Izh 58 May 12 gauge injector malfunction

History of appearance

The production period of this gun was very long - from 1958 to 1980. The designers of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant managed to do the almost impossible: combine high power with low weight, while maintaining a classic appearance and thoughtful ergonomics.

Initially, the IZH-58 shotgun was produced in 20 gauge. It was light, only 2.7–2.9 kg, which quickly won honor among adherents of commercial hunting. The manufacturer has provided another modification, for the 28th caliber. This gun was perfect for hunting on the go, but later it did not catch on with shooters as much as the 20-gauge model.

Hunting rifles IZH-58 20 caliber
Inspired by the success of the IZH-58, designer L. I. Pugachev in 1960 began creating a new, more powerful model. The 16-caliber double-barreled shotgun was taken as a basis, and after significant modernization it was possible to create a 12-caliber model. It was named IZH-58M. The gun was put into production in 1971.

One of the main advantages of the IZH-58 gun is its unique resistance to external factors. This model withstands bad weather perfectly:

  • resistant to severe frosts and sudden temperature changes;
  • has a closed design, so it is not afraid of splashing water, dust and small debris getting into the trigger mechanism;
  • does not fail at high humidity.

The mechanism of the gun is reliably protected from splashes and small debris.
Thanks to these qualities, hunters could use the IZH-58 in all climatic zones of the USSR, including the taiga and mountainous regions.

The 12- and 16-gauge models had the best shooting performance. That is why the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant concentrated the main power on these samples. The popularity of this legendary double-barreled shotgun can also be judged by the fact that in the period from 58 to 80 of the last century, the plant produced over 1 million 360 thousand IZH-58 shotguns, presented in all four modifications.

Further modernization of this model led to the appearance of a prototype equipped with:

  • aluminum box;
  • trunks connected by three couplings;
  • steel reinforced pin.

Technical progress dictated its conditions, and in the 80s the production of newer, modern guns began. The IZH-58 was replaced by the IZH-43 model.

A further development of the double-barreled shotgun was the IZH-43 shotgun

What can be concluded?

IZH-58 is a well-balanced gun that does not have strong recoil or heavy weight. For effective shooting, you can use bullets, shot and buckshot. The appearance is stylish, there is nothing superfluous, the design is simple and reliable.

The non-automatic safety guarantees a high level of safety and eliminates the possibility of an accidental shot. There is no automatic fuse. The downside is the high force when releasing the hook, but this defect can be eliminated by fine-tuning. The manufacturer claims a working resource reserve of 6-7 thousand shots. With proper care, the IZH-58 operates stably after 15 thousand shots. The price of IZH-58 varies from 3,000 rubles. up to 30,000 rub. Depending on the condition, you can only buy it if you have a weapons permit.

IZH-58 is the best representative of its class, outperforming all other Izhevsk creations in total advantages. The released copies of the rifle were successfully sold out not only in our country, but also in other countries of Europe and America.

Purpose of the gun

Running and commercial hunting is the main purpose of this double-barreled shotgun from the Soviet period. Thanks to its resistance to external factors, the IZH-58 shotgun has become the main weapon at the disposal of hunters in all corners of the country. The huntsmen readily used it.

Due to its large dimensions, this gun is not very suitable for self-defense, but foresters use it for shooting or scaring away predators. If desired, it can be used for sports shooting.

IZH-58 is suitable for hunting game birds

Due to its good dispersion, the small caliber is excellent for catching game birds. IZH-58 can be taken for hunting fur-bearing animals, and with the proper skills, the shooter can easily get a good trophy. As for the large caliber, it is ideal for medium and large game, ranging from wild boars to bears.

Advantages and disadvantages

Let's move on to the most important part of the review. Many hunters are interested in why the IZH-58 double-barreled shotgun acquired the title of timeless Soviet classic and how did it win the hearts of hunters throughout the post-Soviet space? This can be understood by looking at the main advantages of this model:

  1. Power. Initially, the gun was developed as a running gun. The manufacturer wanted to make it easy to handle so that hunters could safely take it with them even on long hikes, so preference was given to a small caliber (by the way, 28 never entered mass production). However, later the appearance of 12-gauge samples helped to fully unleash the potential of the horizontal double-barreled shotgun, making it a truly formidable weapon.
  2. Accuracy. It is also surprising that experienced shooters can accurately place a shot charge into a standard landscape sheet at a distance of 35–50 meters. The IZH-58 shotgun is so accurate that it is suitable even for beginners who do not yet have good shooting skills with smooth-bore weapons.
  3. Versatility. IZH-58 is suitable for shooting with both shot and bullet. The gun supports cartridges with different powder weights, which opens up tremendous opportunities for hunters to choose ammunition to suit their style and preferences. In addition, this model is unpretentious to the quality of cartridges, which makes it a real find for domestic shooters.
  4. Durability. The Izhevsk Mechanical Plant created many excellent hunting rifles, the stock of which reached 10 and even 20 thousand shots. However, the IZH-58 gun can give them a huge head start. According to the owners, this wonderful weapon retains its original qualities even after 50 thousand shots, without losing its bite, accuracy and power.
  5. Cheapness. Surprisingly, with all the listed advantages, the IZH-58 gun was and remains one of the most affordable.

