Multi-compression rifles: review, features

In modern specialized stores, multi-compression rifles are presented in a wide range from different manufacturers and countries. Weapons have several specialized areas (recreational, training shooting, airsoft, hunting). Beginner users sometimes do not know how to choose the right modification. This is not surprising, especially if the gun is chosen for hunting or another hobby that is part of a person’s life. The choice of such equipment should be approached carefully, having studied the characteristics of the product and consumer reviews about it.

Choosing a rifle for a beginner

In our time of high technology, many people live according to a home-work schedule.
A person increasingly needs to be distracted, to distance himself from problems, to forget for a while. A hobby helps a lot with this and everyone finds something to their liking, especially since this is not a problem, because the service market today offers a lot of entertainment. However, there are activities, such as shooting or fishing, that are popular at all times, and they do not lose their relevance today. This can be either simple target shooting or hunting. In any case, this is a great way to escape from everyday worries and spend your free time with interest. And so, once again, sitting at the computer, you decide to diversify your leisure time by purchasing an air rifle. It’s good to have an experienced shooter or gunsmith nearby who will advise and select a rifle in accordance with the needs of the future athlete. And if not, some educational information for beginners is given below.

When faced with the problem of choosing a rifle, you must first determine the criteria for yourself:

  • design, caliber (our article discusses 4.5 mm caliber);
  • for what purpose and how often will it be used;
  • budget.

First, let's look at the variety of pneumatic weapon systems. The main difference is the method of gas compression, which in turn affects the bullet. In modern pneumatics, air pressure is created when the rifle is cocked, or compressed (liquefied) gas from a cylinder is used.

The following pneumatic weapon systems are distinguished:

  • spring-piston (PPP);
  • multicompression (MC);
  • with pre-pumping (PCP – pre-charged pneumatics).
  • CO2 rifles;

Let's look at each of them in more detail.

Criterias of choice

The first characteristic you should pay attention to when choosing a multi-compression rifle is the caliber. In the class of weapons under consideration, three options are popular: 4.5/5.5/6.35 mm. The first issue is aimed at training and recreational shooting. The caliber is considered the safest, suitable for use in the country or in nature.

It must be remembered that even low-power weapons are dangerous. The 5.5 mm caliber allows you to hunt small animals and birds. For duck, hare and similar animals use 6.5 caliber. When choosing a model for hunting or fishing, you must take into account the power of the gun. The price of a multi-compression rifle directly depends on this parameter. For target shooting, this indicator does not play a special role.

Review of multi-compression air rifles

In an extended review, we will look at the two most popular brands. Let's start with the Crosman M-417 model. Characteristics:

  • material of manufacture 2014 plastic;
  • stem part - metal;
  • charge configuration - pump internal to the receiver casing (4-7 pumping);
  • principle of operation - supply of charges using a bolt simulator, single firing;
  • type of ammunition - metal balls or lead bullets 4.5 mm;
  • magazines - a clip for five bullets and a compartment for 350 balls;
  • sights - adjustable, removable type;
  • type of fuse - push-button manual device;
  • accuracy indicator - high;
  • rate of fire - 178 or 195 m/s.

The parts of the weapon fit perfectly together, there are no sagging or burrs. When held tightly, the plastic at the connection points does not creak. The housing has holes for mounting screws. The M-417 modification looks like the American Colt M-4 assault rifle. The main differences are modified sighting devices, the absence of a handle for transportation and a shortened magazine.

The advantages of the weapon in question include:

  • the ability to fire not only balls, but also lead bullets;
  • the use of a separate gas tank and an additional pump is not required;
  • decent capacity of the compartment for balls;
  • high accuracy and precision.

Among the disadvantages are the high price, the appearance of plastic, the lack of automatic supply of charges, and several manipulations before each salvo.

PCP air guns

The top of the development of pneumatics is pneumatic weapons with pre-pumping (Pre-Charged Pneumatics), or more simply PCP.

