Beginners are sometimes wary of pre-pumped air rifles: they are more expensive than traditional spring-piston rifles, they have unusual calibers and a complex filling system. You can hear stories about the unreliability of such weapons: the high-pressure cylinder under the barrel is a source of increased danger.
These are all myths. PCP pneumatics are safe for the shooter, have enormous power, and their accuracy of fire is often superior to firearms in comparable calibers. But first things first, read the article and learn everything about the nuances of purchasing, modifying and using PCP weapons.
FX Boss Air Rifle Review
The Swedish brand FX Airguns produces expensive air rifles that operate on the pre-pumping (PSP) principle. They are used by both professional athletes and amateurs for target shooting and hunting.
The Boss rifle in 7.62 mm caliber is quite large and massive: with a total length of 120 cm, it weighs 3.2-3.4 kilograms (without an optical sight). Available in two variations - with a plastic or wooden (walnut) stock. The only difference between them (besides appearance) is weight: the model with plastic is 200 grams lighter (weighs 3.2 kg).
The model is an enhanced version of the FX Royale 500 rifle (with caliber 6.35) - visually it is easy to notice the similarity. The Boss features a new - larger - barrel, higher pressure and no power regulator.
The air rifle barrel is equipped with a massive thick sound moderator. It works quite well: even inside a shooting range, the pop from the shot is barely noticeable. When firing, a slight recoil is felt - the barrel throws up.
The rifle has no power regulator - everything is set to maximum. The pressure of the cylinder (with a capacity of 500 ml) according to the parameters declared by the manufacturer is 160-220 atmospheres, but in fact it can be filled up to 245-250. From a 220 atmosphere refill you can fire up to 3 full magazines (i.e. up to 27 bullets) without a drop in performance, and in total you can fire about 30 shots.
Cocking the rifle is biathlon: to reload, you need to pull the cocking lever back and return it forward - after which the weapon will be ready to fire. The movement of the lever is smooth and soft and does not require any serious effort. The weapon is equipped with protection against sending a second bullet into the barrel.
The Boss is one of the most accurate of all FX rifles. Its use is effective at distances up to 200-220 meters. At a distance of 100 meters, a rifle sighted from a rest, with good optics, in the hands of an experienced shooter demonstrates a bullet spread of up to 20-25 mm, at 120 meters - 30 mm.
The power of the weapon is also significant (up to 110 J, bullet flight speed is about 265 m/s): at a distance of 120 meters, the bullet splits glass bottles and breaks off pieces from bricks. With a heavy bullet (8-10 g), it is possible to hunt not only birds (geese, wood grouse), but also larger game: roe deer, beavers, hares.

Advantages and disadvantages
The advantages of the model include:
- high quality workmanship: all parts fit perfectly together and are made precisely;
- high power (110 J);
- excellent accuracy even at long distances;
- presence of a sound moderator;
- the box is identical to the rifles of the Royale and Verminator MK2 models (i.e., if repairs are necessary, parts from them can be used);
- adjustable match escapement;
- refilling through a quick-release port (reduces wear of parts and speeds up refilling);
- no need for modification (the rifle shoots perfectly out of the box and does not require any improvements);
- the opportunity to fully hunt small game.
Of the minuses:
- high price (about $2500);
- lack of service centers in the Russian Federation;
- heavy weight;
- Difficulty finding and ordering parts.
Purpose
The rifle is intended for long-range sport shooting. Can also be used for hunting birds and small game. It should be remembered that a license is required to purchase and use weapons of this power.
If you buy a rifle for hunting in difficult conditions (precipitation, high humidity), it is recommended to choose a model made of plastic.

review FX Impact pcp 7.62mm
FX Impact pcp pneumatic review
FX Impact 7.62mm
- a complex, high-tech geared rifle with a flask from FX Airguns (Sweden) with the ability to “quickly” change barrels (caliber) and fine-tune the trigger and valve travel. The standard caliber is usually 5.5 6.35 or 7.62. You can separately purchase pipes from the manufacturer for a hefty price tag: 2 pipes for 30 thousand rubles. at the 2017 dollar exchange rate.