As you can see, the IZH-58 has many positive qualities. This also includes a properly selected balance, thanks to which the gun fits perfectly in the hands and allows you to aim with comfort. The design of the IZH-58 itself is extremely simple and understandable even to a beginner, so handling and cleaning do not pose much difficulty.

If desired, the shooter can load the IZH-58 with buckshot: the gun supports the appropriate type of cartridge. Despite the high power, this model has moderate recoil.

An additional advantage is safety in handling. The manufacturer has equipped the IZH-58 with a non-automatic fuse, which reduces the likelihood of an accidental shot to a minimum.

The IZH-58 gun also has disadvantages, but they are few. Owners note that a certain amount of effort is required to fire a shot. This can be eliminated with special finishing (an experienced gunsmith can easily cope with this task).

The bluing of a double-barreled shotgun is quite unstable

Unfortunately, IZH-58 does not have good anti-corrosion protection. This is due to the low quality of the chemical composition that was applied to the metal components. The owner needs to take this fact into account. Regular cleaning, proper care, high-quality lubrication and timely removal of moisture will help maintain the integrity of metal components and protect them from wormholes and rust.

Ejector IZH58MAE

moved from Smoothbore weapons
Good afternoon, everyone. I’ve been reading the forum for a long time, but this is the first time I’m writing. So, in order. On occasion, I bought an ordinary Izh58, birch, according to the table, 83. In principle, I like the gun, but when shooting, one joint came out. Fetter cartridges, a cartridge case with a high skirt when the gun was broken after firing, the cartridge cases remained in the chambers at most a millimeter out, barely removed with a screwdriver, repeated shots with the same result. Upon careful study of the ejector/estractor mechanism, it turned out that when the gun is broken, the cartridge case is mechanically shifted by 1.5- 2mm i.e. by 15-20 percent of the ejector stroke (see photo 1), and the remaining 80 percent of the stroke is due to the ejector spring (see photo 2) which cannot cope with the tight sleeve. Question for experts: is this a design or a jamb of this specimen?

Is this a construct or a defect of this instance?

During the experiments, I removed the ejector spring. I unexpectedly liked the result: the gun opens much smoother and easier. I want to try to remake the cartridge ejection mechanism. Solder both halves of the ejector and increase the size shown in the photo to 55mm, which should ensure sufficient extension of the cartridges. If anyone can Post a photo and dimensions of the ejector IZH58,58M,58MA I will be grateful.

I want to try to remake the cartridge ejection mechanism. Solder both halves of the ejector

That is, abandon the ejector in favor of a simple extractor. Just, for starters, try removing the parts on the forend that are responsible for selecting the operation of the ejector. Then the ejectors will start working like a simple extractor, maybe everything will be fine.

I had the same problem. The ejector rods were bent. I straightened them and slightly polished the outer surface, that is, I need to ensure they move smoothly in the socket in the barrel coupling. Now it works like clockwork (pah-pah).

I have absolutely the same problem, on the same model! So I’ll follow the topic!

There are still thoughts about converting it to an extractor. To do this, first knock out the axle from the forend, remove both rockers and the ejector sear from it. For aesthetics, we put the axle in place. We solder both ejectors with soft solder. We solder a metal insert of about 3 mm onto the ejector protrusion with the same solder, here I would like to wait for the results of measurements, especially of ejectorless ejectors. This will increase the extension of the sleeves from 2 to 5-5.5 mm. If this is not enough, install a spring 2-3 times weaker than the ejector spring to help. This is the case somewhere.

A segment with a height of half the diameter and a thickness of 3-3.1 mm was cut out of the cylindrical part of the M6 bolt, which was soldered into the ejector groove.

The sleeves will extend as in photo 1 at the beginning of the post. The segment will allow the extension of the sleeves to be as close as possible to the position in photo 2. As a matter of fact, if position 1 suits you, you can not solder anything, but only remove the spring and rockers in the forend.

