Already next year, the Italian company Leonardo will begin production of a light fighter based on the M-346 training aircraft. The company's management announced its plans at the IDEX 2022 exhibition, held last week in Abu Dhabi.
“A new modification is being developed to expand the combat capabilities of the aircraft. Thanks to the use of the Grifo-346 radar, the M-346 will become a full-fledged light fighter and will be able to effectively use air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons. The fighter/attack version will be ready by the end of 2022."

The M-346 will be able to carry weapons on five hardpoints, refuel in the air and effectively engage air targets with air-to-air missiles, as well as use smart bombs and guided missiles to destroy ground targets.
The Grifo-346 radar will make it possible in the future to install an active phased antenna array on the M-346, which will significantly expand the capabilities for target detection. In addition, the light fighter can be equipped with electronic warfare systems, as well as decoys for protection against enemy missiles.
The M-346 fighter modification will be relatively inexpensive and could potentially be of interest to countries that cannot afford to purchase full-fledged fighters or attack aircraft.
Combat modification capabilities of the M-346FT aircraft
M-346 is one of the newest training aircraft (designed by the Russian JSC A. S. Yakovlev Experimental Design Bureau jointly with the Italian company L'Alenia Aermacchi). Due to disagreements between the partners, the development of the model stopped at the final stage, and each of the companies received documentation of the basic version of the future aircraft (glider). After that, both companies released their own models: M-346 (L'Alenia Aermacchi) and (Yakovlev Design Bureau).
The first flight of the M-346 took place on July 15, 2004, and its serial production began in 2010. Today the machine is used to train pilots in Italy, Singapore, Israel and Poland. The length of the M-346 is 11.5 m, the wingspan is 9.7 m. The empty weight of the aircraft is 4.6 tons, the maximum take-off weight is 9.5 tons. The machine is capable of reaching speeds of up to 1060 km/h and rising to a height of up to 13.7 km. The M-346 has a crew of two.