FX Impact was brought in new for modification, they asked me to make it “like myself”, that is, what would I do with it if it were mine and plus the customer wants to hang a belt and asked to correctly install the Hawke 6.5-20×42 and shoot at 50m :
photo below - March 2022
What I have done:
- installing the swivel on the butt (I inserted an M5 screw for fastening)
- aligning the rammer - barrel. (The rammer initially stood a little crooked, which caused slight sticking when chambering the bullet)
- grinding, polishing the sharp edges of the rammer - so that the rubber in the barrel would not be cut, the edges were too poorly processed and the rubber kept scratching...
- The barrel is fixed, initially it is tightened with one screw on the side and quickly becomes loose, I made two additional attachment points, two additional ones appeared. screw, the barrel stands rigidly and reliably, does not become loose.
General impressions from the first acquaintance with the FX Impact rifle:
Lightweight, fairly comfortable rifle with good workmanship
Light pleasant high front cock
Although there are some minor flaws in the assembly, they are not critical.
Retractable muffler - you can “pull it forward” like a telescope, it will become longer. In 7.62 caliber I thought it would be very loud, but no, the original muffler copes quite well. I think it’s interesting, but if I put it back (assemble the telescope) it will probably be loud, I decided to check it at the shooting range, and surprisingly neither I nor those around me felt a difference in sound. Both the long and short versions have almost the same sound.
Possibility to quickly change caliber (two pipes were factory - one 5.5, the other 7.62)
Weaver bar at the bottom - you can quickly install a bipod
Weaver strap on the sides of the barrel - you can hang a swivel or a flashlight or whatever you want
High-quality original FX barrels, which immediately give very good or excellent accuracy, are a shame for our pneumatic builders, who have a complete lottery, but 99% of FX rifles shoot perfectly straight away, learn, mediocrity.
This is not a small shot, there is enough power, but only 2.9 grams for shuttlecocks. Speed about 265 capes.
FX Impact at 55 usually has 42 acorns. In the 7th model with a thick hole there are approximately 101 acorns.
Naturally, there can be no talk of any plump heifers. Shooting only with shuttlecocks. There is no reserve of power and meat for tearing. And this air is not the kind to be raped like that. Collective farming on it is expensive, stupid, inappropriate. Take the 65th Bush Hatsan, change the barrel to a polygonal one and accelerate forward as much as you want.

reliable
filling valve
- cool, with proper care and storage it will last 3-5 years.
Complex modular design and a lot of fasteners, requires a lot of attention during repairs
Unusual system - “drummer-combat valve”
. Here, not as usual, the striker hits and the valve opens, here it is done that the striker hits the protrusion on the rod, and the rod pulls the valve out of its place, and it “opens”…. original, unusual.
We grind and polish the chamfer, then the “rod” itself to reduce friction and reduce the amount of metal dust that will appear during rapid movements of the rod when opening the valve, less dirt - longer and more stable trouble-free operation.
So that there are no plugs and scratches over time. photo below - fx impact valve stem on the “thrust”, made carefully. It is better to modify the thrust itself, it was made at 4 with a minus.
The original hammer-fire valve
in the fx impact rifle, it was invented only to fit the front biathlon platoon in such a small compact body; this does not provide any special advantages and even adds some complexity.
Although I would be unfair if I do not point out the following - this design made it possible to place a twister on the front of the rifle, which has a rubber ball inside and is a damper - a limiter on the travel of the combat valve
, if your air flow is too high - screw it in a little, the mechanism will allow the valve to open so much , as before, there is a chance that the bullet speed will remain the same as before the torsion, but the air consumption will decrease.
Without such a system for placing the firing pin and valve, adjusting the stroke of the combat valve “on the fly” as in fx impact (without disassembling and bleeding the rifle) would be impossible.
photo below - Some details of the fx impact gearbox. Tiny.
The saddle is entirely plastic and there are very very small holes through it, any speck, dirt, shavings or anything else - all this will stop working and will begin to cause a lot of trouble for the owner.
photo below - find two differences (before and after):

Difficulty in repairing and maintaining FX Impact
The FX Impact rifle is a real maintenance nightmare for the average user; I have never seen such a hemorrhoidal repair. There are knots that are simply VERY difficult to get into, I had to make a special tool just to remove some of the elastic bands….
If something breaks, the likelihood of repairing it yourself without experience is almost zero, for about an hour I was just trying to understand how and where the air flows, then I was surprised at how the gearbox was located, then at how long this rifle took to disassemble. There are a lot of parts, even the screws of the same stage are DIFFERENT (two parts are usually fastened with the same screws).
