The car is extraordinary and simply had to appear on the eve of the Year of the Tiger. The story about it can be started in different ways, and every introduction will be about an impressive one. Let's say, the sound of a diesel engine is exactly the well-fed animal rumbling of a living mustachioed and striped animal. The mass of the “Tiger” is amazing - 6 tons. The Ussuri owner of the taiga is also a heavyweight in comparison with other animals. Another option is to tell us about the price: none of the currently mass-produced Russian cars cost 3.5 million rubles in the basic configuration - an orange “seal” costs almost the same amount. Most often, those who saw this product of the Arzamas Machine-Building Plant used a verb that, translated into literary language, sounds like “stunned!” And those who have traveled by car pronounce this word even with aspiration.
TIGER-233001
Felines have long been associated with the world of motors: cars, planes, helicopters, submarines and even tanks were named after these strong beauties. When in Arzamas, the homeland of Russian armored personnel carriers, they decided to build an army all-terrain vehicle, it was also named after the most dangerous predator cat in nature. For the similarity of characters: the car storms half-meter ditches, vertical walls up to 40 cm high and crawls up slopes up to 20 degrees. The speed over rough terrain is up to 80 km/h, the maximum speed is 140 km/h (factory testers claim that it goes even faster). The “Tiger” does not suffer from hydrophobia and is ready to jump into the river - the snorkel, like a tail like a pipe, sticks out above the right pillar and seems to be waving its tip two meters from the ground (you should not dive into the depths - the body is leaky). The most powerful spar frame, wheels, levers, torsion bar suspension, wheel gearboxes - all this from the BTR-80 and other army equipment. It turned out so great that they decided to release the beast into people - to create a civilian version. You won’t have to fight in this one, because it has an unarmored five-door body and there are no mounts for machine guns, a grenade launcher or a radio station. Otherwise, he’s still the same warrior. The car we drove is the top version, priced at 5.5 million rubles. Know ours!
Civil version: why and for whom
The civilian version of the vehicle was created in 2009 on the basis of the basic army version using all the technologies intended for military equipment. It is specially designed for those consumers who need a reliable off-road vehicle for transporting people and various goods over difficult terrain. The car differs from the prototype in its unarmored aluminum body, improved interior trim and greater load capacity. Due to the combination of cross-country ability, comfort and reasonable cost, the Tiger is popular not only among top-level oil managers; it is often purchased by hunters, fishermen and tourists.

It's hard to imagine that a 6-ton colossus accelerates to 140 km/h!
It's hard to imagine that a 6-ton colossus accelerates to 140 km/h!
If I were the Tiger dealer, I would sell the car only after a mandatory short course for owners - so that they would not be tempted to rush the car to where “the infantry will not pass and the armored train will not rush through.” The technology provokes: for dense off-road conditions - two winches with a force of 4000 kgf, each with 20 m of cable (in the basic version there is one winch). Centralized tire inflation and a purely military tread pattern. The expedition trunk is topped with a scattering of headlights and even a finder headlight. And tiger coloring... You understand, it’s impossible to stare at all this for a long time and do nothing - get behind the wheel as soon as possible!

NIMR II 4×4 Lebanese Army made in the UAE, analogue of the Russian GAZ-2330 “Tiger”
Nimr car
After the refusal of the Arab company BJG to continue work on the project with the Russian company PKT, each of the parties was left with a package of technical documentation; in addition, three prototypes of armored vehicles remained in Abu Dhabi, which were tested in desert conditions after being exhibited at IDEX-2001.
Soon in Jordan in Al Dulaila, by order of the General Staff of the UAE, the companies BJG and KADDB created a joint venture Advanced Industries of Arabia (AIA, 80% of shares from BJG), at the plant of which, starting in June 2005, within 18 months they assembled 500 Nimr armored vehicles in four different versions, including a 6 × 6 wheel arrangement with a load capacity of 5 tons. Compared to the prototypes, the new machines are equipped with an MTU 6R 106 engine with a power of 325 hp. s., Allison LCT 1000 transmission and differ in armored body geometry and conventional spring wheel suspension. The base version Nimr cars were first demonstrated in 2005 at IDEX 2005, where BJG announced the signing of an agreement with the Indian Vectra Group to create a joint production of Nimr cars in India. But till now, no production of Nimr cars has started in India.
In 2007, at the IDEX-2007 exhibition, AIA demonstrated the Nimr II family of machines, developed on its own initiative, which is a further development of the basic version of the Nimr machine. Among the improvements were stated: all-round ballistic protection brought to level 3 B6 of the STANAG 4569 standard; basic mine protection against mine explosions weighing up to 6 kg; increased from 320 to 350 l. With. engine power; lifting capacity increased to 2.5 tons. Apart from the wheels, engine and gearbox, all components of the Nimr platform, including the driveline, chassis and armor, were designed and manufactured by BJG.