Air is pumped into the tank in advance using a compressor or a cylinder with a filling station. Unlike previous models, the PCP can fire several powerful shots at once from pre-pumping (depending on the 30-150 model). PCP air guns are divided into:

  • Direct-flow - air from the tank, when dosing the combat valve, is immediately supplied to the barrel. With each shot, the pressure drops, speed and accuracy decrease. To monitor the residual pressure in the tank and make adjustments, owners use pressure gauges on the tank. More than suitable for hunting and recreational shooting.
  • Gearbox - a gas reducer is installed on the way to the barrel, which ensures stable gas pressure. The pressure in a special tank is lower than in the general one. When the pressure in the common tank drops below the level behind the gearbox, the rifle begins to operate as a forward flow.

With pre-pumping (PCP – pre-charged pneumatics)

Pre-pumping (PCP) system design

This type of rifle is equipped with a cylinder into which high-pressure gas (above 200 atm) is pumped. To fill the cylinder, a compressor, manual pumping or stationary large-capacity cylinders are used.

PCP circuits are used in the production of expensive and accurate sporting rifles. Using a reducer to maintain constant pressure in the working chamber allows for the most effective shooting.

When choosing rifles, you must also consider the following factors:

  1. The cheaper the rifle, the more experienced the buyer (shooter) should be, because... cheap things are rarely good, and to find this rare good copy, you need to be well versed in the theoretical part;
  2. If you choose a budget option, then it is advisable to find a gunsmith who could first look at it and, if necessary, bring the rifle to the level you want.

As for the theory, while in a gun store you need to pay attention to the barrel. The accuracy of the rifle almost entirely depends on the quality of the barrel. To do this, you need to carefully examine:

  • The breech (the place where the bullet is inserted) - make sure that there is a small chamfer (if it is provided by the manufacturer, compare several rifles to find out), so that the bullet, when sitting on the rifling, does not wrinkle;
  • The end of the barrel must have a high-quality chamfer (if it is provided by the manufacturer, compare several rifles to find out). If the chamfer is bad or does not exist at all, then the bullet will come off the rifling unevenly and there can be no talk of any good accuracy.

What else should you pay attention to?

Another important parameter is the weight of the weapon. It affects the comfort of shooting and the accuracy of firing. Beginner users who decide to buy a multi-compression rifle need to take into account the fact that the smaller the mass of the model, the stronger the vibration during the salvo. Heavy weight leads to fatigue of the shooter when moving for a long time. Therefore, for shooting at a shooting range from a rest, the heavy version is quite suitable, and it is better to fire from the hands using lightweight modifications.

If the rifle is operated primarily from cover or a specific confined area, the weight of the weapon is not particularly important. In this case, attention should be paid to the charging method. A multi-charge model would be more appropriate here.

Recommendations for using air multi-compression rifles

The fundamental recommendation for every multi-compression rifle is constant care of all elements. The main element that needs care is the gun barrel.

It is better to carry out such manipulation after shooting 200 ammunition. This will have a positive impact on maintaining high firing accuracy and range.

Our online store sells all the equipment necessary for cleaning the barrel. These include cleaning rods, brushes, powder puffs and gun oil. You can use it to lubricate the inner surface after using a brush.

It is better to shoot from pneumatics using lead bullets or steel balls with a caliber of 4.5 millimeters. The caliber is very common, and acquiring it will not be difficult.

Single firing mode involves cocking the firing mechanism after each shot.

An aimed shot is facilitated by open sights in the form of a front sight and rear sight. To increase accuracy, you can install optics or a collimator using a Dovetail and Weaver strap.

Peculiarities

Multi-compression air rifles have a certain advantage over their spring counterparts. Models of the PP type have a heavy piston weighing up to 200 grams, the sudden movement of which at the moment of firing negatively affects the quality of shooting. On the other hand, the loading process with air pumping before a salvo may not suit some users. In addition, multicompression is more difficult to operate and repair.

The weapon in question is a neat mechanism with good aiming devices. A high-precision small-caliber shotgun capable of hitting small game and rodents. Domestic gunsmiths are not encouraging in this class. The only production copy of the VKP-16 was not widely used.