For example, for one connection we have 6 screws in total, one
one of them is shorter than the others and must stand in a certain place, which is impossible to determine purely by eye, I made notes with a marker, put the letter “K”, that this is where the short screw needs to be screwed in, and the long ones in other places. I did it with a marker, because in the process of sorting through this pile of parts, the level of my fighting spirit dropped significantly, and I began to understand that I could no longer cope with visual and kinesthetic memory alone, I needed a lot of unwinding, my eyes would definitely become blurred and it would not be difficult to make a mistake during assembly.
I thought Koreans were perverts in terms of Pcp structure, but I was wrong... FX engineers came up with so many different moves and complex implementations here that the number of possible leaks in the design (due to natural wear and tear) doubled, thereby reducing reliability. There are 4 technological holes - that is, those that are made solely so that a drill or other tool simply gets to another processing site. Therefore, the rifle is very “leaky”, there are many places for possible leaks and this is a big minus.
The rifle is very technologically advanced - making one with simple equipment is very difficult, if not impossible. The Swedes show everyone - appreciate it as much as we can. Yes, cool, difficult, few people can do it. And just as stupid and impractical. The price for tricks in the complexity of production is expressed in the horse amount of banknotes that need to be paid for this toy.....
My in-depth conclusion on the FX Impact pcp rifle:
The FX Impact rifle is not for everyone and not for those who value reliability and practicality. Yes, it’s nice, yes, it’s cool, yes, it’s unusual and rare, and people will pay attention to it, but it’s IMPractical, overly complicated and stupid, and unreasonably expensive. Here you pay not for the result, but for the complexity of making something that could be done easier. The rifle cannot be called very high quality; it requires the same standard modifications as on almost any other air rifle. The same accuracy, silence and power can be obtained for a price 1.5-2 times less. The bullet will fly out and hit both here and there, it’s just that here it will fly out of very complexly made and assembled components.
When they brought the first rifle for revision, I was also surprised - wow, cool, wow, unusual. When they started wearing this model for repairs, I realized how much the appearance covers up the unpleasant reality. The admiration will disappear when you realize that it has turned into a very expensive and beautiful pile of parts, and there is nothing you can do about it. It can't be repaired on the knee. You need a specific tool, a lot of dexterity, straight arms, a bright place and a fresh head. It is advisable that no one distracts you.
In terms of time, the first broken fx impact (she is 2 years old) - I did it for 2 days in a row for 6 hours with all my fine-tuning and troubleshooting. I managed to persuade the gearbox the 4th time. Maybe you can do it better and faster, I’m not trying to compete with anyone, I’m stating a fact. As I gained experience, it began to work out better - if the problem is only in the gearbox and there is no need to go anywhere else, then the repair takes 1.5 hours. If you do a full maintenance audit on fx impact, then be patient and get ready to spend a lot of time.
- The gearbox is the number 1 weak point of this model; it is tiny, toy-like, dead, weak.
- The second weak point is a lot of “holes”
If you don’t have experience in repairs, I highly recommend giving it to a specialist; this is not a model that you can do yourself without any problems. Over time you get used to it and the excitement disappears.
photo below - Repaired fx impact:
Photo below - for caliber 5.5, a pressure of 125-130 atm of gear pressure is sufficient.
-for the 7th fx impact model, try with 150-160 atm, respectively.
The actual service life before the first breakdown is on average 2-3 years, then everything depends on who repaired it or tried to repair it.
- Do I recommend the FX Impact rifle for purchase? The answer is NO
. - Would I get FX Impact? The answer is NO
, too much fuss - 3 word description of FX Impact. The answer is complex, expensive, impractical.
- What would I do if someone gave it to me? The answer is that I would sell it for 2/3 of the price of a new one and forget about it.

Customer question
—
composite
flasks the Jaeger PCP ? There will be a weight saving of under 1 kg.
Answer
— These kinds of “upgrades” are asked extremely rarely, so I don’t keep them in stock.
There will be no weight savings of 1 kg, the original ones are not so heavy and the composite ones are not so weightless, the difference will be 600-700 grams.
The barrel sticks out strongly forward behind the flask, that is, the plug will not interfere, so if you want, you can stick in anything, even if the flask doesn’t fit right away - you can grind out an adapter and put in the flask that you want. I don’t see the point in doing this, because now no one has money anyway, everyone is trying to save money.

