Hatsan 125: a detailed review of Turkish hunting pneumatics

The Hatsan 125 air rifle is the most popular spring-piston air rifle in our country. The high popularity of the Hatsan 125 rifle is explained by its high power, firing range, solid appearance and ease of shooting from it. The rifle can be used for training and recreational target shooting. The Hatsan 125 rifle is produced at a Turkish factory in Izmir. The Hatsan 125 rifle has one of the best price-quality ratios on the market.

Manufacturer

Turkish manufacturer Hatsan Arms Company has been producing firearms and air guns since 1976 - this can only be said about the company's experience and unique approach to the development and creation of weapons. Using non-standard approaches to the production of components, as well as setting high demands on the supplied raw materials, Hatsan Arms Company brings to life its main rule - Serious. Solid. Impact (Seriousness, Solidity, Influence).

This is what allowed the once small family enterprise to grow into a real market giant, supplying its products to 95 countries.

Description of the Hatsan 125 air rifle

Externally, the rifle is a classic single-shot “breaker” with a rifled barrel, produced in three calibers – 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 mm. The barrel length in all cases is 450 mm, which allows the ammunition to be launched with a high initial velocity. Loading, as well as cocking the spring, is carried out when the barrel is broken; the ammunition is inserted into the breech of the barrel.

How is the Hatsan 125 rifle loaded?

Unlike firearms and more expensive air rifles, the Hatsan 125 air rifle has a polymer stock, butt and handle - this was done both to reduce the cost of production and to lighten the overall weight of the weapon. Another important advantage will be the corrugation on the fore-end and handle for a better grip. To absorb recoil when firing, a Triopad shock-absorbing pad is mounted on the butt. There may be three such pads in a set - all have different levels of softness.

The entire design of the rifle is aimed at maximum comfort for the shooter - even making it easier to reload the weapon is taken into account. To do this, a plastic muzzle is installed on the barrel, providing a comfortable grip for breaking the barrel. For the safety of the shooter and those around him, a mechanical safety is installed on the barrel, when activated, a shot is impossible even if the rifle is dropped onto concrete from a considerable height.

The Hatsan 125 sights deserve special praise - for ease of sight adjustment, both vertical and horizontal micrometric adjustments are installed. As for the front sight, it is of an open type, like the rear sight, equipped with Truglo fiber optic tubes for ease of aiming in the twilight.

Purpose of the Hatsan 125 air rifle

Initially, this weapon was developed for commercial hunting of small game, but the high initial speed of the bullet, as well as the power of the shot, which allows the weapon to fall into the class of magnum rifles, also allows for bird hunting.

Hatsan 125 with optical sight

The rifle is unpretentious to ammunition - it can shoot both lightweight and full-weight bullets. This factor allows you to use the rifle as a training weapon that is inexpensive to purchase and cheap in terms of bullet costs.

Tuning and upgrading the rifle

To improve the quality of shooting, many owners of the Khatsan 125 rifle are upgrading it. In most cases, rifle tuning comes down to two main changes:

  • Replacing a standard mechanical coil spring with a higher capacity spring? Or a gas spring.
  • Installing the optical sight on the mount provided for it on the rifle.

Equipment

The standard package includes a spartan kit - a packaging box, a rifle and instructions for use. However, there is also an expanded set on the market - it includes a rifle, spare springs, as well as three Triopad attachments (one already on the butt, two more separately) with varying degrees of softness. The kit also includes a hex wrench necessary for disassembling and servicing the rifle.

Hatsan 125 equipment

The presence of the Spartan set is explained by one of the main principles of the company - only weapons and nothing else. This approach is not always fair for those who want to get maximum pleasure from using a weapon.

Standard equipment

As indicated, in order to increase the productive power of the rifle, in addition to the weapon itself, the kit includes an additional spring.

Standard equipment Hatsan

The rifle itself is supplied with a preservative lubricant, which must be removed before use, and then applied with a new, fresh one, in order to avoid compromising the integrity of the product both inside and outside.

It is also worth noting popular models of domestic buyers, namely the IZH 61 MR 61 air rifle and the Lobaev hunting rifle.

