"Sunar" - smokeless powder with an increased burning rate

Gunpowder is an ancient invention that was first created in China. Currently popular in areas such as military affairs and hunting. Since it burns very quickly, good conditions are created for quickly pushing the projectile out of the barrel. Experienced hunters know that black powder was once a serious competitor to smokeless powder. But at the moment, the first type of substance is practically not used. The reason is simple - by adding black powder to the cartridge, after the shot the hunter will not be able to make sure that he hit the target - due to the strong accumulation of smoke in the air, he will not see anything around him. At the moment, three types of gunpowder are very popular - Sunar 35, Sunar 32 and Sunar 42. They are a smokeless pyroxylin substance that are used to charge hunting and shotgun ammunition. These substances are used to shoot from a smoothbore gun. There are three factories operating on the territory of the Russian Federation producing gunpowder for 12-gauge supplies and others. They are located in Tambov and Kazan (Kazan State Research Institute of Chemical Products, Tambov Powder Plant and Kazan State Government Powder Plant). To simplify the loading of cartridges, the substance is given a granular form.

Brands and varieties

Sunar 32 is produced in the city of Tambov. It is created on the basis of pyroxylin components. It is used to load cartridges for shotguns – hunting and smoothbore. It is most often used in 12 gauge bullets, where the mass of the projectile is exactly 36 grams. At pressures from 630 to 680 bar, it is possible to achieve bullet speeds of up to 320 meters per second. The Kazan Powder Plant and the Kazan Institute of Chemical Products specialize in the production of single-base gunpowder based on pyroxylin. Despite the fact that its shape is granular, the material is highly porous. Thus, using Sunar 42 and other grades of substances, it is possible to achieve an even higher combustion rate. This, accordingly, provokes an increase in pressure in the barrel. The bullet ends up being fired even faster. Thanks to the experience of use, comments from hunters, as well as the opinions of specialists involved in production, today more than a dozen brands of these products are successfully produced. Depending on how quickly Sunar type gunpowder burns, it is divided into three categories:

  • fast burning;
  • burning at medium speed;
  • slow burning.

Let's look at each category separately.

What components will reloading cartridges require?

What components will reloading cartridges require? Depending on the type of cartridge being manufactured, its configuration may vary - however, we will describe all possible components used by domestic reloaders.

The most important component of any single cartridge is its cartridge case. You can buy everything for reloading rifled cartridges in our store, and cartridge cases are no exception. This component serves to combine all other components of the cartridge together. The cartridges should be selected carefully, since each is designed for a specific caliber, and cartridges made on its basis can only be used by certain models of weapons.

Slow burning powder

A number of inert substances that are added to these products help slow down the burning rate. The Magnum and Sunar-410 markings allow you to distinguish slow-burning gunpowder from others. Can be used in cartridges from 16 to 410 caliber. This product can also be used with 12-gauge bullets, but subject to increasing the shot load. Based on the information above, the following pattern is created: the burning rate should decrease as the mass of the charge increases. Brands such as Sunar 35, Sunar 32 and Sunar 42 have different amounts of additives and also differ in the size of the pores in their structure. The difference may also lie in their coverage.

Characteristics

This is a single base powder.
When weighing it, it is necessary to achieve an accuracy of 0.05 grams. This gunpowder is capable of providing shot velocities equivalent to those provided by Sokol gunpowder, although its powder charge is 10% less.

The small volume of charge in the case allows the resulting free volume to be used to increase the shot shell. Sunar gunpowder is characterized by a smaller spread of projectile velocities. The muzzle pressure is 25% less than other powders. The shot is not so loud and fiery.

Sunar powder requires higher boost pressure because it has a larger pressure peak in the chamber.

There is information that hunters who independently equip cartridges with this gunpowder did not respond favorably to the sharpness of the battle.

The absence of additional letter values on the packaging indicates that this brand of gunpowder is applicable for equipping shot cartridges for hunters with 12 kb, 16 kb and 20 kb.

Gunpowder Sunar - 20, 24 has a high porosity of the grain structure. Used with 12 gauge training and bench cartridges.

