Description of the design of the GAZ-3409 “BOBR” all-terrain vehicle

GAZ-3409 “Beaver” is a tracked amphibious all-terrain vehicle. Engine type: diesel. The “Beaver” snow and swamp-going vehicle is designed for movement both on asphalt and over rough terrain. Thanks to the rubber shoes on the tracks, it can move both on asphalt and on the ground without injuring them.

The history of the creation of the all-terrain vehicle "Beaver" dates back to Soviet times. At that time, all-terrain vehicles were created mainly for the military. The first predecessor of the vehicle can be considered the GT-S tracked tractor. It was intended for transporting personnel, evacuating the wounded, towing trailers up to two tons and carriage guns, as well as for other army needs in the Far North.

The designers declare this all-terrain vehicle as an amphibian. However, its seaworthiness is very low. Due to poor body seals, water can enter the engine compartment, fuel and transmission. In addition, as tests have shown, even on a slight wave, the GAZ 3409 “Beaver” all-terrain vehicle can lose stability, list and sink.

The designers sacrificed “seaworthiness” for such an important factor as the all-terrain vehicle’s carrying capacity. For example, for similar purely land models it is quite large, for the same GT-S and GT-SM it was 1000 kilograms with the ability to tow a trailer up to two tons, but their weight is not much different from the GAZ 3409. But for the Beaver it is only 600 kilograms, this is lower than that of its tracked counterparts, and the weight of the towed trailer is much less.

The design of the body and interior was borrowed from the prototype - the Sobol car. The influence of the classic Soviet automobile school GAZ is felt here. The steep hood, which extends into a wide windshield, gives good visibility to the front, and the headlights provide good visibility even at night. The all-terrain vehicle is equipped with rear-view mirrors. Control is carried out like a caterpillar tractor using levers located to the left and right of the seat, as well as pedals and a gearshift lever.

Movement afloat is carried out using tracks and switching them to maximum speed. This scheme provides satisfactory speed and controllability, sufficient for crossing water obstacles up to 30-40 meters wide. When crossing large spaces, it is advisable to install an additional outboard motor, but it is also worth remembering the insufficient reliability of the all-terrain vehicle afloat.

One of the positive qualities of the all-terrain vehicle is its high speed on the highway. Not many off-road vehicles are capable of driving along the highway at the speed of 60 km/h declared by the manufacturers. This eliminates the need to use a trailer to tow an all-terrain vehicle when leaving, allows you to get there on your own and immediately drive off into rough terrain.

This property allows the all-terrain vehicle to be used by the Ministry of Emergency Situations, medical services, forestry and fisheries protection services, allowing it to reach remote areas and provide assistance where it is needed. Versatility, which makes the car not only suitable for hunting and fishing, but also for everyday movement on the roads, the possibility of garage-free storage, the ability to operate both in severe frost and at high temperatures, in high mountain conditions make the car a convenient transport where there is no roads or need to leave them.

Wheels

First, you need to determine the tire sizes. Many people take tires from ZIL-131 or from Oka, in which the top of the wire cord is removed. One of the screws is cut through the cut window, the wire is removed around the entire perimeter. Then the sidewall from the cord to the tread is cut at a distance of about 8 cm. The fang is undermined and the edges are trimmed with a knife.

This is done clockwise, after which a tread is formed. A picture is placed on the camera, most often a Christmas tree is chosen, but you can deviate from this rule. The pattern is cut with a knife, the angle is trapezoidal.

After which you will need perseverance, since the peeling process is quite long. There is no need to rush, so as not to ruin all the work, making the work unsuitable for use.

Homemade swamp vehicles can be no worse than industrial ones, if all the nuances are taken into account correctly. When choosing a tread, you need to take into account that it must be self-cleaning, this is important when moving through wetlands.

On peat bogs, you should not choose too deep a terrain to avoid breaking through the surface and loss of adhesion. A rare pattern is selected for movement on sand and snow. Disks, as a rule, are standard. But many people prefer to attach additional “basins” to belts or transport tape.