Customer question
— Regarding
the re-barrel
, do you install firearm barrels on
the Jaeger pcp
? Polygonal does not stabilize bullets well.
Answer
— I have experience in re-barreling, but pcp didn’t install other barrels on Yegeri specifically because he always managed it - he brought to mind the one that was already in place. Usually they shoot well anyway, but if there are still problems with accuracy, then first you need to try to improve the barrel that is standing. Because the re-barrel operation is complex and financially costly.
What is a gun barrel
on
pneumatics
. Some people lacking conscience and intelligence supply their clients with Beret gun barrels, which are too weakened for pneumatic shuttlecock bullets and the accuracy is very poor. They are trying to make money on people’s gullibility, so that the person seems to change the caliber, and get more money, because they take Beretovka ones cheaper than normal air blowers, and they put the difference in their pocket. I don’t deal with such nonsense and it’s important to me that the person is satisfied. I don't do work formally for show.
Maybe firearm barrels will be fine for full-bodied heifers, I didn’t try it - there was no need.
Regarding bullet stabilization
- it depends not only on the barrel, but also on the bullet, some will spin as they should, some won’t. When a person says “poorly stabilizes”, it means that the person is not happy with something, it is likely that the problem is not only in the barrel, but maybe in the bullets or the settings of the rifle. For example, excessive air consumption will cause deterioration in accuracy; someone will call this overstabilization or some other smart word, although in reality this may not be the case.
If the rifle shoots well and accurately
, in general, I don’t care how tightly the bullet is twisted or not twisted. And it’s not entirely clear how to accurately calculate this. You don’t hire huntsmen so that bullets can spin in flight at the speed you want, right? I'm a practitioner, you know? I don’t jerk off to formulas, I make them work and like them. Someone wants to spoil a lot of sheets of paper with formulas and calculations, and then measure their pussies with others - that’s their right.

Customer question
— How is the barrel attached to the Jaegers pcp? How many rubber bands are there in the barrel, two or one? (How is the barrel mounted on the Jaeger pcp?)
Answer
- On the Rokovsky ones (Russian Armory Yegeryah LLC) the barrel sits on a thread in the receiver and is tightened with a shiny locking nut - in the photo
it is clearly visible - “glitters”.
No one makes more than 1 rubber band in a trunk, you are confusing something. If there are rubber bands on the outer part of the barrel, then there are 2 of them, as it should be. There is always 1 piece inside the barrel to seal the rammer.
————-
Customer question
— My Jaeger pcp blows from the barrel in the place between the receiver and the cylinder, where the firing pin runs.
Answer
- It's blowing from a defective bypass seal, not from the barrel. At the factory, stupid people sometimes make the bypass 0.2-0.3mm lower than necessary, because of this there is blowing from the bypass when firing. Also, sometimes assemblers jam or damage the gasket during assembly, and then there will also be blowing.
In the photo below, the green arrow shows the gasket that came from the factory. On the left is carved by me.
In these cases, I sharpen my gasket from the same material, but the correct size, install it carefully, and the problem disappears.
If they had bought the Jaeger from me, this wouldn’t have happened. I keep an eye on this and if there is another problem, I fix it myself and immediately.
If there is blowing from the barrel - this also happens when boobies install an elastic band of the wrong size, it is solved by installing the correct elastic band - I have it, I install mine, check everything.
If you have a high opinion of “factory” quality, look at the photo below - here is the factory assembly:
In the Jaeger rifle, the pressure gauge was sealed with fum tape; of course, even this was done in one place.
This Jaeger rifle was brought in for modification, I’m taking it apart - a piece is sticking out, right, why do I need to carefully cut off the excess? So they pulled and okay, the dangling piece will eventually break off under the influence of powerful air currents and fly away either into the combat valve and lead to loss of tightness, or it will dangle inside the rifle..... Therefore, there is no need to associate the phrase “plugs”, but there is none. Therefore, the air comes out faster than it should, the air pressure does not slow down the piston as much, a sufficiently dense air cushion is not formed, and therefore the piston hits the wall of the compressor with enormous force, its speed is higher than expected, the pressure is created higher, the diesel effect occurs - the oil spontaneously ignites under high pressure, producing pops and high temperatures, the smell of burnt oil and smoke from the barrel and breech.
