four companies remained in the 25th Tank Regiment, and the remnants of the 37th Reconnaissance Battalion joined the 7th Motorcycle Battalion. Between June 22, 1941, and January 23, 1942, the 7th Panzer Division suffered 2,055 killed, 5,737 wounded, 313 missing or captured, and 1,089 sick (mostly with frostbite or lice-borne diseases). The total losses were 9,203 people, including 336 officers (at the beginning of the campaign, the division consisted of about 400 officers and 14,000 lower ranks). On May 27, only 8,589 officers and lower ranks remained in the division, most of whom arrived in the division after the start of the campaign.

Due to high losses, in May 1942 the division was withdrawn to Southern France for rest and replenishment. Here it finally received modern German-made tanks, including 35 Pz-IIIJ and 30 Pz-IVG. At the same time, the headquarters of the 7th Motorized Brigade was disbanded. In November of the same year, the division took part in the occupation of Vichy France, reaching Marseille and Toulon. After the encirclement of German troops at Stalingrad, the 7th Panzer Division was transferred to the southern sector of the Eastern Front, where at the beginning of 1943 it had to repel a powerful attack by Soviet troops in the direction of Rostov-on-Don. The division began this campaign with 95 tanks, of which 20 were completely outdated models. During the period from January 7 to February 27, 1943, the division destroyed or captured 354 Soviet tanks, 124 guns, 276 anti-tank guns, 70 mortars, 414 trucks and other equipment. The division's losses amounted to 12 tanks.

Later, the division fought during the retreat for the Don and Donets, near Izyum and near Kharkov. The division suffered particularly heavy losses during Operation Citadel, Hitler's last offensive on the Eastern Front. By the end of the battle, 15 tanks remained in service, and there were enough personnel for no more than three battalions. After Kursk, the 7th Panzer Division became a battle group. Nevertheless, she fought well at Belgorod, Kiev and Zhitomir, twice receiving gratitude from the command. The losses of German troops were great. For example, the 1st Battalion of the 7th Motorized Regiment lost 2,144 people during the period from January 1 to October 31, 1943, which is more than three times its original strength.

In November, the division suffered huge losses while retreating from Kyiv and fought in the Tarnopol (Ternopol) area until March 1944, when it was defeated and the 1st Tank Army was surrounded. The remnants of the division escaped, but not a single one of its “tigers” survived this battle. On April 21, 1944, the once mighty 7th Panzer Division consisted of 1,872 combat-ready soldiers and officers, 9 guns, 11 anti-tank guns and nine tanks (of which one was a captured T-34). “Shrunken” to the size of a battle group (the German term for badly battered divisions roughly equal in combat power to a regiment), the 7th Panzer continued to fight and resisted the Soviet summer offensive of 1944, fighting at Minsk and Lida. Having avoided disaster, in August 1944 the division again received gratitude from the command for its actions in the battles near Raseiniai in Lithuania. Part of the 7th Panzer Division was cut off on 10 October at Memel (Klaipeda), but was evacuated by sea to Pilau on 22 October. Reassembling at the Aris training ground in East Prussia, the 7th Panzer Division took part in the Battle of Elbig and then fought hard during the 1944/45 Soviet winter offensive on the Vistula. At the beginning of 1945, the “ghost division” fell into a trap and was pressed to the sea in the area of Danzig (Gdansk) and Gotenhafen (Gdynia). Despite the fact that the fleet managed to evacuate it by sea to Swinemünde, all equipment and tanks had to be abandoned. Nevertheless, in April 1945, the 7th Panzer Division took part in the battle for Berlin. Most of the division's personnel managed to reach Allied positions and surrendered to British troops near Schwerin on May 3.

The division was part of the following formations:

  • Ghost Division (German 7th Armored Division)

Fast as the wind The Invasion has begun Shaking the ground With a force of 1000 guns

First in the line of fire First into hostile land Tanks leading the way Leading the way

Charging the lines with a force of a furious storm Fast as the lightning phantom's swarm 200 miles at nightfall taken within a day Thus earning their name, earning their fame

They are the Panzer Elite Born to compete Never retreat (Ghost Division) Living or dead Always ahead Fed by your dread

Always ahead as the Blitzkrieg rages on Breaking morale with the sound of blazing guns

First in the line of fire First into hostile land Tanks leading the way Leading the way

Leaving a trail of destruction through a foreign land (Waging war with conviction) Massive assault to serve the Nazi plan (Wehrmacht's pride ghost division) Communication's broken Panzers are far away Thus earning their name, earning their fame

They are the Panzer Elite Bound to compete Never retreat (Ghost Division) Living or dead Always ahead Fed by your dread

Pushing the frontline forth with a tremendous force (far ahead, breaks resistance) Crushing the way for Panzer Corps (shows no fear, self-subsistence) First in the line of fire First into hostile land Tanks leading the way Claiming the fame

They are the Panzer Elite Bound to compete Never retreat (Ghost Division) Living or dead Always ahead Fed by your dread

Panzer Elite Bound to compete Never retreat (Ghost Division) Living or dead Always ahead Fed by your dread