Body and engine

The body of the GAZ-3409 “Beaver” all-terrain vehicle is based on the body of the “Sobol” minibus. To access the cabin, two doors are used on the right side of the body and one on the left. There are two versions of the all-terrain vehicle - a passenger version and a cargo-passenger version. In the first version, the vehicle carries up to 6 people and 600 kg of cargo, in the second – up to 3 people and 800 kg of load. The second option has an open platform at the rear, which can be covered with an awning.

In the front part of the driver's cabin there is a standard instrument panel from Sobol. The machine is controlled in part by levers, which are used to brake and turn the machine. The pedals control the clutch and engine speed. Instead of a steering wheel, a plastic plug is installed, and there is a block of steering column switches. One of the useful options for the Beaver is air conditioning.

To ensure the technical characteristics of the GAZ-3409 “Beaver” is equipped with a four-cylinder Cummins ISF2.8 diesel engine. Exactly the same engine is used on various light-duty trucks from the GAZ plant. The engine with a volume of 2.8 liters develops a power of about 131 horsepower. Air is supplied to the engine through an air duct leading to the roof level. This solution completely eliminates the risk of water getting into the intake manifold. The diesel fuel supply on board is 185 liters, which is enough for at least 600-650 kilometers.

The basic equipment option includes the installation of a five-speed manual transmission. Optionally, the car can be equipped with an automatic transmission. Regardless of the type of box, the all-terrain vehicle is capable of towing trailers with a total weight of up to 1.3 tons.

Heart, brain, neurons

Seeing Alexey driving his all-terrain vehicle, neighbor Pyotr Kremok approached. After watching with interest and admiration, he said: “Well done, you put together such a car. Sometimes he doesn't leave the garage for days. Lesha is my kindred spirit, I, too, have been working on technology all my life, I understand what kind of patience you need to have for a homemade product to work the way it should work.”

There are many Kulibins in Rus' today, creating something that the mass auto industry has not yet reached, and the flat-rotating all-terrain vehicle, of course, was invented even before Guskov. But the model, on which he has been working for five years, has absorbed so many of the author’s innovative solutions that it’s time to think about a patent for the invention.

The diesel heart is from a Mercedes, the “spine” – the turning mechanism – is from a caterpillar tractor, the “brain” – the gearbox – is from front-wheel drive “Zhiguli”, the chains – “neurons” – are from a combine harvester. Plus a metal body, welded by hand. All together this is Peregar, the inventor gave such an unexpected and sonorous name to the powerful machine.

Instructions

Let's consider the production of vehicles on low-pressure tires. You will need a frame left over from an old motorcycle, to which a self-made frame is welded. The engine is usually taken new, in order to avoid breakdowns at the most inopportune moment.

The Tula type motorcycle engine fits perfectly. Ignition is best suited from a tractor; you shouldn’t place much hope on a regular battery. Next, the fuel tank is installed, the steering wheel and seat are attached.

A Ural type front fork without shock absorbers is just right, then a chain drive is installed. This design is often performed without brakes; to stop it is enough to stop the engine. The easiest way is to take the wheels from a combine, with the top layer of rubber removed.

All-terrain vehicle Gas 3409 Beaver

Gas 3409 Beaver is an all-terrain vehicle on tracks capable of overcoming any obstacles. Beaver is intended for a wide range of people. Many energy, geology, geophysics, oil and gas enterprises prefer to travel off-road on the Gas 34 09. Also, the Gas 3409 Beaver all-terrain vehicle is in demand among fishermen, hunters of various tour companies, and people who prefer active recreation. The all-terrain vehicle "Beaver" got its name for its external resemblance to a rodent. Gas 3409 is produced at the Zavolzhsky Crawler Tractor Plant. The all-terrain vehicle "Beaver" is capable of moving for a considerable time on water at a speed of 5 km per hour.

The buoyancy of the all-terrain vehicle Gas 3409 Beaver is ensured by the installed displacement body. Deflectors installed on the swamp vehicle improve controllability on the water. Favorable conditions for this all-terrain vehicle are swamps, flooded forest roads and clearings, where it feels like it is on asphalt. Thanks to the small base, you can easily turn around in a dense forest or narrow clearing. When you run into small trees, they easily fall over.