The piston cuff burns out and deteriorates, plus the impact itself sometimes leaves heavy marks on the end of the cuff. If you regularly shoot without a bullet, the cuff will fail and the compression will drop - and the power of the rifle will also disappear.
(The piston moves forward towards the barrel because it is pushed by the pre-compressed mainspring)
Modern fashion trends to stick Gas springs
or
Nitro springs
do NOT change the situation. It is still forbidden to dry-fire with PPP pneumatics. These springs provide more comfort and allow you to store the rifle in a loaded state without damaging the spring. Although only a very stupid person can engage in such nonsense. Why keep the rifle cocked for a long time? You either shoot or don't shoot.
Customer question
— Alexander, good afternoon, I’m considering options for purchasing a Cricket pcp,
I studied your site, this will be my first pneumatic, I was choosing between Cricket 6.35
and
FX Wildcat MK2
, I came to the conclusion that it is easier to find spare parts for a cricket, and we don’t officially sell FX.
Please tell me, besides the pump and bullets, what else will need to be purchased.
with uv.
Dmitriy. Answer
- Good afternoon, Dmitry.
The right choice, in which case Cricket 6.35
will greatly benefit in terms of service and ease of repair, including financial ones.
You can always turn to me for help and support. I can get any broken parts or fix yours. As a rule, nothing breaks in Crickets, you just need to do Tech on time. Maintenance - if you take a Sverchok rifle from me with modifications, then the price of maintenance is 2 times lower
than if you took it elsewhere and brought it to me for maintenance.
Regarding FX Wildcat MK2
, if something fails, then even if by some miracle you find the parts, the price tag on them is 2-3 times higher, you will have to run around looking for broken rifles in order to remove working components, this is a problem - finding them. The most hemorrhoidal part of the FX is the combat valves, I have them for some models, the price tag is crazy, I order them from Europe.
I don’t have it in stock for all models, because FX supplies unreliable combat valves that are similar in type, but differ in geometric dimensions. Since 2016 I don't order FX parts at all
because they cost an inappropriate amount of money and it’s better not to deal with them at all, and I don’t advise you.
If I have something, it’s leftovers, which I don’t want to replenish with considerable investments, especially considering the current purchasing power of the population and the situation in Russia. The exhaust is funny, there are a lot of hemorrhoids. Sorry, 5 valves comes out to half of someone's small salary, isn't that too much? It would be nice if the thing was worthwhile, but the price in this case is not justified
by anything other than the big name of the manufacturer. Reliability is much worse, the price is higher.
The FX Boss 7.62 valve will not fit on the FX Wildcat 5.5, although outwardly they seem to be the same - in fact, no, they brought it to me, I checked it. Finding this part is very difficult, it is unreliable. I sharpened the last one myself, because we couldn’t find it. I also redid the valve seat - no photos. The work is not very easy.
Tired Monsoon
I can only show you the valve I made for the FX Monsoon. Photo below:
It works, holds pressure, does not glitch. Much better than the original FX, which I just threw out because it was crap.
Better not mess with FX rifles
, if you just want to shoot and enjoy because they do not work for a long time, they are well beautifully made, but the resource is short and they are expensive. FX Airguns make good barrels - accurate, accurate, but I wouldn’t recommend buying the rifles themselves.
———
They always bring me Crickets from 2011
, here is a photo,
I do maintenance and DO NOT change a single part, they just don’t break
, parts can be restored at a reasonable price without running around, the combat valve is very reliable and failure is isolated cases, which I don’t even take into account because, as a rule, this is a manufacturing defect, and not a systemic problem associated with incorrect calculation of the valve, as on FX rifles where 1500 rounds can kill the valve due to normal wear and tear.
——
FX has a stuck fire valve problem
due to hardening in the receiver, the material is soft, the contact area is small, a strong impact is generated on a small area, sooner or later the valve jams and the rifle stops refueling -
when refueling, air leaves the barrel
.
———
What else do you need to buy?
In addition to the pump and bullets, any PCP pneumatic usually comes with:
- cleaning rod (always useful, 400-500 rubles)
- ballistol (300-350r)
- silicone grease (100-200r)
I have everything in stock, the prices are normal, the quality has been tested over the years, I use the same ones myself.
