Armored car LMV M65 "LYNX"

The LMV M65 Lynx armored vehicle is an all-wheel drive multifunctional armored vehicle designed to perform a wide range of missions facing the Russian Armed Forces.
In 2008, an agreement was reached between the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, OJSC KAMAZ and the IVECO company (Italy) to carry out joint work to determine the possibility of using military vehicles produced by IVECO in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

In the period from 2009 to 2011, in order to assess the compliance of the main tactical and technical characteristics of prototypes of all-wheel drive armored vehicles IVECO 65E19WM (LMV) with the requirements of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, tests were carried out on two vehicles received from Italy.

The explosion destroys the front chassis and severely damages the engine, but the armored capsule is intact. The hatch is deliberately designed to swing open during an explosion and thereby protect the crew from excess pressure. Inside the car, damage is limited to a displaced steering column (there was no contact with the driver) and chipped plastic from the front panel. An examination showed that the dummy driver, who was closest to the point of the explosion, was not injured, only his trousers were slightly torn by a flying piece of the panel and his leg was cut below the knee. Sensors record that the overload limit for the human body has not been exceeded.

Protection technology involves the creation of a separate armored capsule for the habitable compartment, which is equipped with ceramic ballistic protection attached to a metal frame, standard armored panels and bulletproof glass. The stiffening ribs are a special tubular frame.

The explosion energy is gradually extinguished by ceramic protection, a two-layer bottom, frame posts, roof, and suspension system. A significantly weakened acceleration impulse, which does not exceed medical overload standards for a person, reaches the seats of the vehicle crew members through the suspension system.

Currently, a batch of Lynx vehicles (IVECO 65E19WM (LMV)) is undergoing operational (military) tests in units of the Russian Ground Forces.

What is the output volume

By 2012, it was planned to bring more than 60 vehicles to the test site, and in 2013, manufacturers wanted to increase volumes and produce the first small batch of armored cars. But unforeseen circumstances keep everything under wraps and veil of secrecy. It is not yet known what fate awaits the armored Lynx. Some sources claim that they plan to discontinue the Lynx and put the Tiger on production line. After all, after many trials and tests, it became clear that this car is much ahead of the Lynx in some characteristics and parameters. In addition, the price for the Tiger is much lower than the cost of the Lynx all-terrain vehicle. An armored vehicle, as mentioned earlier, costs about 12 million rubles, while the price of a Tiger is approximately five million. The difference, of course, is significant and significant.

Such a high price is explained by the fact that only one step for an armored car costs the Russian budget about 30 thousand rubles, and work on the body is 26 thousand. And the price of this vehicle in the event of an unforeseen military conflict is also unknown, because spare parts are practically not produced, and repairing an armored all-terrain vehicle will cost a tidy sum.

It is difficult to judge a Russian car when six cars are being tested at a test site in America, and only one of them will go into production. In Russia there is no such thing, plus, there are many secrets and mysteries hanging over the armored car, which remain only between two manufacturers.

Armored vehicle "IVECO 65E19WM" - Russian "Lynx"

The history of the creation of this vehicle begins with agreements between the Russian Defense Ministry and the Italian IVECO on the possibilities of operating an armored army vehicle produced by IVECO in units of the Russian Armed Forces, signed in 2008. In 2009, KAMAZ purchased two Iveco LMV armored multifunctional vehicles for testing. The price of one car is almost $400,000. The main reason for purchasing these particular vehicles is operation in more than 10 countries, good explosion protection and the interest of the top military leadership of Russia in this particular machine. At that time, there were no such machines that would satisfy the requirements of the military in Russia. Although the same armored transporter BTR-90, created in the 90s and accepted for supply in 2008, the military refused to take into service, calling it also a hopeless vehicle. And a foreign vehicle, without any tenders or full tests, is almost immediately put into service by the Russian Armed Forces.

We remember the indignation caused by this fact, which was reinforced by the tests carried out, where the Italian car lost to the domestic Tiger - the Iveco LMV could not stand the test on snowy off-road terrain and quietly crawled forward when the Gorky Tiger confidently “ran” through the test section. Then the “interested” KAMAZ specialists made excuses that the bumper was too wide and there was practically no protection for the pallet. They eliminated these identified shortcomings in the following samples.

The Tiger does not have increased protection of class 6a, unlike the Iveco LMV. But at one time, the military did not put demands on Gorky’s designers to install such protection. It can also be installed fairly quickly and a well-protected Tiger can be “adopted into service.” After all, the Tiger model SMP-2, created for units of internal troops, already has class 5 protection, and the army version was left without good armor - but they serve the Motherland together and are used in military conflicts.

But let's return to "Lynx". The situation with it became more and more intriguing - by 2010, two more vehicles were bought for testing (assembled from KAMAZ). At exhibitions, “IVECO 65E19WM”, only with the Russian name “Lynx”, is shown only in closed exhibitions, where the fate of many samples is usually decided. In 2011, a dozen more vehicles were purchased and assembled at KAMAZ. However, almost immediately KAMAZ refuses to participate in the joint project. According to the information provided to the public, the Italian company had problems with the license, because the equipment and units are assembled in several countries. After this, the military department itself became the “conductor” of Iveco armored vehicles. In the fall, it appears at the exhibition under the “banners” of Oboronservis. But “Lynx” was unlucky again; the armored vehicle was unable to cope with the tests and simply avoided many obstacles.

Where is it found?

This military vehicle is widely used in 10 countries, including Italy itself. The car has good security and ease of control. These important characteristics make it suitable and reliable for combat operations. In Russia, the combat all-terrain vehicle was named Lynx, which immediately proved suitable for military and rescue operations. In addition, in 2012 Lynx took part in the military parade on Red Square for Victory Day on May 9. It can be noted that at that time the all-terrain vehicle was already considered a Russian car, although many knew that this was the merit of not only the KAMAZ company, but also the Italian automobile company. The armored body and the latest filling were to the taste of many military services in Russia, this is what made the car so popular.

Owner reviews

Artem, Kazan:

“I bought the first thing I found. I didn’t seriously choose at all, and I’m very glad that the seller recommended this particular gas mower to me. Of course, it is not comparable to large units, but for such a great price there was nothing to think about. It's about the same price now as it was a year ago. It copes with its tasks, and I only use it to keep the lawn in order. I went to the Lynx manufacturer’s website and there was absolutely no information there. I would like in the future to publish information about new products, they have good technology!”