The swamp vehicle is used in areas with temperatures from -50 to + 40 degrees and mountainous areas with a maximum altitude of almost 5 km above sea level. The interior of the Gas 3409 is quite spacious, if necessary, you can install air conditioning. If necessary, you can install an all-metal body and asphalt tracks with rubber-metal hinges.

The all-terrain vehicle Gas 3409 "Beaver", the price of which is not determined by the level of equipment, is presented in various modifications. The first search and rescue type has standard Beaver technical characteristics. Additional equipment is installed on it: a winch with 4-ton reinforcement, a hatch, an additional roof rack, a safety fence and various driver's tools. There is also a special niche for storing axes, hammers and saws.

Emergency rescue work on difficult roads is an easy task for the Firefighter ATV. It is distinguished from a standard all-terrain vehicle by its ultra-low ground pressure. The Cummins ISF 2.8 engine has a turbine. Fuel reserve is 600 km on the highway. Additionally, the following equipment is installed: Electric power, lighting, signaling and special equipment for rescue operations. They include: an electric generator, a reel with a cable, dielectric boots, a self-rescuer GDZK - 3, climber’s equipment, a three-legged ladder, a vulkan 12v flashlight, scissors for cutting wires and a spotlight with a power of 1 kW. Also included is a wetsuit, lifebuoy and flashlight.

Exploitation

The GAZ 3409 Bobr tracked snow and swamp vehicle is designed for operation at temperatures from -50 to +40 degrees Celsius at an altitude of up to 4.65 km above sea level. Due to the presence of tracks, an amphibious SUV can cross water obstacles (buoyancy is provided by a body with displacement properties): depths of up to 1.2 meters can be waded, deeper bodies of water can be swam at a speed not exceeding 5 km/h. The presence of deflectors on the body allows you to achieve good handling when driving on water.

Swampy terrain and difficult forest roads are not a serious obstacle for this vehicle; moreover, in these difficult conditions it demonstrates relatively high speed (when driving on a flat surface it is a maximum of 63 km/h) and excellent mobility.

For driving on asphalt city roads, special asphalt tracks with removable shoes made of rubber are provided. The tracks have one-sided rigidity and bend in both directions.

The Beaver snow and swamp-going vehicle is distinguished by good maneuverability, making it possible to quickly turn around in cramped conditions (for example, in a forest clearing). The relatively short length of the model allows it to maneuver between trees in a dense forest; if necessary, an SUV can knock down a small tree without harming structural elements.

Prices for GAZ-3409 "Beaver"

The price of the Beaver snow and swamp all-terrain vehicle can vary greatly depending on the year of manufacture and the desire to sell. The new one sells for three and a half million. Used - from 300,000 to two or three million. However, if you can buy a GAZ 3409 “Beaver” all-terrain vehicle for a million, then it’s unlikely that anyone will buy it for two or three.

It should be noted that when purchasing a machine, the manufacturer provides a guarantee and certain service. Most consumers of this type of transport are located in Siberia, the Far North and the Far East. Having bought a used car, a person located in Moscow will be very puzzled by its transportation, and is also unlikely to be able to inspect it in person, and even all the available offers. At the same time, the new car can be delivered completely complete to the consumer, and its price will be comparable to a new business or luxury class car.

You can ask your question to our author:

Market: analogues and competitors

Initially, the all-terrain vehicle was conceived as a very reliable, durable and not the most expensive model, accessible not only to the elite. We can say that the designer succeeded. Sherpa can be easily transported without the use of special equipment to the place of operation; most other all-terrain vehicles will have to be towed on a heavy trailer using a truck or tractor. It is convenient and affordable for a city dweller. True, the price of the all-terrain vehicle itself looks somewhat overpriced if you evaluate the cost of its layout.

