Wheeled-tracked “aggressor tank”: non-Soviet history

Development of armored vehicles in the post-war years

After graduation, the production of the popular “Panarov” series was resumed. The new turret was intended to accommodate the 47 mm barrel of the SA-35 - the previous 25 mm gun was obsolete. In the early 1950s, several dozen Panhard 178B armored vehicles took part in battles in Vietnam. Armored vehicles were engaged in escorting columns and convoys until the major defeat of France in the Valley of Clay Pots (Dien Bien Phu) in 1954.

France fought hard to maintain its metropolitan status and used AMD models to suppress guerrilla movements in the colonies of North and Northwest Africa. "Panhards" were used until 1964.

Wheeled vehicles: player assessment

From the developers:

Tankers! Thank you for your help in running in wheeled vehicles. Thanks to everyone who promptly responded to our call and shared their feedback about the “wheelies”. We will continue to be open to a wide range of opinions from the community.

The feedback we have received from you is quite varied and there is a lot of it. To fully process and analyze all feedback, we will need time. We will continue to work on wheeled vehicles, and you will still have the opportunity to play on “wheeled vehicles” during the general test.

And now we are sharing the participants’ opinions on the most important issues regarding the new technology.

M3 Lee

This American medium tank was named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee, the best commander of the American Civil War. The tank was developed in 1940 under extreme time constraints. Great Britain had already entered the war with Germany, and did not have a serial medium tank, except for the extremely unsuccessful M2. It is haste that causes some decisions that seem strange. For example, the decision to place the main 75mm gun not in the turret, but in a semicircular bulge of the hull. The small commander's cupola was simply not capable of carrying it, and there was no time to radically alter the design. An additional light cannon was installed in the tower. The first tests revealed a whole range of shortcomings. Firstly, the fighting compartment was extremely polluted - the crew was practically suffocating. Secondly, the “convenient” rectangular doors on the sides, through which the crew climbed inside, turned out to be too vulnerable to shells. Finally, criticism was caused by the weak suspension, poor placement of the guns and poor aiming. However, the MZ was in service until the end of 1942 (until it was replaced by the famous Sherman). The shortcomings were gradually eliminated (for example, a fan was installed in the tank). 2/3 of all produced vehicles were supplied to the allies (Great Britain and the USSR) under Lend-Lease. Combat weight : 27.9 tons Armor thickness : 13-51 mm Speed : 39 km/h Crew : 6-7 people Armament : 75 and 37 mm cannons, 3-4 7.62 mm machine guns Produced : 6258

Wheeled vehicles. Next step

Players' opinions on the new branch were mixed. Moreover, the reviews were based only on guesses and scattered information from various sources, and not on personal experience.

This made the developers understand that wheeled vehicles are of concern to the community, which means they need more information to form an opinion about them on their own.

Only by working together can we make the game better, and it is necessary to listen and hear all players, regardless of their point of view on a particular issue.

The most important thing is that this opinion, criticism or words of encouragement is constructive, responsible and aimed at making the game better for all players.

More about the car

Distinctive mechanics of the Panhard EBR 75 (FL 10):

  • Two driving modes: normal and high-speed. The regular one provides better maneuverability at a fairly high speed. In the second mode, the speed is even higher, but controllability is reduced.
  • The target locking mechanic allows you to automatically lock onto an enemy vehicle by simply clicking in a limited area near the target.
  • The dash allows you to quickly gain speed in order to dodge enemy shots in a difficult situation.

First step

To begin with, the developers decided to give the opportunity to test the wheel mechanics and express their opinions to the most organized groups of players: bloggers and their subscribers, communities on social networks, clan players - regardless of their position in relation to Wargaming.

Each community will receive a certain number of quotas and will be able to determine its own participants. After this, the Tier VIII Panhard EBR 75 (FL 10) vehicle will be credited to the accounts of players selected in accordance with the quotas.

Participants will have a week to play with the technology and form their own opinion about it, produce analytical materials and fill out questionnaires that they will receive.

The development team will take into account all the feedback and release a separate publication in which they will share their conclusions and future plans for wheeled vehicles.

Wheeled vehicles of France - Development

Two years ago, celebrating the 100th anniversary of tanks, the developers released a special game mode. In it, players were asked to escort a Mark I tank to its destination using Lanchester wheeled armored vehicles. This fun and unusual mode allowed us to test future game changes.

It was recently mentioned that a new vehicle branch with unique gameplay was on the horizon. These vehicles “changed their shoes” from tracks to wheels. The equipment has passed internal testing and is now being sent for supertest.

What do developers want? Bring back the active “light” and create new opportunities for its implementation, since high-level LTs began to play more from damage and passive reconnaissance.

Why the French? France has one of the most famous wheeled armored vehicles, Panhard. It was mass-produced, was in service for a long time and participated in several military conflicts. In addition, Panhard has a special all-wheel drive mechanic that can be implemented in the game.