Ballistol
- for wood and external metal parts, you can also use it to clean the trunk
Silicone
- for rubber seals - inside the barrel and rifle, you can also lubricate the rubber bands on the shop, they will begin to dry out in 3-4 years. This is not the one sold in auto parts stores, it will not fit. The difference is that the additives in the “wrong” silicone detonate at high pressures and are not suitable in PCP pneumatics for working inside under pressure. If you are a smart person, then listen to me and won’t splash/smear anything inside. Using someone else's lubricant voids my warranty on the rubber bands.

Quackenbush rifle
In 2012, the American family concern for the production of air guns Quackenbush created its next brainchild, which broke all records among air sniper rifles in terms of power.
This Quackenbush LA Outlaw .458 is the most powerful large caliber sniper rifle in the world! Indeed, the caliber of the ammunition corresponds to about .459 inches, which is equal to 11.63 mm. At the beginning of the 20th century, the performance characteristics of Mosin rifles were considered very lethal like the Trekhleneyka, and today the Trekhlineika rifle never ceases to amaze athletes and shooting enthusiasts.
Quackenbush LA Outlaw .458
The type of the presented model of the PSP air rifle. Shooting from this device is carried out using air in special cylinders under high pressure. The air itself is supplied to the cylinders either from a 3,000 bar compressor, or is manually inflated by a pump.
The firing speed of ammunition due to such a mechanism can reach 223 m/s, while the firing power will correspond to more than 680 J. The cost of the model is as high as the speed of shots - from $3,000.
Dennis Quackenbush chose this calibration for his large-caliber rifle for a reason. It is designed for most samples of ready-made rifle cartridges. The same feature is characteristic of the previous model of the same manufacturer – Quackenbush 0.308.
In both cases, such samples of American rifles are popularly called “hellish things.” And many professional hunters, going after large prey, certainly have Quackenbush creations in their arsenal.

Device
Externally, the rifle looks impressive and beautiful. The stock is solid and can be made of plastic or wood. The barrel is steel.
Pistol-type grip with an adjustable rubber butt pad and a small slot for the thumb. There is also a recess on both sides of the handle for the thumb, with the plastic on the left side having a larger recess. The cheek of a plastic stock is also intended for right-handers: it has an indentation only on the left side (a wooden stock has a double-sided cheek).
There are small notches on the handle and fore-end on both sides for a secure grip. The forend also has the company logo.
On the right side there is a manual safety (above the trigger guard) and a cocking lever. There is a small recess on the forend for the lever handle. At the beginning of the barrel, a mount for a dovetail type OP (11 mm) is milled.
The drum (9-round) is inserted into a special recess on the receiver (which is located under the optical sight). The cartridge is sent into the barrel when the lever is cocked. The rammer is tubular.
Operating principle
PCP pneumatics are the most powerful (compared to gas cylinder and spring-piston) and modern technology. A shot in a weapon of this type is fired from the pressure of compressed air (nitrogen can also be used instead of air, but this solution is used less frequently).
The working medium (that is, air or nitrogen) is pumped into a cylinder (its capacity and internal pressure may vary). The cylinder can be removable or integral with the weapon. When you press the trigger, the bypass (also called the combat) valve opens, through which air escapes through the barrel, pushing the bullet out.
To maintain constant performance during a shot (power and speed of a bullet), a reducer is used, which reduces the pressure of the medium leaving the cylinder. Thus, until the pressure drops to the level maintained by the gearbox, each shot will be equally powerful. In this case (for the FX Boss model), the maximum pressure in the cylinder is about 240 atmospheres, and the pressure of the reducer is 160.
The disadvantages of pneumatics of this type include the relative high cost of the weapon, as well as the high cost and complexity of its maintenance and repair. Among the advantages - PCP models practically do not need internal modifications, and demonstrate the best indicators of accuracy, accuracy and range (among pneumatic weapons).
For shooting, 7.62 (or .30) caliber bullets are used. They are produced by the Czech company JSB. Previously, its weight was 2.9 grams, now it has been increased to 3.2.
PCP rifle design
Pneumatics with pre-pumping are not something new - pneumatic smoothbore guns with pre-pumping appeared back in 1600, and a full-fledged multi-shot PCP rifle of the Girardoni system even managed to be used by the Austrian rangers and fought with Napoleon.
Since then, the design has changed little: it is still based on a high-pressure reservoir, a trigger mechanism that controls the valve, and a barrel locked by a simple sliding bolt.