You can name a number of other all-terrain vehicles, which are much more difficult to manufacture and more expensive in cost, but they are cheaper on the market than the Sherpa. For example, “Forester”, “Junta”, “Husky”. All of them have the main difference from Sherpa - they are controlled using a standard car steering wheel. Such a system, of course, is more familiar to the average driver than tractor control. However, it has many disadvantages - it is more complex to manufacture, the turning radius is larger, and the driver has fewer options when passing difficult areas.

It must be admitted that when driving on bare asphalt, such cars will have slightly less tread wear. And the maximum speed of the same “Junta” is better - up to 70. However, you have to pay for this with worse cross-country ability. Still, when a person buys an amphibious all-terrain vehicle, he rather wants to drive everywhere than just drive fast. There's a car for that. Today, Sherp has no serious competitors in its class; it is produced in Russia and Ukraine, and is also sold abroad to Canada. Its high price can be considered not as a payment for the production of an all-terrain vehicle, but as a payment for the original idea and concept that allowed it to do what it can do.

At the customer's request, the manufacturing plant can convert the passenger version into a special-purpose vehicle (fire truck, drilling rig, etc.).

Engineers have achieved uniform distribution of load across the entire plane of the tracks. This ensures minimal pressure on the ground when moving, resulting in no damage to the soil and vegetation. The tracks are of the asphalt track type and are equipped with removable rubber shoes. This allows you to travel on public roads without special permission. It can be used in harsh conditions: the vehicle can withstand temperatures from -50 to +40 degrees Celsius.

The design is based on a standard tractor layout. The body is made like a boat. The body is attached to the frame from above. The American-Chinese engine is equipped with four cylinders and develops up to 130 horsepower. The tracks consist of tracks without lugs. The tracks rotate relative to each other in the same direction. The all-terrain vehicle is able to overcome swamps, rivers, snow-covered areas and other areas that are not equipped with an asphalt surface.

It moves through water by rotating caterpillars. Thanks to this quality, the GAZ-3409 Beaver got its name. Additional equipment includes deflectors that improve the controllability of the equipment on the water. The car is controlled afloat in the same way as on land. If necessary, you can stop in the middle of a pond. This feature was liked by fishermen.

    All-terrain vehicle GAZ-3409 Beaver

If you are faced with the task of organizing the transportation of goods or people over rough terrain in particularly difficult climatic conditions, then the GAZ-3409 may be suitable for solving it. This unit is a tracked snow and swamp-going vehicle, the body of which is made on the basis of the Sobol car. It is actively used as a vehicle in the oil and gas industry, in the field of geological and geophysical exploration, as well as in tourism, hunting and fishing. In addition, recently it has been chosen by connoisseurs of extreme types of recreation for their needs.

    Performance characteristics

The swamp vehicle in question is better known to the general public under the sonorous name “Beaver”. He earned popular recognition thanks to his universalism. The passenger version of the all-terrain vehicle has a fairly comfortable four-seater interior and a cabin with seats for the driver and one more passenger. In addition to transporting people, the GAZ-3409 is capable of transporting cargo or special equipment, as well as towing a trailer weighing up to 1300 kg. The all-terrain vehicle can be converted into a fire truck or even a drilling rig.

Thus, “Beaver” is produced with the following body modifications:

    • passenger version;
    • option with a loading platform.

This snow and swamp-going vehicle is characterized by ultra-low specific pressure on the ground due to the uniform distribution of the load over the entire plane of the tracks. You can even drive it on regular roads. To prevent damage to the road surface when driving along the highway, the all-terrain vehicle is equipped with asphalt tracks with the ability to install removable rubber shoes. At the same time, “Beaver” can boast of truly heroic health and durability: it can be stored and operated without a garage at temperatures from -50C to + 40C.

    Overcoming water obstacles

For the GAZ-3409 "Beaver" any body of water or wetland is not a serious obstacle! Its technical capabilities make it possible to cross flooded sections of roads or rivers with a weak current. The swamp vehicle moves through the water by rewinding its tracks. Probably, it was the sight of the floating “Beaver” that prompted the designers to give the car such a name.