Compression weapon

According to the diagram shown, a piston, driven by a lever, increases the pressure in the reservoir. Pulling the trigger opens the firing valve and gas expands into the barrel. The key difference from the next type is that the lever is cocked only once, which is due to the internal design.

The known samples on the market are mainly represented by compression pneumatic pistols; rifles are still more profitable to make using other designs. Air injection, as a rule, occurs here using a special lever located under the barrel. But there are also exceptions.

Gamo PR-45

Just an exception to the previous rule. The Spaniards chose to keep the combat look of the pistol, but use a compression design - the bolt acts as a lever. As a result, among the compression boots we got something average in orientation and low in price. The pistol cannot be classified as a hunting pistol due to its low power (initial shot speed - 120 m/s half a gram), it is not an entertaining pistol - only one shot per charge, it is not a sports pistol - it does not have the excellent accuracy of pumped air pistols. Something in between, but with a completely combative look.

What does accuracy depend on?

Accuracy greatly depends on the quality of the barrel; special attention is paid to the breech and the end of the barrel. There should be a slight chamfer in the breech where the charge is inserted. It is needed so that the bullet does not wrinkle as it moves along the rifling.

There should also be a chamfer at the end of the barrel, indicating good quality of the rifle. Otherwise, the bullet comes off the rifling unevenly, which does not provide the required accuracy. Some factory or home-made multi-compression rifles do not have a chamfer initially, which indicates its low quality and poor accuracy. Therefore, when purchasing a weapon, you must inspect it carefully. As for the type of guns in question, they allow the shooter to independently adjust the power of the volley. Among the disadvantages is the low starting speed.

1 Muzzle energy

- the initial kinetic energy of the bullet at the moment it leaves the barrel. The unit of measurement is joules (J). According to the legislation of the Russian Federation, weapons with muzzle energy up to 3 J do not require registration (they are not actually weapons). This concept is found in the Federal Law “On Weapons”. [https://www.consultant.ru/document/cons_doc_LAW_12679/]. Calculated using the kinetic energy formula:

2 Plinking, plinking

(eng. Plinking, plink) - entertaining shooting at various non-standard targets (beer cans, bottles, etc.).
Widely distributed in countries with liberal weapons laws. The word comes from the onomatopoeia plink, referring to the characteristic sound of a bullet hitting a tin can [https://severzvezda.ru/blog/mir-mody/plinking.html]. It is calculated using the kinetic energy formula: , where m is the mass of the bullet (in kg), v is the speed of the bullet (measured using a chronograph), E is the final muzzle energy.
But since many shooters prefer rifles with a power over 7.5 J and often use them for hunting, sellers often sell accessories for strengthening pneumatics separately. The buyer is responsible for registering this weapon. 3 Crowhunting

(English Crow - crow, hunting - hunting) - hunting for crows, and according to the rules of the Russian language - shooting crows, since hunting is getting food, and not everyone can eat crows [https://shkolazhizni.ru/sport/ articles/56810/].

4 Field - Target

(eng. Field target - field target) - shooting from an air rifle at distances from 8 to 50 meters at falling targets. Silhouettes of targets typical for air guns are used as targets - rabbits, squirrels, crows, rats, etc. [https://field-target.ru/Default.aspx?pid=10001&parent=10].

Precision and power

The accuracy of an air rifle implies accuracy of fire with constant external factors and aiming. Ideally, to hit the target 100% with every shot:

  • it is necessary to aim identically;
  • be in the same position;
  • use charges of the same size and weight;
  • ensure the weapon fires in the same way.

In reality, the difference between salvos is quite high. The best multi-compression rifles provide greater firing accuracy at short distances, up to 25 meters. At distances over 75 meters, difficulties arise for such models as well.

Power (muzzle energy) is measured in joules. Low-power models are designated by the letter F (0-7.5 J), medium power - FA (7.5-16.3 J), those exceeding 16.3 J are designated FAC. The latest variations are practically independent of environmental conditions and are suitable for outdoor use. It is possible to hit a target at a long distance, causing serious damage.