Characteristics of Sunar gunpowder - 35, 32. Serves as a propellant charge in shot cartridges having 12 k-br, 16 k-br and 20 k-br, the casings of which are made of plastic, paper, and metal. The shotguns are smooth-bore, have a standard shot load and components recommended by modern GOST standards.

Due to the small weight of the powder charge, the hunter, when loading cartridges, must be as accurate, careful and attentive as possible.

These types of gunpowder are characterized by a sharp increase in pressure indicators at high temperatures (from 40 degrees and above).

Gunpowder Sunar N has ballistic characteristics equivalent to Sunar - 32 and - 35, but differs in that it has a higher filling density. It can be used in cartridges with rolling, using the “star” method, using long wads.

Digital designation

Please note that Sunar gunpowder may have numerical designations. For example, sunar 35, sunar 32, sunar 42 and so on. They differ based on the material used in the production of the cartridge case, as well as the gun. Products marked 20 and 24 directly indicate that they are used only for bench training shooting. Markings Sunar 35 and Sunar 32 indicate use in calibers from 12 to 20 millimeters with folder, metal sleeves, and even plastic varieties. This type of product resembles Sunar N, but the peculiarity is the increased backfill density. It is recommended to use sunar 42, 50 and 46 in plastic sleeves where the container is made of polyethylene. The difference between the presented brands and others lies in the amount of pressure created, the efficiency of combustion, as well as the shape of each grain. With the help of Sunar Magnum type, cartridges are loaded, which, according to the domestic classification, belong to the semi-magnum type. They usually have a charge weight of up to 40 g and a sleeve length of 70 millimeters. The slowest burning is Sunar 410. Its composition is very close to rifle-type products, although in practice it is not used here. Hunters who have to load cartridges with their own hands are simply obliged to carry out this procedure carefully and accurately. Please note that when weighing any type of gunpowder, even sunar 35, the deviation from the norm should not exceed 0.05 g. If the ammunition is loaded inaccurately, the hunter risks worsening the range of the shot and its sharpness. Powder charge density is another criterion that must be treated with extreme caution.

Interesting fact: due to its unique qualities, Sunar makes it possible to improve shooting performance, since at the same pressure it takes up less space. Accordingly, hunters using sunar 32 and similar types often practice increasing the amount of shot in the cartridges.

Using even one like the Sunar 42, the shot creates less noise and is smoother. When shooting at different times of the year, you need to learn how to correctly adjust the powder weight. In winter, as well as with increased humidity levels, the pressure created by combustible gunpowder drops. Remember: since release batches may vary, ammunition must be loaded in accordance with the recommendations indicated on the box. Regardless of whether Sunar 35 or another type of gunpowder is used (for example, Sunar 32), following the rules will make the procedure as safe as possible.

Gunpowder Sunar 42 Magnum

The gunpowder used was “Sunar-42” from the Kazan plant, batch 14/01K, good until 10.2009. Not too new, but not old either. The factory recommendation for equipment is 2.40g of gunpowder per 42g of shot. Further everywhere it is these samples (2.40g) and N3 42g shot in a container, KV-209 capsule. Shooting was carried out from IZH27MM, barrel cylinder - 660mm. Speed measurements - ProChrono, pressure - strain gauge.

Results:

  1. Sleeve 70mm, twist – Vo= 349 m/s (P= 62 MPa), 365 m/s (P= 63 MPa)
  2. Sleeve 70mm, “hut” – Vo= 372 m/s (P= 75 MPa), 390 m/s (P= 75 MPa)
  3. Sleeve 70mm, “star” – Vo= 415 m/s (P= 100 MPa), 425 m/s (P= 100 MPa)
  4. Sleeve 76mm, twist – Vo= 350 m/s (P= 57 MPa), 354 m/s (P= 63 MPa)
  5. Case 76mm, twist – Vo= 340 m/s (P= 56 MPa), 358 m/s (P= 61 MPa) plug between the PE container and the powder wad.
  6. Sleeve 76mm, “star” – Vo= 340 m/s (P= 68 MPa), 362 m/s (P= 68 MPa)

Sunar-Magnum gunpowder is also used to equip Magnum-class cartridges with a shot load of 46 g. In this case, the gunpowder weight increases to 2.4 g. Accordingly, when fired, the pressure increases to 900-950 Bar. Such cartridges, of course, can be used in weapons with a 76 mm chamber (“Magnum”).