To the right of the two tire pressure indicators is a button (!) to start the American diesel Cummins with a power of 205 hp. They promise to start installing the YaMZ-534 diesel “four” in January - it is both cheaper and more powerful by 68 horsepower. (All engines have a useful feature - autonomous heating.) I adjust the seat to suit me, take a quick look in the mirrors, at the instruments - and press “start”. The engine roared, the five-meter-long “tiger” shuddered, came to life - let’s go. You can’t imagine what’s going on in the souls of grown-ups who get behind the wheel of this “animal” for the first time! I wanted to yell: “Vasya, cover me - I’m attacking!”, sing about the Eaglet, who will fly higher than the sun, and I had difficulty suppressing the desire to immediately rush to storm Berlin... No, I’m not going there - I’m going on our “Tiger” to his namesake from Germany, which froze forever on the 42nd kilometer of the Volokolamsk highway. Next year is not only the year of the Tiger, but also the year of the 65th anniversary of the Victory. Our grandfathers were able to tame uninvited animals.
Driving the car is no more difficult than any other, I quickly got used to its considerable width. And in general, it's quite cozy.

The car has its own face: if you look closely, a hidden tiger is looking at you through the camouflage!
You feel protected. Of course, the torsion bar suspension can only be damaged by an anti-tank grenade. But I didn’t like the modern small steering wheel - it falls out of the general style (in the basic version the steering wheel is from the Sobol). The hydraulic booster is also not very powerful, it seems to say: guys, this is not a sports car for you. I understood what a ground clearance of 40 cm is: what kind of curbs are there - you can’t feel them! To break through such an energy-intensive suspension, you have to try hard. And not here, not on the asphalt.
On the highway, everyone gave way to me, including those driving very expensive foreign cars. And even the PPS crew. The guys in uniform looked at me and the “Tiger” - and the hands of the servicemen involuntarily reached for their service weapons. Calm down, this is a peaceful armored train!.. Eh, I wish I could drive the “Tiger” into the forest, into the impassable wilderness, and along gullies, through bushes, with a bumper to cut down dead wood... You can’t: this is the first and so far the only civilian “Tiger”, it will have an exhibition “Interpolitex” ", so there shouldn't be a scratch on the body. The manufacturers promised to organize a real, cool test drive a little later - then I’ll tell you about the off-road qualities of the Arzamas beast in the wild. For now, just a few of the features.
Car price
For cars of its class, the Tiger is widely available for sale, and you can buy both a used and a new car. The cost of the new GAZ-2330 ranges from 6–9 million rubles - such a range of prices depends solely on the configuration, which is separately negotiated each time when ordering.
The specific circle of owners of the civilian “Tiger” is determined by a large number of tuning studios that customize the car to the individual requirements of the customer. Refinement of a machine by the hands of such specialists can double its factory cost.
Now only a few hundred people own the brand new Tiger - this is determined by its narrow scope of application and high price. Nevertheless, used cars at a price of 3.5–5 million rubles are always available for purchase on the secondary market.
Video about the results of the work of one of the tuning studios
We can confidently state that Russian engineers managed to solve the problem of adapting military equipment to civilian conditions. The GAZ-2330 SUV is an example of products of the domestic automobile industry, made at the most modern level. The Tiger's military background allows it to be used effectively in difficult conditions and to feel confident when driving in the city. It’s a pity that only a select consumer will be able to fully appreciate these advantages, because people with average incomes simply cannot afford such a purchase.

If you decide to buy an “armored train” with a manual transmission, learn: the position of the lever in first gear is where everyone else has second, and the rear is where everyone else has first. A similar scheme was used on UAZ cars: it is easier to use a lever to rock the car if you get stuck up to your ears. From the Ulyanovsk all-terrain vehicle on the “Tiger” and the principle of the location of fuel tanks. Another detail: each wiper blade has its own electric motor. The wipers work asynchronously, but, oddly enough, this is more pleasant than annoying... The rear view camera let us down in the test - periodically correct the flaw - it is not constructive. When the camera went blind, I honked my horn while backing up, so as not to inadvertently catch anyone (after all, the dimensions are huge and unusual). The sound is like the whistle of a shunting diesel locomotive...

Real fuel consumption is 20 liters of diesel fuel per hundred kilometers, if you don’t pedal too hard.
As an option, the plant offers an automatic transmission, ABS and everything you want - the list is limited only by your imagination. Including the choice of body paint color, including metallics. But the dealer assures that no one is asking for them - only military camouflage!
Advantages and disadvantages
The value of the vehicle lies in the fact that it perfectly performs its functions in the conditions for which it was originally created - the “Tiger” moves confidently and easily transports cargo off-road. In fact, this jeep can only stop when it sits on its belly or gets stuck on half its body. The car's interior is decorated using natural materials and has a high-quality stereo system with six speakers. Comfortable seating for the driver and passenger is ensured by adjustable seats, which are heated, as well as armrests on all seats.
"Tiger" behaves confidently off-road
Among the few disadvantages, we note the insufficient controllability of the car when driving at high speeds on a knurled track. However, it is simply difficult to expect anything else from a car weighing 6.5 tons, even if it is equipped with a standard hydraulic booster. Demanding consumers pay attention to the somewhat primitive interior of the Tiger, as well as the insufficient quality of the seams and rivets used. Many people note excessive noise levels when driving, which is determined by the location of the gearbox in the cabin.

What are the prospects of buying a car? The manufacturer's capacity is 400 units per year; currently there are 35 bodies at the plant. The dealer selling the car is the Military Industrial Company, and only that.
The buyer's deterrent factor is that to drive a car you need a category C driver's license. However, opening it to tame the “Tiger” is such a trifle that it goes without saying. Another thing is where to get so much money? Even without these thoughts, I parted with the car almost crying.
We thank the Lenino-Snegirevsky Military History Museum for their help in preparing the material.