Why Hatsan 125

The first and main reason why you should pay attention to this rifle is the unsurpassed quality of production in this price segment. For forty-five years, the family business Hatsan Arms Company has specialized only in the production of weapons, and being a family business, it respects the traditions of the company.

The second reason is the accuracy of the shot - a trained shooter can hit a target at a distance of up to 100 meters. However, the most effective shooting is achieved at a distance no higher than 50.

The third and most important reason is design reliability and safety. Being an ordinary “breaker”, the rifle is structurally simple even for the average user. And understanding the main principle of any weapon - the simpler, the more reliable, we can safely consider this rifle to be very reliable in economic hands. That is, if you properly care for the rifle, it will not let you down for a long time.

How to choose optics

Having such a rifle in your arsenal, it would be a sin not to try your hand at precision shooting. And it’s unlikely to be possible to do this without reliable optics. It’s definitely not worth buying simple optics for 10-15 dollars.

The point here is this. The standard connector for mounting optics is well suited for attaching powerful lenses. But here it is better to read the reviews of hunters who use not only firearms, but also air rifles in hunting. That’s exactly what they advise to start looking at scopes with a 4x32 magnification. The cost of such optics is quite comparable to the price of a middle-class rifle, but the price of such optics for the 125 will be even higher.

Not only the popular BSA and TASCO sights are recommended for installation; it is also worth paying attention to domestic tubes and sights made in Belarus.

But for installation it is recommended to use standard brackets of branded sights. Then you can try shooting at 75 meters.

The device and design of the rifle

Hatsan 125 is a classic single-shot rifle, spring-piston type. When the trigger is pressed, a coiled mechanical spring moves the piston, creating excess pressure in the charging chamber and thereby expelling the bullet.

When the barrel is broken, a lever attached to it pulls the piston back, thereby compressing the spring. The hook on the piston moves the trigger sear, thereby cocking the rifle. After returning the barrel to the firing position, the rifle is ready to fire.

The main element that ensures a smooth trigger is the Quattro Trigger (literally translated as “four triggers”) - a system in which the trigger remains free, while cocking occurs due to one of the three sears, thus not connecting the spring to the trigger.

Increasing rifle power by replacing the spring

Many rifle owners either immediately after purchase or after some time increase the power of the rifle by replacing the spring with a more powerful mechanical coil spring or gas spring.

The mechanical coil spring of the Hatsan 125 rifle begins to shrink after several hundred shots, and after 1000-1200 shots it becomes completely sluggish, the power of the rifle decreases, and the initial speed of the bullet decreases to 250 or even 200 meters per second. The best way to increase the power of a rifle is to install a gas spring.

A gas spring uses energy from gas compression. When the barrel breaks, the piston compresses the gas in the cylinder. During the shot, the gas in the cylinder presses on the piston, creating the energy of the shot. Installing a gas spring on a rifle increases the range of the shot, increases the speed of the bullet, reduces recoil and simplifies the process of cocking the rifle. Installing a gas spring on a rifle is not very difficult; it can be done either in a store that sells pneumatics or at home. Many owners of Hatsan 125 rifles, when replacing a mechanical spring with a gas one, not only change the spring itself, but also chamfer the muzzle of the barrel, change the cuff and o-rings, and polish the piston and cylinder.

Sights

The rifle is equipped with standard mechanical sighting devices - front and rear sights. The front sight is a rigidly fixed fiber cord with a diameter of 1.5 millimeters, green. The rear sight is classic, with two red fiber-optic fibers installed on it, adjustable in two planes - vertical and horizontal. Adjustable using mechanical adjustments mounted on the rear sight.

Adjusting the Hatsan 125 sight

This combination of colors is intended for more convenient aiming in the dark. But it also helps during the day - the contrast of the colored fibers stands out against any background and makes aiming easier.

Namushnik and front sight Hatsan 125

Fiber optic fibers, unlike tritium elements, are cheaper and safer for the owner - they are non-toxic and do not emit any radiation. And the source of their recharge is any light - fed with light energy, fiber-optic fiber is capable of maintaining the illumination of sighting devices for several hours.

Some modifications of the rifle allow you to install an 11 or 27 mm standard optical sight. More details about optical sights will be discussed below.

Modifications

In fact, the Hatsan mod 125 is not just one, but a whole family of air rifle models, each of which has some slight differences from the others. Technically, they are all the same, the only difference is in the comfort of use.