As shooting practice shows, Sunar-Magnum gunpowder is sensitive to the method of rolling the case. When rolling the sleeve using the “Star” method, the pressure increases, while the shot speed increases slightly. Thus, in the “Nitrogen-Magnum” cartridge, with a weight of Sunar-Magnum gunpowder of 2.4 g, a shot weight of 46 g and the sealing of the cartridge case using the “Zvezda” method, the pressure reaches 900-930 Bar, which corresponds to the norm for ammunition of this class. The pressure was measured using piezoelectric sensors on a special installation by specialists from NPF Azot.

When testing the Record-Leader cartridge, in which the amount of Sunar-Magnum gunpowder was 2.7 g, and the shot weight was 55 g, the 89 mm long case was rolled in the usual way, the pressure did not exceed 756 kg/cm2. The pressure was measured on the ballistic barrel using the crusher method. Of course, it is necessary to take into account both the type of wad containers used in the cartridges and the type of primer.

Correct load for different calibers

Considering that the loading of cartridges is carried out differently, based on the type of cartridges, gunpowder, gun and the purpose pursued by the owner (practice shooting or hunting), you need to know the correct load. Depending on which caliber is used in practice, it varies.

Attachment for 12 gauge

If you have 12 gauge bullets, follow these instructions. The weight for 12 gauge when using Sunar 32 is as follows: 1.9 g (the mass of the charge when using Sunar 32 gunpowder should be no more than 32 g). The weight for 12 gauge gunpowder Sunar 35 is 2.1 g, if the charge mass is 35 g. In practical use of gunpowder Sunar 42 / 1, 2, 3, the weight of the sample is 2.3, 2.45 and 2.35 g, respectively (weight varies within 40-42 g).

Attachment for 16 gauge

If you have to use a 16 gauge, the recommendations are as follows. The weight for 16 gauge when using sunar 35 gunpowder is as follows: 1.7 g (charge weight - from 29 to 30 g). The weight for 16 gauge gunpowder Sunar 42 /1 is 1.2 g, if the mass of the charge varies at the level of 31-33 g. In practical use of Sunar 42 /2, 3, the weight of the sample is 2.1 and 2.1 g, respectively (the weight varies at within 30-32 g).

Attachment for 20 gauge

Are you using 20 gauge bullets? Follow these instructions. The weight for 20 gauge when using sunar 35 gunpowder is as follows: 1.5 g (charge weight - 24-35 g). The weight for 20 caliber gunpowder sunar 42/1, 2, 3 is 1.8, 1.9 and 1.8 g, respectively, if the charge mass is from 25 to 28 g.

Cartridge equipment

Many hunters complain about the unsatisfactory performance of homemade Sunar-based cartridges. The reason for this is that Sunar 42 or Sunar 410 is more demanding on obturation (ensuring tightness in the barrel bore). Therefore, it is recommended to use larger die-cut wads. The cartridges, as mentioned above, are better to use plastic or paper, with a Zhevelo capsule (a cap with a substance flammable on impact), they will ignite the gunpowder better than others. One and a half millimeter gaskets should fit into the cartridge very tightly (“with a squeak”), with their convexity towards the charge. Plastic seals can also be used. However, it should be remembered that factory seals may be smaller than the bore and fall inside. In this case, you will have to make the seals yourself. To do this, you will have to make your own matrix and punch. This “finishing with a file” is mainly relevant for domestic guns; owners of “foreign” guns should not worry about this.

The cartridge itself is loaded like this:

A homemade or factory seal is sent to the gunpowder; cardboard gaskets must be installed on top of it. Then - two felt wads with tension. The first one is oiled, the second one is not (for shock absorption). Once the wads are installed, insert the container. With such equipment, the characteristics will increase significantly.

Remember that if you store a significant amount of gunpowder without a gun, you can get a real sentence under Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. If you are left without a 12 or 20 caliber gun, and Sunar-35 gunpowder, for example, remains, you can get under the article.