Description of the design of IZH-58

The design of this gun will be familiar to any shooter who knows about the features of domestically produced smoothbore hunting rifles. Interchangeable barrels located in a horizontal plane have different types of choke constriction:

  • right - pay (0.5 mm);
  • left - choke (1 mm).

Thanks to this feature, the hunter can choose which barrel he prefers to shoot from. The low grade chrome plating mentioned above is found inside the chamber and both chambers. On the outside they have dark chrome plating.

Taking the IZH-58 gun in your hands, it is recommended to pay attention to the barrel coupling area. It is marked with designations, namely: barrel diameter, year of manufacture, permissible pressure in the chamber channel. The same information is available on the plane of the front bolt hook.

Designations on the receiver coupling IZH-58

To secure the trunks, there is a locking bar equipped with three hooks:

  • two of them are located under the block;
  • the third is located above the trunks.

Locking is carried out using a rotary lever. The IZH-58 shotgun supports firing cartridges with smoky and smokeless powder, at the owner’s choice.

The barrels are connected by a strap, which serves as a support for the front sight. Thanks to the moderate width of the twin barrels, the aiming process is simple and convenient.

Having broken the barrels, the shooter automatically cocks the hammers and compresses the mainsprings. The design of the IZH-58 triggers includes safety platoons and strikers. Some models are equipped with an automatic fuse, which is retracted to the rear position and secures the sear. You can turn it off by turning the shutter 180 degrees.

IZH-58 automatic fuse device

If desired, the owner can upgrade the IZH-58 gun by installing an automatic system for ejecting spent cartridges. When breaking barrels, unused cartridges are simply pulled out by 3 mm. Without this system, you have to remove spent cartridges manually.

IZH-58 shotgun stocks come in two main types:

  • semi-pistol - typical for models released after the 60s;
  • English - they can be identified by the presence of a metal butt plate.

Factory zeroing

Interesting fact. According to historical information, every IZH-58 gun produced by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant was subject to mandatory factory zeroing. For this, no more than three shots were used per barrel. Shooting was carried out at a target measuring 750 mm from a distance of 35 meters. A gun was considered to be of high quality if at least 50% of the pellets from one shot completely hit the target.

Having collected the data obtained, the specialists entered them into a passport and placed it in a box along with the weapon. This proved to the owner that the IZH-58 gun had passed the necessary tests and was ready for use in real conditions.

Technical characteristics of IZH-58 shotguns

Peculiarities

Izhevsk weapons are considered classics. There was a time when passports indicated the names of the craftsmen involved in the assembly and debugging of ILs. This is no longer the case, but the excellent structure of the specimens remains.

IZH-58 16 caliber is an ideal solution for those who hunt various animals and shoot at sporting ranges. The high quality and precision of the barrel, made of unique 50A steel, is valued by hunters.

During production, craftsmen paid special attention to the block: it was tested on different types of devices and exposed to high temperatures. Now the legendary gun is produced in other ways, which has reduced the price. Although something has remained unchanged - the same barrel production technology has remained: this part is made from the same steel as in the distant seventies.

Model IZH-58 16 gauge has a table with a length of 725 to 730 mm, made of high-strength steel 50PA. The weight of a horizontal plane is up to 3.2 kg, although since the seventies the limit has been specified as no more than 3.2 kg. These characteristics are averaged. To find out what a particular gun has, you need to measure its parameters.

An important condition when testing horizontal bars is the quality of the design. The guns were tested using standard technology using cartridges with more gunpowder than is usually loaded. During such tests, the stamp “H” was stamped on the gun in a trapezoidal frame. The sixteenth caliber was tested at a pressure of 0.85 t/cm2 with a powder charge of 2.6 g and a shot of 30 g.

Modifications of IZH-58

It is worth noting that the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant produced many interesting modifications of the Izh-58 gun. A striking example is the IZH-58MA-20M. This version was created specifically for firing particularly powerful Magnum-type cartridges with a case length of up to 76 mm.

The IZH-58 16k version was produced for the standard 16 gauge, and the IZH-58-12 version for the 12 gauge. Please note that the latter gun was equipped with a non-automatic safety and had a grooved rib for aiming.

The IZH-58MA modification is considered more advanced. The manufacturer has equipped it with an automatic fuse. This gun was produced specifically for 12 and 16 gauges. The IZH-58MAE model was equipped with an ejector for quickly removing spent cartridges.

In addition to the so-called everyday semi-automatic shotgun “Bekas Auto”, I also have the IZH-58MA in my arsenal. This gun did not appear by chance. After the sale of the IZH-27, with a slightly crooked lower barrel, it became necessary to purchase a new version for going into the forest.