Hatsan 125 sniper

A model of an air rifle equipped with a sound absorber to reduce noise when fired. In addition, the rifle is equipped with an adjustable cheek rest, ergonomic pads for a comfortable grip and a pistol grip. But the most important thing is a specially made barrel, which helps make the most accurate shot and a mount for an optical sight. The “sniper” model is also equipped with a lightweight bipod. Available in several color variations.

Hatsan 125 at rest

Hatsan 125TH

One of the most common rifle models on the market. It differs from the others in that it is produced with a semi-pistol grip that smoothly flows into the butt; for a better grip, a hole is made in the butt body for the thumb. It is produced with a factory mount for an optical sight, but is not equipped with a bipod. Available in several color variations.

Hatsan 125MW

It is considered one of the “expensive-looking” models, in fact, differing only in walnut coloring - this is the only difference from the basic model 125. It has a plastic stock and butt, is equipped with a pistol grip and a mount for an optical sight. Inherits all the characteristics of the base model.

Hatsan 125TH MW

Modification of the 125TH model with a semi-pistol grip. The only modification that distinguishes it from the 125TH model is the “walnut” coloring; no other changes were made. Positioned for hunters who do not like standard weapon colors. No structural changes were made.

Hatsan 125 Camo

Basic model of a pneumatic "fracture", painted in "forest" camouflage. Ideal for hunters who hunt small animals - this color allows them to blend in with the terrain as much as possible. Otherwise, the rifle does not have any design changes from the base model.

Shooting

It is advisable to test new air guns. You can shoot the Hatsan 125 at a shooting range, on a training ground or in the forest. Shooting in the country and in the city is prohibited by law. For zeroing, you need several cardboard targets measuring 50x50 cm. You can use shoe or food boxes as a target. Targets are installed vertically at different distances (5-10-20-50 meters). During the test, the accuracy of fire is checked at a certain distance.

How to shoot the Hatsan 125 correctly:

  • break the trunk;
  • insert one lead bullet;
  • return the barrel to its original position;
  • grab the handle with your right hand;
  • place the palm of your left hand under the forend;
  • raise the rifle to shoulder level;

  • move the sight away from the eye to a distance of 15-25 cm;
  • rest the buttplate of the butt against your right shoulder;
  • point the barrel at the target;
  • release the fuse;
  • take aim;
  • align the front sight with the middle of the sight slot (the top of the front sight should not extend beyond the top of the rear sight);
  • shoot at the top of the target.

The power of the shot depends on the caliber and weight (appearance) of the projectile. Light lead bullets fly further and hit the target more accurately. Heavy projectiles penetrate deeper into the target. For zeroing, it is advisable to take several sets of bullets of different weights, but of the same caliber.

Disassembling and cleaning Hatsan 125

After each use of an air rifle, it must be cleaned - any small speck can cause either a slowdown in the shot or its complete impossibility. It’s elementary - a bullet may get stuck in the table and you won’t be able to get it out without a cleaning rod. But we must not forget about prevention before long-term storage of pneumatics.

The disassembly process is described in detail in the following video:

Disassembly and assembly of HATSAN 125 is the best option.

Depreservation

Depreservation must be carried out after removing the weapon from the box, immediately before use. The thing is that the rifle’s mechanisms are generously coated with weapons-grade lubricant at the factory to protect the mechanism from corrosion and contamination. It is also recommended to coat the internal mechanisms with a thick layer of lubricant before long-term storage (for example, between hunting seasons).

Depreservation involves disassembling the rifle, cleaning it from excess grease and subsequent reassembly, bringing the rifle back to normal combat (fine-tuning the sights). Due to excessive lubrication, the rifle may lose its fighting qualities.

The depreservation process occurs as follows:

  1. Disassemble the rifle.
  2. Remove a layer of sticky grease from all accessible parts of the rifle, including the gas piston and compressor.
  3. Clean the barrel using nylon brushes.
  4. Once you've finished cleaning, coat the mechanisms with a thin layer of gun lube.
  5. Reassemble the rifle to its original condition
  6. Check the functionality of the mechanisms and carry out shooting.