Useful tips

To improve shot performance, before hunting in winter and in wet weather, it is recommended to increase the amount of gunpowder by one tenth of a gram. If, for example, you use 12-gauge bullets, this will improve the sharpness of the charge leaving the barrel. In addition, its initial speed will also increase. Experts do not recommend exceeding the maximum permissible value, especially if sunar 35 is used. The reason is simple - such experiments will lead to the fact that instead of increasing the starting speed, it will decrease. It is noteworthy that with a large amount of shot charge, cartridges should be loaded only with the use of slow-burning gunpowder. Such a solution will normalize the reaction during a shot. When using 12 gauge ammunition, the shooter will be able to aim more accurately at the target. All the information listed above will certainly be useful to those who like to load cartridges themselves. Let us remind you once again about the high accuracy of weighing the material. You can achieve good results if you have not measurements, but electronic high-precision scales. And for those who, in most cases, purchase ready-made 12-gauge bullets, and who do not want to spend extra time loading cartridges, the information provided will help them navigate the marks indicated on the packaging.

We will describe everything for reloading rifled cartridges

We will also describe everything for reloading rifled cartridges. You can buy everything listed using the services of our store - and this is really convenient, since you can find everything you need in one place.

The reloading equipment that you need to buy to work on loading cartridges yourself is quite diverse. You will definitely need products that allow you to remove used damaged primers from cartridge cases and equip new ones, ready for use - decapsulators and primers of various types and modifications. There are both universal products that allow you to work with capsules of any type, as well as specialized ones.

Reloading rifled cartridges will become much more economical if you purchase a full-size kit. With its help, you can trim elongated cartridges and return them to their original factory size, which will allow you to reuse spent cartridges.

Also, reloading cartridges will require special products that make it possible to measure the required amount of gunpowder to be loaded under a certain caliber and place it inside the cartridge case through the muzzle. High-quality work with a sample of gunpowder will ensure sufficient power of the manufactured ammunition and will allow you to avoid moments with an excess powder charge, which harms any weapon.

Describing everything for reloading rifled cartridges (you can buy this from us), one cannot fail to mention all kinds of presses equipped with special attachments and dies. These products can perform a fairly large number of functions - and sometimes for work you will not need anything at all except such a unit with the necessary set of attachments for a certain caliber. Of course, such machines are somewhat more expensive than less technologically advanced reloading equipment. You can also buy them using our services.

conclusions

Sunar is a gunpowder that fully corresponds to foreign products in all technical parameters. It is slightly better than a number of varieties of gunpowder of domestic origin. Shots using this product allows you to get a sharper and clearer shot. The barrel of the gun after hunting will not suffer from heavy accumulation of dirt.

I completely agree. Let me add, they are even capricious when pressed!!

On chedite N-17 maximum 1mm. I have Irbis Hunting batch 1/16 (1.8/35) (Very fast) It even reacts to 0.5 mm of pressure on the leg. You need to understand which shock absorber and which PC to use. The same GP N-17, it has a softer shock absorber, there is a different picture of the scree. You need to select the degree of “pressure” to the different components of the fast batches. I came to the conclusion that with my components the minimum height of the finished cartridge is 57 mm. (Moreover, the leg is pressed in at 0.5-1 mm. maximum)

IMHO, when loading with any gunpowder and shot shells rated for it, the charge should be lightly shaken after filling into the cartridge case, and wads and PCs should be selected at such a height as to prevent excessive compression when closing the cartridge, due to which the combustion chamber is reduced with all the negative consequences. It should also be taken into account that when using projectile masses below the optimum wad, on the contrary, it is better to tighten it beyond measure in order to obtain better combustion and more complete efficiency.

In the 80s, my father used Sokol gunpowder for the Tula gun. Some say that this gunpowder was the most common at that time and bad. I don’t know, but they killed some game, and quite a lot. And then he bought an SKS (carbine) of a military version and almost didn’t need gunpowder. So, sometimes go duck hunting.

For 28 caliber, Sunar 42 is still better. Well, what a gun. For TOZ-34 it is possible to use a magnum type, which is not possible for others. I aphid toz-34-28 Sunar 35 1.1g and fraction 24-26g. It’s wonderfully snappy and doesn’t crumble too much. It’s a cylinder made from a milk carton (the stems are clean).