If during operation you plan to frequently cross water surfaces, then it would be useful to acquire special deflectors that will improve control over the GAZ-3409 when using it as a watercraft. At the same time, driving an all-terrain vehicle on water is practically no different from driving on land. The turn of the all-terrain vehicle is carried out by slowing down the movement of one of the tracks, and braking is performed by engaging the reverse gear.

In addition, the swamp rover can stay afloat without any movement. This feature of the GAZ-3409 has already been appreciated by avid fishermen. After all, on it you can swim out to the middle of the reservoir, stop, cast a fishing rod and indulge in your favorite activity in ideally comfortable conditions.

    "Beaver" inside and out

Inside the cabin of the all-terrain vehicle there are levers for controlling the all-terrain vehicle and for changing gears. Under the right hand there are handles for the power take-off and multiplier. The salon has a good supply of internal free space. Soft, comfortable seats add comfort.

Upon individual order, the swamp vehicle can be equipped with a hatch or an air conditioner can be installed in the cabin. Another advantage that the Beaver all-terrain vehicle can boast of is its autonomous heater. It runs on diesel fuel and does not depend on starting the snow and swamp vehicle itself. This option is an excellent help when operating the Beaver in winter.

In general, it must be said that this swamp vehicle copes well with its tasks. It is not for nothing that some government services and organizations use it to carry out emergency rescue or drilling operations in areas with difficult climatic conditions. In the end, “Beaver” can be useful to ordinary citizens who want to bring a touch of extreme sports into their lives and go to the taiga, to the forest... away from civilization.

    Modifications

The GAZ-3409 all-terrain vehicle has been produced at the machine-building plant for more than 20 years. During this period, engineers have developed several vehicle configuration options and a number of modifications that are used for various off-road conditions. In Moscow, such transport will not be needed, but on the roads of the Far North, Far East and Siberia it will be indispensable. By individual order, the client can choose the upholstery material in the cabin, the installation of a fresh air hatch and air conditioning, a steering wheel and an automatic transmission.

Model 34039 Irbis received an enlarged monobody, in which the number of passenger seats increased to 12. There are additionally 4 sleeping places. The carrying capacity has increased to 2 tons, the possible weight of the tug has increased to 1.9 tons. The fuel tank holds 400 liters. The tracks are equipped with special hinges that increase the wear resistance of the running resource.

Modification 34039 received 2 body options - metal and canvas. Both are equipped with air supply hatches. The heating system in winter does not depend on engine operation. Number of passenger seats - 10 (4 sleepers).

GAZ-3351 received a body made of fiberglass with fiberglass reinforcement. Equipped with additional sound and thermal insulation. It consists of two parts: the first can accommodate 5 people, the second - 11. Upon request, the second part of the body can be converted to meet the needs of special services (ambulance, fire, Ministry of Emergency Situations, etc.).

The GAZ-3344 all-terrain vehicle received steering control and the best cross-country ability among vehicles with a monobody. Technical tests were carried out in the impenetrable forests of Siberia, where the vehicle proved its ability to overcome high obstacles.

    GAZ-34039 "Irbis"

A further step in the evolution of the all-terrain vehicle was the GAZ-34039 “Irbis” model, first presented in Nizhny Tagil at the Sixth International Exhibition of Technical Equipment for Defense and Security “Defense and Protection-2O1O”, and mass production began in 2O11. These special vehicles are used in geological exploration expeditions, in the construction and maintenance of oil and gas pipelines, power and communication lines, and railway tracks in the harsh natural and climatic conditions of the Far North, Siberia and the Far East.

The classic all-terrain platform GAZ-34039 is used to produce the Irbis. However, a completely different superstructure is installed on it - a plastic cabin from an ekranoplan, developed by. This new model features improved driver's seat ergonomics, improved visibility, a more modern instrument panel and an additional interior heater.

An important change is a different layout of the power plant, in which the engine is hooded inside the cabin. This greatly facilitates its maintenance, especially in winter frosts. “Irbis” also offers a variety of design options: fire truck, drilling rig, cargo-passenger version, residential module, and so on.