If for some reason you are afraid or do not want to clean your weapon from grease, leave this work to professionals - usually every store has contact details for weapons workshops.

Never use a metal cleaning rod to clean the barrel - it can damage the rifling of the barrel and reduce the combat characteristics of the weapon!

Repair and replacement of parts

The beauty of air guns is that they can be easily maintained at home, without any complex tools, the main thing is to have the necessary spare parts and a little time. It is important to follow only the main rule - mandatory lubrication of parts after replacement, this is the only way to guarantee the full functionality of the air rifle.

Despite the ease of maintenance, it is better for people who do not have experience working with tools not to try to carry out maintenance and repairs on their own - for this, there are various workshops that can carry out the work for a small fee.

Complete assembly of trigger for HATSAN 125

Complete assembly of the trigger on the Hatsan 125 rifle is a very labor-intensive and rather painstaking procedure that requires patience and care. This type of work does not forgive mistakes. And we're not even talking about the fact that some parts may be damaged in the process. It’s just that if you assemble the system incorrectly and then fire a shot, there is a high probability that the rifle will become unusable. Therefore, just as in the previous case, we recommend following our instructions:

Step 1 - install two sears

These parts are held on a spring, which is not removed during complete disassembly, so installing them back into the trigger can be very problematic. However, for convenience, you can use tweezers or any other thin instrument that will allow you to fix the position of one sear while the other is being installed.

Step 2 - install the 3 main sear pins

The good news is that these parts are interchangeable, so it won’t be too difficult for you to install them in the trigger housing. As with disassembly, you can use an awl for this purpose, but if you have a screwdriver with a magnetized tip, it will serve you much better.

Step 3 – wrap the pins with tape

This is not necessary, but many professional gunsmiths use this life hack. The thing is that the pins tend to fall out during further assembly, so it would be a good idea to secure them with transparent tape or electrical tape - whichever is convenient for you.

Step 4 - install the groove sear

It is not difficult to distinguish this part - only it has a hole for a spring, as well as two grooves intended for fastening. It is necessary to position the groove sear so that the hole for the grooves coincides with the holes in the trigger box. For additional fixation, we wrap the part with tape.

Step 5 - installing the spring and limiter

This must be done in such a way that one edge of the springs falls into the mouth of the newly installed sear, and the other is located on the small protrusion of the limiter. We press the limiter from above, aligning the holes, and then install a small pin.

Step 6 - remove the tape on the groove sear

Once the spring with stop is attached to the firing mechanism, there is no need for additional restraint, so the cattle can be removed. However, this only applies to the piece that holds the groove sear. The tape on the pins must remain intact.

Step 7 - Trigger Installation

We apply the trigger to the trigger box, aligning both holes. After this, you need to take the thinnest pin and place it inside. We tie the new pin with tape so that it does not fall out. Now you can remove those pieces of electrical tape that were holding other fastening parts.

Step 8 - installing the spring pin

A fairly simple, but very important part of the assembly, since it is quite easy to damage a small spring. Once the metal piece is placed inside the housing, it is recommended to secure it with a small nut. Be careful when twisting so that it does not fly away and get lost!

The USM assembly procedure is almost complete. All that remains is to place the trigger mechanism back in the receiver. First, we install the fuse strip, after which we place the trigger in its place. Install the remaining pins and remove a piece of tape. Congratulations, you were able to put the trigger back together and can now repeat the procedure if necessary.

Is it possible to upgrade the Hatsan mod 125 rifle

Yes, thanks to the common shape of the handle and forend, the rifle allows you to customize the body to suit your needs. However, the most common air rifle upgrades are:

  • Installation of an optical sight - not supported by all modifications; this requires a standard mount on the rifle barrel;
  • Installing a gas spring instead of a mechanical one reduces recoil and adds several tens of Joules to the shot power;
  • Installing a shot suppressor allows you to fire at the bird. The fact is that when hunting a bird, a loud shot from a pneumatic gun can cause a flock to take wing, and this is fraught with loss of prey - the Hatsan 125 does not allow instant reloading;

Selection and installation of an optical sight

The manufacturer offers several variations of optical sights to choose from, but sometimes it is not possible to find them on the open market. Because of this, stores may offer analogues that are suitable for fastenings, but not suitable for the rifle in terms of shot power - yes, this is the first parameter that should be taken into account.