Among the modern innovations, we can note the speed adjustment screws on the strike group and the pressure in the gearbox, which allow you to control the energy of the shot, and, in fact, the very presence of the gearbox - the first PCP rifles were exclusively direct-flow.
Reducer or direct flow?
This is the first question new shooters ask. It is impossible to answer this unequivocally - the choice of one scheme or another depends on the tasks for which the rifle is purchased.
- Direct-flow scheme
provides the highest pressure at the moment of firing when the cylinder is full, but as the volume of gas in the tank decreases, it drops. This means that the speed of the bullet drops. Therefore, the first shots from a straight-through rifle will be extremely powerful, and then the pressure will gradually decrease to inoperative, unable to push the bullet out of the barrel. The total number of effective shots of such a rifle will be lower than that of a geared rifle.
- Gear circuit
Before firing, it collects gas from the reservoir into a storage chamber, so the bullet flies out with the specified pressure and speed. And the entire volume of gas is spent efficiently.
It may seem that the advantages of a gearbox make direct flow unnecessary, but this is not the case.
Firstly, the most powerful air rifles in the world are exclusively straight-through air rifles; the accumulating chamber is not capable of providing the pressure necessary to fire a 12.7 mm caliber bullet.
Secondly, the gearbox is a complex and capricious unit, which significantly increases its cost and requires special maintenance.
Thirdly, when there is a strong drop in the gearbox pressure, for example, with a sharp temperature change, the stability of the shot decreases - they say that the gearbox is “leaking”.
Therefore, if you are planning to hunt and are looking for a practical, inexpensive rifle that will take you “through thick and thin,” choose a straight shot rifle.
For sports, in order to place bullets one in one at a decent distance, rifles with a gearbox are better suited.
PCP pneumatic calibers
PCP rifles have a wide range of calibers to choose from like no other airgun. The most common in Russia:
- 4.5 mm (.177)
- the smallest caliber, PCP rifles are almost never found in it. Suitable for recreational shooting.
- 5.5 mm (.22)
— rifles that are suitable for sport and hunting small game — rodents, small birds — start with this caliber. It has good penetration ability, but the low weight of the bullet, on average up to 2.5 grams, gives low persistence. For long-distance shooting, you will have to use a rangefinder and carefully set vertical adjustments.
- 6.3 mm (.25)
- a hunting caliber that allows you to hunt small ungulates and even predators. The effective firing range with it exceeds 100 meters.
- 7.62 mm (.30)
- the largest caliber for serial weapons that are on sale in Russia. Such a bullet has serious energy, close to small-caliber firearms. But, unlike small guns, due to the greater mass of the bullet, such pneumatics have a much greater stopping effect.
Important! Hunting with pneumatics in Russia is allowed only for squirrel, flying squirrel, doves, hazel grouse and crow, and weapons for such hunting should not exceed a power of 25 J and be registered according to all the rules in accordance with Federal Law 150 “On Weapons”.
Bullpup or traditional layout?
Perhaps no other category of weapon is produced in so many bullpup configurations, when the trigger is placed in front of the bolt group and magazine. In the case of pneumatics, this is not such a bad solution, since all the main disadvantages of a bullpup are leveled out: there is no need to come up with mechanisms for extracting cartridges, the shot does not stun the shooter, and the center of gravity shifted to the butt is balanced by a heavy high-pressure reservoir. The result is a very compact, accurate and powerful weapon that is easy to transport and convenient to shoot in a confined space, such as from a car.
But the classic layouts are a couple of hundred grams lighter due to the absence of a support rail, they have a longer aiming line, quick release, and most importantly, they can be reloaded without taking your eyes off the sight and without changing the tab, which can be done in the case of a bullpup problematic.
Which optics should you choose?
When choosing optics, keep in mind that the FX Boss mount type is dovetail. This option allows you to move the sight along the bar, adjusting its position to suit you.
Due to the serious range, it is important to choose high magnification sights with the ability to adjust it (so that you can adjust the optics for both 30-meter and 120-meter distances).
As for the second main indicator - the diameter of the objective lens - it should be selected based on the conditions under which you plan to shoot. The higher this value, the better the optics will “behave” in the twilight: a larger amount of light will pass through a large-diameter lens, which means the shooter will see the image better (brighter and lighter).