Optical sight for Hatsan 125

For example, the Russian-made VOMZ “Pilad” 4x32 mm optical sight performs very well - it does not go astray when fired even from more powerful rifles and shotguns, and with proper dexterity the shooter can hit targets at a distance of up to 100 meters.

When choosing a scope, consider several options, but do not rush to buy the latest and most functional model - often it will not be of any use.

Replacing the base spring with a gas one

The factory-installed spring is specially weakened for two purposes - to facilitate reloading and to “put” the rifle itself within the 7.5 J limit. A rifle with such a spring is suitable for training, for hunting small game (usually rodents - gophers, squirrels), however you will have to work hard to get within five to ten meters of them. But it is no longer possible to hunt a bird with such a spring - there is not enough power.

It is in order to increase the power of the shot that the spring is replaced - even though it requires a little more effort to reload the weapon, the power of the shot can reach 36 J. And this already allows you to hunt both rodents and birds - both the shot range and lethality for the animal.

Disassembly

Partial disassembly of the Hatsan 125, which is usually sufficient for the average user, is carried out in the following sequence:

  • The screws that secure the stock are unscrewed. Their number is five.
  • The stock is separated from the rifle body.
  • The screw of the fuse axis is unscrewed.
  • The screw intended to secure the trigger mechanism is unscrewed.
  • The spring is released, which protects the rifle from an accidental shot.
  • The sear axis is removed.
  • The back pin is removed.
  • The spring and piston are taken out.

Depreservation

All samples of Turkish weapons are generously filled with lubricant. If you decide to shoot with it immediately after purchasing a rifle, then the presence of excess lubrication will almost immediately lead to failure of the spring and cuff . To prevent this phenomenon, the Hatsan 125 rifle needs to be reactivated. This process involves disassembling the rifle, removing excess lubricant, installing a weighting agent and the original spring.

After disassembly, you need to remove the piston and wipe it with a clean and dry cloth. The same should be done with the compressor. After this, you need to apply your own lubricant to these parts. You can use silicone lubricant or one of the special varieties that are available in abundance at any gun store. The lubricant will cover the surfaces with a thin layer. After this, assembly is carried out in the reverse order and the first shooting of the Hatsan 125 air rifle without optics is carried out.

Disassembly and assembly of the Hatsan 125 rifle:

Replacing the base spring with a gas one

The gas spring, which is installed on the rifle, uses the energy of compressed gas. When the weapon is cocked, the piston compresses the gas that fills the cylinder. When a shot is fired, the piston goes back, putting all the force into the energy of the shot. The gas spring significantly reduces recoil and makes it easier to cock the rifle. To install it, you need to partially disassemble the Hatsan 125, remove the mechanical spring and install a gas piston in its place.

What should you pay attention to when repairing air guns? Replacement of the main parts, the base spring with a gas one, re-preservation, cleaning and lubrication, trigger, straightening the barrel, replacing the pneumatic cylinder and more. Advantages and disadvantages of the Hatsan 125 rifle

High shot power and bullet speed

High accuracy - a zeroed rifle gives a deviation from the average point of impact of no more than 5 mm

Solid appearance

Widely customizable grip ergonomics parameters

Stock for modernization

Good value for money

Strong recoil can cause damage to an untrained shooter - it is possible to suffer both a bruised finger and a cut eyebrow when installing an optical sight

High requirements for the installed “optics” - it is necessary to select sights suitable for powerful rifles, and also install them on a rigid bracket

Tight rifle cocking mechanism - requires a lot of effort to reload

A weighted barrel requires more shooting for beginners - a heavy barrel takes some getting used to, especially when shooting handheld

The weight of the rifle is too large for use by women and children

Flaws

With all the advantages that the rifle has, it also has some disadvantages:

  • Heavy Recoil - The rifle's large compressor and spring-piston operating principle result in fairly strong recoil, which often results in a strong and painful blow to the finger, as well as a "sniper injury", that is, a broken eyebrow of the rifle owner.
  • The need for a high-quality optical sight that can withstand the strong recoil of a rifle. A rigid monoblock should be used to mount the sight; the optical sight must be able to withstand strong recoil.
  • Heavy weight of the rifle - due to its heavy weight, the rifle is not well suited for recreational shooting for children and women.
  • Breaking the barrel to cock and load a rifle requires a lot of physical effort.
  • The mechanical coil spring shrinks after several hundred shots, so many rifle owners replace it with a gas spring.
  • The large size of the rifle and the balance on the barrel reduce the maneuverability and usability of the rifle.

Rifle zeroing

It is recommended to zero the Hatsan after assembly with Diabolo bullets. Also, for zeroing, it is necessary to use a special zeroing machine that tightly holds the rifle and prevents it from moving when fired - this rule is valid for zeroing both with and without an optical sight.

Zeroing is carried out in a series of five shots, and first the sight is aligned vertically, then horizontally.

Keep in mind that when firing a series of shots, the spring weakens somewhat from shot to shot - this is a standard problem with all spring-piston rifles. It is also necessary to especially carefully load the weapon in the machine, not allowing it to move if the barrel is broken.

Selection and installation of an optical sight

Most owners of the Hatsan 125 rifle install an optical sight on it. According to experienced pneumatic enthusiasts, a 4x32 optical sight for the Hatsan 125 rifle will be quite sufficient. The Hatsan 125 rifle has great power and strong recoil, so you only need to purchase a high-quality scope that can withstand such recoil. The optical sight should be installed on a monoblock bracket.

Test of bullet speed and accuracy of fire

Having carried out several series of shots with different bullets, the manufacturer claims an average bullet flight speed (at the moment it leaves the barrel) of 320-380 meters per second - this is approximately comparable to the flight speed of a bullet fired from a Makarov pistol. Bullet power tests are also impressive - the average muzzle energy is set at around 33 J.

For the accuracy test, the editors used a target for firing a pistol at a distance of ten meters, the test itself was carried out at a distance of 25 meters. Moreover, all hits fit into a circle with a diameter of 4 centimeters - a decent indicator for an air rifle with light bullets weighing about one gram.

Main pros and cons

In a market with an abundance of modifications and types of rifles, Hatsan 125 and Hatsan 125 TH have long occupied one of the leading positions in the segment of powerful spring-piston rifles in an affordable price class.

The weapon gained popularity among owners due to several factors:

  • Huge shot power and high initial bullet speed, almost comparable to a Makarov pistol;
  • Correct ergonomics of the stock, distribution of masses of the butt, receiver and barrel;
  • The Turkish air gun has a decent appearance, it really is a weapon;
  • Maintainability – large selection of parts and spare parts;
  • We must pay tribute to such a factor as the possibility of modernization; the Turks do not skimp and make everything from weapons-grade steel.

From the point of view of the shooter, it is worth noting that the rifle is omnivorous - for it there is no difference in the mass of the bullet and it digests 0.28 grams and 1.6 grams and delivers it exactly to the target.

The maximum range of a bullet fired from the barrel in a series of 5 shots weighing 0.68 grams is 127 meters on the chest target No. 4 with circles.

Pneumatic weapons with a conventional coil spring provide high accuracy of fire at a standard 25 meters in a series of 5 shots with a dispersion of only 3 mm. For conditions of 50 meters it increases slightly to 5 mm.

Effective firing range 25-75 meters. In this case, the spring, when firing 500-650 shots from the beginning of operation and a series of 50 shots, produces 32-29 joules. A more powerful modification of the 125, the TH model with a reinforced gas spring, produces even more outstanding performance, reaching up to 36 joules.

Alas, there are also disadvantages:

  • Pneumatics with such power do not play well with optics. More precisely, it is not at all friendly if you require highly accurate results and series. A standard mount for consumer goods will not work; here you need to use a rigid monoblock and optics corresponding to the magnum class.
  • The Hatsan 125 is truly a weapon, and it weighs the same, and the recoil is serious. But for children’s entertainment it’s better not to take it, it’s heavy and uncomfortable, the weight of the barrel doesn’t allow you to hold the weapon even on a pillow, and what can we say about shooting with your hands.
  • Another inconvenience is associated with the use of a bipod; a powerful spring and a large barrel diameter for a pneumatic make such shooting a short-lived entertainment. If you want to get noticeable play in the barrel, then you can try, but before that you still need to think about whether it’s worth starting?
